My nutritionists advice for an endomorph - what you eat
From my blog: So we know that I'm approaching my year on MFP and that I've been stuck for six months going on seven months now. So what have I learned? Losing weight and getting in shape comes down to diet & exercise. For some people, that is more than enough. If you are an ectomorph, you will find gaining weight a chore…

What if I told you 2500 calories "clean" plus exercise works
Something I've been working is an experiment where I don't focus on such a massive deficit (to be fair, I've only done 1200 calories twice and that was a fast essentially but I notice a lot of people, particularly women, cling to 1200 calories like a life raft) and incorporate a solid cardio and strength training program.…

For the perpetually single
First off let it be known, do not turn this into a whining "my life is horrible I can't find anyone" thread. That's not what the spirit of this is about. I got divorced in 2003 at the age of 26 and have largely been single ever since. I have had two relationships since then; one lasted six months and the other a couple of…

What's up with the bros doing half-lifts
One thing I've never quite got but see often in the gym... the guys who load their bars down with a lot of weight and then proceed to do what I call "half-lifts". That means they basically go down a couple inches and then come back up. Some don't even bring their elbows down to a 90 degree angle, its that shallow of a drop…

Weight lifting - 3 sets or 12 sets?
So as a football player, in my time in the army, and as a wrestler for many years, I developed my own gym routine based off of my coaches and fitness instructors. The core was essentially get in, knock out 15 min of cardio to warm up and then lift for 45 minutes or so doing 6-8 exercises at 3 sets or so a piece. Sometimes…

Depression caused from living alone
http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/23/health/living-alone-depression/index.html?hpt=hp_bn10 Some interesting thoughts. I know for me, I live alone and have lived alone for most of my life through a combination of me being difficult to live with (which is also why I have been predominantly single) and because I have little desire…

Yeah baby I need some weight lifting advice and information
So this rock and roll clown is going to be moving away from heavy cardio and back into a good weight lifting routine. I'm currently sitting at 220 lbs. My normal weight lifting routine is eight exercises, 3 sets each, plus 30 min cardio 3x a week (day 1 lower body, day 2 upper body, day 3 total body) I notice in the gym a…

Acceptable Body Fat %
What is your goal body fat % that you are trying to reach? What do you find acceptable in general % wise? I'm currenly at 22% body fat per the army standards (weight coupled with neck measurement and waist measurement and height). I have heard and seen a lot of commentary on if men can't see their abs that they are "fat &…

Article on kids seeking affirmation on their looks through y
http://www.hlntv.com/article/2012/02/22/am-i-pretty-videos-shame-or-sham?hpt=hp_bn13 Sound familiar? How damaging do you think this is? Considering a mathematical bell curve, only a few individuals in a group would be considered very attractive; the largest group of people would be considered average, and an equally…

Sociological discussion on remaining single for a long time
I've been single largely for most of the nine years since my divorce. I've had a couple of short-term relationships but nothing really lasts very long, for a variety of reasons. Mainly I have not ever found anyone I really connect with. I've noticed that many people are terrified of this, and hop from relationship to…

Remember to forget to relent to surrender
Lyrics from Otep. They hold much meaning for me, be it in the dietary struggle or when I'm putting weight up at the gym or going for that last mile on the track. This is a war, and you make the enemy play by your rules. Keep up the work.

The Fat Mindset - how it can destroy you
There are three basic areas in life which we must maintain and support to live a healthy life. It's kind of like a triangle, and when one of the legs of the triangle is weak, the entire structure collapses. Those three areas are the physical body, the intellectual/mental facilities, and the emotional/spiritual health of an…

I can't. The enabler of failure
Little motivational post for the day. Nothing too mind bending but I'd like to you to consider those two words. "I can't" Short for "I cannot do something" By speaking or thinking these words, you are saying that you fail and that you are resigned to this. Negative emotions or feelings are very powerful anchors that keep…

There is no silver bullet or magic pill - it takes work
Harsh title but I felt it is needed. Perhaps its that this is the time of year when people decide to be healthier because it's magically a new year, but it frustrates me to watch a truckload of people show up with unrealistic expectations and then give up a week later. So here's the thing... you want to lose weight? You…

Why numbers don't always work
For september, my caloric deficit numbers are as such: Week 1: 4800 Week 2: 5200 Week 3: 4900 Week 4: 2200. By the math that means I should have lost (17,100 calorie deficit = 4.8 lbs assuming 1 lb of lard = 3500 calories. Actual weight loss for me in Sept as of tonight = 0.5 lbs. I've always known that numbers are general…

Two months and 20 lbs
I started on this, one of many attempts at losing weight, July 6th after stepping on the scale and seeing 242 lbs staring me in the face. Why is that number important? I promised myself I'd never get over 240 again. Of course being happy with 235 was not healthy either. My goal weight is 195-205 and that extra 30-40 lbs…

Monthly weigh in - 14 lbs dropped - 24 more to go
14 lbs gone in July. Twenty-Four more pounds to lose in all. August kicks off with full blown soccer conditioning. Hoping for 6-8 lbs this month (as I get closer to the goal weight I realize that the weight loss is going to skid to a crawl and that this from here on out is a gradual thing)

Overcoming the Plateau Successfully
I posted here a couple days ago venting some frustration. My weight loss had stalled, and in fact had reversed itself on my weekly weigh in. The scale had reported that I had gained 2 lbs since the previous week. Of course, when you are in weight loss mode and you see something like that, it's kind of like someone punching…

The plateau weight that threatens to derail people
Hey all I've basically lived at my plateau weight since my mid 20s. It is the weight that my body WANTS to be at, no matter how hard I try, but is still about 30 lbs overweight and it all hangs off of my gut so physically everytime I look in a mirror I see it there taunting me. The calorie-in calorie-out mantra is only…

The longest road
Someone showed me this app on my iPhone and I have found it tremendously useful. Like a lot of you, I have walked the road of the overweight and obese most of my adult life. Growing up, and in high school... I was an athlete. At 6'2, I weighed between 185-195 lbs and through the army I got up to about 220. After the army I…
