Howdy y'all. We've just finished feeding the sugar gliders and now off to bed. The auction and potluck went well. There wasn't much of my pickled beet and onion salad left to bring home, but there was a lot of my spicy black beans and rice. I've just warmed some up for J as he didn't feel like eating at the event, being too stressed out with doing the treasurer stuff for the auction. I put about half of the leftover salad on a small plate for him and a nice serving of the black beans and rice. That should hold him for the night.

    Hi
Another cool morning out during the walk. 1 degree cooler than Yesterday in a nearby town according to News12 a Cable Only NJ channel, They also do a News12 in NY FWIW. I think I have figured out an inexpensive way to rebuild the steps for the side porch. The Grass will need mowing later this week too :(

    Have a Great Tuesday
    Roger
Well, the somewhat spicy black beans and rice (didn't want to kill anyone with spice) are ready and packed to go (holding warm in the oven) and the beet and onion salad is packed to go and still in the fridge. Now to manage transporting a hot dish and a cold dish and keeping them separate for this potluck...

Val, they don't feed the fifth graders??? :open_mouth:

    Hi Ed
That sounds like how my brother does it when he Makes Homemade baked beans with lots of chunks of bacon. He even has a bean pot to cook in the oven for them.

    Cheers
    Roger
It was early Ed!! Yes, they feed 5th graders. Olivia is in the 6th grade, and that's middle school down here, so 'we're all grown up' :)
One more year with Nate, and then..... I guess if I want to eat with the kids, I'll have to take them to dinner!!! :)
Lunch was fun! I think they coached the kids...Nate's first question soon as we sat was, "Grammie, what have you done today?" Just not a Nate sounding question. SO, I countered with 'what have you seen today, or heard today that you thought was funny, or that made you laugh?' He couldn't come up with anything, so I gave him my email addy and told him to watch for something funny and email me!! We also discussed what he liked to eat, and we never got past hamburgers and hot dogs!! I know he eats other things, so only naming those two was funny.

Roger, it was unusually cold this morning, and stayed in the 70's all day...but warmer is on the way. Some weird front stopped in, brought low temps, and low humidity. 60's at night is to my liking, and 70's and low 80's should Mother Nature be asking!!! LOL!! 59/81 predicted for tomorrow. That's more like it!

    See you in the morning...

    Hi Valerie
That sounds similar to our weather forecast for today. 55 or 56 early this morning and in the 80s this afternoon according to the weather forecast.

I bet You are waiting for that email too.

    Cheers

Oh what a fun day this has been! Lunch was wonderful, and then we drank coffee out doors, and then indoors, and I left shortly after her hubby got home from lawyering...and they were going out for birthday dinner!
M and I only chatted for a full 8 hours!!! Next month we are accompanying her hubs to St. Simons where he will be in meetings all day, and we will drink coffee and talk all day!!! Maybe work in a massage or a nap into that busy schedule!

For now, I just finished dinner, cats are fed, and there is nothing between me and bedtime.

    Good Morning, Weather Perfect Wednesday!
Off to a slow start this morning, but soon to be out the door. Its 'shopping' day. Hopeful to find Sobe's, and need usual veg and fruit stuff. And a trip to Whole Foods...need a couple items not available at Publix. Somewhere in there I might need to address a TM, I certainly need to reacquaint myself with a few ST machines!

    Hi Valerie, Ed
I went walking at 5:23Am, 2.75 miles & 3 Cents. It is supposed to be warmer than Yesterday, My Hands still felt cold. I need to remember some light gloves for this type of weather. I also seem to walk faster when I am uncomfortable :)

I was semi cold today as Yesterday I was a bit warm at the end of the walk so today I left off the Sweatshirt :(

    Have a Really Good Wednesday

Howdy y'all. It's thrilling Thursday! I need to get gasoline today, have my emissions checked and I guess go in to see how much trouble it is to change my name on the registration (and title?) too. Then if I have any money left, I guess I can buy a little bit of groceries. If you have a spare half hour you might find this amusing!

    Hi
On my walk this morning I took my $10 backpack with me so I could stop at the Pathmark Supermarket (Grocery Store) and bought Bananas, Some water flavors and a 3 pack of UHT milk as I used up the last of the Dollar Store quart yesterday on my NutriFlakes. FWIW the Dollar store is a much better Unit price per quart.

I did find one whole cent on the walk so not a total loss!

    Have a Nice Thursday
    Roger

P.S. I'm back, I decided to walk to the dollar store before it got to hot, I failed :)
That added 1.1 miles to the days total mileage walked so 2.77 Miles + 1.1 later.

2 degrees warmer this morning, The forecast is for 90 degrees in the warmest areas of NJ, This late September?

    Hi Again
I did remember to break out of the closet a thin long sleeve shirt to wear over my Pocket T shirt today and I think I helped.

I should Vacuum, OTOH I need to get a Plumber in to get an estimate on the Basement bathroom work + a leaky pipe that only seeps when the heat is on. So My agenda is to clean up the basement bathroom instead of vacuuming. It seems that all the dust in the house ends up down there.

    Cheers

    TGIF!! Good Morning!
Today is not going to be the nice quiet day at home. Left Whole Foods yesterday, and when home discovered I did not have 2 of my string bags, and I was missing 3 snack bars, and 2 tomatoes...called. They have them. So, back to Whole Foods, and BB&Beyond has some simple throw rugs on sale, that I want to look at. I have 20% off coupon, so it could be quite a deal. I know this winter I'll be glad to have the rugs to stand on, rather than my new, cold tile!

Since I didn't get the recycles out last week, I have 2 recycle bins this week....looks like I'm one trashy old woman! :) And it would be a dandy day to cut grass, but it really doesn't need it..so I'll hold off til Sunday or Monday? Hmmm.

Roger vacuum?/clean bathroom? hmmmmm! LOL! I'd be happily pushing a vacuum..but I do understand about needing to get a plumber out for a leak. And a crazy leak at that...only when the heats on! Weird! Can't wait to hear the diagnosis on that one! :) Houses do freaky things!

Ed, I hope you're able to enjoy this great weather we're having. ITs 61 on my porch, and nearly 9 oclock! I love it!

Just remembered I have a dryer full of clothes to 'fluff' and fold!..... And the list grows! :)

Howdy y'all. It's fabulous Friday! Never did get the groceries yesterday, but I did get my car emission inspected, J's car emission inspected, and my new sticker for the next year on my license plate. I really SHOULD have done laundry too but never got to that either so I guess I'll wait until Sunday or Monday on that.

I've been up for a while but distracted by all the usuals. Lilo is fed, I'm fed, two large pieces of split, bone in, chicken breast are in the slow cooker, so I guess that counts as nearly half a chicken (on steroids? I swear they are getting these birds as big as small turkeys nowadays) with some salt, pepper, rosemary, thyme and paprika. It's on high so it will be done about 1:30 or 2:00, leaving me plenty of time to debone it, put it on a plate, make a sandwich (maybe) to bring for dinner at work later (six hour closing tonight), etc. And get everything going in the dishwasher (and probably done) before I go to work. Not sure what I'll do with the rest but I'll think of something. Maybe some chicken soup with spaetzle noodles...

With luck, I can squeeze in a short nap with Lilo before work too.

    Hi All
I walked 2.74 miles today, Really nice out again, the same as yesterday. I had one Deer go clattering out of a side road and across the road in front of me and through a yard on its way to the brook. Then a little further on I saw another female with tow of this years crop eating from the lawn in a yard, one of the little ones was around 80% white. I had to look a second time to see what it was.

Then yesterday I saw the blue Heron flying down the brook towards the lake, I usually see it below the lake. Then on my block there was a Woodpecker hanging upside down on a limb pecking away. Not to mention the usual assortment of rodents AKA Squirrels & Rabbits.

I had a Egg Salad Wrap for my mid-morning snack. 1 Egg at 80 calories, 1Tbsp Hellmans Light no fat Mayo @ 30 calories, Mount Olive Sugar Free Sweet Relish @ 0 Calories and 1/2 a large Flatout Original Light Whole Wheat Flatbread at 45 calories per 1/2 piece.

    Have a Good Friday

    Hi Valerie
Can I guess You got the mower back? Not to expensive I hope. I need to pick up gas and do the lawn this weekend too. It is finally starting to look ragged now that we had some rain and it has gone back to being green :)

I cleaned the Bathroom this morning, than I called the Plumber, I had to leave a message, still waiting to hear back.

I understand the leak. A joint that weeps, However Since we have hot water heat it and it is in the heated water path I am pretty sure it leaks when the heat is on and causing expansion. It could be seeping really slow when cold too but so little it dries up as it happens.

It was 56 this morning when I went walking, Nice weather for that.

One time years ago I paid for my Groceries at the A & P and started out the door to the car. The Cashier called me back and asked did I want my groceries :) It happens, I think I was in my 50s then too.

    Cheers

Good Morning, its a cool, crisp Saturday morning in GA!
Laundry going, and that's about it for chores til I get back from Atl today. Noon appt, not even trying to get into midtown, because of the music festival. No parking, streets closed, not up to the challenge! (hassle) :)
Going in Monday and have lunch with Ted, and do a couple chores.

Time to find breakfast and head for the shower.
Hope you all have a good Saturday. I hope to also get to the gym. I don't see nearly as much 'wild life', yet there are some pretty wild creatures there!!!!
Got my groceries...they'd reshelved my 2 tomatoes, and 3 bars...so the gal went to get them, and brought me 3 bars and 3 roma tomatoes. I tried to give her the other one back..she kept saying just keep it....then in the parking lot I found a penny. Danged thing was HOT! So, Roger, next summer watch out for hot money...ouchy!

Howdy y'all. It's sensational Saturday! Working just 4 hours today, from 12:30 to 4:30, so that shouldn't be too bad. I got all the outside stuff watered this morning and still need to do the inside stuff, but that won't take too long. I've been up for quite a while but distracted by the usuals.

I did finally get what groceries I could afford last night. There are still things on the list but nothing is critical so I guess the rest will have to wait until I get paid again.

I did not run into hot change this summer, but then I get out before the heat of day and often before the sun comes up. Does that make me a Early Riser? :)

I have had NutriSystem offer two SS foods to replace a missing Frozen item FWIW.

I do not blame You for not wanting to go where traffic and parking will be a nightmare. Be glad You do not have to work there today.

I got my Little Shopping this week done the easy way. I selected a route that took m past the PathMark Supermarket for the day I needed Bananas and stowed them in the $10 Backpack so I could keep walking easily. Then Yesterday My Brother picked Pears in his travels and Picked up Frozen Vegetables at the ShopRite Supermarket. 99 Cents per 12 ounce Bag, OK price. I eat a Bag a day too.

Howdy y'all. It's scintillating Sunday! Steak and atomic baked beans for breakfast. I cooked the beans all night in a crock pot so they'd be nice and done when I got up and broiled a ribeye steak. And plenty of atomic baked beans left too!

Got the dishes going in the dishwasher and pondering laundry.

    Hi
I went & walked this morning starting at 5:25Am and overachieved doing it, 3.25 miles and 1 cent. The Weather was warmer and more humid than yesterday, Lucky me that there was a breeze to keep it comfortable.

Not to much on my agenda for the day.

I drove past where the Black Walnuts are and there are more on the ground so I think I'll pick up some more. They are a bit of a nuisance to dry, peel and then clean and crack but tasty.

    Have a Great Sunday
    Roger

It sounds like You are using a crock pot to do the same thing my Brother does with a Bean Pot in the oven when he makes his bacony Baked beans.

The last load (of four) is in the dryer now. Had some more of my atomic baked beans and the other ribeye from that same package for dinner. Delicious! Now just waiting for the laundry to get done, to feed the sugar gliders, and take care of the cats and go to bed because I'm opening tomorrow and need to be there by 4:45 a.m. Yikes!

In my opinion, long (very long), slow cooking is the ONLY way to make really good baked beans. I can (and have) done that in the big oven but in my later years have found a crock pot to be easier and it doesn't heat up the whole kitchen.

Either way, of course, the idea is to get it all going and then just LEAVE IT ALONE for 8 to 12 hours. That's my kind of cooking! If in a hurry, one COULD use the HIGH setting and shorten the time but I really think the flavor gets baked in better on LOW for the longer cook time.

Howdy y'all. It's marvelous Monday! Off to the races soon. Bleah.

But since I got all the laundry caught up yesterday, all I have to do today when I get home from work is NAP. Well, maybe I'll get J's laundry from his weekend in Birmingham done, but that shouldn't be much at all. And I can nap while it's washing.

    Hi
I walked this morning and on the way back home I picked up some more of these Black Walnuts, + 4 Cents, Delicious too. They are sitting on the front porch drying right now. Then I mowed the grass, Might be the last time this year :)
These are examples of what I picked up and how they look after having the outer skin removed and then cracked. That stump they are sitting on in the first picture is a perfect place to crack the nuts. A Nutcracker is not really going to work either.

    Hi Ed
I sort of wish my brother would use a Crock Pot. It would have to be cheaper than running the Electric Oven. We have a strange in some ways kitchen, Gas Cook top and Electric Oven. OTOH we could still cook on the stove when the power was out for days after Sandy hit.

    Have a Good Day

    Hey guys..its is Monday.
I've had lunch in town with Ted, and ducked into a couple store for things I can't find out here.
No gym, but got my steps in anyway!

Careful with those walnuts Roger. I grew up with them in Mo...and then had friends in VA who had a long country drive lined with black walnuts, and they didn't care for them...so one fall we were visiting, and picked up several large paper sacks of them.....well, they need to dry, as you well know, and then you have to get those green turned black 'peels' off. Made a board with holes and thought the kids would like hammering them thru the board....wrong! In the process of drying them my hubs put a big bunch in the wheel barrow, and wheeled them into the sun in the back yard. I was washing dishes and watching out the window...squirrel was coming, hoping up on the wheel barrow, choosing a nut (apparently not ALL of them were to its liking) and then it would gnaw off that green shell like you'd cut off an apple skin with a knife. After watching this happen several time, I called to hubs and told him what was happening. So, being 'fair' to the squirrel, he set a bakers dozen on the ground, and returned the barrow to the shed.....have you ever seen a squirrel throw a tantrum??? That little tree rat came back and he hopped around, then stood on his hind legs, squawking at the top of his lungs, twitching his tail, stomping his feet...it was hilarious to watch. One really mad squirrel. All fall and winter as the kids and I walked around Marlton, NJ, I'd see a walnut here, and one over there, etc. He did a lousy job of 'hiding' his stash!!

AND in NJ I had that weird kitchen stove!! I loved it. They should all be made that way. Cooking with gas gives you instant control of what you're cooking. And that electric oven is best for even oven temps, browning, broiling etc. I'd never seen one before we moved into that house, and have never even seen or talked to anyone who knew of the gas/electric range....until today!!!! Enjoy it. It may be weird, but cooking/baking never gets any better than that combo.

Ed...I have laundry that is washed and dried, but needs folding, since you're in the swing..wanna have a few more 'pieces'???
Yesterday, somewhere, I ran across an article on why using the crock over night makes a lot of sense! I think there's a great idea there. I'd love to wake in the morning to a cooked pot of beans, or whatever... sounds like a win/win to me!

I'm tired, and I think my dinner has settled, so sleep in soon to follow. See you in the morning. Tomorrow I only have to get myself to O's gymnastics!

    Later...

All the laundry is done, and I got my nap in too! J and I both had a rather British breakfast for dinner. Baked beans and other breakfast foods with the beans. Not sure if very many Brits would have beans that could melt your face, but we liked them. Quite spicy hot, but also loaded with flavor. And there is STILL some left, even though I've been eating on them for several days now. I figured I might as well make a big pot if I was going to do it.

I've read of more regular "breakfast" things that can be done overnight in the crockpot but I, personally, can eat any food for any meal and a pot of beans (baked or otherwise) is fine with me as part (or all) of my nutritious breakfast. I've read of cooking pin oats or even some egg type casserole dishes overnight. I have to wonder about the casseroles with eggs though, as I'd think they'd get rubbery...

However, Val, since you don't eat eggs, that wouldn't be a problem! Poke around online and I'm sure you can find all sorts of things you can crockpot all night and have a nice, hot breakfast waiting for you.

Howdy y'all. It's terrific Tuesday! Cloudy today but only 77 degrees! 20% chance of rain. Working that long middle, 10:30 to 6:30 so need to get hopping.

    Hi
I went walking and found no money but I did save 64 cents by reusing the coffee cup from the Quick Chek, and 2.9 miles.

    Cheers

Hi Valerie
I do know they are fattening. I was lazy last year and bought a bag of the black walnuts in the store and used the nutritional info from the bag to eat them on plan for NutriSystem. my first experience with black walnuts was at my grandparents back in the 50s.

That is my feeling that a gas stove is best for control when cooking.

I would love to find a reasonably priced Multifuel generator that can run on bottled gas or gasoline from the gas station or since it can be stored a long time safely and still burn a diesel generator in case of future power outages. I have seen both just not at what I considered a decent price :)

    Have a Great Day

Ed, I've done steel cut oats. One of the first things that O and I 'cooked' together. She was a little thing, and I let her stir the crock with a big wooden spoon to 'help Grammie'. And the smell in the morning was fabulous! You should have seen that little bit eat!!! :)
I think the main thrust of the article I read was really for people trying to get littles off to school, get ready for work, etc..and finding that hassle enough without trying to prep ingredients, sauté onions, etc. also. I just thought that you, like me, eats anything anytime of day without being 'hindered' by foods associated with Breakfast lunch and dinner might like the idea. Tonite I'm putting on a crock of black beans, with some neat seasonings, and yes, I very well may eat beans for breakfast!!

Good Morning its Tuesday, and really dark outside...I think I'm gonna get my 20% rain, soonly!!!
It was hard getting out of bed this morning! Because it was so dark my eyes called my brain 'liar' and other assorted names!!

Olivia has gymnastics tonite, and I am planning to go. I have 'things' to deliver to them as well. One of the things I picked up at the variety store (Richards) yesterday was a couple back scratchers. For no known reason we were talking about them last time I was out baby sitting, and Jenn showed me theirs...the Golden Retriever had gotten it, and it now only has ONE 'finger'! Funniest looking thing, so I got another for me, and a new one for them..(big spender here, they were $1.50!, and Ted sent 2 little collectable Mind Craft (one or two words?) toys, and I found an unused insulin needle behind a desk when I was 'tidying', I need for Jenn to dispose of it in Olivia's 'needle container'. Etc!!! I should do another round or two of 'tidying', books are next and I just know I can find a few they need!!! LOL!!

Roger hope you're having or have had a good walk. (and made a profit at it too) :) I think you were the one that said you probably only had one more lawn mowing this year...kinda made me jealous. Me and that mower will be cutting grass or mulching leaves for MONTHS to come. Usually until about early Dec. before mine is done, only to be pulled out again in Feb. to cut down the old leaves of the 'monkey grass'...so short 'rest' for mowers in GA.

I am hungry, all this food talk, so I'll check in later if I don't get trapped under a pile of rebellious books!

If I'd have thought to put some beans on to soak this morning, I could have put them on overnight cook mode, but since I didn't, I'm soaking them overnight and will cook them while I'm at work tomorrow and dinner will be pretty much ready when I get home! I put a nice batch of great northern beans in to soak and they will be delicious tomorrow night after crock potting all day.

Beans are a diabetic's best friend.

Tonight we finished off the last of the atomic baked beans. So good! And yes, I'm doing a lot of beans lately. They're inexpensive, and nutritious and I'll do them until J starts complaining. LOL!

Dishes are in the dishwasher and it's running. D has a friend over for the night (on his way to DC and just stopping here for the night) and they've gone out to dinner. J is in the other room and I think I'll join him shortly. In a while, the sugar gliders need food and then shortly after that it's bedtime.————————————————————————————————————————————————-

    Howdy y'all. It's wonderful Wednesday!

I've been up for quite some time. I have the great northern beans going now in the crockpot. By the time I get home from work this evening, they should be delicious! As J prefers his great northern beans cooked with JUST salt, I set them up that way, but I'll be adding more spice to mine at the table. I really prefer to cook them with the spices, and with ham or smoked salt pork (won't because J is vegetarian) but I'll make that adjustment for J. Oddly, it's ONLY with the great northern beans that he prefers the "salt only" preparation. I think it's because he grew up with them prepared that way, and his mother didn't prepare other beans much at all. I can do what I like with other beans and he's fine with that. He claims to not care for pinto beans, but when I make them my way (except for lack of meat) he likes them!

I'll probably pick up some greens or kale at work to have with my beans.

Well got to get ready for a 7 hour middle today.
