Read this article from Runner's world about the wonderful benefits of potassium for runners, with a yummy soup recipe at the end.
http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-242-300--8955-1-1X2X3-3,00.html
The article talks about having bananas and water at the end of a marathon. Well, what about potatoes? Harder to supply but twice the postassium.
I love that MFP let's us know how much postassium we're getting!
Now you can enjoy those wonderful foods, guilt free.

Pringles are made from potatoes, and I usually have a serving of them with a sandwich after I hit the gym. Pringles are the ultimate post workout food0

Nothing like a PBJ with banana on potato bread.. Love it.. Throw in some fluff for the instant sugar kick and you have a hell of a post workout snack.0

There are some people and ads on this site, that say bananas and potatoes will keep you from losing weight but cause they're high glycemic. So I was really happy to find this article.0

potassium
I track it in my diary to make sure I get enough. I get a lot from tomatoes, milk, spinach, and soy.0 -
Many old school pro cyclist carry a bag of cooked red potato’s on their long rides and races for energy and nutrients for replenishment and repair. Healthy, easy to eat, cheap, and a great convenient source of energy.0

I didn't know so many people ran a marathon everyday... interesting.0

Bananas and Potatoes (I have never been fond of potatoes) do have some good nutrients, but I can think of many other vegetables or fruits that have the same, if not more potassium and other nutrients I would rather have without the starchiness and the glycemic index load...............
Spinach has more potassium than bananas and brocolli and carrots are just under bananas. i would rather have those foods any day compared to a banana that send my blood sugar soaring sky high.0 -

That's true, but replacing those glycogen stores in your muscles is not a bad thing. I'm not diabetic, and I don't have a problem with blood sugar, and I eat all those other foods you mentioned too. I just am pretty tired of hearing people knock 'em. If you have a blood sugar problem, then maybe you don't want to eat them. But they are perfectly fine as part of a balanced meal plan.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Hire a good Registered Dietician, with an up to date knowledge of sports nutrition. Once I did this I stopped being "afraid" I was eating all the wrong foods. I learned about timing, when to eat high and low glycemic foods and most importantly, how many calories per day I should be having for my weight loss and muscle building goals.
You've got to do what works for you. But as for me, I run. Therefore I will enjoy my occasional banana and potato.0 -

Ya, everything in moderation... pass the chocolate0 -
We had homemade potato chips for dinner last night with banana bread for dessert! Yummy :bigsmile:0

I like potatoes but don't eat them much because of the carbs and calories. I LOATHE bananas with a passion. They are just plain nasty (to me). You can get plenty of potassium from other sources.0

I used to track it but I found that so many entries didn't have the potassium content that I nearly always had to go somewhere else to find it anyway. After hunting it down it seemed I was getting plenty so I just took it off.0 -

Thanks. I think the people disagreeing with me didn't read the article, like I'm stating that bananas and potatoes are the ONLY place to get postassium. Not saying that, just saying they're not bad. For instance, yesterday I had a small Yukon potato, only 110 calories (THAT'S HIGH?????), (with 780 mg of potassium) very satisfying with brocolli, and a nectarine on the side. And a little feta cheese. Very low lunch in calories, and over 1400 mg of postassium in the whole meal. I'm pretty sure that helped on my long run today.0 -

This is what I was saying also................There are foods that provide more potassium then potatoes and bananas.
Bananas because of the high sugar content, send me to a binge status..............
I don't like potatoes and used to choke them down as a child, no matter how they were fixed. I was probably the only kid that didn't like potato chips and french fries.
I would rather get my nutrients from foods I enjoy.0 -

not a problem. As I've said before, if something works for you, great. It sounds like you're getting some healthy stuff inside. I just posted this because people often slam bananas and potatoes on this site. And for people who enjoy them, like me, I'm simply pointing out they serve a marvelous purpose. Enjoy!0 -
Leave the skin on those potatoes! That's where the good stuff is.0

Potatoes are not that high in Potassium. They have a good amount, but I have just visited several websites and the range for a Yukon Gold potato (and this is for a medium potato) is between 400 and on the high end 680 mg of potassium) - so that 780 mg is grossly over estimated.0 -

Oh no! I guess it's not worth it then. I had better not eat them. In fact maybe I better had not trust any of the nutrition breakdowns on this site. Whatever shall I do?
joking. Enjoy your day and whatever healthy food you can get and all the exercise you love! Peace.0 -

Back off a little! You stated in a post here that you do not care for bananas and potatoes and would rather get your nutrients elsewhere. Please give others the same option. Whether it is 400mg or 780 a potato is a good source of potasium. I dislike some of your nutrient sources, but I love bananas and potatoes. All this thread is stating is that they are good HEALTHY OPTIONS. I am a runner and a cyclist and bananas are a staple in that community, with plenty of benefits and no adverse effects. Some folk seem hell bent to vilify them but there is plenty of research and evidence to support their use as part of a healthy diet. If you don't like them don't eat them. But don't make them out to be some horrible food choice. That is simply incorrect. Give others some room! You make some good healthy choices that I don't care for, but they are good choices. So are potatoes and bananas.0
