@wobblemcwobbleface yes as your weight reduces the calories will reflect that and will reduce :/ from memory I think it automatically reduces it when you change your weight, but I'm sure someone else will confirm that - I've been in maintenance so long I kinda forget the gist of it. It will never reduce to less than 1200 though because that is the least recommended amount of cals. But as you get nearer to goal weight, i.e within 20lbs then you can change it to 0.5lb a week and you'll feel not so bad cos automatically you will get some extra cals that way - plus it gets you in the mindset for maintaining.

Just correcting this a little, it's 1500 minimum for a male (Wobble is a man) 1200 is the minimum for females.

Your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) which is basically your calorie burn for the day/maintenance including exercise will reduce as you get closer to goal, not sure of your height but even a relatively average height fella at your weight/age would have a TDEE of approximately 2197 if sedentary. If changing that to your goal weight it would then reduce to 2044, so it's not a massive difference.

As @LivingtheLeanDream says as you get closer to your goal, you'll want to start reducing your deficit anyway and then move to maintenance. I don't think it does it automatically any more but does perhaps prompt you to review it after every 10lbs loss (I believe)

Many thanks all (I am 5ft.10 BTW) - I was rather getting used to the 1800 cals. I had but guess it has to reduce for this to work. I will look into the alternatives suggested above once I am nearer the first (he says rather hopefully) target weight. I agree some of the exercise cals. you get back are a bit random - not so sure about the just walking around day to day (I don't get long walks in with dog to the left he is rather old and bumbles along but lovely, the other lab we have is a lot younger lively (and brighter) and I can do long works with her)

I am going to aim for my target and see what is what and go from there. I don't like the idea of maintaining, it seems like a never ending diet but guess that is really what this ultimately is about, well I am hoping by target weight time I will be able to spot good food and bad from 20 paces so this will be second nature (yeh like I don't already know that a hamburger, chips and any form of fatty delicious fried food, chocolate, Haribos and any other fizzy sweet is not good for you) ( think I might be missing them too much....)

This diet lark is not all it is cracked up to be but hey after a lifetime of not eating properly and looking after myself it is time I got with the programme - I am not getting any younger....

Thanks for all your feedback, it really helps with some support out there as to date I have not got my head around this at all. I am at present enjoying the journey (well I am trying to keep telling myself that) and enjoying exercising more, hence the challenges I have this year. I am also trying do some weights to get a bit stronger generally, my core is really poor and my back has not been great and hopefully put a bit of muscle (somewhere , perhaps under the bingos ?) on to help with the weight loss (so far looking at the muscle bound lot in the gym yours truly is not looking the part, but, at least I am invisible in there)

Back from my Jollydays in Denmark, it was great fun and I am actually a little down in my weight this morning unexpectedly as didn't log at all over the weekend.

    How is everyone's week going?

@wobblemcwobbleface no such thing as good or bad food, all that you mentioned above is only bad for you if you're eating so much of it that you're not able to get the micronutrition you need in the rest of your diet without going over your maintenance/calorie goal.

This illustrates that mindset quite well:

I saw you had lost weight! how fab is that! must have been all that walking  glad you had a great time, and your weight loss also shows that you must instinctively know how to not overeat  or else you made better choices with food

btw thats a great comparison above, people mostly don't get the idea of it all -we do cos we count calories. I can't tell you the amount of times my DIL will say to me 'oh I've been naughty this week' and how has she been naughty: she ate half a scone one day and had a piece of cake! but I try to explain, she loses weight because she is eating less than she burns...it hasn't sunk in ...yet!

Nice to have you back Ang x

Yeah I think it was a combination of both, because there was a lot of cake over the weekend, Boyfriend's sister made a fantastic Orange/Seed cake and some Banana Bread *drool*

But we did walk a lot and most of our meals were veg and meat.

    the cakes sound fab

I haven't ever come back from holidays having lost weight LOL, I usually gain 1 to 2lbs and it takes me the following month getting it off again... I gain quickly and lose dead slowly.

I am normally the same but that's usually because I'm eating out, whereas we were eating with his family so it was home cooked meals and they're quite health conscious.

Yeah that's probably it, home cooked is always the lower calorie/lower portion meal.

btw I got back to seeing 127.7 again, it was 3 months coming and all week I've stayed low so its looking like I'll see another drop... it seems to take me ages seeing true loss but its good to be seeing it again.

Hi all. I finally got below 250 today so I’m excited. Still much too heavy but I haven’t seen this number in a very long time. I had a plateau for a while but I’m 4lbs down today, thankfully.

Glad you had a good time, Ang. I’m off to London next weekend and am terrified of the flight...more specifically, the airport. Well I’m also worried I may need a seat belt extender — I’ve never had that happen before but the anxiety about the possibility is real. :o

Not sure how you carry your weight but even when I was around 255lb (47" hips) I didn't need an extender and hey even if you do it's not the end of the world, the flight won't be too long, it's an hour and a half tops and you only need wear the seatbelt for take off and landing.

Which airport are you flying into?

Yeah I know a few folk who use it, my boyfriend included. I've actually been drinking a lot less since I moved to Ireland

Flying into City Airport. It’s the whole embarrassment factor that I’m dreading. I hate the thought of having to tell the steward that I need an extension lol. I’m hoping the seatbelts are similar in size to the ones on megabius gold because even at my biggest, they still fastened (just) so it would be good if that were the case.

Most seat belts will do up to 47" or there abouts. They will be used to people asking for them and will be pretty discreet. Don't let it get you down, even if it does end up you need one, just use it as motivation to keep going with your fantastic progress!

That’s what I’m telling myself. It’s no big deal really but I just think it would be humiliating. But, there’s no way of getting out of going so I’ll just have to grin and bear it. Like you said, I can always use the humiliation as a motivator lol.

thanks for the reminder- Interesting to remember good food v bad food is not sometimes what it seems. We are so programmed here, we eat something "nice" then feel guilty so they become bad - I do like MD breakfasts....

I have a weeks holiday coming up in the next couple of weeks ( can't wait ) but as it is all inclusive it will be a challenge not to turn into the cookie monster- my "plan" is to eat mainly protein and salad and try and cut down on the carbs and the amount consumed as well as get off my sunbed and do some exercise ( does turning oneself over on the sunbed count I ask ?) - well that is the plan - we shall see how that one pans out but hey need to enjoy myself as well so it will sort of be what it is really

Not exercise but it will certainly keep you away from the all-inclusive buffet if you're sunbathing

Where are you off to @wobblemcwobbleface ?

April will be my first month not travelling so I am kind of looking forward to a whole month of routine.

On this note, what are you most looking forward to in 2019 (whether it be weight loss related or not or both)?
    • For me regarding weight loss, I am looking forward to clearing out the Size 18 & 20 stuff out of my wardrobe and buying more flattering stuff, I point blank refuse to buy a lot of clothes at the moment (although bought some stuff that will fit at my goal weight). Also looking forward to winning my HealthyWage bet - 209 days to go and counting.
    • Non-weight loss really looking forward to heading to Spain in July and Romania in August, this is the first year in many when I have not used all of my holiday entitlement to travel back and forth to the UK to see family and friends. I've claimed 2019 for myself and I am making the most of it. I have one catch up in the UK for the Army vs Navy rugby game in Twickenham in May, but otherwise have been to Gran Canaria, Czech Republic & Denmark already and after Spain and Romania I am contemplating squeezing a couple more city breaks in to maybe Italy and Croatia.

I’m not entirely sure but I’d love to be able to afford a trip abroad at some point but that’s doubtful since my priority, once I have lost enough weight is to have a breast reduction, which I’ll be getting privately so will be a couple of grand. I’m hoping that will be in 2019.

Other than that, finishing up this college course and possibly carrying on or starting up a new business (I’ll be doing the business regardless though).

I’d like to have reached 100lbs lost by the end of the year but it often goes slower than expected. Ideally I’d like to reach that by summer but we’ll see. I’m not going to be drastic — I’m just going to give it time. I’ve adjusted well to eating less so that’s the main thing.

    :)

Romania , sounds interesting - isn't that Dracula country? supposed to be really nice

I am off to Fuerteventura, which it says is a balmy 23C ( yay ) so great news, really looking forward to it, I struggle with the dark gloom of winter and going for too long without a break, I think this has got worse as I have got older, as has the ability to cope with stress (it does catch up on you) - the slight fly in the ointment with the hols is that I am flying on the 30 March so a week Saturday (16 hours after Brexit happens (well perhaps),.....what could possibly go wrong here) - (can't get the emoji face thing to work but insert smiley face with shades...)
