10k races - why so few?
I've run quite a few 5ks and my next goal is a 10k. I find they are few are far between! And the ones I do find are generally just a 5k x 2 - doing the course twice. Just curious as to why that distance doesn't seem to be as popular. Any thoughts?

Barbell row form question
I've watched videos/read directions on how to do rows, and the most common advice I've seen is to imagine squeezing an orange between your shoulder blades. I don't have trouble at lower weights, but I'm up to 65lbs and I'm noticing that my forearms are doing most of the work. I don't think that is correct. The elbows are…

Gym rant - never heard of SL!!
I generally like my gym...it's just the basics, $10/month and on my way to work. It's very clean and the weight room has everything I need. That being said, the trainers there are not so great. Today I asked if I could get one session with a trainer and just have someone watch my form on lifts. I mentioned SL and she had…

SL 2 days/week
I'm sure there are threads about this but I've searched the forums unsuccessfully, so I'll ask here. Do any of you do a 2x/week routine? I'm not talking about skipping a day here and there...I mean planning 2x/week. I'm finding that 3x/week feels like a lot and I am trying to get 3 runs per week in too, as I'm doing 5k…

Connection between weighing, tracking and bingeing
I have noticed that for me, there seems to be a correlation between weighing and bingeing. Here's my mindset: Gain = well heck, I might as well eat, I gained anyway Loss = Woohoo, let's celebrate! Not weighing daily causes me lots of anxiety. I find myself wondering constantly if I'm up or down. I guess that's par for the…

Ladies...the perfect gym bag?
Does it exist? I am using an old Vera Bradley baby bag (LOL!) for my gym bag right now. It has pockets inside but is on the small side and just doesn't look very "gym-ish". What kind of bag do you use? Link me up! I'd love one with inside pockets for shampoo/soap/brush/etc and plenty of room for a change of clothes, towel,…

Week 1 Discussion Thread - Let's Get Going!
Here's a place where we can share helpful tips or vent or whatever we need to keep each other on track. I'll start. Although I usually walk or run alone, going with a friend makes all the difference. I have 3 ladies I go with on a regular basis and I think we really push each other to go farther/faster/better. If there's…

Hello TLCPL staffers! Glad you made the commitment to stay active this holiday season. We are going to keep this simple (hopefully). Goblet squats vs. bar
I started SL back in May and stopped when I pretty much wrecked my thigh muscles trying to do squats with a 15 lb. bar on my shoulders. Couldn't walk for about 3 days. Now I am back and started out just doing squats with no weight. I discovered goblet squats on You Tube, pretty much by accident, and I liked that form since…

Easy Low Sodium Salsa
I LOVE salsa...but commercial salsa has too much sodium for me! So I made my own. 1/2 cup Hunt's diced tomatoes, no salt added 1/2 medium sized vidalia onion (approximately) 1/2 yellow bell pepper 1 Tbsp granulated sugar 1/2 tsp Mrs. Dash Extra Spicy seasoning Blend all together in a food processor. This makes about 3…

Run Walk Run Method/training vs. racing
I am on week 8 of C25K and have worked my way up to running non-stop for 25 minutes at 12:30 min/mile (started out at 15:30 min/mile!!) I must admit my last run was pretty difficult, and I wanted to stop many times during. I've been reading about this interval method and it makes a lot of sense. My question is this: is the…

Homemade McGriddles
Not really a recipe...just an idea for making one of my FAVORITE McDonald's treats. The sandwich is much larger than the McDondald's version, so I feel like I'm eating more! 2 pancakes made with Bisquick Heart Smart baking mix (batch makes 14 pancakes) 1 fried egg, prepared with 1/2 tsp olive oil 1 slice Kraft 2% milk…

"Weird" food combos that work for you
I love to discover new, strange combos that I wouldn't have thought of before. What's yours? My newest one is baked, mashed sweet potato mixed with creamy natural peanut butter. It's very filling and feels like I am stretching my peanut butter really far. May sound gross...but it works for me! :)

NSV: How can it get any better??
So I'm down 27 pounds...but that's not what is keeping me going. It's all the little stuff! --I've dropped from 47% body fat to 44% --My wedding rings are loose and almost falling off --I can wear a size "large" running pants (no more XXL) --Riding my bike feels...dare I say it?...easy! --I can run 20 minutes without…

AACK! I can hardly lift the bar!
I have been strength training for a couple of months now, just doing the typical not-too-heavy-higher-reps kind of routine. I've been reading about the Stronglift 5x5 program and decided to give it a try. So today was day 1 for beginners, workout A, which includes bench press. I managed to do 5 reps with just the bar but…

Breathing and running
Just had to share a small success I've had with running. I'm on week 4 of C25K and while it's not exactly getting easier...it's getting better. A couple weeks ago I read about how breathing can really affect your runs, so I've made an effort to concentrate on that above anything else. My method is to do a 4-step…

Favorite tricks and habits for healthy eating
I'm am pretty new here and loving it so far. I'd love to hear about the little tricks or methods you use to make things easier. Here are mine so far: Log calories before I eat them (have seen lots of people saying that helps them) Dice bell peppers and freeze them. Then pull out a small portion and add to omelettes,…
