2017--This Year is Our Year!!!

I lost a pound last week. I'm now down 35 pounds from my all-time high. This is almost exactly the weight I was last year at this time. I quit weighing at that point. I'm absolutely determined not to do that this year.
I'm watching the 10-year update on My 600-lb Life Melissa and Ashley. They're both struggling. I guess we're not the only ones.0 -
Maryanne--Congrats! You will not quit weighing!!!! If we have to remind you, you will not quit weighing!! Note to self---I will not quit weighing or logging food.0
-
Maryanne, that's a big accomplishment. Keep doing what your are doing. It's working. And we'll remind you to weight at least once a week if oyu don't report your results yourself. Great job.0

Good job, Maryanne!0

You have found the plan that works for you, now you just have to keep working the plan!
I'm still trying to figure out my plan, but I'm working on it.
I made a really good and easy dinner tonight. We both really liked it. I used chicken tenders, zucchini, red onion, and baby carrots, but the recipe said to use broccoli, carrots, and cherry tomatoes. I didn't have broccoli or tomatoes on hand, so I subbed in what I had and it was delicious. All you do is combine equal parts of fat free Zesty Italian dressing and Balsamic Vinegar (2/3 cup of each was the amount, but I thought it was quite a lot more than you needed) and pour about half of that over about a pound and a half of chicken tenders. Let that marinate for 30 minutes to 6 hours. In the meantime, cut up your veggies and pour a little of the remaining marinade over them then toss to coat. I added salt and pepper as well. Spread them out on a sheet pan that is sprayed with Pam (I lined mine with foil first), then bake at 400 degrees for about 10-15 minutes. Make room on the sheet and add the chicken and bake for about 7-15 minutes more, depending on the thickness of the chicken (I baked mine the full 15 minutes). Serve over rice or quinoa, and heat the remaining marinade to use as a sauce. DH really liked it and so did I, especially the minimal amount of prep time and easy clean up!0 -
Pam - that sounds really good! I'm a fan of the new no stick foil.
I wonder if I could get DH to eat spiralized vegetables instead of spaghetti in the cherry tomato recipe. All the stores here sell them now. I know I could eat those and give him spaghetti but I LOVE spaghetti and I think that's one thing I'm not willing to watch him eat while I don't. There aren't a lot of those but there are a few.0 -

Yes, reminders are good! When I look back at last year and see that I just stopped weighing I can't help but wonder why the heck....... I honestly don't remember.0 -

I weighed in this morning; still haven't lost the weight I gained during the colonoscopy prep. Is it what I'm eating or the reality that I haven't made a trip to the bathroom for a bm since the colonoscopy. Oh well! I logged my breakfast of the Special K breakfast sandwich.0

Probably the latter!!0 -
I had an endocrinologist appointment today. The good news is my thyroid cysts didn't do one of their growth spurts this time so no biopsy. YEAH! Go back in 9 months.
Other good news was my blood pressure was pretty good (for someone with white coat hypertension).
I took the opportunity to give her a copy of my last labs, including the 94 fasting blood sugar and 5.7 A1C and soliciting her advice. She told me that the A1C test was originally not intended as diagnostic but rather was developed as a tool to help monitor already diagnosed diabetics. It tests the level of sugar attached to the outside of your red blood cells in the last 3 months. Weird! So if you're someone whose red cells don't live exactly 3 months your results can be screwy. The A1C was first used as diagnostic in third world countries where they can't realistically get fasting blood sugars (if you have to walk a couple hours to the clinic, odds are you won't be fasting). Anyway she agrees I'm borderline, stick to the diet and in her opinion - most important - exercise at least 150 minutes a week. And it can't hurt to cut way back on carbohydrates like breakfast muffins. So keep dieting and anything I learned from NS about the GI index can't hurt (like brown rice and sweet potatoes). And get on the treadmill. Got my marching orders (pun intended)!0 -
Maryanne--Good news on the thyroid and BP. Now, to exercise 150 minutes a week, which is 30 minutes a day for 5 days.
I'm watching "Facing the Fat" streamed from Amazon. It is a documentary of an obese man who decided to fast for 55 days while drinking only water. I've just started it but he had medical tests, etc. for tracking as he goes through the 55 days.0 -
Maryanne, maybe you could mix some of the spiralized veggies into DH's spaghetti. If he has no objection to eating them, gradually increase the veggies and decrease the spaghetti. Eventually, you'll both be eating 100% veggies. He'll have adapted and maybe even gotten to like them better. That's an interesting explanation of the A1C test. I knew it involved 3 months but that's all I knew about it.
Pam, what's the brand name of the fat free zesty Italian dressing? The recipe sounds like something I'd make.
Jean, I can't imagine drinking just water for 55 days. Does he go back to food on day 56?
I got the permanent crown yesterday. Hopefully that's the end of dental work other than cleanings for a while. It was 90 degrees in CT compared with 73 on the Cape. We hit a half hour of downpours on the way home. We pulled into a Walmart parking lot to wait it out. As we got a few miles down the road, we were rewarded by a lovely rainbow.0 -
Helene, I think the brand I used was Kraft, but it could also have been a store brand. Unfortunately, I finished off the bottle and the trash has already been collected, so I can't say for sure. I think any brand would be fine. I really liked that recipe and it is very adaptable to whatever veggies you like or have on hand. The rice or quinoa it's served over is totally optional, but we enjoyed it over rice with a little of the left over marinade over it.
I had lunch today with my friend whose husband was so sick earlier this year. He has been doing pretty well recently, but awoke around 2:30 am Monday throwing up. He continued to be sick for several hours and his blood sugar got very high. At 11:30 she called 911 and he was transported to the hospital where they ran lots of tests and finally decided he had pneumonia and was admitted. Shortly after getting to his room he fell and hit his head, which required more tests and a cat scan to make sure there was no bleeding because he is on a blood thinner. Fortunately there did not appear to be any damage from the fall. Now they are waiting to find out if the pneumonia is viral or bacterial as that will impact how long his stay inpatient will be. She's in good spirits, but I know this was a scary episode for them.0 -
Helene - that's a good idea about mixing in the vegetables. Would cut the calories for sure.
Pam - that had to be incredibly scary for your friend. As we've gotten older, I can't help but look back on what's happened with elderly parents and neighbors and wonder what's in our future.
I expressed my concern to the endocrinologist about weight post thyroid removal (which we assume will have to happen at some point). She thinks it shouldn't be a big issue as they're pretty good at replacing the thyroid function with medications.
I have a dentist appointment this morning. I should be looking for a new dentist for 2 reasons: (1) this one moved farther away the minute the founder retired and (2) they aren't a participating Blue Cross dentist so the premiums I pay Blue Cross aren't as valuable as they could be. I even know where I should try. Why haven't I done anything? (1) I'm a true dental phobic and I know this place will cater to me and (2) I love my long term hygienist and (3) I used to hate it when they gave me a different hygienist every time and they each had their own procedures they wanted me to follow (I actually finally complained that they didn't seem to know what worked since they all said something different - I think I worded it a little more politely).

Maryanne--Decisions, decisions!
Another day of a heat index over 100 with temps in upper 90s. I'll take this kind of weather over the cold snowy stuff any day.
The check up went well; no cancer seen. Go back in 6 months.0 -

Love that cartoon. Maryanne, I totally understand about sticking with the dentist you know. I've been driving back and forth 150 miles each way to stay with my dental practice. I stopped my dental because the dentist was out of network and the policy paid such a small fraction. I decided I was better off saving the premium money and using it directly for the dental bills. I've been with the practice since I was 12. I too have a favorite hygienist too. I figure I only make the drive a few times a year so it's not a burden. I have a dentist in FL too from when I had a dental emergency. She's a good 40 minute drive away. I'm okay with that as well.
Jean..That's wonderful they didn't find any cancer. You must be pretty relieved.
Pam, I'm a bit surprised the hospital let your friend's husband get up without a staff person's assistance. DH has never had a fall but he a a risk of fall band the whole time he was there. Part of that was probably age related and staff caution. He had to ring if he needed to use the bathroom. A nurse or aide would come in and take his arm and walk him into the bathroom. She's wait and escort him back to bed. That may have been what your friend's husband was supposed to do. Not all patient's follow the rules. It's amazing that he didn't cause serious damage to himself. Let's hope the rest of his recovery is uneventful.0 -
Helene--The guy on the water fast made it but shortly before that he discovered a world's record for doing that and decided to surpass it in order to get his name in the book. A follow up on it indicated the book wouldn't honor the record he set as it was evident such a listing might encourage others to do the same. He supposedly gained any weight lost back. He has a Facebook page in which he is documenting a healthier approach to losing weight.0
-
Smart move to not recognize that record. All kinds of crazies would endanger their health to get that record. It was too hot to do anything today. I'm having a girls night tonight. Seeing a play with 2 friends. Hopefully the theater's AC works well.0
-
Helene - I hope you had fun at girls' night? What was the movie?
(That would be me in the hospital; getting up even though told not to.)
Jean - great great news on the test results!!!!!
Pretty quiet around here. I fed the colonies this morning, did a quick grocery store run. Now I'm alternating chores and work.
To keep DH occupied I gave him my newspapers.com login info. I feel like a teacher trying to keep kids quiet during study hall.
I'm going to try this for supper. http://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/cherry-tomato-pizza-margherita I did it once last year as I recall. I'm going to add a little pizza sauce under the cheese and I didn't buy fennel seeds or red pepper.
DH had trouble with tomato plants this spring and ended up buying some at Home Depot. One of them is producing the strangest tomatoes we ever saw. Hard little balls - bigger than cherry tomatoes. I finally cut one open. They look sort of like a pepper inside. Really thick skin, all the "guts" in a little ball like a mini skinned tomato. Of course he can't remember what the name of the plant was so we don't know how to avoid it.

Nothing new here. High heat, high humidity and storms.
Maryanne--Those are odd tomatoes. I guess there is something to be said about putting one of those identifying stakes with the tomato plant.0 -
Now DH says there probably is an identifying tag in the ground. Hmm..... I suggested he removed the plant to the compost pile and dig up the identifying tag so we can avoid it!!!!0
-
Dark overcast skies for today; the rain is getting old.
MFP is fibbing. It said based upon the food I was logging I would be a certain weight by the end of the month. I just lost the weight I gained for the colonoscopy so I am back to what I had lost the first week of this month. It just isn't budging.
Maryanne--Make a refrigerator magnet out of the nasty plant stake so you won't forget it when you go to buy again.0 -
My scale is being uncooperative as well. I've gained and lost the same pound for the past several days, even though I am really trying to watch the portion sizes and calories. Very frustrating.
We had rain most of the night last night, which always makes DH very happy since he doesn't have to water the yard for a day or two. I like it if it cools us off, but since it is now sunny I fear it only raised the humidity so it will be like a sauna outside today. Luckily, I don't plan to anywhere so I can stay inside and enjoy my air conditioned house.
Nothing much going on around here at the moment. My friend's husband may be discharged from the hospital today. The final diagnosis he was given was viral pneumonia and the treatment was a 7-day course of IV antibiotics, followed by oral antibiotics at home. They were very relieved as there was a concern that the vein graft where he receives his dialysis treatments might have become infected, but this proved not to be the case. His veins are in horrible shape and this graft is pretty much the last place they can use, so they are trying to take very good care of it.0 -
Jean and Pam - sorry for the frustration!
DH is now saying these tomatoes were labelled as Beefsteak. Well, if they were they were sadly mislabelled!
Well, I promised myself weighing every week so I did. Gained 1/2 pound. Too many experimental dishes last week I think and also a few days of only mentally doing my spreadsheet - not putting it on paper. First thing this morning I did a spreadsheet for today!!!
I'm watching old My 600-lb Life on the Kindle Fire while walking on the treadmill. I guess the old saying's true - there's always someone worse off than me.0 -
Had an appointment with a gastroenterologist (spell check thinks that's wrong?) today. Usually my stomach symptoms subside when I'm sticking to the diet but I've had some real nausea issues recently. He suspects it's all part and parcel of acid reflux but wants to redo an endoscopy (I had one in 2011). He can do it Thursday before he leaves for vacation. Such fun! (Actually that test isn't too bad).0
-
Maryanne, I saw an article recently that said if you are trying to grow tomatoes but they aren't doing well, you need to make sure not to plant them again in the same spot in the garden. I don't recall the specifics, but the article recommended moving plants around so that the same things don't get planted in the same places year after year. I guess it's similar to the reasoning behind crop rotation that farmers adhere to.0
-
Pam - DH tries to do that but on a small lot like ours it's hard to do. Maybe we should take a year off everything but the container plants. Have to try to find a time to mention that in passing. LOL!
