We've landed in Connecticut
So my husband has been in CT at the New London Sub Base for a few months but he just recently got orders that I could join him. I got here two weeks ago and I've only managed to meet one other spouse. There's no spouse club or organization here because it's mostly a training facility and there aren't a lot of families.…

At My Goal Weight
So it's been a year, and I'm at my goal weight! 169 lbs to 135 lbs in. . . well. . . a year. But still, I'm very happy with my progress. From here I think I'm going to start strength training and possible set a goal to lose another 5-10 lbs. Right now though, I'm very happy to have gotten here. Here's the photo that…

How will you know
I see a lot about goal weights and such on this site, but weight is just a number, so I'm wondering how will you know when you've "arrived" at your goal? If you get to your goal weight will you want to lose more? Build muscle? Maintain? Is there something aside from weight that you'd like to see happen with your body? Will…

Whether you believe in starvation mode or not. . .
Please read this before you start restricting below 1200 calories. It's the other part of the 1950s starvation study that everyone talks about. Apparently no one ever reads this part, which is much scarier to me than the possible slowing of the metabolism. The participants in the study were psychologically healthy when…

Jeans NSV
So I have been wearing the same two pairs of jeans that fit me for the past few weeks-- I have been too small for my 12s but I wasn't yet small enough for most of my 10s that are left over from before my post-divorce weight gain. I had two pairs of 10s that were stretch and they have fit me since I started losing weight.…

Strength training for Dummies
I have lupus and am limited on exercise. I also live in a small town with no gym and for the next few weeks I'm in my parents' house (no possibility for adding equipment). I have been walking exclusively for exercise since that's all I've been able to do. I would like to work on building strength and muscle and I was…

lunch meat comparison
Does anyone know if there's a significant nutritional difference between getting sliced turkey breast from the deli vs buying pre-packaged versions? Is there, for example, a difference in sodium? It kind of seems like there wouldn't be since the deli gets the turkey breast pre-packaged as well; anyone know for sure?

Split Pea Soup
This recipe takes awhile but it turned out pretty well. You could substitute the chicken broth/boullion with a ham bone or salt pork but of course that would change the caloric content quite a bit! It takes awhile to cook and you have to make sure it's done. Also it's supposed to serve 6 but a whole serving is too much for…

Post-Wisdom Teeth Extraction Food?
I just had all four of my wisdom teeth extracted and am on an all liquid/mushy food diet while I heal. I've been having tomato soup, jello, pudding, apple sauce, and the like but I'm getting bored. Anyone have any good recipes for liquidy stuff I could have? Thanks in advance!

Interesting Science/Medicine Blog
I don't know if this blog is well known or widely read, but I have been reading some articles on it lately that I've really been enjoying. It's supposed to be written by a cancer surgeon and it takes on a lot of the pseudoscience/ "quack" doctors/nutritionists etc; shows how their work is iffy or bad science. I'm not…

Weight loss due to illness
I have been VERY sick for the past few days and as a result I've had a hard time keeping even the most basic fluids down. I finally got some anti-nausea medication from my doctor because I was so dehydrated, but I weighed this morning and was down 5 pounds. I only counted 4 because I hadn't eaten breakfast, but I'm…

Navy spouses?
I'm looking for other positive Navy spouses out there (other branches welcome too of course!) that I can talk to. I'm isolated at the moment (not on a base, or even near one, until January) and new, and a lot of the seasoned spouses on the Navy's websites are pretty harsh and condescending. I'm really looking for a…

The best NSV so far
So as you may or may not know my husband and I have been separated while he's completing "unaccompanied training" for the Navy. I came up to Connecticut to see him for the Thanksgiving week and as soon as I got out of the car he said "Wow you've gotten skinny!" Definitely made all this work seem worthwhile, and also has…

What exactly constitutes a "plateau"?
Can someone tell me how you define "a plateau" and how long one normally lasts? How long do you wait for changes to take effect before you declare yourself plateaued? Just curious, because people seem to have a lot of different definitions.
-
silly NSV
So I looked down this morning an realized-- I have calf definition :D That's never happened before, even before I was overweight I was always pretty mushy. I'm not getting ripped by a long shot, but it's nice to see some muscle on me for a change. :)

retaining water with exercise
I have seen a few posts on here about how the body retains water to repair muscle tissue after a workout (hope I got that right :) ) Would that just be strength training exercises or should I expect it with any new workout routine (aerobic dance)? Also is that something that happens every workout or just when you…

First exercise DVD
So I've been plateaued for a long time, and I'm in my healthy weight range but definitely not toned because I can't do any high intensity workouts. My doctor had me on a strictly walking regimen for a long time. But I had an appointment yesterday and he said I can do a little more now if I want to, so I came home and…

Awkward. . . the anti-NSV
So I had my rheumatologist appointment today at 11 am (which is 1 pm in rheumatologist time). I had to get up and drive 4 hours to my appointment and for some reason when I'm in the car that long my legs swell really badly. So normally I go up the night before, stay in a hotel, and see him the next morning, but this time I…

Exercise during winter months
Ok I feel like I've given these facts a thousand times and you guys probably already know them, but I'm going to give them again just in case. I am staying with family who won't allow exercise machines, I live in a town with no gym or pool, and my doctor has my exercise relegated to walking only. So I've been walking…

Finally
I have been on this plateau for a couple of months I think-- it's like once I hit 145 I just could not get any more weight to come off. So I upped my calories and my exercise, and two weeks later I've finally started losing again. Here's hoping it continues! 9 lbs to go!

Living in Connecticut
So my husband just graduated from Navy boot camp and is doing his specialty training in Connecticut. I'll be moving there soon (New London, Groton area) and we'll be there for the winter so I was just wondering how cold it gets, whether it snows a lot, and if I need a new wardrobe, basically. :P At the very least I need…

Modified exercise program help
Having lupus comes with serious joint pain throughout my body-- from my ankles, knees, hips, spine, shoulders, and elbows, to my wrists and hands. My doctor has told me that I can walk, swim, or do very light stretching exercise like maybe pilates or yoga. I have been walking, but now that it's winter I'd like to get a DVD…

Attempt at a photo NSV
Sorry if it doesn't work, I've been unsuccessful so far at uploading pics ;) Anyway my NSV is that I found this awesome dress for only 15 dollars on sale, and no one else in my group could wear it so they suggested I try it and it fits awesomely. Hopefully I'll be joining my husband soon (he just graduated from Navy boot…

Navy Graduation
So I have arrived at my husband's Navy graduation, ALL by myself :) I don't think I'll be running around in my car downtown (that's why God invented taxis) BUT I'm feeling much more confident, can't WAIT to see my husband and I actually really likes Chicago so far. Everyone is so friendly, which I was not expecting. I am…

Going to Chicago in the Morning
Help? lol Seriously I've never driven alone in a big big city like that, I've always had a navigator. I do have GPS on my phone but I can't look while I'm driving. I'm armed with lots of maps and toll money but I was wondering if anyone who has been to Chicago has any tips for a first time visitor.

Healthiest sushi roll?
I don't know that much about sushi, but my husband loves it. He graduates from Navy basic training on Friday so we planned to go out for sushi to celebrate. I am wondering, with the few sushi places I've been to all being different, how I should order. The restaurant we chose isn't in the database. I guess I know the…

Road Trip-- advice?
Would you pack your own food? What would you pack? I'll be in the car for 3 days and in a hotel with no refrigerator for two. Thoughts?

Cutting down on sodium :/
A few months ago my goal became to cut out as much sugar from my diet as possible, so I started making changes. That was really pretty easy-- there's usually a sugar free version or at least a no-sugar added, and I use splenda a lot. But now I am wanting to cut down on salt and I'm finding that much harder. After all there…

Have I "plateaued" or my body just done losing?
I have already read the topics on plateauing and I still have a question-- hope that's ok and not considered rude. :) I have lupus at a level of severity that was once considered terminal. Now I'm considered chronic thanks to a somewhat experimental treatment, but I still have a lot of symptoms, so I have some challenges…

Jeans recommendations for a hourglass shape
I know for us girls (and maybe guys for all I know) jeans shopping is a challenge to say the least. I have a smaller waist but bigger hips and thighs, and I was wondering if anyone of similar shape could throw out some recommendations for jeans that work for you. I recently got a pair of Lee's Comfort Fit in bootcut and…
