when scale numbers really count
WEIGHTED CHIN UPS! By far the best aspect of actually dropping scale weight is bar ability. Currently 85kg and even that makes it a lot harder than previous lower weights. So this a thread to post about your maxes. (vids if you have them) Me: +65kg@80kg BW http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X8vtAHmJuM one arm chinup @78kg…

Rippetoe on unilateral exercises
http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/most_recent/rippetoe_goes_off Interesting article. As someone who currently has a groin injury and CAN'T squat, I don't really agree with that much in this article. (FWIW can't BSS either ) And Bret Contreras's podcast re this article is here.…

Question for the lifters
How long has it taken you to reach the following 1rm's? (If you don't test 1rm's you can use a 1rm calculator but they aren't that accurate above 5reps IMO) Squat: to parallel or below Bench: paused Deadlift: no hitching Males: squat 140kg/ 300lb bench: 100kg/225lbs deadlift: 180kg/ 400lbs Females: squat 75kg / 165lbs…

anyone else gaining weight?
Feels like 99% of people I talk to are all about losing weight. Anyone actually trying to gain? If so, how long have you been gaining? What sort of calorie surplus are you on? (counting or not?) How is it going psychologically? (are you affected by fat gain easily?) Are you doing resistance training? (if not, why not?!…

fasted training for maxes (strength training)
Just wondering how others have gone with going for maximum strength numbers (1rm's) while training fasted or fed? I typically train in the afternoon so my normal sessions are fed. Most of the science on nutrient timing in regards to performance gains supports the fact that some carbs and protein pre and post workout should…

Dan Green on Westside
http://www.jtsstrength.com/articles/2013/05/29/west-of-westside/ Some interesting stuff. Especially the specificity issue I think. Russian programs are totally onto that. As virtually any lifter who’s lived in the internet era knows… There’s only one side: Westside! The training split, the max effort and speed work, the…

for those maintaining weight
Theory says BWx14-16 is approximate maintenance. Lets do a little experiment. If you have maintained weight for 2 weeks minimum. (not plateaud in weight loss as that would be artificially lowered metabolic rate from dieting already) Height: Weight: Age: avg cals: BW multiplier: (avg cals/weight) Me: Height: 5'8" Weight:…

resistance training rep ranges
Chart by Rippetoe and Kilgore. Not saying it's 100% correct but it illustrates that rep ranges have various qualities for strength/hypertrophy etc. e.g. 5 reps also promotes hypertrophy and 20 reps can help strength. Anyone who has done a 20rm squat set can attest to this I'm sure

Jim Wendler's 5 year plan
Jim Wendler’s 5 year plan 1. Your program will be based on 4 exercises: squat, bench press, deadlift and the press. 2. You will train in the weight room 2-4 days/week. 3. You will do some kind of “hard” conditioning 3 days/week. This consists of pushing the Prowler, running hills, running stadium steps or pushing a car. If…
