4th Quarter of 2016: Ending the Year with a Loss~~We Can Do This!!

I took Sammy to the vet this morning. His first trip as a Dubbs cat. He surprised the heck out of me by being a purrfect gentlecat. Didn't even race back into the carrier. Just stayed out and schmoozed.
My earthlink email has been down all day. Scary. I keep thinking "what would I do if they suddenly went out of business"? I have probably 20 years of emails on there, along with people's email addresses.0 -
At the very list, you should probably have a way to save the emails. I haven' seen ads for them in years and didn't realize they were still in business. It would be terrible for you to lose all that since part of it is your business.I'm techno phobic so I wouldn't a clue how to transfer the information. But I'm sure it can be done. Do you know any Geeks?0

I'm still around; just have been so busy and so tired that I keep forgetting to check in. I guess I have to take time to go back and read all the posts. You have been very busy!
I'll not need back surgery at this point; the PT seems to be working. I don't know how much longer this will last. All I know is that with the news of super cold and possible snow that I am not crazy about driving to PT appointments over 50 miles of crooked roads. Did I mention that I dislike Winter?0 -
Jean..If you delay the PT visits for weather reasons, can you continue into the new year or will you lose the visits? I hope they carry over so you don't have to risk traveling on icy roads.
The only things on my must do list are a visit to the chiropractor and then driving my friend to a doctor's appointment. I think I mentioned she lost her license after a small accident. The police officer made an assumption based on her age and had her license suspended. It's been a nightmare trying to get it back, She has a completely clean driving record other than this accident. She needed medical clearance and had difficulty getting any of her doctors to fill out the form. I guess everyone is afraid of being sued. After multiple visits to the DMV, she finally got all the correct paperwork in. One of her doctors actually had the nerve to say he couldn't do the form because he'd never driven with her. Ridiculous! She has to take a road test so all he'd be certifying was she had no medical conditions to prevent her from driving. DH and I have been driving her to appointments and to get groceries for about a month. Spme weeks it felt like I was driving her almost every day but I wouldn't say no. Mass transportation is very rare here. She could make an appointment with the senior van but they drop people at the doctor and it could be hours before they pick you again. They have to balance many peoples' schedules but it's hard for an older person to have to spend 3-4 hours waiting to be taken home. Now she just has to wait for a packet in the mail with instructions on making the driving exam appointment. She's going on a family cruise the end of the week and I'm sure she'll have a more relaxing vacation She's not nervous about the road test but the medical part was a nightmare. I hope none of us ever have to go through that.0 -
I got my nails done today and chose a sparkly red polish on most fingers and silver sparkles all over my ring fingers. I really like it and hope I'm not tired of it before I go back in three weeks.
Tomorrow is my PT assessment. I'm hoping to get several sessions in before the end of the year, but may be limited by their scheduling. I'm probably not the only patient wanting to get in as many sessions as possible before having to pay their deductibles again.
Helene, that's a shame your friend has had to jump through so many hoops to attempt to get her license back. Shame on her doctor for being so unhelpful.
Jean, I'm glad the PT is helping you enough to avoid back surgery! I'm sure it would be even more helpful if you didn't have to drive so far for each treatment.
A friend gave me a coupon code for a free box of Hello Fresh meals, so DH and I have been trying those out this week. So far, I'm not impressed. We got three meals and if we had paid for them, it would have cost $69.00. Last night the meal was chicken breasts that I butterflied, then seasoned with salt and pepper and Italian seasoning and sautéed in olive oil. The meal also included orzo pasta, and zucchini and a Roma tomato that I sliced, then tossed in olive oil, Italian seasoning, and salt pepper, then roasted. The last five minutes I sprinkled Panko bread crumbs, shredded Parmesan cheese, and cubed mozzarella cheese over the veggies and then put them under the broiler. It was all very good, but by the time I was done cooking DH said it looked like a bomb had gone off in the kitchen! Lots of dishes and tools to complete the meal. Tonight's meal was a bit simpler, with a sirloin steak that I sautéed in olive oil, then prepared a sauce in the pan with the drippings from the steak. The veggies tonight were sweet potatoes and green beans that were roasted while the steak was cooking. No bomb explosion tonight, lol! The meal kits include everything needed except for things like olive oil, salt and pepper, butter, etc., which it's assumed you will have in your pantry. For the price, I'm a little disappointed at the amount of prep that is required, but I suppose that is good for those people who are learning to cook. Personally, I just want to get it done with as little mess and effort as possible. I already know how to cook, so I'm happy to let someone else do the boring prep work. We have one more meal for tomorrow night that I think has a good deal of prep work, but I'll try to keep the mess down to a minimum if I can. Anyway, if any of you were thinking about trying one of these services out, that's my take on it. We have chosen not to continue the subscription beyond this one box. For the cost, we just didn't feel it was better than we could do on our own since we have an abundance of grocery stores all around us.0 -
Helene - that is really rough on your friend. I've never (once) in my life parallel parked so I might have a tough time with a driving test. Maybe I could take it in a rented Smart car. LOL!
Jean - glad the PT is helping but 50 miles? Wow, that's how far I travel for Jack's internist and I don't do it often.
Pam - I've looked at those kits and the ads make it look so simple. Always suspected that wasn't the case.
I've cancelled our participation in a flea market Saturday as we are supposed to have nasty weather and I get further and further behind on Christmas/my work/etc. Still bah humbugging it here.
Just got my annual shipment of Beecher's World's Best Mac n Cheese. I ordered ir directly from Beecher's this year (instead of Norm Thompson). Shipping materials were strange. Foam padding inside a cardboard box with two ice packs. Think I'll go back to Norm Thompson in the future.
Tomorrow morning I pick up Indy early and take her to the eye doctor. DH says he's seeing weather issues but the weather channel and accuweather have at most flurries. She needs to get her stitches out so only a real blizzard would keep me from trying.

I don't think we'll get snow but predictions are for really bitter cold. It's only supposed to be here 2 days and I hope they are right. We're getting reports on how quickly frostbite happens. I'm pretty much planning to hunker down at home until the cold goes. I do have a massage tomorrow but after that, I'm staying home. Good luck with your trip to the doctor with Jack. I can sympathize with jack about the stitches. The ones in my gum are supposed to dissolve. For some reason, I thought they'd be gone in a week. Wrong! I forgot to ask the dentist how long. When I had this procedure last year, it seemed like they were gone fairly soon. I Googled it and it could be a few weeks to a couple of months. I can feel them pulling a bit so it's kind of annoying. I suppose things could be worse. I've been able to stop the Ibuprofen. So I'm making progress but it's slow.0

Good morning, everyone! We currently have a wind chill temp of zero. I so dislike Winter. I see that the real temp is expected to rise to a balmy 14 when I drive the 50 miles to PT. I actually don't mind the drive if the road conditions are acceptable. I was approved for up to 3 sessions a week but I only do two so that makes it about 200 miles a week. I could have done it locally but they had lost staff and could not take any new appointments in time for me to have enough done before the back surgeon's appointment. Also, I had a prior experience with this local place which was not good. I really like the current place.
Helene--I do hope the stitches dissolve soon. Also, your weather is also providing a good excuse to stay put. Don't you love those helpful warnings about the dangers of going out in the cold? We don't have easy transportation service here. Like you said, there is a senior citizen van that makes a trip to the city once a week or locally every day. Most people have to rely upon family members or friends if they cannot drive
Pam--I had a friend who got a gift coupon or something for a shipment of one of those home delivery and prepare meals. He said he had to buy some add ons that he guessed they assumed you automatically kept on hand. He said it ended up costing more than if he had gone to the grocery store and bought the type of food he liked and prepared it.
Maryanne--50 miles? We consider that to be in the "neighborhood." If we want something beyond the ordinary, it requires going to the city. We have one adjoining county that has no supermarkets or groceries left. They can buy some incidentals at a gas/convenience store but they have to drive a similar distance for everything including food. We just get used to it and plan to do as much as possible in that trip. I normally make the 50 miles one way trip about once a week; now, it is twice with the PT. If I go to the other side of the city, it is more like 60 miles one way.
I had one of those Special K breakfast sandwiches for the start to the day. I see that it is currently 66 degrees in my room where I am now. It should be about time for the heat to kick on again. Do I train myself to exist in these temps or do I raise the thermostat? I got the notice from Social Security about my "big" cost of living increase. The net is exactly the same as last year. I also got the notices that the cost of electricity, cable and gas are increasing. Bottom line is that the check no where will meet the increased costs of living here.0 -
We have bitter cold weather arriving this weekend. I think our temps are expected to drop by 50 degrees during the day on Saturday, and on Sunday the wind chill will feel like single digit temps. We haven't had weather that cold in quite awhile. I'm so not a cold weather person! I was thinking this morning that if we packed the car today and left tomorrow, we could be at the beach before the cold weather gets here, but DH nixed that plan.
The Hello Fresh box was pretty complete as far as ingredients. The only things I had to supplement were salt and pepper, olive oil, and butter, which I always have on hand. My main complaint was that I know I can make a comparable meal for about half the cost and the same amount of prep work. The only thing receiving their box would save me is the trip to the store to buy the ingredients. If I lived somewhere that didn't have good grocery stores, it might be worth it.
I had my PT assessment yesterday. The therapist commented that he was pleasantly surprised at how well my ankle had healed and was functioning because when he had reviewed my file prior to my arrival he wasn't expecting to have much to work with. He gave me some exercises to do at home to work on strengthening the ankle and when I go back next week we will start working on improving balance as well as continued strengthening exercises. I'll see him twice next week and the following week, then probably just continue working at home.0 -

Stay warm everyone!
I did take Indy to the eye doctor today. She took out half the stitches. The ulcer has healed, the "remodeled" third eyelid is looking good, the biopsy came back no cancer BUT her eye is still VERY inflamed. That might have something to do with what I learned when I got her back to the vet. She never got the one new anti-inflammatory eye med that she was supposed to start on two weeks ago. I got on the phone, completely retraced my steps to pick up eye meds and take it to the vet only to discover that they'd found they had some. She is also to start on interferon. Hopefully they can get that compounded. It's just one thing after another after another the last couple weeks.
I'm planning to board her another week or two and then bring her here. DH has capitulated (LOL!) My guess is she's going to have ongoing issues and if so I'll bring her here as a permanent foster.0 -
I see the long post I wrote didn't take. You must have wondered why I'd post just the letter C. LOL. I just got back from my last massage before we head south in 2 weeks. It will be too close to the holidays and I'll be in packing mode next week so I figure this was a good stopping point. I added in an extra visit this month so I'm feeling pretty good right now. She got all the areas where I store up my stress. My main weak parts are the uper back and neck area. I'm sure my not great posture when I use the computer and driving around are the main culprits.
Pam and Jean..It's wonderful that the PT is being beneficial. I'm with you Jean about driving a distance for the better quality than settling for something closer but inferior. I've been going to my friend for massages over 15 years. I could probably find someone closer but she knows all my trigger points and it's become a friendship over the years. It's about 25 miles each way but I'm usually listening to an audio book in the car to pass the time. I've never minded driving and now that we got rid of the RAV 4, I'm not having back and hip issues. I like the car but the seats were that scooped, sporty style. They really did a number on my back after long drives. We replaced it with a small pickup truck (DH's big wish). The seats in the truck are so much more comfortable and we have the extra space for bring things to FL.
Maryanne..that's great news about Indy's eye showing improvement. We miss having cat but with being gone half the year, it wouldn't be fair to bring in a new cat. I get nostalgic though whenever I see a cat video or a cute cat food commercial.0 -
The world is covered in ice. The birds and the squirrels are enjoying the bird feeders, suet feeders and heated bird bath. They are also having a blast in the water on the street. I guess there is water on the street because they salted. I hope the birds are okay with salt water.
We cancelled out of the flea market today. For once the weather people didn't make a fool of me!
Haven't tried to go out yet to feed.
DH is worried about this tabby in our neighborhood. Even built a little shelter and put out food. He/she ate a little - more like "this is interesting" than "I'm starving". I went over to the storage unit yesterday and got my trap just in case we saw him/her today but so far we haven't. I saw the little guy at the bus stop one morning when I was driving Jessicat to the vet. He/she was rubbing up against one of the kids. Since we can't get anywhere near him/her I'm thinking that was his/her person. I need to get myself up some morning and over to that bus stop.

Maryanne--Good news on Indy, but the Tabby may be a neighborhood cat that belongs to someone. Winter is just starting; survival time for all of us including the animals.
Helene--I had a Rav 4 as a rental once. It wasn't a good "fit" for me either. A good massage right now would be good. It won't be long until you go south to your Winter home. Envy, envy!
It has been a long, dark and dreary day. We had single digits yesterday but now it is 61 degrees. We are expecting another big reversal with snow. Hibernation time.0 -
We had 70's this morning and will need our parkas by dark. I went out around 1:00 to run a quick errand and the wind had already shifted and it was getting colder. I don't enjoy this type of weather at all!0
-
I wish people would put a collar on their cat if they are going to let it out. Then the rest of us wouldn't have to worry and fret.
It's supposed to be in the high 50's and rainy tomorrow. Better that than ice!0 -
Warm yesterday, chilly today!
I think I finally sent out the last of the cards. Whew!
I haven't finished the last of my work (by any means). I just keep on slogging away.0 -
-
I love it! We're finishing up errands and I'm setting aside clothes for laundry and for packing. We leave Tuesday so we still have a lot to do in the next five days. I put stops on mail, newspaper and cable, mailed a few cards, got RX print outs from the drugstore for tax prep. I need to review my list to see what still needs to be done. I'm sure I'll stop back at least once more before we start the trip. I hope you all have a lovely Christmas and safe travel if you'll be on the roads.0
-
Helene - Sounds like you've got quite the "to do" list. Here's hoping everything goes smoothly!
I'm off to one of the eye doctors this morning (the suspicion of glaucoma one). Such fun! Not!0 -
Things never slow down. I could easily sit here and relax but this is the only day a friend and I could meet for our early Christmas lunch, so I'll be off to another city 85 miles away. Yesterday, I had PT plus a Christmas lunch with my niece and a friend. Tomorrow, it is PT again.
Helene--Sounds like you will have things checked off for a smooth launch to your journey South. Safe travels.

I wish I was getting Grumpy cat. We miss not having cats but the time isn't right. Maybe next year? Jeanenjoy your lunch date. Things like that make it feel more like Christmas. Maryanne..Good luck with the eye doctor. I'm doing several loads of laundry this morning.0
-
Here's what I've been working on for the past couple of days. It's for one of the residents of the supported living campus for women leaving abusive relationships and getting their lives vets back on track.
0 -
Helene - you could always swing by Baltimore and adopt Pretty Boy. LOL!
Jean - LOVE that! Unfortunately that's all too true. I hate to be a cliche and start to eat right again at New Year's but it may come to that. I have the Grumpy cat tshirt with the "your present is in the litterbox" saying on it. Today I'm wearing "Meowy Christmas".
Went to the ophthalmologist this morning. Well one of them (I have two). He wants to see me back in 6 months. Apparently the "suspicion" of glaucoma is getting a little more suspicious.
While taking their eye exam I decided I probably need new glasses. I only wear them in the car and occasionally to see small print on the TV but mine are pretty old and I don't think I was seeing as well as I could, especially in the right eye. Apparently in spite of having two ophthalmologists I need yet a third person for that.
I also need to have the vision test for driver's license renewal. New thing in MD now. The eye doctor has to be registered with them as an online certified provider. I found a chain near me that's registered so they should be able to do both new glasses and driver's license. I think I'll bring my current glasses in to become my "tv glasses" and get new "car glasses".
My glasses are so old you can no longer tell that once upon a time one pair was tinted (my sunglasses equivalent) and one pair clear. Hope I don't have the usual fight ordering that again. They always want me to "give sunglasses a try". Been there, done that.

I don't think I have to go anywhere today. How unusual. Maybe I can get some stuff done. Tomorrow I go to York PA to have lunch with my dad, 2 brothers and a SIL. Miss my sister. Sunday we'll be here. I decided I don't have another turkey in me (opening for jokes there unintentional but recognized LOL!) but I want stuffing so I got a Perdue oven stuffer roaster Haven't made one of those in aeons but it's easy.

Maryanne..Are you saying the eye doctor reports online that you passed the vision test? MA is very low tech. They have a machine at the DMV that you look into. I have to renew next fall and I'm not seeing quite as well I as did after surgery. I mentioned it to my to my eye doctor and she said I'm developing a film on my left eye. It wasn't advanced enough yet but it might be when I see her next summer. I'd have to go back to the surgeon for a laser treatment. My mother had that done many years ago and it worked out fine. If I mentioned Pretty Boy to DH, he might just detour of I 95 !0
-
Helene - yes, eye doctors now report online to the DMV. I figure I'll combine new glasses which I really need with getting someone to do this for me. Then I can renew my driver's license online.0
