clothes!
Last night I was invited to a small dinner party so I needed to get a little dressed up. I don't have any dress pants that fit anymore! They all just hang off of me, and one pair even threatened to fall off me even when fastened. I was much more comfortable in chinos anyway, and dressed them up with a nicer pair of shoes…

i did it!
Yesterday I did a 23-minute mile on the treadmill !!! Now, you may not think this is a big deal - but I had both knees replaced last winter. Before that, I struggled to do my whole grocery shopping in one trip and spent most evenings with either ice or heat on my knees. Since the surgeries, I've lost about 45 pounds and…

what does it mean to "lift heavy"?
I'm just /thinking and curious... How do you define "heavy lifting"? I've recently changed the way that I lift. I had been doing 3 sets of 12 at a weight that had me working at it by the end, but certainly able to complete the reps fairly easily. For lower body, that was also during the time when I'd switched from rehab…

Walnut-Crusted Apple Pie
http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/walnut-crusted-apple-pie-50400000124472/ We tried this over the holidays and the walnut crust was delicious. It's made with crushed walnuts and a few tablespoons of vodka to bind it together. It baked up a little darker than most crust, but the article in Cooking Light magazine said that it…

great Dr visit
I see my Doc every 3 months to keep a check on blood pressure and blood sugar. So I had an appointment this morning and I've lost 12 pounds since last August - right where I should be with my goal to lose 1 pound a week. I was really pleased with this since I was on vacation for over 3 weeks during these last 3 months, and…

how close fo you get to your calorie goal?
I always figure that my calorie goal is a goal to shoot for, not a hard and fast ceiling never to be overshot. I figure I'm doing well if I'm within 200 cals, either over or under. But I see some people beating up on themselves for going 25 cals over their goal. How do you view your calorie goal?

eggs vs. egg beaters
For the bakers/experimentors out there.... I don't bake often. I live by myself and to bake a whole recipe of seomthing means I have that whole thing in my house and it's just waaay to tempting. So I'm always looking for ways to cut the recipe in half or more, or to make things more low-cal. Does using egg beaters change…

finally!
I'm not done yet by any means, but I finally made it over the 100 lbs mark! AND, I'm within about 1/2 lbs of making it to a smaller goal that I wanted to reach before going on vacation. I leave Tuesday so that gives me 3 days to lose that extra 1/2 lbs. VERY do-able!

exercises for people with bad knees
http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/no-excuses-knee-injury#cmpid=raoz1108 Ok - just ignore that he's the personal trainer for Dr. Oz. There are some really good ideas in the video for some no-impact exercise. I'm thinking they are exercises that you can do while traveling too since you don't need a gym. I'm going to give some…

spaghetti squash
It just sounds intriguing. I was eating lunch with someone the other day and he was having leftover spaghetti squash just like it was real spaghetti, complete with meatballs and sauce. How the heck to you open it and get out what you need to get out? And then - any suggestions or recipes?

new jacket!
It's Fall here in cental NY. Ok... it's almost Winter but I'm in denial! Anyway, it's time to put away the windbreaker and get out something heavier. My NSV today: I'm finally able to weat the jacket I bought 3 yrs ago. It's a size 2X. At my highest weight I was wearing a 4X, but a 5X really fit better.

pasta salad calories?
I eat at a cafe on our campus just about every day for lunch. The cooks there are mostly Italian, and they make really good pasta salad. I would think they'd be a fairly healthy choice since they're mostly vinigarette or italian dressing as opposed to mayo, but how the heck would I estimate calories in a cup of the pasta…

just put the shoes on!
I've been pretty consistent in my exercising, and I've been doing some sort of 'intentional' exercising just about every day. Sure there are days when I don't feel like it - I'm tired, I had a long day, I don't feel like doing 'that', etc, etc, etc. But I've found that if I "just put the shoes on" and start SOMEthing,…

favorite apple?
It's Fall here in upstate NY and that means APPLES!! My favorites are Jazz (cross between Royal Gala and Braeburn) and Honey Crisp. Are there major differences in calorie counts among apples? - a quick search in the database and it looks like they're all pretty much the same (i looked at honey crisp, gala, fuji, breaburn…

free weights vs. machines
I'm just curious. I've seen most people here on MFP say they prefer and/or recommend free weights over machines. Why is that? Convenience? Availability? Is it better/worse for using correct form?

vacation
I just spent 5 days at a conference in Las Vegas, and then another 5 days on vacation in a national park. I figured I'd be happy if I didn't put on any more than 5 lbs. But when I got home and weighed myself, I hadn't gained anything at all! I was so pleased! And it also gives me some confidence that when I do reach my…

new clothes needed!
Specifically - BRAS! I'm on vacation in Joshua Tree National Park in California. I had reserved a compact car, but they gave me a 4WD Jeep - very cool. So I decided to take a road that is only for 4WD vehicles and it was really cool. But I discovered something - I need new bras!

family NSV
I just had all 3 of my sisters visiting for the weekend. Two of them complimented me on my weight and how good I'm looking now, they both joined me in playing Wii (lots of fun and laughing!), and even complimented me on my healthy and good cooking. The other sister never said a word and I realized - it's because I'm not…

1/2 way there!
My highest weight was 395. :blushing: I started keeping track of my weight and trying to lose on Sept 1, 2008 - my weight was 377. Today, I'm officially halfway to my goal weight and I've lost 100 lbs!!!!!

new clothes NSV
- I went shopping last week and bought myself a new winter coat. 4 years ago I was into a 5X and some of those were too small for me. This coat is a very roomy 2X!!! And it's purple! A step definitely outside my usual comfort zone! - I swim 3x a week and a swim suit will last me about 6 months before the chlorine gets to…

a couple of NSV's lately
I did some clothes shopping over this past weekend and it hit me - I've gone from a 5X (and pushing not being able to fit into those!) down to a solid 2X. And these are minor , but still big, too - you know? Today for the first time I noticed my ring sliding around on my finger - to the point where I don't think I'll be…

non-scale progress
I was replying to another post and I think it's finally starting to sink in how much progress I HAVE made, even though I still have a long way to go: Size 5x down to 2X, Size 28-30 down to 22-24. No more seat belt extenders. No more worrying about even fitting into the airplane seat. No more worrying about fitting into…

calorie values from a restaurant?
I just ate lunch at a very nice river-side local restaurant. It's a really nice day here in upstate NY and it was really lovely sitting beside the river chatting with a friend. How do you figure out how many calories are in a restaurant dish when there are none listed on their menue, and nothing close in the MFP data base?…

great online support group
Years ago I found a great online support group for survivors of sexual abuse called The Survivors Forums. I was a member for several years, and then I was a moderator for 3 years to "pay it forward". I'm not as active as I once was but I'm still a member. http://www.thesurvivorsforums.com/ It's an excellent resource and I…

little things add up
I've been thinking about all the ways that I've changed - all the little things I've done that increase my activity level but don't really add up to "working out" or "exercise." - parking farther away from the door at the mall, grocery store, movie theater, etc - taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator -…

headed off diabetes med
I just saw my GP Doc today and my A1c is down to 4.3!!! The highest I ever was was 5.1 so I was still considered borderline diabetic. Over the last 4 years or so I've lost about 115 lbs, 35 lbs in the last 6 months and my blood sugars have been heading down. My blood sugars seem to respond to weight (as opposed to…
