Gail, I'm sorry for what your family is going through. Families can be so difficult. I always say that my family took the "fun" out of dysfunctional. Yeah, we're THAT family. I hope everyone is doing okay. Good for you on the weight loss and sticking to the portion control. That's a constant struggle for me. I'm sure one-derland is in your future soon!

Milove, welcome to Atlanta! Having a little break from routine can be wonderful but definitely challenging when it comes to eating choices. I usually fail miserably at that. Good for you for logging everything and I think eating half of your portion is a great approach! Enjoy your reading, too!

Snoozie, I hate cooking in the morning but I love a hot breakfast. I tried chopping the bell pepper, onion and mushrooms ahead of time but never thought about cooking them and then freezing! Brilliant! I may have to try that! What are smart sense tortillas? Lower calories? That sounds so yummy! Also....your Jamie Oliver video was so funny! My tastes have definitely changed over the years and now I get pretty excited over veggies. My favorite food used to be any kind of heavy pasta with cheese or a cream sauce but now....give me some good roasted veggies and I'm in heaven. Oh...pick up some fresh ginger (if you like it) for your stir fry...makes a huge difference!

I don't know about a reward but I had an IPOM last night. My husband had to work late and I went on our nightly walk by myself instead of just blowing it off! I even walked an extra 10 minutes. I'm basically a very lazy person at heart, so this was huge for me!

I'm trying not to feel too frustrated this morning. I hiked six miles, walked three miles three out of four nights, stayed on track with my calories and have not lost even half a pound since Saturday. I know I'm being unreasonable but DANG!!! This is me...not patiently waiting for that whoosh!!! :s

Okay. Rant over. I. Will. Not. Give. Up!

Oh Susie I feel for you ...if it all possible stay off the scale's for a couple of days! Keep doing what you're doing it will work just the body doesn't do it when we want it does it when it wants which is so unfair but you will see it I promise ! The woosh factor will happen !!

    Morning hatters

today was my weigh in day; no loss but I know it will come if I stay consistent - had a pretty good week with portion sizes; not enuf veg the last half but will work on that this week! Had to forgo my walks with a sore foot for a few days but its feeling better today so hoping to get out and about again tomorrow. Keeping focused on what I want; yesterday someone brought some leftover baked goods in and we were like locusts - I grabbed a slice of what appeared to be an iced cinnamon apple bread .. took one bite and realized it wasn't that good... and I actually thought to myself do I wanna waste the calories for this on something just.. blah.. so I tossed the rest of it in the garbage... that's an IPOM for me for sure lol.

Also going to make sure I incorporate some non food related rewards this week - the mind and soul need a bit of TLC !

Hope everyone has a good week and takes care of themselves!

IPOU , too ,Snoozie. iced cinnamon apple bread does sound delightful, so if it wasn't , rightly so ,no need to waste the calories. Yes, it will happen. You will get that loss going soon!!

IPOM for forgoing the homemade buttermilk biscuits I made for Breakfast yesterday...They did look lovely and Young Son said they were great. I just didn't feel tempted.

Suzy, sorry to hear about the lack of whoosh!! I know you put so much of yourself into the walks. Maybe the body is just holding onto more fluid.

Ha! I'm not sure my boobs and brain would total five pounds!

Gail, I can't imagine not eating homemade biscuits! You're a self control Wonder Woman in my book! And Snoozie, way to go on realizing that the apple bread just wasn't worth it!

We backpacked over the weekend and camped Saturday night at a beautiful overview in the mountains of northeastern Alabama. We were the only people for miles! It wore me out and was very humbling. I have a lot of work to do to get ready for the four day hike coming up in five weeks. Yikes!!! I did manage to lose two pounds last week! Yay!! However this morning I was up a pound. Boo!!! I refuse to give in and order the pizza I'm craving though. I'm upping my daily exercise to include a one hour hike in a local park that had some decent elevation changes. I'm working up to hiking Kennesaw mountain every day. I'd like to be doing that daily for at least a week and a half before we go on our trip. That's a huge goal for me!

Hope everyone is doing okay this week! I like the idea of just trying to do a little bit better every day.

Suzy - I would love to see some pics of your hikes - it sounds like you hit some beautiful places! great daily exercise goal for prep work..... and huge congrats on the 2 lb loss!!!! yahoo!

as for the up a pound this morning.. just a little fyi.. last night I could NOT sleep for love or money... I was up literally every 2 hours from midnight to 6am.. and since I was.. I decided to hop on the scale each time simply as a little test... through those 6 hours my weight varied by 3 lbs both ways.... in 6 hours... I even hopped on twice at each time just to make sure... I found it quite hysterical really .. and why I actually only count the Monday morning weight.. I admit I hop on most days.. but I no longer freak when it shows a fluctuation up after seeing that last nite! so don't sweat it (literally or figuratively) - its the consistency with continuing to eat well, eat a little less than we burn and moving more that will ensure that 2 lb drop not only holds, but continues.. remember we all know our bodies aren't linear and won't lose it as we "go"... it has to wait for the time it's comfortable letting go... in other words our bodies are actually men LOLOL.

Gail huge kudos on the bisqweeee (that's what we call em here..[phonetically biss squeeeeeee) kinda a French accent with a rising at the end.. actually now I hear it as I say it, it sounds sort like a pig squealing the way we say it ... and by we I mean my family... the rest of the 24 million Canadians call em biscuits properly lol

HANG IN everyone!! and ya 5 lbs might be stretching it for my B&B's - but I thought it was a great pic ha.. bedtime for bonzo here; I ate well but a little short on water (only about 3 cups) but I have a long busy day tomorrow; an event a the LAC from 8-11am then work from 12-9 .. but then vacay for 10 days sooooooooo I shall not *kitten* LOL.. nope not at all!!

    nite nite

Vacation for ten days sounds wonderful!

I succumbed to my weaker side last night and had pizza...at least it was crispy thin crust. What is life without a little pizza? It had been an entire month! I'm only human!!! Of course I'm up three pounds today. :s Whatever...it will come back off quickly...it's probably just water retention. Ugh.

Gail, I hope you're not getting too much rain and bad weather. Harvey isn't done with us yet and I know Mississippi is getting lots of rain and some tornadoes.

I am laughing at you testing your weight every two hours or so......it sounds like something I have probably done(guilty)...only it was right before eating and directly after eating. I even thought about weighing my food when I stepped on the scale.....but I didn't want to take it into the bathroom.
Ten days does sound great. especially if you get to leave home....

Yep, just water weight...Suzy, Pizza does that to me too. I always fluff up about 3 lbs with fluid. but I can't live without pizza either . Have you heard about the low carb version of pizza? Fat Head Pizza ? It actually tastes very good. and it didn't swell me up...
We are under a tornado watch today, but up to now it has just been raining constantly......nothing to hard and heavy.

One more day till the holiday. Hope youi all have fun and be safe...
Snoozie, not sure if it's one you celebrate, but sill have fun & be safe.....Yes, I kinda' daydreamed my way through most history...

Suzy - we're not meant to live our lives without pizza or chocolate cake IMO... for me its just learning to make those choices the exception rather than the rule now - and to learn to just enjoy em when I do indulge... I admit a part of me still feels "guilty" sometimes when i'm eating something I know isn't a good choice... but I also know if I can get to the point where I eat well 90% of the time, I won't ever have to worry or feel bad again when indulging in the 10..

and you know the 3 lbs has nothing to do with the pizza.. its just the normal fluctuation our bodies go thru up and down (apparently every 2 hours LOL.)

. and Gail yup it was just something to do since I couldn't sleep and it was more of a scientific experiment LOL... and actually it was a really good thing in the end.. made me realize just how much I need to break the daily habit of hopping on the scale - well the mental effect of doing so....because I will prolly always jump on, but I no longer let the # affect me... and whatever it says on my once a week weigh in day every Monday, that's the only one that matters and even then, I am simply thinking of that as ONE measure of my progress towards my goal... this past Monday I was up slightly...but my uniform pants are looser... today my daily hop today showed I was down a bit again, but because I've seen just how much it fluctuates in just 8 hours.. it was simply.. interesting to see the #... for me I am definitely convinced only doing an official weigh in once a week is much better than letting that daily # affect me in any way... so although I slept like crap that night, some good came out of it LOL!!

p.s. gail no worries.. I get confused over who celebrates what and when too, especially cause I have a lot of friends in the States lol! This IS a long weekend for us here too.. called Labour Day weekend, but long weekends rarely affect me as we work most holidays. But as i'm on vacation now anyway, they are all holidays LOL!!

I was updating my calendars - phone and wall cause yes I still use a paper wall calendar too.. and realized I did a dumb move; scheduled a couple of doc appts while I was off but instead of smooshing them all together in 1 or 2 days, I spread em out.. grrrrr.. I was thinking of maybe taking a 2 or 3 day road trip out to the 1000 islands; do one of the afternoon cruises and perhaps pop over to the States for a day or 2 as well.. but not sure i'll have time due to those pesky appts.. oh well note to self for next time - not exactly a crisis hahah.

Its supposed to cool down tonite so i'm thinking of maybe making a nice thick veggie stew for dinner.. it can simmer all afternoon and can freeze some down as well... but either way I need to get moving my parts for the day..

keep on working towards what you want for yourselves ladies.. we CAN and will get our reward as long as we keep aiming for it!

    Happy September, Snoozie!!

I am still aiming for One-derland. I believe it is possible.

Be More consistent with my exercise.

Less off plan snacking. ( I have been doing great with this so far, compared to later years. There are 3 or 4 bags of Lays....( you know our weakness, Snooze) .....and I haven't been tempted to eat a half of a bag. )

Try to manage more ME - time for a reward.

Note to self!! -25 lbs divided by 16 weeks is only around 1.5 lbs to lose.......very do-able!!!

Gail - I am very impressed with your thoughts and plans for getting what you want - hitting Onederland! It IS possible and I believe you will achieve it and let us celebrate with you!!! Those are really excellent goals - and you have made huge strides in the OP snacking already - super excited for you moving forward!!

LOL @ the bags of (insert bad word here). I actually bought a bag (well I bought the cheap .99 store version in hopes since they weren't my beloved Lays I wouldn't eat them .. but apparently it doesn't matter; they are my kryptonite and I just can't have them in the house anymore.

I rewarded myself with a couple of hours chill time yesterday reading and snuggled in.. but boy was I stiff today!! I also fell asleep on the love seat which is really bad for my neck and shoulder lol.. but fortunately I seem to have escaped any big ow so I will focus on my stretches more this weekend. I also made choices to eat some less good things yesterday, but they were deliberate choices knowing it was a one off day and happily back to yummy healthy eating today with no guilt.

I got down to the lake this morning; it was like a beautiful fall morning; cool and sunny and breezy.. just lovely!! Today will be lots of house chores and once i'm caught up there am free to do whatever I want from here on in lol.

My own plans/goals for this month and forward - continue focusing on healthy, yummy food to nourish me, and to be more conscious and mindful when I eat.. working on smaller portions and waiting to see if i'm actually hungry for more, or just eating more out of habit. Adding more nuts to my diet, and having at least 2 meatless dinners a week.

This pic is from where I start my walk - just entering the path and thot it was kinda neat with the trees almost making a frame by themselves... and ran into this little butterfly this morning; he was quite happy to ignore me while I crept up to snap his pic LOL

Hahaha.....I know what you mean! ( bad word)

I find myself falling asleep on the couch or in the computer chair. Stiff neck and back ......but sometimes I can't make myself get up and go somewhere more comfortable.

Oh, speaking of exercises.....the neck exercises have worked great. I am not as tight I just need to do them regularly. THANKS!! Where do I send the check!? lol

Great planning. The meatless meals sound good. I get tired of cooking meats. I love how you get in your walks and with such a beautiful spot to walk in, it looks like it is relaxing at the same time,, along with a opportunity to meet new people. win/win/win

Quote: to be more conscious and mindful when I eat..

This!! I should really learn to do this....sometimes it's gone so quick, that I have to sit to and ask myself ....did I just eat something?

I know you will enjoy your days off.....

Snoozie I love your lake!!!! What a gorgeous place to walk!

Being mindful. I love that. Seriously, that's the whole point, isn't it? Mindful of what we're eating. Mindful of how much we're moving. Mindful of our place in this crazy, mixed up, glorious and often frustrating life! I think that needs to be my new mantra, "be mindful."

My goals for September? I have no commitments this month...no trips or special occasions except that we get to see our son next Friday. He's in town for one evening (he works for the country band Lady Antebellum as their lighting director) for a concert and we get to hang out with him. So.....
    1. Stick to my calorie goals by choosing more vegetables and less everything else!
    2. Work up to ten mile walks and by the end of the month do three in one week.
    3. Daily stretching.
    4. Weight training twice a week.

As far as weight loss goals...I've struggled so hard in the past and thought I'd see a huge loss and then nothing. So I'm cautiously hoping for six pounds by the end of the month. I think it's over reaching but it's a goal to shoot for. I'd really like to at least be where I was last year when we did our AT hike....considering I had planned on being at my goal weight by the time we did the hike this year.

Suuuuuzzzzzzzzzzzy !!!!!!!!! seriously - your son is lighting director for Lady A group?? I LOVE them... "Need you now" is one of my absolute favourites !! lol but more importantly, since working at the LAC I've only recently started to learn about the importance of lighting directors!! You never really pay much attention til you realize/learn just how much the lighting adds to a show - often our little wall seats inside the theatre are next to the lighting booth so i''m learning a little... and watching.... that's a seriously cool job your son has!! and one where I suspect he'll never be out of work with that skill!! Now I have that song in my head LOL... AND im very hapy you get to see your son!

love your plan for this month; and love that you specified working up to one of them.. and yes mindful is a good word you're right - I often eat more because of the serving size I've dished up.. I clean my plate mostly out of habit ... not because I actually needed to eat it all.. so that's for me the focus.. start small; know I can eat more if i'm actually hungry still, or if I get hungry 2 hours later to have a snack like an orange or something tht takes a while to get thru.. but I have to admit I rarely feel hunger any more which is not a good thing... the only time is when I wait too long to eat and i'm suddenly famished, and then I pig out so fast and eat so much because i'm starving...

Gail - im glad the stretches have worked for you; funny thing ya they work for me too... yet I don't do them every single day as I should which makes NO sense because it keeps the pain away.. I will do them for 2 or 3 days then start skipping.. unti the pain or stiffness comes back.. so that will be added to my sept goals too.. daily stretching no matter what!

Suzy - I am sure you will start to see the loss happening soon!! I know what you mean about planning to have been at GW - I had too but it's more important that we are still working towards our goal and we WILL get there!! yayyyyyyyyyy all of us!!

Gail - if you come across any good vegetarian dinner ideas let me know! I have a few on standby like the kidney bean quesadillas and a high fibre pasta loaded with veggies but always looking for more!

loving we are all making plans to work on what we want this month... a solid foundation to help us get there!!

    Good morning Hatters...

We've talked recently about our plans for continuing our weight loss, and the importance of nourishing not just our bodies, but our minds and souls as well. This morning I was flipping through facebook, and one of my friends posted this to one of our co-workers - telling her that she was my friend's lollipop moment during her grief over her mom passing away. It made me think of something I try to remember - that we never know that one moment where we can make a difference in someone elses life without even knowing It.. like when your friend told you about way back in grade 8 Suzy.. you having an impact on her.

We are so much more than our weight - and it IS a great thing to want to be healthy and work towards that; but I thought this would be a good reminder that all parts of us are important, our compassion, our kindness, our taking a minute now and then to help someone else or to just lend a shoulder and listen sometimes - like we do here for each other too! those are gifts we as women have but tend to overlook sometimes, so if you have 3 minutes today, this short video may just nourish your soul :)

That might be the best 3 minutes I have spent. I was about to cry and laugh in the same moment. Thank you Suzanne!!

You have especially been a lollipop moment to me for the last 3 or so years.( has it been that long? )....... Always managing to make the most mi-nute item in my weightloss/kicking diabetes journey seem like I was really getting it done.....even though I have done more back- peddling than forward peddling.

    Thank you!!
    can't find an lollipop....

Snoozie and Gail thank you, and you are both correct why did I worry, when I got back I was only 2 lbs over and I had such a relaxing time. Well, I am back to the drawing board but at least I did not go way over on the scale. Snoozie it is so good that you put in the extra walking time, are you walking around the lake?

    Morning Hatters!

Today was my weigh in day, no loss this week but just have to remember it ain't linear and my body won't catch up to my efforts until it's ready.. I don't think its quite fair our bodies are like men - doing it when THEY want rather than when we want.. but... such is life ha. This week focus will continue to be on better choices, smaller portions and waiting for a bit of hunger to kick in and NOT waiting for famished !!

Milove - i'm so glad you had such a relaxing time - and that you enjoyed yourself!!

Suzy - omg. I cannot believe you climbed that mountain!! Well I do believe it.. but holy cow ... I huff and puff going up a ... whats the smallest kind of hill, a knoll ?? So pumped for your accomplishment, well done you!!

I had a bit of a lie in this morning... I suspect the lake will be a bit crowded this holiday morning so I better get my butt down there before they all come out of the woodwork lol .

have a great weekend everyone! be good to yourselves, and remember we deserve to treat ourselves well in all areas!!

Gwen, way to go! I would consider two pounds to be a victory!

Snoozie, you're allowed to lie in...aren't you on vacation?!?! The scale will catch up soon. I channeled you last night and did a great job on portion control with dinner. I made myself way too much cauliflower and brussel sprouts and salmon. So I divided it and put some in the fridge instead of putting it all on my plate like I usually would. Thanks for the inspiration!

I got new hiking boots yesterday because my old (only one year old!! ) boots had started hurting my feet. I was so mad at myself for not returning the old ones before the year was up. At REI they give you a year to return anything you buy...no questions asked. Oh well...lesson learned. Anyway... I'm heading out now to try my first small hike with the new shoes. My hubby wants to do another overnight backpack trip this weekend to make sure they'll be okay for our four day hike. It makes me tired just thinking about all this upcoming hiking!!!!

I hope everyone is doing well! Have a great day Hatters!

"Only" one pound gone.. means one of these GONE from YOU!!!!! SO WOO to the hoo ladies!

oh and Suzy.. I channeled YOU tonite - I've mentioned I can't even make a stir fry that tastes edible so while I was at a lovely little shop near me that has a great butcher section, I found they had a beef stir fry mix - and a chicken one; all fresh and ready to go and the beef is already seasoned and had some green and red peppers along with - so I got a small tub worth and cooked it up, adding in my own veggies along with and it was actually quite good.. I could have used a little more flavour, although that could be on me for cooking it too long, but it was better than anything I've made and I managed to get in a lot of veggies plus have leftovers for tomorrow lunch :) ever since you mentioned that stir fry a ways back I've been wanting one so with the cheat, it was a win win LOL

WOW!!!! I need to print off that picture of fat and tape it all over my kitchen!!! That's so disgusting!!!

Good for you on making the stir fry!! I have discovered zuchini noodles (zoodles) and am hooked! I make them instead of rice or any pasta. Also, try some fresh ginger in that stir fry and it will add tons of flavor. Way to go Snoozie!

It's disgusting, but its fabulous you lost at least one of those - how great that sucker is gone ???!!!!!!

oh hell I forgot about the ginger... I will absolutely use this cheat again and will make sure I grab some!!

my sister is a spiralizing freak... she bought one of those spiralizers and does all kinds of stuff including the zuchhini noodles and swears by it!!

hope its an easy go breaking in the new shoes.... !!

    Good morning Hatters!

I found this article this morning in a Zoomer magazine - which is geared towards those of us over 50 let's say lol..

This article suggests some reasons why many of us at this stage of life particularly struggle with weight loss - more so focusing on the mind set we have ingrained in us after decades of having the mantras of "how to diet" drilled into us.. and i was thinking after reading some of the info below, that perhaps indeed our thought processes towards how to get what we want should change too.. we have those old deep seated "rules" so ingrained in our heads, i wonder if sometimes they don't work against us at this age.

Anyway, I particularly liked the final paragraph - "weight loss needs to be about people striving to live the healthiest lives they can enjoy -- and not the healthiest lives they can tolerate. They need to make lifestyle changes, that are significant and enjoyable, but not severe. And that can be challenging when you've got a society telling you they need to be severe to work.""

So I thought i would share it and ask your own thoughts on the ideas presented? Yay or nay as such lol.

    Article from Zoomer

We've all been there. Desperately wanting to lose those few extra pounds, or in some cases a lot of extra pounds, but no matter which diet we try we always seem to end up where we started from. It's frustrating and demoralizing and it tastes like failure.

But it doesn't have to be this way, says Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an Ottawa-based obesity expert

"If there was a quick fix we'd all be skinny," he points out. "The more permanent the weight loss needs to be the more permanent the lifestyle changes need to be." So what's preventing us from getting there?

    1. think dieting has to be painful. "The past 60 to 80 years of modern day dieting has been predicated upon the notion that dieting success is about suffering," says Dr. Freedhoff. "It suggests that people struggling with their weight don't deserve to eat like normal people or use food for comfort and celebration. Instead they're only supposed to use food for fuel and shut off the other normal uses. This doesn't work."

    2. We Under eat: Trying to starve yourself into thinness doesn't work either. "Hunger is a very powerful physiological force," says the diet doctor. "It's second only to breathing for survival. To think we can fight 100 million years of evolution which has made our bodies really good at securing calories simply because we want to get into a particular clothing size is folly.

    3. "We over-exercise. "People undertake exercise regimes that are truly 'regimes'," he says. "People see these shows on TV where they suggest that exercise to the point of throwing up is desirable. Again, that is not a lifestyle – it's a life sentence." People also tend to overestimate the number of calories they're burning, which can lead to frustration. "As a consequence, exercised-based approaches to weight management tend to get disappointing quite quickly," he says. "That's why gyms are busy in January and empty in March."

    4. We often consume too much processed food. "We've been duped by the food industry and our own willingness to believe you can find health and weight loss in restaurants or boxes, but it doesn't work that way," he says. "We, as a society, seem to be using restaurants and processed foods like our grandparents used refrigerators and the produce drawers." Dr. Freedhoff says he sees far more people who eat out three to four times a week than he does people who eat out three to four times a month. That equates to weight loss woes. "The calories we consume in restaurants are non-intuitive and astronomical in many cases. That salad you order might have more calories than a person burns in an entire day."

    5. We don't think about the calories we're drinking. "People are usually aware that sugar-sweetened beverages can be problematic but they don't always think about the cream and sugar in their coffee," he says. "And people really don't like to think about alcohol because they enjoy it so much, but red wine has double the calories of Coca Cola and that's something you can't ignore if you're trying to lose weight."-

    Best advice he can offer?

Weight management, in general, needs to be about people striving to live the healthiest lives they can enjoy -- and not the healthiest lives they can tolerate. They need to make lifestyle changes, that are significant and enjoyable, but not severe. And that can be challenging when you've got a society telling you they need to be severe to work."

A pound of fat is not flattering!

Amen Snoozie and Suzy, I finally see the scale moving down I am so pleased this morning.

I went to the optometrist to have an eye exam and I had high pressure in both eyes. I am now scheduled on Friday with the ophthalmologist to rule out I won't say the name.
