    Morning Hatters..

I heard on the news that today is International Self Care Day - focusing on the importance of taking time for YOU in this fast paced world... they picked this day because o the significance of us being on the go 24/7 (july 24)

As we already know, many of us (in my opinion especially women) think we can't put ourselves first ever.. cause everyone else needs us and everything has gotten so busy.. we are surounded 24/7 with noise/needs/etc.. but taking just 20 min a day just for YOU doing something simple... and alone... has apparently been shown to out perform
anti depressants and reduce chronic pain and all kinds of other good things!

one iea was a 20 min nature walk every day.. and it has to be out in nature not a mall LOL... another was a meditation type thing and if you're not into meditation, use something like the Headspace app... you push a button and the voice says hey did ya have a hard day... c'mon sit down on the couch for a sec... lets ya tune out the world and just chill for 10-15 min ..

they mentioned several other things to do in that 20 min alone period... but I hadn't had enough coffee to remember them all hahaha..

anyway... as today is International Self Care Day - hope all the Hatters take the time for a little self care in whatever way makes them happy!!

Thanks for the reminder , Snoozie. I do so miss the out in nature 20 minute walks vs the indoor track, but not enough to get my night owl self up and energized at 5:30 AM before it's too hot lol. Luckily, being semi retired, I do get plenty of opportunity to have some "me" time, but as you mentioned, I need to focus on the quality aspect, so I think I will start meditating again now that I don't get outdoors in nature much this time of year. I did have a very lovely time at the resort floating in the pool surrounded by natural beauty, sipping cocktails, watching the storms come in the surrounding areas but not directly over us until the evenings . Of course all my lounging and indulging has had its effect on the scale, more than I was expecting , but worth it I e gotta admit. IPOM that I didn't let the scale discourage me and I went to the butcher's today and loaded up on healthy food for the rest of the week :)

Those pictures look amazing, Susan! Have a wonderful time!

Well done for walking, in the heat, Suzy, although it sounds like you might have overdone it! I'm wiped out when it's hot and can't seem to get myself to do anything much! Thankfully it's rarely hot here! It's a shame that you didn't have some instant weight loss to show for it! But I'm at my lightest first thing in the morning - to be honest, I think it's because of dehydrating slightly during the night, and I probably put the weight back on with my first cup of tea, but I still count it as my official weight.

Love those little peppers, Snoozie! They look lovely. I have sometimes seen them here, and I like them, but it feels like there is more work in preparing them (as if it's really much work to cut up a pepper of any size!). But I like your idea about using more than one for a variety in a stirfry. Well done on the walking.

Gail - I compromised; split the baby pepper in 2 and filled it with jalepno laughing cow cheese lol.. not quite the delishishness of your version but i'll let ya know how it is!

Susan - so glad you had a great time at the resort - and I don't think the "what" we do for ourselves matters; nature walk, lounging in a pool with a drink in hand - as long as it's the "me" time that's what counts!! I may actually check out the headspace app - as a sort of meditation thing I don't do well at regular meditation but I think its a great idea you want to get bak to taking a few minutes doing it for yourself again!

Vail - lol @ the weather.. I totally hear ya on the work chopping veg hence why I was thrilled t find these.. one slice in half is perfect lol! yep i'm all about the least amount of work!

Managed a 30 min walk at the lake this morning; going in a few hours early to bank some extra hours at work and then on vacay tomorrow.. woo to the hoo!

Suzy I think youre at the beach this week?? if so have a fabulous time and if I have the timing wrong.. have a great time when you go! :)

I am doing good with the better eating an portion control - I really want to be at my current logged weight by the end of the month which is what.. sunday I think ... well i'd like to be under but my goal is to get there so I can move on to finally getting there and moving on!!

have a great day Hatters!! Remember there's loads of healthy foods we love; we don't have to eat anything we don't want to at this age LOL.. and we can enjoy our food while we know it's doing our insides and outsides good!!

Glad you had an awesome trip. Isn't it lovely to see storms off in the distance, especially while your enjoying yourself. Knowing they won't hit your area for some time..

    Morning,
I updated my ticker today to reflect my current weight, since I could see that I was making some progress .

Didn't overeat, stuck to mainly lo carb .....I did have some sweets, a smidgeon of about 3!! spoonfuls of the homemade German chocolate icing....skipped the cupcake...trying to cut calories and sweet grams ya' know... ...Yes, It's a work in progress and not all at once... hopefully the sweets will fall off as soon as I get back into lo carb a little deeper.

I got in a lot of exercise yesterday..... 2 -10 minute bike rides. 1- 30 minute boot camp drill. and one session of the rebounding exercises on the Pilates reformer.
And my legs are feeling it!! but luckily no leg cramps that usually get me scrambling out of bed looking for something salty and the Aspercreme...so maybe they are adjusting.

Snoozie, great work with portion control. It is hard!! But I know you are in the right mindset to get it done!! I hope you make it to your goal by end of month.

I have been trying to get there ... using small plates , trying to leave space around each food group....'cause I know from experience I can get just about as much on a small plate as I can a large one. lol

Suzy, If you have already been on your beach vacation , I hope it was GREAT!! If not, I still hope it IS GREAT!

    Hello, to all I missed.

Thanks, Susan!! I have been so complacent for so long and I am glad that I finally decided to get back to it....cause I was gaining it all back ....so quickly.
  • Snooozie
    Snooozie Posts: 3,472 Member
Gail well done - I can totally relate to the complacency; its how I gained back the 30 lbs bit by bit... my experience "flunking maintenance" was a brutal learning curve on how quickly indeed those pounds creep up.. I distinctly remember when I had gained 5 lbs after i hit my goal weight... thinking ok its just 5 ... not a big deal... and when I finally had the guts to step on the scale again because I was deliberately ignoring it.. it was awful. And it was awfuller (yes I;ve decided that's a word!) getting back on track so kudos to you truly!!

I had an interesting experience last night; I had fish and chips for dinner (a deliberate choice on my part).. and I scarfed the whole thing down... afterwards I felt like crap.. it was a huge portion and my tummy was gurgly and I could barely get off the couch. I felt all bloaty and icky and realized I didn't really enjoy the dinner I simply scarfed it down... like it would disappear before I could get it all in. I don't know why; I could have taken my time and enjoyed a reasonable portion then left the rest but I was like a machine. I didn't regret choosing it, but I totally regretted later eating the whole thing and feeling like crap. Made me think this morning for sure that when I make a deliberate choice for something less healthy, I need to enjoy it and keep to the same portion size i'm striving for every meal, not just go crazy cause it's a "treat"... cause it sure didn't feel like a treat the rest of the night!

I'm on vacay now and plan to get in some more water classes and keep on aiming for better choices and smaller portions; had my lovely morning walk at the lake and today gonna tackle some floors and scrubbing that should burn off a few more cals lol. have a good weekend everyone!

Gail, I'm laughing here at you being good at fitting food on a small plate. I'm an expert! So funny! I even have a tiny, tiny plate about 2" across, and believe me, I can fit a lot on to that. It reminds me of the salad bars they used to have at Pizza Hut (maybe they still do, but I haven't been for years). I was there once and watching a woman filling her salad bowl - you were only allowed one trip to the bar, I think - and I couldn't believe how much she got on. She had used slices of cucumber all round the rim of the bowl to make it act like a bigger bowl and it was piled high and balanced. Goodness knows how she managed to eat it without it falling all over the table. But at least she got her money's worth! Anyway, it's great that you know yourself well and are not cheating yourself (something I'm prone to do!). Well done on your recent progress! It sounds like you have cracked it!

Interesting thoughts about scarfing down your fish and chips, Snoozie. I'm a fast eater, and I think sometimes the food doesn't even register on its way through! Something for me to work on. You're so right that if we're going to have treat we need to make the effort to enjoy it properly - lol!

I hope you all have a great weekend!
  • Snooozie
    Snooozie Posts: 3,472 Member
Vail that's exactly it - the food didn't register at all.. except after with the super uncomfortaableness! lol

darn those farmer's market sample plates..... I ate my way thru the cherries and peaches then of course ended up buying them - at least its good healthy fruit LOL. I am still 3/4 of a pound away from my posted weight - but i'm doing a show at the LAC tonite which will be a lot of standing and walking rather than sitting on my butt in front of the tv tonite - should be fun it's a large church's variety show lots of choirs and skits so right up my alley LOL.
    :o
now have to work off the blueberry scone that somehow managed to make its way into my peaches... !

Uh huh, it is awfuller! I know that word!! I kept ignoring the scales too, but the pants don't lie!

I find when I am a bit too hungry , I eat like I have only one second before the Titanic tips over and the life boats will leave without me if I haven't finished eating.

Vail, you had me ROTF almost when I read about the cucumbers around the bowl....I am jealous I never thought of that! LOL

Awesome news Snoozie!! 3/4 of a pund away is so exciting!!

Gail - loved the titanic reference and know exactly what you mean; I have a VERY bad habit of waiting to eat til I'm practically starving and as a result, eat 3x as much as I would if I made sure I had a good snack in between. :'( Vail loved the cucumber story too... I wish I was that brilliant, but knowing me I would have used potato chips instead of a veggie LOL

I got up at 4am for a nature call and hopped on the scale and I finally hit my current logged weight - only by an ounce mind you, so now the battle continues to move on to ditching this 25lb I regained - ounce by ounce if I have to but it WILL go!

The show at the LAC last night was all in Arabic LOL.. but the music and choirs were lovely so even though I didn't understand anything, it was a nice evening. And I only sat when my feet screamed here and there lol. I have been slacking off on my home physio stretches, especially the neck and shoulder ones and boy can I feel it today... so that's one goal to add in to NOT sluff them anymore. The sad part is I have no reason to ditch them I have plenty of time and it keeps me pain free so I dunno why I don't do them as I should - I guess its like the eating, I KNOW when i'm eating crap and I know better than to do it but... ah well progress is the goal, not perfection, right!

It was a beautiful morning at the lake today, gorgeous sunny day and a beautiful breeze.. I strolled more than hoofed it and stopped at several benches along the way as the view is different from each one.. and did the whole path which ends in the rhododendron gardens - they are past their prime by now but the scent coming off them as you go by is lovely and the path circles around them and back along the lake, so I got in a good hour stroll... even with the pauses... here's a few pics of one of my benches and the path going by the gardens. I tried to resize them smaller here's hoping it worked!

Hope everyone is doing well - Gail you have been ROCKING the exercise and the lower carb choices - well done you!! I hope suzy yu are at the beach enjoying some "self care" time, and Susan that you loved every minute of your getaway with Bob to the resort!

I have to decide whether to tackle some chores or see if there are any events around town that I can take in with this gorgeous weather... I suspect it won't take much to make me ditch the chores LOL.. Rock on hatters!

AWESOME!!!!! on hitting your Ticker #!

Don't bother sizing , I like the bigger pictures! ...just my two cents worth. I can see them better.
    That fence line is Gorgeous!!

I have tried doing some of the neck exercises you described, as my neck gives me fits ever since I gave myself something like whiplash...
......Ever had that moment when you are lying down , almost asleep and your whole body jerks? Well about 2 years ago, my body did that and my head jerked so violently that I remember thinking before I went to sleep that it was a good thing I didn't break my neck .
I have had sore stiff neck muscles ever since then. So your exercises sounded like they might help.

Yea, chores would not win out!!
    Have a wonderful day!!

by the way Vail - I keep meaning to ask you; I know you're in England - are you anywhere near the Isle of Man (as such?) more in the north I mean rather than south of England? Just curious as my ex brother in law is from the IOM and altho he still lives here, he's back there visiting at the moment. He flies into Manchester then over to the IOM so I was just curious ... I spent a month in England in .. 78 I think it was; at a friends place in Surrey and a few days in London but my parents travelled there a few times (my dad worked for an airline) and on their 25th anniversary they rented a houseboat with another couple and went down the Thames LOL...

It depends what you mean by near ... I was going to say I'm a long way away, but yes, I'm in the north (Yorkshire) rather than the south, but on the east side rather than the west! I've never been to the Isle of Man, although I've been to various places round about it in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland! I'm from Scotland originally.

Vail - my family on my dad' side are all from Scotland - and I hope to one day visit Ireland and Wales! I know you aren't exactly "close" lol.... just wondered whereabouts in England yu were and the IOM was kinda the closest reference I knew ha..

Gail here are the pics... they don't look like much in the way of stretches but honestly they make a difference.. I also included the pec stretch as my PT said often shoulder pain is actually from tense neck muscles. The stretches are easy to do even at and especially at your desk!

When you do the stretches, go only as far as its a comfortable - there should be NO pain, if there is back off slightly..

#1 I do standing - but you can do it laying down in bed if you want lol. you are basically just trying to touch your ear to your shoulder BUT not raise your shoulder - and hold the position for about 20 seconds... I alternate sides 10 on each

#2 look to your left, then try to bring your nose down to your armpit - you will feel the stretch in the side and back of your neck. Hold the stretch for 10-15 seconds.

    #3 ignore #3 - it's repeated below in the 3rd picture lol

    g1do6apg6lwx.jpg

This is the pec stretch - easy to do just need a wall - make sure your hand stays below elbow height and turn your whole body into the stretch.. Again no pain, back off slightly til you just feel the stretch across the top of your chest/front shoulder. So if you are standing with your left hand on the wall, you are turning your whole body to the right, stretching out the left front of the shoulder/top of chest

    tfgftspcojfy.jpg

This one is trying to touch your shoulder blades together while keeping your shoulders down. you are trying squeezing your shoulder blades together. It also addresses the neck muscles that come down your back

Hello Hatters! I just finished reading all your lovely posts to catch up on what I missed. I can't remember who all said what but...ditto on using the small plate! I started doing this when someone mentioned it and now I've got to stop piling it so high that it's the same as using a large plate! Beautiful photos of your walk Snoozie! I've been trying to remember to do all those neck stretches but fell off a bit while at the beach. I went for a massage the Monday before my vacay and she said my upper back and neck weren't as tight. Congrats to those who are seeing progress! Good for you! Awesome news!

I had my good and bad moments at the beach. I'm reluctant to get back on the scale. I'm going to bite the bullet and do it tomorrow morning. I'm so ready for my life to calm down a bit. My nephew is in town and we're going to dinner tonight and a Braves baseball game tomorrow. I'm driving to Mississippi on Wednesday to see more family and coming home Saturday. My oldest sister will then be visiting until Monday. I'm really really hoping that I'll have the rest of August and all of September to concentrate on me and getting in a bit better shape before our hike the first week of October then our trip to Maine the second week. This entire year has been one thing after another and I'm absolutely no closer to my goal than I was on January first. Ugh!!!!!

I had a wonderful time at the beach though and don't regret anything. We had great weather and good company!

No loss to mention, but I felt good about the weekend...no mindless munching. I kept busy washing up and cleaning in the kitchen.

Have yourselves a great day! You deserve it!

Vail- didn't realize you lived in England . That's awesome. My lineage is from wales and Ireland.

Suzy- welcome home , for a little while anyway ! Sounds like you are really getting around . While I'm envious of your travels, I hear you about it making it so hard to stay on program.

Gail- great job on your mindfulness this past weekend :)

Snooozie - love all the pretty photos. I don't know how you are able to downsize them- I've tried and can't seem to make it work anymore - any tips ? Thanks for posting the neck exercises , too. I'll give them a try. I have serious neck injuries from an awful car accident in 1994, so always open for tips. I know what you mean about slacking off for no reason with things you know you should do. I've been doing that lately with taking my vitamins, which is awful! Sounds like you are doing great with the war of the scales, though.Yipee for you !!!!

It has been a crazy week here in the old Puebla for me. While the weather has been fantastic with a terrific monsoon season cooling everything down ( it was actually on 75 degrees the other day ! ) , health issues have been an issue. I believe my virus is now a sinus infection with a constant cough, and my poor hubby is in the hospital. He has been dealing with a kidney stone since April and was scheduled to get it blasted on Thursday. Luckily he was not having the severe pain associated with it, but Friday evening he started feeling awful and bit Saturday morning he had a fever and chills so I took him to the ER. They admitted him and he is still there. He has started to feel somewhat better as of today, so he will be released Tuesday or Wednesday. Then I have to take him to a different hospital on a Thursday to get the stone blasted which will cause the stone to break up into smaller pieces which he will be able to very painfully pass over the next few days after the procedure. I'm telling you, this aging ain't for Sissies, that's for sure !!!
On the bright side, I lost the 2 pounds gained from my lovely resort weekend plus additional weight which takes me back to even lower than my ticker weight. Guess it's from the sinus infection and stress, but heck, I'll take it !!!!

Susan - oh NO on poor hubby!! i'm so sorry to hear he had to be hospitalized, and as for the kidney stone, even when blasted into bits I believe they term the pain "exquisite agony" - I will keep my fingers crossed he will get released in the next day or two and that the blasting makes em miniscule for when they do have to pass...

Awesome NEWS ON getting even below ticker weight... woo to the hoo!! sorry you had to get it from sinus and stress... I remember you had to go on some serious antibiotics last time u had a sinus thingie that wouldn't go away... please make sure you take care of yourself too!

Suzy.. I am thrilled you had such a great time at the beach.. holy hell your sched for the next few weeks tho exhausts me just thinking about it!!! lol I know what you mean about not wanting to get on the scale, but just my two cents worth, do it now.. I avoided it for too long and ended up with 25 lbs back... even with all the company and travel you have coming up, you can still just pick one or two small goals every day... push the water or aim for at least 2 veggies every day ... something easily doable that is good for you; that way you wont feel like you wont be able to look after YOU during the upcoming hectic time... and you wont have to spend the whole time worrying about what you're eating for dinner or lunch or on the road.. you can just enjoy yourself the rest of the day if you just stick to one or 2 smaller goals each day as you go... you'll also have a head start on getting prepped for the big hike that way? just a thought...

If the stretches are any use to anyone excellent ! :) I honestly find they help big time!

Gail congrats on having a good weekend and avoiding the mindless munching - cleaning wouldn't be my first option for that of course LOLOL.. but hey if it works go for it.. you can come clean my place if you need more to keep you from munching?? lol

It was a stunning day here and there's rain in the forecast the rest of the week, so after my walk at the lake I DECIDED to ditch the home chores, and hopped in the car and drove to a little town called Port Dover.. about 1.5 hrs away on Lake Erie.. they have a beach and little shops and I've never been.. and when I arrived I saw a sailing boat tour across the street... so I ran over and there was a boat just leaving - so on I hopped LOL... it was a beautiful sailboat and it was just about an hour out on the water.... just lovely then wandered the town a bit then headed home... and I didn't buy one munchies or ice cream or nothing .. except a coffee for the drive home LOL...i'll throw up a pic of me and the boat (it was taken after the sail so i'm a little windblown!) but it was a fab day and definitely up there in the "self care" moment for me hahaha...

Oh susan... I opened the pic in PAINT ... then clicked the resize button to 50%, then saved the resized pic and posted that for the smaller ones :) these are not resized tho!

    iq9ww3q1gy42.jpg

The boat was lovely and there were only 6 of us on it.... and they put up the sails as soon as we left the dock and were able to sail the whole time with just the sails no motor... soooo lovely!!
