I did venture out yesterday for a bit to get a Christmas gift for one of my nephews. I didn't have to go to a mall, so it wasn't too bad. In the same shopping area I also went to another store that is a nice department store and found some new slippers for DH, which he needed. They had two different styles that I thought he might like for an excellent price, so I bought both and planned to return whichever ones he didn't want. As luck would have it, he likes both, but needs a different size, so I'll have to take care of that in a day or two. While there, I found two Christmas T-shirts for me and a puffer vest for $40 and another dressier shirt that I couldn't resist. I'll count those as my Christmas presents to myself, lol!
We spent Thanksgiving at my sister's place and had a nice time. Her oldest daughter is going through a divorce and it's a sad time for her and her two teenage children, but we enjoyed seeing them and spending time together. Her soon-to-be ex is an alcoholic who recently came out as gay, so she felt she had no choice but to get a divorce though he is now trying to convince her that he still wants to stay married. Last Thursday he drove drunk and totalled his third car in a year, but fortunately no one else was involved. The air bag broke his glasses and he got a piece of glass in his eye which required emergency surgery to remove, but other than that he was uninjured. He's been lucky with each accident in that they've all been single car incidents and he's walked away from them without injury or police involvement, so he's avoided any DUI charges. For now, he's getting around on foot, on bicycle, or asking friends for rides. It's a small town, so that's working for now. It's very sad to see him struggling but also frustrating to see him continually making such poor decisions. This is the same man who just took off for several days last spring.0 -
Jean - when I complained about balance they had me stand on a trampoline and try not to hold on. That wasn't easy so your foam square doesn't sound easy to me.
Someone put a foil roasting pan with a turkey carcass at one of the colonies. Say what????

Pam - two of DH's brothers were serious alcoholics. Luckily both lost their licenses before harming anyone but themselves. But that even further limited their social life and job prospects. Both died young. One had a son with a girlfriend. He'd bring the boy to family dinners. The little kid looked terrified most of the time. Very sad.0

At this point, even if he can scrape together enough money to get another car, I doubt that he could get insurance for it. Hopefully, that will keep him from driving but at this point he is making such poor decisions that I'm not sure what he will do. My niece filed for divorce on Tuesday but it will take at least 60 days from the date he signs the papers for it to become final. If he contests it or refuses to sign, I don't know how long it will take. My fear is that he will hurt someone while driving drunk and for the financial consequences of his continued bad judgment. The sooner the divorce is final, the sooner she will have some protection from that.0

Jean, your PT sounds intensive. It's good that you're seeing results. The drive home must be exhausting. I assume the therapist is next to you when you're on the foam block, in case you lose your balance.
Pam..What your niece is going through is awful. I hope he signs the papers and lets both of them get on with their lives. It's surprising that the police never got involved with multiple accidents.
We had a nice Thanksgiving in NJ. We left from CT because of the dental trip. So the ride down was 3 hours. It took us about 7 hours (with stops) to do the ride home. My nephew has 3 little ones (7,53) and they were pretty well behaved. SIL picked up a copy of Finding Dory and watching that settled them down. I was suprised how good the kids were with DH. Normally they'd be jumping on him and rough housing. One of the parents must have told them he was recovering from an operation. The two boys sat next to him looking at toy ads and telling him what they wanted Santa to bring them. I played a lot of card games with the 7 yr old. It was a very pleasant holiday.0 -
I have a potluck with my book group tonight. We do this every December. We make up a list of the books we'll read next year and share a yu,,y meal. I'll have to watch my portions because I came home with 2 extra pounds from Thanksgiving. I guess it could have been worse. What's everyone else doing today?0

I'm tired. I had picked Indy up on Monday when I was at the vet. Yesterday morning they wanted her in Annapolis at 9 am. I fought hard to take her Tuesday but they acted like I was crazy. Why? They are in a building with an ER that is 24/7. Other practices let you drop off the day before (as long as you pay). It was supposed to be foggy and raining so I planned to leave at 6:30. The traffic going to Annapolis can be horrible on a good day. As predicted the fog and rain were awful BUT it didn't take me much longer than usual to get there so we were early and had to wait. THEN they told me they weren't going to do the surgery until 12:30 because the doctor had "something to do". This woman continues to make me see red but she's what we've got. They said pickup would be between 3 and 5 and they close at 5. At 2:30 I hadn't heard anything so I called. They just started the surgery. Oh, joy. I told them I'd be heading out soon so they wouldn't be able to call me. I got there around 4 and sat until almost 6. So much for closing at 5. The drive back during rush hour and rain was awful. Again, no clue why she couldn't have spent the night. The ophthalmologist is still somewhat puzzled by what's going on with Indy's eye. We hope the surgery will give her relief and stop the issues but only time will tell. Poor little girl. It was too late to get her back to the vet last evening so she's here. Driving her back to the vet is yet another chore to add to today which is already over burdened. Anyway I should quit whining now.
Today I have to feed the colonies which I'm sure will need a major cleanup after the heavy rains yesterday. I have to take Indy back to the vet, go to the grocery store, do last month's bills for work, and load my van for the cat show this weekend. Oh, and supposedly do a full day's work which obviously isn't going to happen.
Helene - your potluck sounds like fun. What's the first book you are going to read?
Pam - so sorry for your niece and those poor children.0 -
I may not read the first book since I'll be in FL by then. It's called My Notorious Life by Katr mannine. here's a link to what it's about http://katemanningauthor.com/my-notorious-life/. If I can get it in FL, I'll read but I won't be at the discussion. I'm heading ut for a massage shortly. It sounds like you could use one after what you've been through with Indy.0

Well we got the cat show set up. I'm tired and achy but glad we've got everything ready. Here's hoping for a lot of shoppers!

I had a very fun day today. My grad school friends met me today for brunch, and afterward we headed to the downtown area of my town and browsed the shops for awhile. We ended up in a wine tasting room where we enjoyed a tasting flight of 3 different sparkling wines and a chocolate sampler. We sat and enjoyed a nice long catch up session, then finally had to leave as they were closing for a private event. We then headed back to our cars, and came home. It was a cold, rainy day, but we enjoyed ourselves in spite of it. We've been meeting to celebrate each of our birthdays for 26 years now, and hope to continue it as long as possible.
My town is known as "The Christmas Capital of Texas" and they really go all out with the decorations, parades, etc. We have quite a thriving downtown area with lots of unique stores, so it is fun to browse. Interspersed among all the interesting shops are 5-6 wine tasting rooms, in honor of the town's name and heritage. The town is called Grapevine, and was named so because of the wild grapevines that grew in the area at the time it was settled. The mayor and city council have actively courted the wine industry and it has paid off.
I'm trying to fight off a cold, so being out in the cold and rain probably wasn't the best choice today. I drank a couple of Mimosas at brunch, so hopefully the OJ will help!0 -
Sorry, I haven't been checking in lately but I worked 4 days last week combined with the trips to physical therapy and a cold. When I got home, I just collapsed, grabbed a bite and hit the bed to rest for a couple of hours before watching TV. Any shopping I've done has been online. I just don't want to deal with the crowds in the city if at all possible.0

The usual oatmeal for breakfast before I go to work. Midnight was active last night awakening me about every 2 hours. I hope he isn't getting sick or something. He has yet to touch his breakfast.0
-
I'm heading to CT this afternoon because my first dental app't tomorrow is very early. I'd have to leave here at 4 Am to be on time so going the day before made sense. Pam. your day sounded like s much fun. I've heard of Grapevine but didn't realize it was actually a wine area.0

Jack's internist's office called to verify our drop off between 7 and 8 am tomorrow. Um, no, just no! They weren't told I was dropping off tomorrow for Wednesday. Glad they called. I really like this place though - she just took it in stride! While he's there he's going to see ophthalmology, internal medicine and radiology. Hopefully we'll get some idea how to keep him comfortable for awhile yet!
I continue to slog through my holiday chores. About this point I'm at the "bah humbug" stage. Holiday? Schmoliday!!0 -
Helene--Going up the day before makes sense. I do that when I have one of those outrageously early plane flights. It adds to the cost but I don't want to leave the house at 2am in order to drive almost 2 hours for the required check in time. You'll get some additional sleep this way.
Maryanne--So much for effective communication. I'm with you on the "bah humbug." I just want it to be done and over. The Christmas holiday was always a time of strife and bad events in the family, so it was not the "Merry, Ho Ho" pushed by merchants to get us to buy more as if the price tag is what makes it Christmas0 -
I'm in the Bah Humbug camp, as well. I'm still not feeling very well, so I'm sure that contributes to my attitude. Usually, DH isn't that into it but will somewhat grudgingly put up outside decorations. This year he is insisting upon putting up the tree and putting out decorations we haven't bothered with in years. I keep thinking about what a hassle it will be to take it all down after the holiday.
Our niece and her husband and son were supposed to be here this weekend but have had to cancel their trip. Her husband is active duty Army and they live in Williamsburg, VA. He's been working really hard to complete his BA degree and is graduating this week, which was the purpose of their trip. Unfortunately, they had a major plumbing leak in their downstairs bathroom late last week that damaged all of the flooring. They are still trying to get it all dried out but are having such damp weather right now that it just isn't drying. So they decided they needed to stay home. I'm so disappointed for her husband because he was really excited to participate in the graduation ceremonies. He was graduating with a 4.0, and has already been accepted into the Masters program at Johns Hopkins.0 -
Once I finish slogging through the holiday chores (notice I'm assuming I will LOL!) I'll get in the holiday spirit but until then.....
I tend to leave the holiday decorations out awhile into January. Putting everything away slowly isn't as big a deal. Then I get out my "first quarter of the year" decorations. Yes, I decorate all year round. Not on a huge scale but just little touches. Since I work at home I"m always in this house and it helps to brighten my day.
Today I feed the colonies (I'm hoping to beat the rain for that step) and then I take Jack to the vet in Fairfax.
I got a little bit of a break. I had had a project dumped on me after two other people bailed. Sometimes I feel like Mikey in that old cereal commercial. Give it to Maryanne she'll eat (do) it! Anyway no one told me the client was having a meeting today. The boss suddenly ordered someone else to do it yesterday. Here I thought I was going to be scrambling to get that one done this week. Now I can get back to other work. I'm sort of proud of me. I gave the new kid some tips and stepped away. Just can't believe how much time I wasted on this over the last week or so as everyone dumped and dodged.0 -
I'm in the bah humbug group as well. We may hang a wrath outside and that's it. We'll be heading south in a few weeks and it's just us for Christmas so it seems like too much work to decorate. I did well at the dentist today. He just called to check on how I was doing. All things considered, I'm doing well. I've got a little tenderness but ibuprofen should take care if it. I bought the PM version for tonight so I can sleep. I'll take the regular variety during the day so I'm not walking around dopey. He was able to do the whole implant in today's visit so I won't have to go back later in the month. We may be able to head south a few days sooner than planned. As long as we leave before major snow, I'll be happy. Dr. G retires in April so I was really lucky he was able to get me in this month.0

Pam - just too funny!
Can I put my bah humbug in neon?
Took Jack to the internist yesterday. It's just a little over 50 miles, on the Baltimore Beltway, I-95 and the Capital Beltway. Basically nowhere you want to get stuck. About 10 miles from home a light came on on my dashboard. A sensible person might have turned around. Not I! Ms intrepid (aka Ms. stupid) here spent the next 40 miles plotting her options, such as AAA towing to the Fairfax Toyota dealer. Got Jack there and checked in and pulled out my owner's manual. It was the tire pressure light. This van has run flat tires. They will run for 50 miles without air. So the question was - I'm 50 miles from home - am I down to the "no air" state yet. I didn't think so because the one time that happened the tire made a HUGE racket. So I headed home. I figured that if I got stuck at least Jack wasn't with me. Got home, go to get my extra tire (this van has no spare but we always buy 5 tires) and can't find the garage key. I haven't been inside our garage since before my accident (which was 1/01). Dug through drawers and finally found the hugest ring of keys I'd ever seen. Luckily they are labelled. Not so luckily there are several very different keys labelled "garage". I tried them all and finally opened it. Luckily the tire was in the front so I didn't have to go in (so I still haven't been in the garage). Manhandled the huge, heavy thing into my van. Called Mr. Tire. They can't see me. Called another Mr. Tire and they said "come on down". For some reason I sat there for well over an hour. After about half an hour the other person in the waiting room left and I begged them to let me turn off the TV which was blaring a soap opera. Luckily they agreed. Turned out I had a huge screw in one tire. Probably from the colonies. So they put on my 5th tire and ordered me a new one.
I talked to Jack's internist twice yesterday. Went to bed early. Got up this morning to a message that they'd had issues with Jack - trouble breathing, trouble warming him up, not good. But I figured that the fact that there was no morning message was good news.
Had a massive water overflow in the bathroom this morning. Set off TWO of DH's daggone alarms. Neither of which had an off switch so I have to unattach them (DH "kindly" pointed out later I could have taken the batteries out - the fact that he's still alive is a miracle).
Took Jessicat to the oncologist. Her report was pretty good. In the waiting room I got to pet a cattle herding dog (that's his breed; he's actually a pet and loves to herd grandchildren) and a collie. Got home to good news about Jack. I'll pick him up tomorrow.
No news yet from Mr. Tire about my tire coming in. I haven't paid them yet so I'm not concerned.
What else if going to happen this week?

Maryanne, what a day! I hope that's all the bad luck for you for awhile. I think you've exceeded your quota for sure!0
-
In other news, I saw my ortho doctor today for follow up and I'll be starting physical therapy next week to work on gaining more flexibility and improving my balance. I hope to get in several sessions before the end of the year since I've already paid my deductible and coinsurance maximum for the year.0 -
Pam..That's wonderful news about being able to start PT. I hope you can get a bunch of sessions before the end of the year. It would be a shame not to use it after paying all the deductibles.
Maryanne..What a stressful day you had. I was wondering where DH was when you were trying to get into the garage and again when the alarm went off. Did the overflow do any damage? At least you had good news about the cats.
We have the plumber coming to replace one of the boiler pumps. We have 3 zones and one isn't working. We had him here a few weeks ago for service but the pump continues to stop working. We can't take a chance of the heat not working while we're away so he's going to replace the bad pump tomorrow. We can'r complain because the pump is about 35 years old. At least it happened before we left.Wwe'll be going right after Christmas.0 -
I'm going back to the doctor today to see if the meds she put me on a few months ago are working to lower my cholesterol. Here's hoping. I was very stressed when I last saw her. DH was still in the hospital and actually had his pacemaker surgery later that day. My BP was elevated but I think it was all the stress. She didn't put me on anything for BP so I hope today's reading is better. I really don't want another pill to add to the growing collection.
A year ago, I was just on thyroid meds and now I'm up to 4 different pills a day. At least it's not for anything major, but I'd like to get rid of the statin at some point and not add anything else. We bought pricey walking shoes last week. It's been pretty chilly here so I haven't put them to use yet but I expect to use them in FL. Sticking to a walking routine is how I hope to get rid of the statin drug but that won't happen until we get back. When I was going to Curves, I saw a dramatic reduction in cholesterol but then my Curves went out of business. I can go back to aqua aerobics and walk while I'm in FL.
Maryanne..Is this a cat show weekend? It was great news that one of your tasks got off loaded to someone else. You always have a pretty full plate without people adding things. How is the woman doing who fed the colonies? Will she ever be able to take that back?
Jean..Are you still doing PT?
I ran into a friend at church the other day. She hadn't seen DH since before his bypass. She thought he looked great. She told us her husband recently had a heart attack. I was pretty shocked and didn't get much detail because we were in church. I mentioned it to another friend to see if she knew when he had the attack. She'd just heard about it the day before and thought it was around Thanksgiving.
The husband used to volunteer at the church thrift shop and did heavy lifting there (furniture). He gave that up but is still doing landscaping work. I asked what that meant and my friend said he rakes leaves for customers in his neighborhood. DH's cardiologist told him no raking or shoveling so I was shocked to hear J is doing that. He received 2 stents around Thanksgiving so I think it's too soon for him to do something like that or if he should even be raking at all. Maybe the topic never came up with his doctor. I hope he doesn't give himself another attack.0 -
No cat show this weekend. I did the grocery shopping today and am now digging into the CROM paperwork pile.
Helene - the only drug I take is zocor. DH has zillions of supplements and zillions of prescriptions. I guess I'm just lucky. I actually made a really serious effort for a year to stay off the statin but no go. I think mine is hereditary. It sounds like you'll have exercise options in FL.
Pam - that meme (right word?) is hilarious! I printed it out for DH. I'm losing track of all the asinine appointments. I think if someone sat down and make a joke list of the worst appointees possible, it would pretty much match Trump's actual list.
Funny thoughts from dogs: http://cheezburger.com/1229573/15-deep-thoughts-your-dog-has-probably-had-at-some-point-in-their-life?ref=mosaicthumb20 -
Maryanne, I agree about Trump's appointments. If he's "draining the swamp" I can't see that what he's replacing it with is any better. The way I see it, his holdings are so large and far-flung, it will be impossible to avoid conflicts of interest. I think his presidency will be one of the most corrupt reigns of terror ever.
Helene, my cholesterol has been mildly elevated at times, but I control it by taking a supplement called Red Yeast Rice. When I'm exercising and using it, my cholesterol drops below 200 and the ratios are good. You might see if your doctor would agree to let you try it, unless your numbers are too high.0 -
Sad news last night about a former co-worker from another former co-worker. I trained both of these women and worked with both of them later when I stepped down from the trainer position and went part-time. Both were in their early 30's when I left the company and both were single. One of the girls was kind of a party girl while the other was very religious, kind of awkward and quirky, but very sweet and kind. They became really good friends.
Fast-forward a few years and the party girl decided to move back to south Florida where she met and married her husband 4.5 years ago. The other girl stayed in Dallas, and about three years ago decided she wanted to be a mother more than anything, but there was no man in her life, nor did she think that was likely to happen, so she pursued IVF treatments and got pregnant with twin girls. At 19 weeks the twins were delivered and later died in her arms the same day as it was too early for viability. As soon as she could, she began IVF treatments again, eventually becoming pregnant again with twin boys. In the meantime, party girl in Florida and her husband were also pursuing fertility treatments, without success.
Last night I got word that the pregnancy was in trouble and in fact though she was hospitalized for the past three weeks, the babies were delivered yesterday at 24 weeks, but their mother died during the delivery. Apparently, she had been advised that her life was at risk several weeks ago, but she was determined to hang onto the pregnancy for as long as possible in order to ensure that the babies would be viable when delivered. She got her wish, but at the cost of her own life.
In an interesting, Hallmark movie-like twist, the party girl and her husband are trying to adopt the babies. I don't know how likely that is. As far as I know, there is only one grandmother who could potentially choose to raise them, but I think she is at least my age or older. Also, they live in Florida and the babies were born in Texas, so I'm sure that would complicate an adoption. For now, the babies are in the NICU and likely to be there for awhile. They weighed right around 2 pounds each, so they will need to gain some weight before they go anywhere. Apparently they are doing well, despite their early appearance.0 -
Pam - wow, what an amazing story! And yes, it does sound like a Hallmark (or Lifetime) movie! If they would be good parents, I hope it works out for them.
I'm off to the hairdresser this morning after I feed the colonies.0 -
Pam..What a sad story. Her family and friends must be devastated. I pray those twins survive and thrive and get adopted into a good home. Because of the different states, your other friend may have difficulties adopting the. Let us know what happens when you get an update. I pray they will thrive and get adopted together into a good home.0
