12K Race Report
I ran the 36th Annual "Lake Run 12K" in Lake Oswego on Saturday. I had a lot of fun, so I figured I'd post a race report. The course basically runs through a wooded residential area, with some rolling hills, around a lake. When we moved to the area, about nine years ago, one of our friends was running in this race. I…

Using A Moving Average To Track Your Weight Loss

NSP - (Need Smaller Pants)
I went out shopping with my wife over the weekend and she kept steering me towards the jeans. She knows I hate shopping for clothes so, after a couple of failed attempts to get me interested in the jeans, I asked "What's the deal?" :grumble: "All your jeans are getting too baggy! We need to get you some new pairs to show…

NSV - Running Related
NSV: I've actually worn out my first ever pair of running shoes! :-) After about 6 months and 300 miles, my old Brooks Adrenalines are toast. I didn't realize how bad they were until I compared them to the new ones. :noway: I ran in the new shoes for the first time today and it was great! So much more comfortable.…

Ran My Second 5K Race
Yesterday I ran my second 5K race. (The Susan G Komen "Race For the Cure" in Portland, Oregon.) I ran my first back in June and finished in 31:30. I was a little disappointed by the time, since I'd run a 5K in just under 30 minutes during my training runs. I put it down to the heat and my inexperience with racing (I…

We don't need your @#$%#% supplements!!
The NFL season is almost upon us, so I've started listening to more sports-talk radio during my commute. Sure enough, I've started hearing the ads for the miracle supplements which will increase my testosterone levels, restore lost energy and improve my sex drive. Now, in the past, the sultry voice of the woman on the ad…

45 lbs down!
I've been feeling a bit discouraged recently because I haven't lost any weight in a couple of weeks. I decided to compare some pictures of me now (at around 243 lbs) with pictures of me from about 2 years ago (before MFP) when I was at my heaviest - just under 290 lbs. I'm not ready to start sharing pictures of my flabby…

NSV - Ran my first 5K
After about two months of training I went from only just being able to run a mile to running a 5K in 31 minutes 30 seconds. I had hoped to run a bit faster, but in the end I was just happy to complete the race without walking. It was a lot warmer than when I'd been training. I know, 77F is not hot - but here in Oregon I…

Feel Like I Flipped a Switch
So, this morning I decided to do some push-ups. Been working on 'em, off and on, for a couple of months now. Did 3 reps of 12 and was starting to feel a bit tired. Came to the 4th rep and decided to do 15! I gritted my teeth and got through them OK. Jumped up and had this huge grin on my face! Stripped down ready to get in…

NSV - Getting to the Top of the Hill
Right outside my front door I have a challenge. A big steep challenge! It's a hill. The sidewalk only goes half way up the road - because that's where the houses stop, but also because you have to be crazy to want to walk up it. Or so I thought! I decided to make it the start of one of my walking routes - and, the…

Changing *what* I eat not *how* I eat it.
I had dreams that my "weight loss journey" would include increased will-power and the ability to eat more slowly. I guess, eventually, that may happen - but I'm here to tell you that it hasn't happened yet!! I still tend to wolf my food down really fast. I'll open up my lunch box and tell myself that I'm going to…

One more reason to lose weight; It may help your brain to fu
Just read an interesting article ("Elevated BMI Is Associated With Decreased Blood Flow in the Prefrontal Cortex Using SPECT Imaging in Healthy Adults") that includes the following conclusion : ... these results add to a growing body of literature implicating that decreased function/decreased blood flow in the prefrontal…

10 Things I've Learned in the First 10 Weeks
1) Despite the fact that it took me about 25 years to get this overweight and unfit, you can make NOTICEABLE changes in just 10 weeks. 2) I had gradually been reduced to only using about 10% of the clothes that I own. The rest either didn't fit or "made me look fat". I'm slowly reclaiming my stuff. 3) I'm lucky. I…

Latest small NSV
I've been feeling kinda bummed that, although the scales say I've lost about 20 lbs, I don't notice much reduction in the size of my belly. Then, yesterday, I noticed that my favorite jacket is starting to feel quite loose! A few months back, the jacket was starting get a bit "snug" (think wetsuit) when I zipped it up -…

Two NSV's Today
1. Climbing about 15 stories-worth of stairs with a bunch of 8th graders on a school field trip and not being the most out-of-breath adult. (I was so grateful that I'd been working out more, because a couple of months ago it would've nearly killed me.) As it was, I was breathing hard but didn't really break a sweat.…

Less Waste
My NSV has to do with waste (rather than my waist) I've always bought a lot of fruit and veg when I do the grocery shopping (because I knew I was SUPPOSED to) and my wife used to complain that it would just sit in the fridge and spoil. (Especially things like cucumber, cherry tomatoes and celery, which she doesn't…

Avocados are high in dietary fibre - who knew??
Just got a shock when I added 1/2 an avocado to my foods for today - registered as 4 grams of fibre! Just one more reason to love avocados!

Wish Me Luck
I'm leaving the USA tomorrow for a couple of weeks to visit my family in England. (To cut a long story short, my mum is sick and scheduled for surgery. It's been a couple of years since I last saw her, so it's time for a visit.) I won't have my phone (Verizon Droid won't work over there) and I'm not sure how easily I'll be…

Trying Again! I want to be "overweight"
Last year I got inspired, mainly by an up-coming Spring Break trip to Mexico, and between mid-January and the end of March I lost 35 pounds (down to 255 from 290). I felt great, fitting into jeans and other clothes that I hadn't worn in a couple of years! I had plans to be down to 235 by the end of the year.....…
