Sorry about the tiny gain @Ellen, but yes, staying the same the next day is certainly better than another gain. I hope it's better news in the morning for you! You're doing great to keep the carbs away for the Challenge and I'm happy for you that you can add some back in for June and still enjoy the near-ZC.

Thanks@Kate Yes, at least my son only bought one child home. That's quite a menagerie from yours LOL You must have been so worried about his health, what a frightening situation! But very glad he's through it now and hope his life is now wonderful. Ha ha yes, grandbabies are the most amazing and wonderful gift aren't they?

Just started this LCHD thing Sat. At 57 things just don't work as well as they once did. Having a hard time getting in all my protein. Set my carb goal at 50 which is still
Low enough for ketosis but high enough to live with. See ya later.

Hello Ladies. Hope you are all well. I've caught up on all your news, but have not had time to comment much. I have been so busy, I can't keep up with all the goings-on here just now. Yes, Kate and May, I have been busy in the garden. I was having quite a bit of stress last week and it seems to be resolving now slowly. Gardening helps. And I do love it. Yes, I have heard that saying of your grandfather's too May, it is lovely.

I love to be outside in the summer, and in the yard beautifying things. I also love the sun and always feel more energized and alive after being in the sun, and brighter in mood. I take vitamin D in the winter, but just soak up the sun in the summer. For a person who feels cold a lot of the time, even in summer, the sun warms me up, body and soul. I do not use sun screen either...I used to, but now feel that the chemicals in the preparations are more dangerous that the sun. So I take a few precautions, like wearing a hat so my scalp doesn't burn. My hair is now grey, but was blond when I was little , then medium brown as a young adult, then salt and pepper already in my 20's. My hair will soon be snow white like my mother's, and I wear it very short....memories of my pixie cuts as a child. Anyway, I cover up when needed, but do love the sun. I also find that eating a diet high in fat, especially with coconut oil allows the body to be better prepared against the sun. I am in Canada too though, so the sun is a little farther away where I live.

I have been working hard, and have put in long hours, however I am trying to be smart about it. I am not taking physical risks. I am pacing myself and not rushing. I move slowly since moving quickly can trigger vertigo. This probably helps my recovery from the whiplash. I see my chiropractor twice weekly, so know that even if I exert myself that I will soon see him again to make sure everything is in alignment. On Saturday he gave me a beautiful pillow to sleep with. I had already been using a special neck support pillow, but this one is so unique and feels like ti gives my head and neck much better support, so this must be helping as well.

Otherwise, I am feeling good. I feel that my stamina is excellent, especially when I compare my gardening performance to last year's. I do not tire as easily, my flexibility has improved, I am stronger and more capable. I could not believe that I carried those heavy loads all the way across the yard without hurting myself or having muscle pain the next day. I feel so good. I've had some very busy days with a lot of physical exertion, but woke the next day feeling fine, able to move freely and able to tackle the next day's challenges. There is so much to do in the garden and I haven't started mine yet, except to reseed parts of my lawn.

Today after my bloodwork, Tim Horton's coffee in a hurry along with hardboiled eggs I packed for the journey. I then spent a couple of hours back at my mother's garden, planted some gorgeous fuschia plants and impatiens, then weeded her front beds, and dug out dead roses, planted new rose bushes and geraniums in the front yard. Off to the grocery store for more eggs and meat, rushed home to take my daughters to the Dr, then to the gluten free bakery ( one daughter's 23rd birthday) then to the chiroprator, then to the Japanese restaurant for my daughter's dinner. She got to choose where we went, and I knew there would be nothing keto on the menu, but I did order gluten free and as sugar free as I could. Very cute place. Grocery shopping after that, for my daughter's party on Friday. Ice cream was part of my plan today before going ZC. This is the only time to do it...right after the bloodtest and right before my next weight loss challenge.

I am on vacation for 4 days right now, started today. Tomorrow we are going to our new Human Rights Museum, the girls, my mother and I, then out for lunch. I am planning on more carbs within reason for tomorrow, so be prepared to see me eat a burger without a bun with grilled veggies and ...gasp !, maybe some sweet potato fries ! It is also a potluck at our chiropractic office tomorrow, something we do every 1.5 months or so. The office has us choose recipes that are all grain free and sugar free ( after all, if it wasn't for these people who introduced me to this concept, I wouldn't be where I am now...)so at least most can be similar to how we eat now, but still contains more carbs than keto. I chose to make paleo cajun burgers and my daughter made a vanilla cake with mashed white beans, 6 eggs, xylitol, and fresh vanilla pods. It will have starch but at least is doesn't have wheat or even almond or coconut flour. Topped with whipped cream of course. Not sure how hungry I'll be after eating lunch, but as Ellen said, yes this is my last hurrah before going ZC. I tend to think that after eating a few more carbs or sugar, it gives us stronger resolve to continue our mission. I am kind of liking testing myself this way, and I am sure that I will be more than ready to restrict myself further. On the other hand, I can't imagine going without a treat like ice cream forever. But I can plan to work it in maybe 4 times per year....that's not too bad.

I may even indulge in an alcoholic beverage then off to bed for a good rest....... Have a lovely evening / morning everyone..... :)

@janice so glad this year shows such an improvement. When do u think your labs will be back? Setting a start date for ZC seems to really be working for you. Good luck.
I went to see my colitis specialist today. He told me that they have scientific proof that the old "fat is bad for you" is wrong & to just keep track of my symptoms. & I don't have to go back for a year (barring bad bouts), yahoo!
Finally raining here. Of course accompanied by thunderstorm & heavy winds, but it's rain. Hopefully my tender little plants survive.

@krazyforyou Hi and welcome to LCHF! If you haven't read the introduction at the top of the first page of this forum, I recommend that you do. There's lots of good information that will help give you a good start on this way of eating. LCHF is a great way to eat, especially for ladies over 50!

@Kitnthecat You sure have been keeping busy. It's so great that you have more energy than last year; it gives me hope, too! I hope your bloodwork gives great results. It'll be nice to see what level you're at before you start the ZC eating. So nice that you have a few days off; hope you enjoy them to the fullest! :)

@Sk8Kate Wow--a doctor who sees the light about fats and isn't trying to talk you out of eating them! Hope more doctors get educated about that, including mine. BTW, I read yesterday that homemade bone broth (esp beef) helps immensely with digestive problems, including colitis.

I'm down a brand new .2 lb this morning. Very nice to see! I'm doing this bit by bit, but that's so much better than stuck or gaining, which has been my life-long pattern. I'm a little surprised at how well I feel eating just animal products. I anticipated feeling a little 'off' due to change in nutrition. I still lack energy and am tired due to fibromyalgia, but I hope that changes at some point. I get exhausted just going to the grocery store. I've been getting at least 6 hrs of sleep lately, so that's improved, yay!

Speaking of bone broth, I bought some chicken parts--wings, backs, etc.---to make bone broth, as in Sally Fallon Morell's "Nourishing Traditions." I particularly want to make beef broth; just have to find a good source for grass-fed beef bones. The more I read about the value of bone broth, the more I'm convinced that I need to make it a daily part of my diet. I've always loved making homemade soups, so this shouldn't be difficult to get into a pattern. @Kitn, I think I've read that you make bone broth, right? "Nourishing Traditions" is a fascinating book. Very informative, with a whole variety of bone broth recipes. Ordered it from Amazon.

Good Morning Ladies. It's raining here too Kate, and supposed to go down to 2 or 3 the next couple of nights. I haven't planted my tomatoes yet luckily. I can always cover them if needed so they survive.

We're just about to leave for the day for another busy day. Stomach a little off this am due to the ice cream last night, but BP egg coffee will set me up well for the day.

Yes, Ellen, I am a bone broth maker. I have Nourishing Traditions as well. It's a great book. I have always made soup stock and hadn't started calling it bone broth until I began Paleo...and Sally Fallon encouraged me to boil those bones longer and add some ACV. This Bone broth routine will probably help me have a bit of variety when I go ZC, so will keep it up. I often like to have bone broth egg drop soup for breakfast when I want to eat light.

Got to run, have a great day !

Good morning/evening ladies. Coffee on deck ruled out due to gale force winds & rain (& it's too flippin cold). But sun is trying to peek out.
@Ellen thanks for the tip. Have beef soup bones in freezer & perfect day to have some broth simmering on stove.
@Janice my tomatoes aren't in ground yet either, nor my gerber (?) daisies, but should have brought inside last nite. Thanks for clearing up "bone broth" or "stock". I just realized bone broth is simply homemade soup stock (which I haven't done for a few yrs). So do you need/use a natural product for sleep? I have suffered insomnia since I was a teenager & sometimes go 2-3 days without sleep. (Possibly why I can be such a b***h some days).
@krazyforyou welcome. The ladies here have been an invaluable resource for me. (And fun)! Good luck on your LCHF journey.
Have to go clean house now. DIL to be family is coming to visit (mom, kookum, & mooshum(?spelling)). Should be interesting.
    Have a good day!

Thank you Wheatlesz girl, yes I have read and reread the first part of the forum and that is why I decided to set my carbs at 50. Haven't gotten that high yet. However I read about ice cream substitutions where someone suggested using heavy whipping cream and sugar free pudding. Well I made the darn thing and when checking the calories its 800 for one cup of whipping cream. Any other suggestions because you know calories still count

Quick little note in between events....just got back from walking through the museum for hours, then lunch, and getting ready to go out again soon.

Kate, to aid in getting to sleep, I take my allergy meds in the evening, since both cause drowsiness, but when I stopped taking the sleeping pill, I started using Natural Calm, and I think that helps. I also like chamomile tea or sleepytime tea. I used to take valerian root, and you can till buy sleep inducing tea with valerian in it. But if extra stressed I make sure I take 2 tsp not just 1 tsp of Natural Calm. Also you could try soaking in epsom salts as well to further relax and soak up more magnesium that way. I honestly did not think I could ever sleep without the sleeping pill after taking it for over 10 years, but I actually think I sleep better than ever now. I hope you see some improvement....maybe after the wedding will be when you can relax.

Oh one more thing, I try to practice mindfulness meditation too.

    https://www.womentowomen.com/insulin-resistance/what-is-insulin-resistance/

Have you guys seen this? I have been doing a little bit of research, and found some Institute of health studies on postmenopausal women and insulin resistance. I will post the summaries when I get to my computer later today. But, this article seems to sum up the findings in a clear and concise way. It is also much easier to read than the scientific research :-).

I guess this fascinates me because I have had such a struggle in my 50s with weight/carbs/belly fat. My fascination really stems from the fact that I went and had a candid discussion with my doctor and he told me basically to stop eating so much, exercise more, and stick with the Low fat low, calorie diet that I had been doing for the past 13 years and was no longer working!

I believe that many women would be vastly helped if of their doctors would state clearly that as a postmenopausal person, you will have more difficulties with carbohydrates. Here's a scientific proof and here is the diet that will help you.

@SRJennings Thanks for the link. I know I've read it before, but it was good to see it again. My brain is like a sieve. :/ I totally agree that doctors do a disservice to us (and everyone else) by their lack of nutritional understanding. I was told the same thing you were--and I DID it--for 40 years, and look where it got me. It seems that if there's not a pill to prescribe, they don't know what to do. I could go on a rant here, but I'll spare you!

So this morning I was :o to see a 1 lb gain. I was very bloated yesterday and again today; don't know what that's about. But I put my macros in the flexible keto calculator and they were 2.16, which is solidly keto. So...just one of my typical gains. ZC is very helpful, even necessary for me, but it's certainly not magic. I did have 4 carbs yesterday, don't know if I'm so resistant that it would cause the gain. I added salsa to my dinner without even thinking about it. At least it was only 1 carb.

BTW, I must be the last person to know I could take the weight loss announcements out of my news feed. Who knew--not me! Now I can track my ups and downs without heralding a fake loss all the time.

@krazyforyou Yeah, gotta watch the calories on dessert-type goodies. I haven't made any of them b/c they would perpetuate my desire for sweets plus adding what I consider 'empty' calories. Especially at that level. Some things are a great addition and folks can enjoy them w/o a problem. I'm just very prone to wanting to eat the whole batch, not just a bite, so I'm foregoing them until I'm normal weight. And then I'll have to be very careful.

About the bone broth. I love it! You're right, @GrannyMayOz, it would make a great thread. @Kitnthecat, you want to start it? You know a lot more than I do I think. I'm a soup maker from ages back, but this is a little different.
We do need to spread the word, b/c it's so nutritious. It's a good way for folks to get benefit of meat w/o having to eat a ton of it, esp if they're not particularly fond of eating it.

Hello ladies. Woke to ice on windshields this morning. Darn. Hope freezing temps didn't last long enough to hurt my plants.
Had 2 pork chops for supper, put my protein way up. So after playing with numbers on Keto calc added in extra BPC & tea for extra fat to stay in keto. Is this right?
Bone broth thread would be awesome.
Magnesium supplement-am or pm? Charley horses (leg cramps - Jane, lol) woke me up 3/4 times last nite. Poor hubby thought I was having some kind of seizure, all kinked up half on & off the bed.
Well off to paint a table I dragged out of the bush, to put in a flower bed. Inlaws sure did leave some nifty finds in their discard pile (2 acre patch). They never really threw anything away, just put it out back in case they needed it again. Have antique stoves, washing machines, vehicles & other stuff being used as planters or focal points.
    Have a good day.

Oooo, ice? Seems strange to me since it's summer here. I take magnesium in the evening most of the time. I think it helps with the muscle cramps and sleep. Even so, I still get mild ones, like it's starting to happen. I take 400 gms and don't know that I should increase it.

Just had a mug of broth. And burned my mouth with the first sip. Worth it. :) I'll go ahead and get it started.

Hi all. Sorry I havent posted for a week and I will tell you all later but just for now here is a link from the research I have been doing about cortisol, belly fat and post menopausal ladies as promissed. This site has a lot of good research in it and easy to understand info. A word of caution though when reading through a lot of articles and google searches...there is a lot of conflicting and/or out of date information going around about how to deal with it. This site and the other links in it are 90% sound. Enjoy!

    http://www.metaboliceffect.com/female-belly-fat/

This was quite interesting as well. http://www.metaboliceffect.com/15-hormonal-influencers-of-fat-loss/
Im still doing more resarch to try and complie a good clear reading list and info. Anyone(hint hint @SR Jennings, lol) who has anything they have found that might be useful and are happy to shae , thanks very much!

Will write more later. Love and hugs.xxx

Hello everyone! I haven't been on much this past week. I over did the physical exertion last Monday and set myself up for a few uncomfortable days. Feeling better and getting my energy back now. It's almost June! Can't believe how fast time flies! Meativore has been great for me and I'm certain that the animal kingdom will be my primary source of food from now on!

Love catching up and seeing what's going on with all of you. I have the final social event of the month tonight! Am looking forward to getting together with old high school friends. It's been 30 years since I graduated from high school! It's not the official reunion, just a bunch of us getting together. We had almost 400 in my class and reunions can be crazy. I think I've forgotten more of them than I can remember. The reunion is in three weeks and I plan to attend the picnic. It's the only event that's not considered to be out of town. So, when I get this one behind me tonight I will have completed this crazy month a success!

I've lost 1.4 pounds and 7.5 inches! Have a great day everyone!!

@karlottap --Way to go! That's a wonderful loss! Glad you're feeling better; it doesn't pay to over exert, esp when you have FM. Have fun finishing out your social month.

Whew. Didn't have a gain today like I expected I would. I had hoped that I would lose more by now, even in inches, but I haven't. For a brief moment I thought ZC would speed things up, but it's not looking like the chances are very good for that.

Just found this book which I have read which throws more light on our belly fat enigma. I have put the link to chapter 4. Its not too bad reading and VERY interesting.
    http://cortisolconnection.com/ch4_1.php

If you want to read it and have any questions that need explaining please just ask me. Below is an supplement that is recommended and very safe to help deal with the problem outlined in the link. Lolol. If I can find any I will be the group guinea pig!

    HSD-Balancing Supplements
As discussed in Chapter 4, HSD (11-beta-hydroxysteroid-dehydrogenase-1) is an enzyme within fat cells that is responsible for converting inactive cortisol into active cortisol, which can then serve as a potent fat-storage signal. As such, you do not want to have an overactive HSD enzyme sabotaging your weight-loss efforts. Remember, too much HSD means too much cortisol inside your fat cells and too much fat stored in your belly region.

Every major pharmaceutical company in the world is aggressively developing (and patenting) synthetic molecules to inhibit the activity of HSD and treat obesity and diabetes—but those drugs are still five to ten years away from reaching the market. Luckily, a number of natural flavonoids are known to inhibit HSD, including those from grapefruit juice (naringenin), licorice (glycyrrhizin), soybeans (daidzein and genistein), apples (quercetin), and Chinese medicinal herbs (magnolia/magnolol, Perillae frutescens, Zizyphus vulgaris, and Scutellaria baicalensis).

A very unique class of flavonoids, known as polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs), particularly tangeritin, sinensetin, and nobilitin, represent a class of "super flavonoids," extracted from citrus peels, that exhibit approximately threefold potency compared to other flavonoids. Polymethoxylated flavones are just what they sound like—flavonoid compounds with extra methoxy groups compared to "regular" flavones. Like all flavonoids, the PMFs deliver potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, but the PMF version is about three times more potent in its ability to reduce both HSD activity and cholesterol levels (clinical studies show a 20–30 percent reduction).
PMFs are wonderfully safe—and at the effective dose of 300 mg daily (see below), users will benefit from the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in addition to the HSD- and cholesterol-reducing effects. Unlike some flavonoids, such as naringin from grapefruit, there are no known risks of drug interactions with citrus-derived PMFs. (Certain grapefruit flavonoids can interfere with the liver enzymes needed to metabolize many prescription drugs.)
Our lab was the first in the world to use PMFs for inhibiting the activity of HSD, and thus also reducing systemic and local cortisol concentrations (in the liver and adipose tissue), while also promoting blood-sugar control and weight loss. As part of the SENSE Lifestyle Program, we provided supplements of PMFs (with Eurycoma root extract—see below in the section on testosterone) to a group of moderately overweight subjects. The PMFs (300 mg of citrus peel extract/day) reduced cortisol levels by 20 percent, body weight by 5 percent, body fat by 6 percent, and waist circumference by 8 percent over a period of six weeks. A longer twelve-week study showed even better results, with additional beneficial effects on reducing cholesterol (–20 percent), boosting mood (+25 percent), reducing fatigue (–48 percent), and maintaining normal testosterone levels and resting metabolic rate.

Sorry about the long read but its been very enlightening! The whole book was good reading although a bit heavy and a lot of the dietary stuff not in line with our way of thinking/life but we can take the bits that apply to us from it!
