become a runner, safely gradually in 10 weeks, alternative t
I've been sharing this with some of my pals. I have used it with clients for years. Modifications may be made, and my disclaimer, although I am certified through ACSM, and I have been a trainer, I do not know you. Please check with your doctor before starting anything new. Now, if you want something more gradual and maybe…

toning shoes....the facts, not the anecdotes
Yesterday, Yahoo posted an article that Reebok has a settled a suit, to refund customers on toning shoes, based on false advertising claims. I have posted information about this before from one of my personal training certifications. The only way these shoes MIGHT have helped, is that they got people walking, who THOUGHT…

7 laws of lean people....tracking calories causes stress?
So I saw this article posted on yahoo today. And while I agree with some of it, I disagree with some of the implications. For instance once of the laws is supposedly, "lean people eat fat", so they have pictures of potato chips in the article, instead of fish, almonds, olive oil Secondly, they said "lean people don't diet"…

any websites like MFP for budgeting?
I am having so much success with this. I figured that if I had someone checking on me to make sure I'm staying in a financial budget, it might help. I have found some free online budget websites like mint.com, but I worry about security. Anyone have any suggestions? I figure if I'm managing my health on line, why not my…

to all who think bananas and potatoes are BAD....
Read this article from Runner's world about the wonderful benefits of potassium for runners, with a yummy soup recipe at the end. http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-242-300--8955-1-1X2X3-3,00.html The article talks about having bananas and water at the end of a marathon. Well, what about potatoes? Harder to…

bust through training plateau: great article
Now I realize many of you know what periodization is. To a good trainer, it is key. This article is not from someone trying to sell their plan, book or video as the "new" way to lift, or the best way to "shred". This is an organization that researches and provides great objective and scientific information to fitness…

average calories or varied?
I'm just wondering how many of you average out an amount that is consistent versus eating an extra 1200 exercise calories one day and 300 another day, and none on a rest day. I hired a dietician (before doing MFP) actually 2 dieticians. One dietician told me 1800 calories per day, with my physical activity and exercise.…

to be lean, don't lean on the machine!
it's a cheesy pun, but I see people lean on exercise cardio machines all the time, or they hang off them. People, you are NOT getting as effective of a workout. I own a gym, and I'm a trainer. People who have decided or have been told they cannot run, ask me how they can increase their workload on a treadmill. Typical…

running hills...ideas?
I've got a good foundation back on my running. Now I'm adding speed work, tempo and I want to really work on my hills, since my next half marathon is really hilly. I always incorporate hills into my long runs, but I want to "bound" up hills too because I read that it helps increase stride length. And I push and stop my…

which marathon or half are U training for?
Just signed up for another 1/2 marathon in Leavenworth, Washington during their Oktoberfest. Leavenworth is a Bavarian town in the Cascade moutains. It is supposed to be a hilly course, so I may not get my best time, but it should be really scenic! Would love to hear about some marathons or half marathons you are training…

4th of July piece of trivia...
Happy 4th everyone! Just thought I would share something really cool that I didn't know until I read the book "John Adams" last year. Maybe a lot of you already know this, but Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died within a couple hours of each other on July 4, 1826. That was the 50th anniversary of the adoption of our…

Hello!!!! Other personal trainers out there?
I am a personal trainer certified through ACE and ACSM. Wondering if I am alone. I sometimes respond to fitness questions, and I have gotten some friends off it that have liked or appreciated what I had to say. Just wondering if there are others like me.

considering 9 weeks of "boot camp"
I own a small town gym. I'm a trainer. I teach Pilates, Zumba and other classes. Been doing my strength program, and I'm training for a 1/2 marathon in October. But I have a new trainer at my gym. She is an army master trainer, and I love taking her kettlebell classes. We are having a boot camp from July6-August 31. I want…

protien needs for runners.
I remember at an American College of Sports Medicine workshop I attended, I was told by a professor from Conneticut, with a doctorate in physiology, that the group that needs the most protien grams per kg are female runners at high altitudes. She went into lots of technical terms as to why that was the case. I have also…

o.k. tell me about your euphoric moment aka runner's high!
A sunny, warm morning is the best in the northwest. We always appreciate it more because we do get more rain than most. Everything is soooooooo green and fresh from the rain, and the sun warms my soul and shines on all the glorious sights around me. Then I took a 40 minute walk with a friend. After that I started my run,…

How stupid I feel.
I helped my husband set up his profile. I couldn't figure out why his calorie goal was 2800 per day. But I figured he's a man. Maybe it's just like that. I wrote a post, asking for suggestions. I finally looked at his settings, and we had set his goal to gain 1 pound per week, instead of lose.....Well, he followed the…

I need a man's opinion....
o.k. so my husband has been doing MFP for one week. Because of all his bycyling, his calorie allotment was up to 4500 calories a day. He was always under, and he's eating more than he used to. Today he said, "YEAH, YOUR MY FITNESS PAL WORKS REAL WELL. I JUST GAINED 4 POUNDS! Men, how many calories does MFP say you can eat.…

Any idol fans out there? I never cared. I don't even have a t.v. but when I found out that Stefano went to my former neighborhood high school, I had to check it out on line. Then I discovered James. I love to be active, especially outdoors. You?
Hi, I've been on here for about 2 weeks. I'm a trainer, and I needed a better way to track what I eat and what I do. This is great for my clients too. I would love to find other friends who maybe have the following. You love to run, hike, camp, ride a bike, dance, do Zumba, sing, tap. But you are real, and you struggle at…
