Healthiest sushi roll?

I don't know that much about sushi, but my husband loves it. He graduates from Navy basic training on Friday so we planned to go out for sushi to celebrate. I am wondering, with the few sushi places I've been to all being different, how I should order. The restaurant we chose isn't in the database. I guess I know the basics like avoid the deep fried ones or anything with cream cheese, but other than that I'm clueless. And yeah it has to be a roll; I just can't do raw pieces of fish on rice. The hubby loves them though. (yet he won't eat lettuce, go figure) :P

I get the California roll; it's crab(imitation), avocado & cucumber. Some places will even make it with brown rice!

That's what I normally get, mainly because I'm a sushi newbie, and I do like it. Just wondering if there are better options.

I was going to suggest sashimi... just raw fish...

I LOOOOOOVE sushi, and I still eat it about once every 2 weeks... It's good for you! I order hand rolls, they are wrapped in seaweed and have much less rice than regular rolls.

Veggie rolls are a good way to go, too. I love getting a cucumber roll with my Cali roll! Have fun!

ask if they have brown rice
    specify easy on the rice
ask for light mayo or even better no mayo
fill up on appies like sunomono salad (thin clear noodle, vinergary sauce, cucumber and crab...soo good) and edamame beans!!

Spicy stuff is good for you too, I usually get a spicy tuna or salmon roll, sunomono salad with crab and split edamame.... PERFECT!

Whenever I go eat sushi, I just pick random items off the menu. You can ask if it's been fried or has cream cheese (cream cheese is actually healthier than hard cheeses, if you buy the good stuff). Sushi is some of the healthiest food you can eat. Just keep an eye on the carbs. Asian food is high in carbs.

Getting sashimi would be the best. Also, having edamame as an appetizer isn't too bad. I also sometimes get an ahi tuna salad . . . if it is offered.

But remember, it is only one night and a night of celebration at that! Just do your best and the next day you can go back to your regular eating.

    Best wishes :flowerforyou:

I eat California rolls most often, and I'm not a sushi newbie. It's just that I like my sushi "well-done".

Maki Hand Rolls - perfect serving of rice, chunk of fresh raw tuna/salmon/mackerel one of these, some cucumber, daikon...

Futo Roll - TONS of vegetables!!!!

Sashimi - chunk sliced fresh raw seafood - tuna, salmon, mackerel, scallop, some will also include cooked-chilled octopus... comes with daikon threads which give a GREAT CRUNCH... I cant eat rice so I go for the sashimi plates... and my sushi chef (who is also my good friend) always gives me his homemade fresh jellyfish salad which is full of vegetables and a very healthy vinaigrette for dressing...

"spicy" also usually indicates a high mayo content. I love anything with smoked salmon, or tuna jalapeno. It just depends on your taste, there's also yellowtail scallion rolls. Lots of rolls with just fish +veggie available. Look around and maybe try something new : -)

Generally speaking they should all be "OK" Anything without too much mayo and more wasabi and protein or veg in it is good! :) x

and now I'm craving sushi... ha
  • See if they have a Kanisu roll. It's imitation crab, carrots, roe, or whatever other veggies they happen to use all wrapped up in thin cucumber slices. No rice. Topped with rice vinegar. DELICIOUS! (to me anyway but I loooove all sushi )

You can request that they use less rice if you are worries about it.

California rolls and salmon rolls are your safest bets. Avoid rolls with tempura, though they're delicious. Mmm, I want sushi.

just eat whatever you want. moderation is fine, it's not going to kill you.

There are several others that are awesome tasting, but you'll prolly not get them, such as the eel roll or alaskan roll

spicy mayo indicates mayo.. spicy is usually just hot or chili sauce.

But when they list "Spicy Tuna" or "Spicy Salmon" it is a mayo mix without specifying "mayo" on it.

Avoid anything with Tempura or a creamy sauce and you should be good to go!

    Thanks for the great suggestions!

Spicy- anything is Kewpie Japanese mayo mixed with Sriracha ... in general....

You can always ask for that on the side so you can control the amount you have...

Not necessarily. Some places use spicy mayo to make it spicy... others just add red pepper and wasabi to the chopped tuna/salmon. I LOVE spicy tuna handrolls, and only one place I have been to used spicy mayo to make their tuna into spicy tuna.

I usually get a salmon roll and some nigiri (I know you can't handle nigiri yet) or a tuna roll. Instead of salad, I get the miso soup because it has less calories (unless you skip the dressing). A good nigiri starter is the krab (fake stuff) or the shrimp because it's cooked, but it's served in nigiri style. It's a great practice nigiri.

    Have fun!

Huh, weird. Maybe it's a regional thing? I eat lots of sushi, but I've really only frequented many places in Florida and NYC. And, well, all of them, have had mayo-based "spicy tuna" rolls. I'm interested in this non-mayo version...
