Time flies, and we are now in the final stretch of 2016. Some of us may have started the year with resolutions or goals. Some of us may have had varying degrees of success. Life does intervene with its surprises, but this does not mean that we give up our goal to live a healthier life, however we choose to measure that goal.

We can do this! We can end 2016 with improvement in our lifestyle, healthier eating, and possiblw weight loss.

This quarter has to be better than the last one for me. DH having surprise heart surgery really knocked my resolutions right out the window. Now that he's home and doing well, I feel some of the stress level easing. I'm in a better frame of mind to see if I can make some progress. I think we all have the same hopes for these next few months.

    The pandas are so cute!!

I know I'm working 3 days straight this week, one of which was today. Friday, I get to go see the back surgeon for interpretation of all those tests. I don't anticipate any procedure.

I got an email on a special on NS frozen food a la carte. Free shipping with $50.

I got a lot done yesterday in the paperwork pile. Hopefully I'll make some more progress today. Tomorrow I take Tuffy to the cardiologist and Thursday I take Indy to the eye doctor. Busy week!

My absentee ballot came yesterday. That seems really early but I'll take it - no waiting in lines this year!

Apparently there's more rain on the way from the latest hurricane. I've got to do something about getting a tarp at the one colony. We're feeding under a wood pile that obviously hasn't been touched in years so hopefully no one will mind if I throw a tarp or two over it. Saw a cat today I don't think I've seen before. Lil's going to check with Sharon. I hope it's not a new one- it's a dilute calico so obviously a female. I want to be gradually reducing the number of cats; not adding to them!

Lil suddenly has one in her yard. She'd love to ignore it but doesn't have it in her. So that may be the next project.

Meanwhile work is quite busy so never a dull moment.

DH hasn't been feeling well so he's getting quite picky about dinners. I'm guessing it's his diverticulitis and hope he gets over it soon.

Maryanne--Your love of cats abounds; they are lucky to have you in their corner. One cat is challenging enough for me.

The usual quaker weight control oatmeal for breakfast and then off to work.

I'm off to Annapolis to take Tuffy to the cardiologist.

I just saw a poll of governors on CNN. Ours is #2 in popularity. I suspect that's because no one pays any attention to him. I think I've heard one thing about him since he's been in office. He stirred up a controversy by ordering that schools not open until after Labor Day. Other than that he's been thankfully silent as far as I know. Of course I never listen to local news.

We went out to dinner with friends to celebrate my birthday yesterday. It was Dh's first outing since his surgery. We had fun and it was nice for him to get out. He was tired when we got home but bounced back with a good night's sleep. He even walked a little further down our street tody for PT. Maryanne..How's your husband feeling today?

Helene - I'm glad you two were able to get out.

DH seems to be feeling better, at least with the recent symptoms.

Tuffy was terrible at the cardiologist today but he got a good report!! He weighs 18 pounds so I guess I'm not the only one who needs a diet.

We're very pleased with the lady who wanted to foster. She took Cheeto, has him on a diet, and is buying toys to get him playing. I doubt she'll ever give him up but he's certainly going to be healthier!

DH got discharged from PT yesterday. The therapist says he's doing great and just has to keep up the walking routine they came up with on his own. He'll probably be done with the nurse next week. We have a friend who was in the hospital and then rehab almost at the same time as DH. She was in the other hospital 2 towns away from DH so I never got to visit there. I saw her once in rehab but most of my time was tied up with visists to DH. She's home now and we stopped for a short visit at her home. She was thrilled to see him looking so good. She said it made her day. She looked very tired as DH did when he first got home. I'm hoping seeing how well he's doing will inspir her. They have the same therapist and he was just leaving her house when we arrived.

Maryanne--Glad DH is doing better. Wow! 18 pounds for Tuffy! That is one big cat!

Helene--It is great that DH has graduated from PT, and will keep up with the walking routine.

I see the Orthopedic back surgeon tomorrow to get all the test results. I don't expect anything dramatic. I didn't sleep last night from the pins and needles from lower back to feet, etc.

Yesterday, I went to the orthopedic back surgeon to get the results of all the tests. Basically, I don't have a slipped disc. Instead, I have a vertebrae which has slipped out of line in the spinal column. There is a fancy name for the condition but basically, I am faced with having physical therapy for it and if that doesn't work, then surgery might be necessary to get it to behave This is a video that explains it as well as the symptoms, etc., most of which I have.

I'm celebrating my birthday today, mostly alone, lol! DH had a friend who invited him to spend the day flying in his open-cockpit biplane which he was thrilled to do. He did ask me first and I gave my blessing. Tonight he's attending a wedding for a friend's daughter, and I opted out of that as well. I have never met the bride and barely know the parents, so I just didn't want to spend my birthday with a bunch of strangers.

Jean, I hope the PT will resolve your issues. I have been diagnosed with bulging discs in my lumbar region and several years ago when I was having a lot of pain with it, PT was the only thing that helped. I learned several stretches and strengthening exercises that I could do on my own, and it was very helpful. I really need to start doing them again as I am having back issues again.

My ankle is healing well from the last surgery. I go back to the doctor on Tuesday morning and hopefully will be at the end of this long journey at that point.

Helene, I'm so happy that your DH is doing so well. When will y'all start preparing for your return to Florida?

Hello to Maryanne. I'm sure you are staying busy with work and feeding the colonies. I hope your DH is feeling better.

Pam--Happy Birthday! I completely understand your reasoning behind not wanting to spend that time with strangers; you gave yourself the gift of spending your day the way you want. Great news that your ankle is healing well and hopefully the doctor will officially release you.

Helene - sounds like your DH is doing great! Is the storm in Florida doing any damage to where you go?

Pam - enjoy your birthday! Somehow they are never as big a deal at this age. I'm glad your ankle is healing well.

Jean - best of luck with the PT. Here's hoping it helps.

I got a lot done the last couple days but am not feeling the most motivated today. It's chilly and windy here suddenly. Hopefully the outside cats are growing their winter coats. I hate having to pull out a jacket but I guess it's that time!!!

Maryanne--Yes, it is getting to be that time. I turned on the heat this morning as it was so cold when I got up. You might need to fix some of those styrofoam shelters with straw, etc. for the outside cats if it gets really bad. Midnight doesn't know how good he has it.

I told Lil when I took over feeding the colonies most days that doing the shelters each fall was still going to be her responsibility. She and her husband are younger than us and have a teenage son to help. I said I'd foot the cost but o/w it's her task. LOL!

Our guys don't know how good they have it either. They have plenty of heated beds as well as heating vents. Unfortunately their mother is always warm so I do try to keep the heat down. DH and I turn it up and down all the time.

I just ordered canned vegetables on Amazon. Almost can't believe I did it. None of the grocery stores left around here have canned italian green beans so I ordered a case. I guess people aren't eating canned vegetables so much - that section of the stores is shrinking.

I have to watch canned veggie because of the sodium count. I can do fresh or frozen though. Maybe that's why people are suing less canned. Now that I'm reading for sodium count, I'm shocked at the items that have 7-- tp 100 mg per serving. With companies cutting out dies and sweeteners, they need to look at sodium content as well.

Maryanne--I used to eat Italian green beans but haven't looked for them in a long time. I tend to buy veggies in a steamer bag.

Helene--100mg a serving is low compared to the sodium often found in dressings or in salads at restaurants. I try to aim for no more than 1800mg of sodium a day, but national is 2300mg.

I went for the checkup today in which they just numb it enough via a topical anesthesia so that you don't feel pain from the scope. Guess what! He found a small tumor and asked how I felt about going ahead and taking care of it versus coming back and doing it under twilight anesthesia. I told him to go ahead. Did I feel it? Oh, yes! Every little snip and then the cauterization. On the other hand, I have had prolonged leg and back pain that was worse. The nurses said most people chose to come back. I just wanted to get it over with.

Wow, Jean, you are tough but I'm so glad it was small and they could take care of it.

I was having trouble with my computer yesterday. I didn't notice the zero wasn't work before I hit post. Then I couldn't get back in to edit. What I was saying that canned goods often have 700-1000 MG sodium in a single serving. I think that's why people are going more for fresh or frozen veggies. with all the companies cutting dyes, additives, sweeteners, etc, you'd think they'd reduce sodium too. I'm more aware of it with DH's heart condition. I found a Progresso chicken stock which has 95 mg sodium. Most of the ones that say sodium reduced have at least 500 mg which I don't consider much of a reduction. I like to make my own soups so I was glad to find at least one brand that I find acceptable.

Jean..Considering how far you have to go to these doctors, I would have made the same choice. Plus once they say tumor, I'd want it out ASAP. I hope you're feeling better today. The ride home must have been uncomfortable to say the least.

I love the fresh vegetables in the bags that you steam but DH doesn't so I mix it up! And of course I'm totally ignoring that those bags are supposed to be bad for you (my best friend won't touch them). I start to wonder if there is anything that isn't bad for you.

Helene - of course I understand you need to be very cognizant of sodium. I'm glad you are finding a few things that work.

While Jessicat was at the oncologist yesterday I had breakfast at Bob Evans. A few weeks ago I had breakfast at a diner. All I can say is that making my own eggs has totally spoiled me for breakfast out which I used to love. Throwing two eggs in a pan and scrambling them now seems very bland to me.

Jessie got a good report as did the cat we took to the cardiologist a little later. I'm spending a lot of time at that place this week. I got back tomorrow with Indy.

I got my stitches out yesterday. I still have some really ugly scabs and I think the scarring won't be pretty, but at least I'm nearing the end of the tunnel and I can see the light at last!

Jean, I agree with Helene. I would have also said let's get it done now. Having to go back at a later date would have just raised your anxiety level.

High sodium levels and the amount of hidden sugar in foods make it more and more attractive to prepare your own foods so you can control those ingredients. We still eat too much prepared and convenience items, but I do try to cook from scratch at least 2-3 times a week, and have leftovers quite often.

Pam - I'm glad to hear everything is moving forward!

I'm about ready to throw the Halloween weekend cat show people overboard. They are giving us such a hard time. I suspect we won't be doing this one again but who knows - maybe all the hassle will be worth it. (It could happen.)

I had my first physical therapy session today at First Settlement Physical Therapy. This person doesn't exercise that much any more so an hour of exercising certain muscles really hit me by the time I got home. I was exhausted so I decided to rest in bed. I then climbed out to eat dinner at which time I checked the caller id and spotted a call from Camden Clark Medical.

When I checked the voice mail, it was Dr. Mendoza's office asking me to call them. I have a feeling that the little "tumor" removed Monday was not a friendly one and that the cancer had returned. I'm trying to be positive as I can't change anything....but to find a heating pad and put on my now aching back from the exercise. Oh yes, I have a current homework assignment: suck in the stomach to help strengthen the core muscles.
