That Crazy English Language
Someone sent me list of the crazy things in the English language and there were several related to food, diet, eating, etc. They gave me chuckle this morning... - can vegetarians eat animal crackers? - what was the best before sliced bread? - if you eat both pasta and antipasta, would you still be hungry? - one tequila,…

new cottage cheese ideas?
I like cottage cheese - it's relatively low in calories and it's high in protein, and I do like the taste. But I'm getting bored with the taste of just plain cottage cheese. I mix it with fruit a lot and that's good. Any other ideas out there? One thing I did discover lately is mixing in a tablespoon of apple butter or…

Starting Again
Last Fall I fell. I never made a transition from walking outside to exercising inside once the weather turned cold, then there was a death in the family, then all the family gatherings for the holidays, then a fairly severe PTSD episode - and I quit paying attention because I quit caring. And I gained about 40 pounds. And…

excellent blog about how we talk to ourselves
http://blog.myfitnesspal.com/2013/10/31/win-or-learn/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=MyFitnessPal&utm_content=Win%20or%20Learn&utm_campaign=coschedule I know it's an important thing for me. Am I being my best supporter? Or am I just a nag? Would I keep a friend around when all they do is berate me every time I don't make…

NSV photos
Holy smokes! I was visiting some family over the weekend and she sent me a photo that I compared to 2 1/2 yrs ago. This one is from summer 2011.... and this one is from this past weekend. I still have a long ways to go, but seeing pics sure puts it into perspective - and helps keep my motivation going!

claiming some bragging rights
I just hit a milestone so I'll brag a bit - I've lost a grand total of 125 pounds now, and I realized that's about 31% of my body weight. And I just went down another size a few days ago so I've gone from a tight size 28 to a nice fitting size 20 in pants, and in tops from a 5X to a sloppy 2X but not-quite-ready-for-1X. I…

on getting enough sleep....
I know...I know. There will be lots of people who argue that they're doing fine and losing weight on __ hrs of sleep and the only thing that matters is calories in/calories out. From what I've seen here, the people who say that seem to be people who don't have a lot of weight to lose. For those of us who do have a lot to…

Bigorexia
No - I'm not kidding. Bigorexia, or Muscle Dysmorphia, is the male obsession with building muscles and bulking up. It can include psychological abnormalities, including irritability and angry outbursts ('roid rage), and can put men at higher risk of injury. “Individuals who have bigorexia, a lot of them tend to use…

Benefit Ride
I just finished a benefit ride called Akin's Angels and it was a blast. I rode about 150 miles by the time I got home, wore my new jacket, felt really solid on my bike. I still have along way to go, but I think for the first ti me in my life I wasn't self conscious about my weight.

a little decision is a big NSV
I was out and about yesterday and just had to brag about my day: - I got some breakfast and then got myself moving and went for a walk on a local bike & hike trail - I ended up doing 5 miles which is longest I've done in year. Probably decades! I'm a little stiff and sore, but nothing major. - I went out to the movies: No…

Sleep Deprivation Linked to Junk Food Cravings
"high-calorie foods also became significantly more desirable when participants were sleep-deprived. This combination of altered brain activity and decision-making may help explain why people who sleep less also tend to be overweight or obese." Interesting. Don't get all crazy on me - I know there are LOTS of exceptions.…

steak marinade
I need a good simple marinade for grilling steak. Anybody got a good recipe? Tonight's steak was marinated just in Worcestershire Sauce - it was nice and tender, but the taste was just ok. I tried a Chicago Rub but it just tasted like pepper to me. I love Golden Corral's steak - anyone know what they use?

New grill - need recipes!
I've been really enjoying grilled vegetables - sweet peppers and onions on a skewer, lightly sprayed with butter flavored canola oil and sprinkled with Morton's seasoned salt. Also chicken tenders sprinkled with a little lemon pepper. What's your favorite thing on the grill?

slowly but surely
Slowly but surely I'm getting back into my routine and coming out of a month-long depression/ptsd episode caused by some internal pelvic medical tests (thankfully, everything is fine). A month of comfort-eating and I gained 10 pounds. I'm hoping some of it is water. Going to the gym or swimming feels too intimidating right…

running >30 miles/week bad for your heart?
http://now.msn.com/too-much-distance-running-might-be-bad-for-your-heart-study-says Source: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323975004578501150442565788.html I'm not a runner so it's not an important thing for me, but in terms of cardio workouts I think it does make a good case for the need for rest days. PS -…

caught in the rain!
I rode out to Boston, MA for a short weekend. The weather was supposed to be great and it's a 3-hr ride each way for me so I was really looking forward to it. The Saturday ride started out a little chilly, but it warmed up fairly quickly and it was great. Sunday though.... I left my niece's house right at 2pm, and it…

Exercises specifically for biking?
I've started exercising my hands to get ready for riding season - I dislocated my left thumb 2 years ago and it seems like I always struggle at the beginning of the season. So I started using a squeeze ball to strengthen my hands. Last summer I was still sort of recuperating from bi-lateral knee replacement in Jan/Feb, and…

idently crisis NSV
There have been a lot of changes in my life recently, with my weight loss being one of the big ones. So much so that I've been having this quasi-identity crisis lately. - My fingers and toes look longer. Last summer's shoes that were my go-to favorites no longer fit. I lost a ring that I'd had for 10 years or so because it…

high intensity/long duration vs. more moderate workout
In another area a member posted that she was moving away from high-moderate intensity workouts for long durations to low intensity workouts for moderate amounts of time, and that she's feeling better and more fit with the change. I'm just curious if anyone else has done this and what difference are you seeing? Is there…

Jurassic Popcorn
What's the deal? Today I went to see Jurassic Park (in IMAX 3D - great fun!) and splurged on a large popcorn. Every other place I've seen puts a large buttered popcorn at Regal Theaters at 1640 cals, but their sign at the concession stand said a large popcorn is 960 cals. They didn't list any cals for the 'butter flavored…

First ride of the season!
I took my first ride of the season today - it was sunny and 50 degrees here in upstate NY (Capital Region). The bike handled and ran well and I had a blast. I felt stronger than ever - last year I was still recuperating from having both knees replaced, and in looking back I was just very tentative and didn't have a whole…

cool NSV
I work at a small college in upstate NY as Director of Media Services - we do tech support for the electronic classrooms, event support, sound system, data projection, pretty much anything that plugs in or has batteries. Today was the first day of video recording a class being taught by a senior professor who has lots of…

adding stuff to popcorn
What can I do to make powdered stuff stick to popcorn? This evening I tried using sugar-free butterscotch pudding mix on my popcorn. I could taste it, but not much, and most of it ended up at the bottom of the bowl. Any suggestions? Anyone tried spray olive oil? or the spray on butter? What else do you like on your popcorn?
