Started looking around for heart healthy burgers or freeze dried burgers and found this: http://www.campingsurvival.com/future-essentials-freeze-dried-hamburger-ground-beef-patties.html

Says you have to soak for 20 minutes. That's a LOT longer than the NS burgers need to be soaked.

Apparently this is also military surplus but made as recently as last year.

The quesadillas sound great, as do the strawberries.

Breakfast of the Kellogg's Special K with strawberries with much needed coffee!!

I wish these ads would quit trying to sell me a Toyota. I have no interest in one right now.

This was posted by John Tesh on Facebook/ (I knew there was a reason I liked oatmeal.)

Start the day in a great mood – by eating a bowl of oatmeal!
First, because it’s warm – and warm foods and beverages instantly make us feel comforted and cared for. In fact, Yale researchers found that people are more likely to view us as generous and caring if we hand them a warm beverage.
Plus, oatmeal’s loaded with tryptophan – an essential building block of the mood-boosting chemical, serotonin. And oatmeal’s low in protein – which is key because protein blocks tryptophan from entering the brain.
The result? A new study found that oatmeal delivers a bigger mood boost in the morning than any other breakfast food. And the effects last for hours.

Funny story about messages in Spanish. When DH and I were newly weds, back in the 80's, I called him one day to tell him I was working late. He was away from his desk but someone answered the phone and agreed to take a message, so I said "Just tell him his wife called and he needs to call me back." So the afternoon went by and DH never called me back. When I got home that night I asked him why he didn't call me back and he said he never got a message from me. He went on to say "I spent all afternoon trying to find a phone number for someone named Sue Esposa, but that's the only phone message I got today". In Spanish, su esposa means "your wife". Apparently, his buddy who took the message took for granted that someone who grew up in El Paso, Texas would know this!

    Pam - that's a hoot!

Jean - just more evidence that your breakfast choice is the true breakfast of champions!

Pam--That is so funny! Never take anything for granted.

Maryanne--I don't know that it is the breakfast of champions but I couldn't resist zeroing in on it.

Midnight was restless last night and kept waking me up. He is now napping and I am sleepy after getting up at 5:30am to put out the trash.

When I went to the bathroom around 2:30 a.m. Jack came over and talked and talked and kept trying to get me to the kitchen. Even though there's dry cat food all over the house, apparently he was starving to death! Well, right now he gets whatever he wants because I'm so happy his test results came back good!

Maryanne--Jack and you both have a reason to be happy. I wouldn't mind if Midnight would talk but he likes to get my attention sometimes by attacking my ankles. Then he will walk up and look me in the face to see if I'm getting the message. I can understand his doing it once a night as is the norm but last night it was about every two hours. I wondered if he was feeling bad or something.

I had lunch with a friend at a waterside cafe. Her son is the manager. He sent over clam chowder and a small clam cake. You to both. We had lobster rolls and I left half the roll to semi make up for the gifts. It was such a beautiful. relaxing day. Tomorrow is the tooth extraction and the start of the dental implant. Send up a prayer please on my behalf that all goes well. I'm hoping I have the bone structure to support the implant without a graft.

Helene - sending "good implants" thoughts you're way.

DH is getting a crown today and Monday they are starting to work on another tooth that they think has an infection. His dentist is getting a hip replacement and thinks he'll be back at work in 2 weeks. I'm dubious. I hope DH has no dental emergencies arising from this work that the dentist is rushing to get done before his surgery because I can't believe he'll be back in 2 weeks.

Helene--We are all hoping the extraction and start of the implant process goes well. You are fortunate not to need a graft.

Maryanne--I do hope all goes well with your DH's dental work. I think the dentist is overly optimistic about his return time after surgery.

I've been going through accumulated papers that were kept for one reason or another. I've spent an hour on that; now, I need to focus on another task as this is getting old.

As it turned out, I did need the graft so I can't have the implant for several months while the healing process takes place and the graft strengthens my bone. The good news was the dentist felt I'm a good candidate for the implant. The bad news was the old tooth didn't come out easily. It took 20 minutes to get the old crown off. This was followed by 40 minutes of pulling, prying and drilling to get the remains of the tooth out. It came out in bits and pieces. I had no pain from that but my opposite jaw was killing me trying to keep my mouth open. He had to rest his hand on that side of my mouth which also hurt. He took frequent mini breaks so I could close my jaw. I ended up with a headache from the pressure on my face and jaw. I'm on antibiotics and OTC pain relievers. I'm doing well and he couldn't have been nicer. And he assured me this was the worst part of the procedure so the actual implant should be a breeze.

Helene, you're braver than I was. When I had my teeth pulled and bone grafted, I opted for anesthesia. I did not want to be awake for the procedure and I'm glad I did it that way. I know you hoped to avoid the bone graft, but in the end you will be better off for having it as your implant will "take" better and be more stable. You certainly wouldn't want to do that twice! It is a nuisance that it takes longer, but the end result is what's important.

DH is driving from El Paso with his mom today. They were supposed to make the drive yesterday, but had to postpone their departure because her assisted living facility had failed to obtain a full supply of her medications, as they were supposed to do. Initially, they were told that they would get an emergency delivery of them by noon so their plan was to leave after receiving it and drive halfway, spending the night in a hotel then driving the rest of the way today. Apparently, something went awry with that plan, because they didn't leave until this morning. For some reason DH can't get good cell reception, so I haven't been able to talk to him. I've gotten a couple of texts and voicemails, so I don't really know what the full story is. I've enjoyed my peace and quiet for the past two days, but I'm sure DH is frustrated.

Pam...You're 100% right about the graft being the best decision. Like you, I only want to go through this once. The graft gives me the best chance for success. I hope the trip for DH and MIL isn't too bad and they get to your house safe and sound.

Helene--Sounds like a major challenge to go through but if the graft increases your chance of success then it is the way to go. Here's to a successful recovery!

Helene - you've braver than me also. My dentist knows the deal - he can do anything he want as long as I'm on nitrous oxide. No gas, no dental work.

Pam - I'm sure you'll get the whole story eventually. I know what you mean about enjoying the peace and quiet. Now that DH only works Monday and Tuesday those are my two new favorite days.

The endocrinologist did the thyroid biopsy yesterday. Having just been through Jack having a fine needle aspirate and then, when that wasn't conclusive, having a biopsy I asked her which she was doing . Her response was "fine needle aspirate biopsy". Well, okay, then...... She's on vacation next week so a colleague will be notifying folks. Great, can't wait to trade voice mails with a doctor who's even more harried than usual since his colleague is on vacation. Then it occurred to me I can maybe get the results on their "portal". Can't remember if I signed up for this group's "portal". I was fine with the Hopkins one and then got sort of frustrated when I realized everyone has their own. Just more web site and passwords. Geesh.....

My sister and her husband have closed on their new home in Sedona so she's moving across the country. It's a shame. I think if fate had put us in the same place we could have really had fun together. Now that we're older we get along great. But it wasn't to be I guess. Of course DH can't understand why they'd want to move into the drought but they aren't stupid so hopefully they've thought about all this.

Maryanne--those portals are great but you are right about the passwords. Sorry family is moving far away. Skype time, but I haven't used it.

My day has been boring highlighted by sudden need to continue sitting on toilet.

I've had a little discomfort in my haw. I've probably spread the OTC pain relievers out longer than every three hours. It's not on purpose but you know how easy it is to lose track of time when you're busy. I'm being more careful now so hopefully I keep the discomfort to a minimum. My day has been otherwise uneventful.

I think cherry tomatoes in a frying pan cook down to sauce better than the roasting experiment. None of these ideas of DH to cook with cherry tomatoes is very diet friendly. Since the mozzarella/tomato thingie we've had pizza and spaghetti.

Escaped "Mayberry" today and went to the city to have lunch with a friend at the Outback. I am stuffed but the tilapia with crabmeat was excellent. Won't have to eat much for dinner.

Today is DH's birthday, so I'm roasting pork tenderloin with a cherry almond sauce, roast new potatoes, salad and rolls. I was going to make him a chocolate cake, but I had made a Butterfinger pie for his mom and we still have half of it left, so he said no need to make a cake as well. I would have preferred the cake since I'm not too fond of Butterfingers, but it was nice not to add baking a cake to my to do list today. Helping to care for his mom is already adding items to that list, although she isn't too demanding as long as she gets her pain pills when she wants them. Mostly she stays in bed and sleeps. If all goes as planned, she and DH will leave for Houston on Tuesday or possibly Wednesday.

Trying to get motivated, but I did start the day with the Quaker Weight Control oatmeal. It definitely is more satisfying than my other breakfast selections.

Pam--A great menu for DH's birthday. I guess you can have the cake at a later time, but the Butterfinger pie does sound good.

Pam..birthday sounds nice. Was MIL able to join you? How far is Houston from you? I hope the trip is smooth and that MIL has an easy adjustment to the new living situation.
Jean...Your Sunday sounded nice. We no longer have an Outback. They closed the loval one and a Mexican restaurant is in there now.
Maryanne...How are the cherry tomatoes holding up? Are you still picking large amounts?

The tomatoes just keep on coming. My lunches are mostly a large bowl of cherry tomatoes.

Interestingly the regular size red tomatoes this year are "off".

Whatever the weather effect this year it's favorable to cherry tomatoes, not so favorable to large tomatoes.

Yes, MIL joined us for dinner last night. She usually gets up for a few hours in the late afternoon and stays up until ready for bed. We ran into a snag in the plan to get her admitted to her new assisted living home that required some last minute scrambling, but we think we've got it worked out now. It will mean a one day delay in her admission and staying here an additional day, but that's not a problem for us.

I think all but one of the Outbacks in our area have closed as well. But we have so many restaurants that I haven't missed it.

Our Outback in the city was one of those picked to participate in the experiment a few years ago to see how well it would work if they opened in time for lunch. It was an overwhelming success. It really bugs me when I go to an area in which they are only open for dinner and afterwards. They are missing out on business lunches and the business of people who would like to eat there but not stay late for dinner. Ours has won several awards; the food and service is fabulous and it is always packed.

From the NS Facebook posting that showed up in my news feed:

Thought oatmeal was just for cold winter days? Think again! This Summer Days Maple Brown Sugar Oatmeal combines the Nutrisystem® Maple Brown Sugar Oatmeal with frozen strawberries, yogurt and sugar-free syrup to make a cool breakfast treat perfect for hot summer days. Helpful hint: Prepare this recipe at night, and wake up to a delicious dish just waiting to be enjoyed!

    2. Add ¼ cup plain, fat-free yogurt, ½ cup of chopped frozen strawberries and 1 Tbsp. sugar-free syrup and mix.

This recipe makes 1 serving and counts as 1 Breakfast, 1 Limited Extra and 1/2 a SmartCarb on Nutrisystem. Helpful hint: Add a half cup of blueberries to round that SmartCarb up to 1!

I have frozen strawberries from the abundant crop this spring. Stupid question #89 - do you cook the oatmeal (I'm such a cook - NOT)?
