Total Immersion Swimming
Anyone tried this? I've got a 5k open sea swim in the summer - swimming from the Isle of Wight in the UK, to the mainland. I haven't swum properly for years other than splashing around in the pool with my son. I've had 3 training swims. The first one was ok - I did 1.5km (60 lengths) and discovered my front crawl is fast…

Weighing daily - secrets I've discovered
I've been logging my weight daily for some time and plotting it on an excel chart. I know that my weight fluctuates so I decided to log daily so I could see patterns that emerge - it would help me do the right thing day after day. I added my calories to help with pattern recognition after a few weeks Then I added exercise…

Hugh Jackman is a decent chap
Hugh Jackman is becoming one of my favourite people (but maybe I should spend less time reading tabloids). - He looks like a healthy, fit chap (good role model for blokes) - I saw a picture of him today on his bike and wearing a helmet (good role model for kids) - a few days ago he was out on a micro scooter with his wife…

Cycle commuters - what's your commute like?
Anyone cycle to work today and want to share? It was a cold clear morning for me, but it's been raining since I arrived at work luckily I have neoprene shoe covers - my feet are really the only thing I don't like getting wet.. My ride starts with about 1/2 mile uphill, then a mile or so gentle up and down along a fairly…

motivational feeds - facebook/twitter
I used to get motivational pictures with phrases like "always take the stairs", "don't quit", "just run" etc. from a friend of mine who runs a gym - he used to post them to facebook and as we were friends they'd appear as a feed on my phone. He doesn't do it since his gym got burned down - which is understandable. So can…

Doing this in secret?
Anyone else losing weight / getting fit in secret? I'm not exactly keeping it a secret I'm just not announcing it anywhere other than here, but I got a reminder of why I'm doing it this way at home this weekend. My wife and I ended up in a discussion about food, nothing serious, but she is critical of the fact that…

Eating breakfast not all it's cracked up to be
It seems that eating a healthy breakfast may not actually make much difference: http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/health/healthy-breakfast-eaters-life-still-****-2013110680919 (oh, you need to replace the **** with "*kitten*" without the spaces)

When do I even lift?
When do I consider myself someone who lifts? I have a routine based on SL 5x5 that has progression and I know how to do the moves I've been doing it for a couple of months. I don't feel self concious any more going going through the moves when people on the cardio machines are watching. so I sort of feel like a lifter but…

Fructose - better than sucrose or glucose? Yes says the EFSA
I just read this article on the guardian website which I found pretty interesting http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/oct/21/fructose-poison-sugar-industry-pseudoscience The summary is that the European Food Safety Authority has decided that fructose offers health benefits over sucrose or glucose - the writer of…

fitness class with 7 year old son
I'm trying to work out what sort of class I can take with my 7 year old son, so we can learn something together. I think we'd both get a lot out of it. He'd see me learning and trying hard, I'd have to always be a good role model (it would keep me honest). We go swimming together for fun, and he plays tennis each week, I…

Dumbell 5x5 supersets?
Apologies for any incorrect terminology. I've been working on a variation of the stronglifts 5x5 programme using dumbells which seems to be working ok for me so far - I have increased 1RM by 10 - 30% in 4 weeks. I'm about to start another 4 weeks and have made a couple of minor changes to mix things up a bit and accomodate…

motivational short films / programmes
My treadmill at work faces the wall with just a health and safety poster to read, so today I took my android tablet and watched a bit of "Le Diner des Cons" - a French comedy (I know it doesn't sound right, but I find some of their comedies funny). Anyway, I'm looking for your recommendations for motivational films or…

article: apps for dieters don't work as they lack support
and then loads of comments saying - rubbish. I warn you it's from the Daily Mail in the UK so is short on actual news http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2449318/Phone-apps-dieters-dont-work-Downloads-lack-motivational-support-tips-changing-behaviour.html However, they've included a picture of a lady deciding between…

I think Karma is broken - look out people

Today I ran and rowed so went in for another one - strawberry - seriously, I think Karma is broken. Be on your guard. Share your broken Karma stories here.

Fitbit sleep tracker - useful?
Hello all, I'm thinking of getting a fitbit tracker for my wife. She's not trying to lose weight, isn't actively monitoring her calories in/out and isn't on any particular health drive. She does meet a personal trainer once a week for strength training to help her with back pain. However, she often talks about being tired,…

5x5 lifting - last set to failure?
I've just started a variation of the 5x5 lifting but with dumbells and did the last set to failure last night. I've read the excellent summary on this site and various other sites and am not sure I should have done the last set to failure. Can someone please clarify, I can't find the answer via the search? Thanks, Steve

Odd taste in my mouth - like I've been drinking cream
I've only been at this a few of weeks where I'm conciously trying to watch what I eat and make sure I get enough protein, but for the past few days I've had this taste in my mouth like I've drunk a cup of cream. I drink tea with milk, but have done forever and not noticed this. So I'm trying to determine: - is this a side…

MFP calorie estimate / eating back calories - miscalculation
This is all rounded to make it easy to do the maths. If my TDEE is 2400 calories. I assume I burn more calories in my waking hours, so let's assume I burn 50 calories an hour during the 12 hours I'm asleep and 150 calories an hour during the 12 hours I'm awake. I'm trying to lose weight so am eating 2000 calories a day. So…

5x5 Dumbells or Smith machine
I'm looking to start a version of 5x5 lifting but we don't have barbells in the gym at work. I found a programme for dumbells online that includes bench press, curls, squats, deadlifts, shoulder press - which may not be perfect but seems like a workable start. However, my gym also has a smith machine and I wondered if I…

Protein bar - worth it?
I have a token for a shop that I work near. After next week I'm not going to be here so I need to spend this money this week. There's nothing I need and it's a pretty small running shop but they sell Clif Builder Protein bars and I was considering buying some to help my get my protein as I'm struggling to eat enough. But…

Found this forum yesterday - looking for new friends
That title sounds more desperate than it was meant to but I can't think of anything better. I've had MFP on my phone for a while but just noticed this forum yesterday and from reading some posts it looks like people really get a lot out of supportive friends. So I thought I'd try and build a network of people who can keep…
