Howdy again, y'all. It's nearly bedtime here in Peachtree Corners. I had a pretty good, but long, day. Got all my tagging done this morning at work, didn't murder any customers or employees, (or employers for that matter...), got home and put a rolled pork roast on to "fast" slow cook in my largest Crock Pot, on high, for 5 hours or so. It came out tender and delicious, with some garlic mashed potatoes (made way too many, J will be having potato pancakes for a few days...) steamed broccoli, and opened a bottle of Vinho Verde from Portugal.

Howdy y'all. It's thrilling Thursday! Supposed to get to 90 today with 50% chance of showers.
I've had some leftover pork roast for breakfast, and Lilo has been fed.
Off to the rat mines!

Howdy y'all. It's fabulous Friday!
I didn't see anything about that car, but then I was at work and don't watch TV news later anyway. Sometimes it is turned on in the break room at work, and then I might see something. Usually they have "Hot Bench" turned on in there when I'm in there around 12:30.
Well, Lilo has been fed, and I'm about to be fed. Then off to the salt races!

Howdy y'all. It's sensational Saturday! Been up since about 7:00, if you don't count D's alarm across the hall waking me multiple times between 5 and 6...I've told him and told him he needs to GET THE **** UP when it goes off the first time, because one of these days....HULK SMASH!
Anyway, I've been distracted by feeding Lilo (who ignored her food, waiting to see what I was having), feeding myself (Lilo was happy to help clean up cheese crumbs) with toast and cheese, and preparing for the end of the world, which, if you didn't know it, is now supposed to be this weekend, as in happening right now! Seems off to a dismal start, if you ask me. I decided to set up my bill payments anyway, just in case...after all, if it ends, it won't matter whether they're set up or not, as I won't need the money, will I?
We're supposed to go to a Ren Faire with a friend today. The process of getting J out of bed has begun...(this can take hours) but we were planning to leave about 10:00, which I doubt will happen. I need to pack up some snacks and bottled water, as there will be a lot of walking involved and passing out from dehydration and/or low blood sugar would not be good.
I also need to be sure to get my safari hat out of the closet. And stop at an ATM to get some cash for lunch, since I gave most of my ready cash to the delivery boy who brought Indian food last night.
No salt races today, but plenty of exercise instead!

Howdy y'all. It's scintillating Sunday!
Been up since about 8:00, though I did get up for a moment at 4 to walk off a severe leg cramp, no doubt from all the walking and sweating yesterday. I may need to get out and get some Powerade Zero in a bit. I've been distracted by feeding Lilo, feeding me, getting laundry started and maybe just a teensy bit by the internet. We had a good time at the Renaissance fair yesterday, and I brought home some cinnamon almonds. Too much sugar to have very many at once, but a very tasty treat, and one I almost always bring home from that fair. $10 for a "large" bag that really isn't all that large, but it's a once a year treat so I don't mind the expense.
One thing I like about the Renaissance fair is that I am walking around a LOT, and so I get to snack my way through the afternoon, along with sipping and quaffing copious amounts of water and a little tea. I had a small spinach pie, with a cheese and spinach filling, quite tasty. One small piece of chocolate covered bacon. For my main sweet treat though, some key lime pie on a stick, and then finished off with some smoked sausage for protein cap toward the end. I have no doubt I walked most of that off. We stopped at Moe's for dinner on the way home and I capped the day with some dry French red wine.
Well, time to move the first load from the washing machine to the dryer.
Later gators!

Howdy y'all. It's wonderful Wednesday! Tag day again already. But the fuel center won't open until 6 or 7 this morning since there is work being done on the store computer system overnight. I plan to still get there on time for a 5:00 opening and spend the time doing the tagging, cigarette count, and some extra cleaning. It might be nice to be able to do those things without having to pause to take care of customers, though no doubt I'll have to pause to explain we're not open...even though the fuel center will be wrapped with caution tape.
Supposed to get to 87 today, with no chance of rain. Not TOO bad...

Howdy y'all. It's thrilling Thursday! Another way to help keep bananas from ripening too fast is to separate them. FROM EACH OTHER and from apples, pears, etc...so they aren't each receiving so much of the gas they generate from each other, which causes them to ripen faster.

Howdy y'all. It's fabulous Friday! Wednesday we ended up opening on time as the computer upgrades had to be delayed, due to a faulty cable. They are running a new cable and the upgrades are re-scheduled for next Thursday night. We'll see how that goes. A Wednesday morning would have been a better morning for me to be opening late, and I suspect more customers will be impacted by a Friday late opening, but nothing I can do about that.
I believe onions may emit the same gas as apples, as I've read you shouldn't store apples and onions together or they will cause each other to go to overdone and rotting quickly.

Howdy again y'all. It's still fabulous Friday, but after my after dinner nap.
I buy flour once every year or two, and keep it in the freezer until it's used up. Don't have any of the brands listed.

Howdy y'all. It's sensational Saturday! Been up for maybe ... 45 minutes. Lilo and I have been fed and I've adjusted next week's CSA box order.
Now, of course, I'm getting distracted by the internet. We have orchid judging this afternoon. High is supposed to be 95! Argh!
And I was wanting to roast some root vegetables for dinner...I might do that anyway, despite the heat.

Howdy y'all. It's scintillating Sunday! I've been up for a while. Busy feeding Lilo, feeding me, unblocking the garbage disposal and removing something that was messing with it (haven't figured out just WHAT it was, but I haven't (deliberately) put anything but vegetable matter in there. Whatever it was seemed like some kind of hard fibrous thing...maybe some really overgrown bit of rutabaga...anyway, that part is in the trash and the disposal is running quietly again, and draining well.
Last night I did go with the roasted root vegetables, even though that meant keeping the big oven on for a little over an hour at 450 degrees. I used a huge rutabaga, a small turnip, a pound of purple potatoes, several small red bell peppers, half a pound of carrots, a large yellow onion, about a tablespoon and a half Mrs. Dash Extra Spicy blend, about a tablespoon of hot Hungarian paprika, and some Himalayan pink salt, all shook together in a two gallon baggie with some olive oil, then baked in a 9x13 pan for half an hour, stirred, baked for another half an hour, topped with some Mexican style shredded cheese, and a very light sprinkle of Italian bread crumbs and broiled to brown the gratin. (About 2/3 of this dish is in the fridge now for leftovers.)
Along with the roasted vegetable gratin, I made some fiddle head ferns, boiled first for 11 minutes in salted water, then drained and rinsed and sautéed with minced ramps, in ghee, with Himalayan pink salt, and pepper, and for the other side dish, I made creamy fried corn.
J was a little leery of the fiddle heads AND the corn as he wasn't fond of the fried corn his mother used to make, but trusted me that perhaps I could make a better batch. Needless to say, most of the food came from my CSA boxes.
He liked the fiddle heads well enough but thought the texture was a bit odd. And he said my creamy fried corn was OK. His mother never put any milk or cream in at all (I used milk, and a little starch to thicken) and I'm not sure how much salt and/or pepper she used. I made it the way MY mother made it, as best I remember, and wasn't chintzy with the pepper. He ate a second helping of the corn, so I guess it WAS ... OK.He also ate a second helping of the roasted vegetable gratin. All the food was on the spicy side, even if only with black pepper, so D fended for himself and didn't want any.
Need to finish up last night's dishes, and ponder laundry. And also ponder what to make with the remaining ramps. Last night was my first time cooking ramps, and I'm wondering if we can survive eating the rest raw in a salad, or if that would make everyone's breath so abominable that we have to isolate ourselves...I'll probably cook them, as J found the texture raw just a bit odd on that as well. They ARE delicious raw but awfully pungent. I gave him a small taste as I was mincing them up for the pan.
Oh, I also had a nice, healthy glass of red wine (Australian Shiraz) as I thought it would go very well with the somewhat spicy food, and it did! Of course now I've got to make more spicy food to have with the rest of the bottle...as it really doesn't go well (at least for me) with a whole lot of foods, and it's not a good "sipping" wine for me either, not that I "sip" all that much anymore. Usually a glass with a meal and that's it. I can have a glass with the leftovers tonight. I just have to come up with some side dishes, as we ate all the fiddle heads and all the corn.
Later, gators!

The ramps have been available in the weekly CSA box for a few weeks. The fiddleheads were, I'm pretty sure, the last of the season, and the ramps I still have in the fridge are likely the last available too. Ramps don't have to be cooked to be enjoyed, and in fact many people love just munching them whole, raw. I like them that way too, but as they are a bit pricy when purchased they sure don't last long if you are just munching them. Mincing them up into something you cook at least stretches them out a LITTLE bit, more depending on what you make with them.
Mincing them and cooking them reduced the pungency, as expected, and they were delicious with the fiddleheads, ghee, salt and pepper. I have never soaked onions in milk, but then I LIKE the pungency or I wouldn't be eating them anyway. And they all cook up nicely.

Howdy y'all. It's fabulous Friday! Not much rain here earlier in the week, despite the predictions, though sometimes the rain comes while I'm napping so I can't be sure of just how much actually came down.
Leftover lamb steak and small serving of mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy for breakfast.
Supposed to get to 94 today with 40% chance of rain.
Might be opening late this morning as they were supposedly re-attempting the computer work last night, and everything was scheduled to be down until 7:00. I'll be there, available to open on time, just in case. The last time they told me I might be able to open at 6:00, but since the computer work didn't happen it was a good thing I was there on time to open at the normal 5:00.

Howdy y'all. It's sensational Saturday! Only supposed to get up to 84 today with no chance of rain!
Cereal with fresh, organic blueberries (from MY bushes) was a big part of my nutritious breakfast this morning. I'm watching Windows 10 update on another screen (boring!) and Lilo is sitting on her bun warmer, which is really a small, flat, box-like computer that she likes to sit on or even drape herself across, though it's not really big enough for that.
Orchid Society board meeting this afternoon, with lunch before (if desired) at a nice restaurant with good food. We reserve the "party" room at the back for the lunch and meeting. I often get the soup of the day along with a small salad, but sometimes the soup isn't to my taste and I get some kind of breakfasty egg thing instead. They do make pretty good Eggs Benedict.
Well, off to do BIG WATER indoors for the plants.

We had some critter that was taking one bite out of each of the lower hanging tomatoes last year, that ruined approximately 1/3 of them.
I hope You stayed dry.
Roger
Get out early in the morning or very late at night and look for a box turtle. Box turtles used to do that to our tomatoes when I was growing up in Kentucky. The lowest hanging ones were as high as they could reach, but for some reason they didn't want to eat a whole tomato. They'd just take one bite and move on to the next one...
I'm really kind of amazed that the deer and/or other critters haven't eaten all the blueberries, but the two bigger bushes really are producing quite a lot this year, so I'm getting enough to have in cereal, just eat as a snack, mix with plain yogurt, feed to the sugar gliders, and I'm pondering making muffins or pancakes. Could also mix a few with some stevia sweetener to make a bit of refrigerator jam to enjoy on toast for a couple of mornings.
I may even have to freeze some for later! This is the best they've ever done and I'm very pleased with them and so glad I planted them. The blackberry canes aren't producing nearly as much as I'd hoped this year, but what they ARE producing is very tasty, and I know for a fact that the critters are eating more of those. Maybe they like the blackberries better than the blueberries...
J's sister is here for a short visit and they've gone out to find some food for her. I made pork chops and mashed potatoes but that was hours ago and it's all gone. I don't think she eats pork chops anyway. Some Rosè of Pinot Noir went very nicely with dinner and later I had one single windmill cookie. I could eat a whole BOX of those things but limited myself to one.
Come to think of it, there's still about half the bag of cinnamon almonds left from the renaissance fair, since I only eat 12 almonds at a time and then forget about them for a few days at a time. LOL. Good way to extend enjoyment of that annual treat though.
But enough late night rambling. I think I'm about ready for bed.
Good night!
