Wasting food: daughter wants a spud gun.

I used to play with these as a kid and I was telling my daughter about a spud gun.

I had one like this.

spudgun300x300(2).jpg

Now my daughter wants one. I'm not too sure. I think that the idea of actively wasting food might not be the best.

Thoughts?

At least it's not a pizza gun.

We made orange cannons as kids and would shoot them at eat other in the orange groves. Those things hurt.

What were were talking about again? Oh, wasting food. Right!

Should I mention cow chip wars?

    all depends
    How old is she?
    what is she shooting?

Kindergartens waste food all the time with rice bins and playdough. Both are so worth it.
Maybe have her plant a potato hill or two-grow her own ammunition.

and what did you think using one as a kid? did you have fun with it?

I'd prefer one of those guns that shoots mini-marshmallows.

    She's 11.
She was shooting other kids. Not so great.
Plus I grew up in house were we didn't waste food.

"Spud gun" where I'm from involves several pieces of PVC piping and shooting an entire potato out of the tube... The ENTIRE potato. More like wasted potato skins, if you ask me...

This looks mostly harmless and like it uses pieces of a single potato. Besides, maybe you can show her how to grow a new potato out of the pieces that she doesn't use?

^ This is what I was thinking of when I first read this, and it's basically the same thing as an orange cannon, only I imagine potatoes would hurt even more.

I like your idea of using the leftovers for sprouting.

You grew up in a house that didn't waste food yet you had a spud gun. I'm confused.

My parents didn't know I had it.
They were against guns too. Plastic or otherwise.

    I didn't.
    It was a hidden activity.
I even had to hide the used potatoes.

My cousin made a full out potato launcher once... much cooler than the gun.
I personally wouldn't waste my money on one, though. Seems like one of those toys she'll like for a few weeks, then toss to the side.

Get your daughter a spud gun, better yet build one with her. You don't sit on the couch and shoot each other so, she will be active, and you can use it to watermelon rinds if your worried about the potato. Also is it really waste if its used?

Is this a serious question? Kids are kids, let them be kids, have fun etc
Maybe talk to her about not aiming it straight at kids or whatever but it's some fun. What next banning kids from climbing trees cos it's not good for the tree and they might hurt themselves? You can find a negative and positive in a lot of things. Personally I think you are over thinking it. :flowerforyou:

Edit: PS: Fear is a terrible decision maker.
  • why don't you have her plant a potato patch, so she can grow her own potatos? then she's not wasting money, and they're potatos that your family probably wouldnt have eaten anyway so it's not reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally like you're taking food out of the mouths of anyone?

maybe watch out though, her siblings are going to be fair game.

Money doesn't grow on trees!!! But potatoes do (plants, anyway) :) It's a potato. She isn't wasting it, she's repurposing it. Plant some, and you will have more than you know what to do with anyway.

    It's a spud gun ....
Buy the girl a spud and watch her have an hour or two of fun.
Let's not over think things. It's a freakin potato! If you feel that horrid about it send $10 to some charitable organisation to even out your karma.
