Runners that need some nutritional accountability

Well. I've been trying to get back on track, ya know. So I've been trying to weigh daily and today I hit the oh *kitten* weight. *Sigh*.
I had a burger today, but it's all I'm having. It's time to cut those calories back.3 -
LOL! Garmin says that I burned nearly 6500 calories. I probably ate half of that on the course as I was trying for 250 to 300 calories per hour but tapered off towards the end.
On the way home from the race I stopped at Wendy's to get two big bowls of chili and a burger. Surprisingly I could only finished the burger and one bowl of chili.
I expected to hunger to really hit yesterday but it never came. My wife did make some awesome apple crisp and I put a fair dent in that. She also bought some vanilla bourbon ice cream which is fantastic but I only eat one spoonful at a time to make it last.
Currently my weight is up but that always happens after long runs as my body recovers.

@7lenny7 Great distance there....and calorie burn. Sometimes, I'm less hungry after a run than I am before I go. It is good to know that your weight goes up after a long run. I'll keep that in mind, if I ever do one. LOL I think I would be super frustrated if I ran 46 miles and gained weight!0
-
@7lenny7 - I want to know about the vanilla bourbon ice cream and where I can get some? Not a big ice cream fan but that sounds so good! I would have my spoonful with the apple crisp!
@elise4270 - hope today was a better day for you!2 -

@shanaber, here it is!
That I eat all alone. For the apple crisp I use this

I'm on a mission to create some space in our upright freezer. When we had three kids at home I got in the habit of stocking up on food when there were good sales, particularly meat. And there's all the wild game in there. Now that we're down to one kid at home, the food is starting to get old. Monday night I browned some ground venison, seasoning it with chili seasoning thinking I'd make chili, but I've been eating it like popcorn. A bit dry, but not bad, and a great source of protein.
I pulled out a package of season pork loin steaks to thaw out. Will grill those tonight.
So much more to use up though. Time for roasts, chili, soups, curries, and grilling!
I suppose I should use up the processed frozen potato products my wife buys too. I never rarely like those but she keeps buying them and I continue to eat the leftovers because that's what I do. Hopefully when the boy leaves for college she'll stop buying the frozen french fries and tater tots.2 -
Mmmmm - tater tots! I haven't had those in years!
I really want to cook 'fall' foods... roasts, chili, spaghetti, etc... as well as baking some harvest bread. But, it is way too hot again. I think it may hit 100 today. High was supposed to be 90 but we have already blown past that. I don't even want to turn on the oven. I am going to grill some chicken or get dh to do it outside on the grill. Then we can have it for lunches, salads or dinner. Tonight is leftover baked chicken in mushroom gravy that I made on Monday before it got hot.3 -
I think my eating is a little more under control. Dh and I went out for dinner. He found out his cholesterol went from 216 to 264 in 2-3 months, so I guess we need to do better. We still went out and had bbq, but had the chicken instead. Baby steps. We went to rib crib, not the best place for bbq. But they added the calories to their menu. Ya, wow. we use to get the loaded spuds and I guessed they were prob 800-1000 calories. Nah, 1700. The salad they offered was 1200. I bet anyone that wants to lose weight would succeed if they just didn’t eat out or pre made food. That simple. No magic macros or special days, just eat at home and fix it yourself. No wonder America is fat.2

C’mon. Where is everyone?
The scale is down or, I suspect trending down. I haven’t logged it in the app. It might not be so and could ruin my day. It be like stock market depression for the off work, broken housewife. So I’m trying to hold steady and ride the post op calorie demand downwards.
Schlotskyz today.
Veggie sandwich with avocado and bacon.
This post has kept Schlotsky's on my mind ever since. I had a BOGO coupon for medium sandwiches so I went there yesterday to get sandwiches for DW and I before my son's high school soccer game (a 5-1 victory which put them in the section finals!). Most sandwiches were in the 750+ calorie range, including my favorite the original so I got the turkey guac and smoked turkey sandwhiches, which were each in the 500's. Good, but not as good at the original.

Ya, that original is pretty good. We’re supposed to get a schlotzskys here, but I haven’t seen ant evidence yet. I figured if I splurged with bacon, it’d off set “not the original “.1 -
So what is it about these foods that make them so high in calories? Salads at Schlotsky's - salad dressing? I mean c'mon there can't be much else in it to drive the calories up??
Sandwiches at 750+ is that mayo and spreads, cheese or what?
We occasionally go to subway and I get a turkey sandwich, even adding avocado at home (can't stand their guac) it is still under 300 calories. I don't use mayo or any sauces and I typically don't have cheese but even if I did it wouldn't come close to 750 calories...
I find it crazy that the calorie values are so high and really would like to see a breakdown of what is driving it.1 -
I am back home from Portland. @shanaber - you were right - it is a foodie town!
I was able to run every morning through the city and once on a trail. The temps were just amazing! It was always between 45-49 in the morning and would get up to around 59-61 each day. It did not rain once! My daughter lives in a great area and it was just so nice walking around, hanging out and eating amazing meals. I think my favorite meal was at a Lebanese restaurant. We ate well! I am up 3 pounds in my danger zone! But it will drop off by next week this time since I will be back on my normal routine. I tried to stop myself before I was full at each meal and did a pretty good job I think. I read something about how we should stop eating at 80% full -- not that I have a gauge that I can read on fullness! There was a lot of wine drinking as well which I am sure didn't help!
One thing I thought about as I got back to Orlando - I don't remember seeing one chain restaurant in Portland (other than fast food). Here it is all Bahama Breeze, Olive Garden, Outback, CheeseCake Factory, Red Lobster, and tons more, (lots of Darden restaurants since their headquarters are here and we are the testing ground with all the tourists).
@7lenny7 - LOL you couldn't get Schlotskys off the mind. I know what you mean - we are supposed to be helping each other here and I find myself having food envy! @shanaber - I don't get the high calories on those sandwiches either. Sometimes I think the calories must be way too low and other times too high. I do like that chains are posting the calories because it does help keep us aware. It certainly has changed my ordering!
In shoe news, although my daughter is working at Nike she said the employee store isn't as good as the Nike Community store, - so we went to the Community store and I picked up a pair of Nike running shoes for $33. I bought a second pair the following day for $43 (I had a birthday coupon that I used the first day). I needed to replace one pair in my running repertoire so it worked out well. I am stashing the second pair until I need them. This made me think of @7lenny7 with you massive stashing of shoes you had a few years ago. I assume you still do!2 -

@ddmom0811 welcome back! Portland is such oddball town, in a good way. Once we retire (5 to 7 years from now) I want to go there every year to visit my sister, run a trail ultra and eat. And beer.
I tried to find the calorie breakdown for Schlotzky's but wasn't able to. Some places will tell you what each ingredient contributes so it's easier to skinny down a sandwich. At Wendy's I like to get the Grilled Chicken Go Wrap, hold the honey mustard, add yellow mustard for only 230 calories. I wouldn't know to do that if not for their detailed calorie breakdown online.
Running shoes...I think I've been doing good. I don't remember what my peak was but I "down" to just 17 pair. 10 pair in rotation (4 road/6 trail) and 7 in reserve (3 road/4 trail). One pair of road shoes is past my nominal mileage limit and may be tossed soon. Average cost $60

I find it crazy that the calorie values are so high and really would like to see a breakdown of what is driving it.
I think the bread and luncheon type meats, (ham, salami- high fat meats), cheese... I think the original has mustard so no cals there... I checked their web site. Looks like the bread alone for a small sandwich is at least 300 calories. I always get a med and have been known to snarf a large. So, 300 calories is a hearty start. I make a point to buy 60 calorie per slice bread. The dressings are a huge calorie hit. I don’t add any or typically use them, but the site shows more than 400 calories if you add blue cheese or Caesar. Say you go lite, other than mustard the fat free raspberry is 100. (Per 3 oz). So ya, dang already ate 5-6 miles of running just in bread and dressing!
Arby’s has a decent turkey sandwich and it’s 700 calories. At home, no way you’re making a 700 calorie sandwich unless it bacon avocado and mayo, shaggy style!
I can’t/shouldn’t be eating these lunch meat sandwiches anyway. But it looks like my veggie, isn’t a great choice. And @shanaber I have no idea how they make a salad such a poor choice. I suspect the rib crib salad added fatty meats and dressing. I did subway salads for a while until the counter lady complained that they take a long time to make... I mean you get paid for your time? It’s not THAT much longer. So I switched to chick fil a salads. They are okay and 200-300 calories. And no one complained about me being there.
Food today
No plans as of yet. I should put something in the IP. We buy chicken thighs because they taste better than breast meat, guess I may have to give up some of my animal fats for dh. We’ll see. So let’s pretend a curry today, chicken on the side.
Fall break so I get to clean and get caught up on course work! Yay! I should hear any minute, any day now... c’mon... that I did or didn’t make the cut to the bsn program. I think I’m in, dh thinks I’m in... but I KNOW to prepare for what I don’t expect. So, I’m in that “!,,,#&$*@🤢😩&$😶$%🤪=+!🥺,!}” state, where I’m on edge waiting, trying not to lose focus on ...?.. ? Forward.
Challenge: next time you eat out, find the worst thing on the menu that isn’t a dessert. What’s really in the choices you make outside of the house?0 -
Butternut squash in the instant pot last night...yum!!!
That and about 12 ounces of ground venison, doused in barbecue sauce made up my dinner.
I'm trying to go back to my old strategy of eating veggies, and lots of them, first at mealtime.
@Elise4270 that's the nutrition menu I found before, but it doesn't give the breakdown by ingredient the way some fast food places do. For instance, Subway allows you to click on a particular sandwich, pick your toppings and tells you the resulting calorie hit.

A lot of it is common sense, - veggies are basically calorie free, mayonnaise and ranch are big hits, but I like to see the numbers.

I was reading a BuzzFeed of what Subway employees get annoyed when customers order. It's usually some random weird customer requests but one was "order a chopped salad". UM that's on your menu. You can't complain that someone orders something ON YOUR MENU!3 -

ha! I struggle to find a Subway worker who understand what "just one stripe of spicy mustard". They usually soak it with 4 or 5.
My daughter was a server for years. She'd get so mad at me when we'd go to a restaurant just before their kitchen closed. "Dad! You're going to make them mad!!, they want to clean up and get out of there!!" Really? Imagine the absurdity of ordering food within the advertised hours of business! If they want to quit taking orders at 9:50 instead of 10:00, maybe they should change their hours?

We sometimes arrive about 30-45 minutes before close and I feel bad but in those cases we order quickly, eat, and leave. But it's really hard to find places open later than 10 pm on Saturdays. NHL games start at 6 so with DH job we can't eat before and I can't eat at the arena (nor would I want to for that many games). We have to go after at 9ish.0 -
I was doing pretty good with my eating until yesterday. Had a Relay For Life meeting last night with food, which included my nemisis - chips and dip. I did NOT resist. Heading out today for a spontaneous weekend trip to West VA for Bridge Day at New River Gorge. My friend is the head park ranger there. (Can't remember what her position is really called.) I'm just going to watch, not base jump. I was looking at the website last night and noticed there is a 5K associated with the event. Wish I had known that in time to sign up. Maybe next year, if I decide to go back, I'll plan better.2

Today’s food?
Coffee.
I’m tempted to make eggs, cheese and Canadian bacon, but I hate cooking. And I’ve had 2 days of “down” on the scale, and I got a letter from the school of nursing today, I’m a little 🤪 and sure my tummy won’t be keen on food.
Yesterday’s food. I just had a burger and 4 onion rings. I worked on house cleaning and school stuff, then DH decided to (take me with him-driver) to go buy a new, new truck 90 minutes away. It’s technically “used” with 3400 miles on it. Huh... okay. I told him I wanted a Porsche now. So I’m starving today after no dinner.
My iPad updated. I’m not liking this crap not working like I’ve gotten use to, the keyboard is locking up. So, toots.1 -
Hi folks!
I disapeared in a hurry! I woke up one day and just said "f it with calories"! I was so done! So I guess it has been nearly 6-8 months and I have gained about 4 lbs but not horrific. But I think I am ready to get back to it.
Nothing really new going on! Still in Cali and still loving it here for running and so glad the summer weather is gone. I am running the CIM for the first time in Dec and poorly behind on my schedule. I am running my 1st 16miler this weekend and I am 1 for 3 runs this week, and that folks is how I destroy my IT band. Must re-find my motivation to run in pitch dark and freezing weather!
Catching up slowly!3 -
Seared scallops with a wine /butter /garlic sauce, steamed asparagus, a rice dish and pinot grigio. I think we did pretty good for dinner tonight.4
-
@7lenny7 - I want to come live at your house and eat all the things you cook! I will take care of Kody for you
@CMorning99 - welcome back
@elise4270 - so.... what was in the letter or have you not opened it yet?
I saw my ortho doc yesterday about my knee. He doesn't think the issue is with my old meniscus tear (I twisted my knee last month and made it sore again). He took an x-ray to rule out arthritis which came back showing some as you would expect on old knees but actually very good from his perspective so no surgery or injections needed. He does want me to do PT to help strengthen any imbalances that are causing my knee to drift in. Funny that my strength trainer was bugging me about how my knees collapse in when I squat and to ensure I am pushing them out and not allowing it to happen.
Not because of anything the doctor said, but I also decided this morning that I have to lose this 15lbs. I am sure it is not helping at all. That means I have to figure out my calories for running vs losing again. If you recall I didn't do so well with that last time and ended up making things worse by not eating enough. So I am thinking I need to really tighten up what I am eating and as @elise4270 says 'do better'. This includes having dessert, if at all, only once a week (looking at you Haagen Dazs Spirits); cutting way back on wine to twice a week; reducing take out even if it is generally healthy (Panera, Subway, etc.) to only once a week. We don't have any travel planned so this should be doable and should allow me to keep to my calories and macros...
Oh and as a parting comment when telling me to schedule my follow up with his PA my ortho doctor told me he is leaving 😢 to do advocacy work at the national level for doctors and patients. He has been great and I have been seeing him off and on when needed for at least 6-7 years. He actually told me about Chi Running and to look into it long before many people even knew about it. I am really going to miss him. I am hoping his PA will have someone she recommends when I go back who is maybe a runner.2 -
@shanaber, I know. @7lenny7 eats like a king of kings! I had fish sticks last night. Fish sticks... man. That’s what I get for being lazy and not having access to great foods.
Dh cooked me breakfast today. So I’m off to an okay start. Definitely not cutting that animal fat by having eggs, cheese and toast w butter. We need to make a plan. Lasagna fixin’s are on the grocery list, it may come off if we can pull it together and think of something better.
@shanaber The letter was fat .
I need to go walk today. Well. Not really. I haven’t even been doing my stationary bike pt. I should probably pick up there if I’m feeling like doing something.
Here’s my atrophied leg, (and my fat beanie). I had, or thought I had recovered most of the mass before this latest sx. But this one seems to have taken a toll on the usage. I suppose I could have anticipated that.
Oh eta. @shanaber I, obviously have terrible form with squats. Pt had me using a hanging rope to hold on too. I plan on doing it asa I’m cleared. Idk if it’d help you.1 -
@Elise4270 it's not always good stuff. Yesterday I had a sausage Mcmuffin for lunch and microwaved frozen chicken strips for supper.2
-
@elise4270 - I think that muscle mass will come back quickly. It doesn't look that bad.
I like to do squats in from of a mirror so I can see what my ankles and knees are doing and focus on keeping my knees out. Doc did tell me that PT will likely have me doing them with a band just above my knees rather than just thinking that I am pushing them out.
It's hot here again. Over 90 today and all through next week. I need to get a long run in that I missed yesterday and planned to go tomorrow. Dh informed me that I have to take him to his appointment tomorrow because they are going to dilate his eyes. Hoping I can get at least a short run in early early... maybe long run on Wednesday.
I finally got to the grocery store and Costco. Have all the fixings for spaghetti sauce and we are grilling sausages for dinner with sauerkraut. I bought all kinds of veggies and some apples and bananas. Bananas are already too ripe because of the heat. Should have put them in the fridge.2 -
@shanaber - 15 pounds! Wow, that seems like a lot for tiny you! Bummer on the doctor leaving. Bananas here ripen way too fast - Once they are past the point that I can stomach eating them, I peel and freeze them and use in my shakes. I never have put bananas in fridge. I have a big bunch of them so I may put half in and test it out!
@7lenny7 - lol sausage mcmuffin. I love egg mcMuffins. Since I became veg, I just take off the canadian bacon. I guess a pure veg, would order it without because the meat touched the egg, but that doesn't bother me.
@elise4270 - when I do squats I focus on pushing butt back. The letter was fat? So good news!
My weight is still up from trip to Portland. I guess 2 days back at work didn't bring it back down. But I had a heavy weekend of eating. Sat night I had to chaperone homecoming. This always puts me in a bad mood. I'm happy for the kids but the nonsense the chaperones go through drives me crazy. It is at a Disney hotel and the food is awful. A friend's husband used to work in catering for Disney and when they have an event like this (1000 people) they cook it all about 10am and it sits in warmers until served (so about 8pm for us!) Oh well, it's done!
Yesterday was a big bike ride - 66 miles and my weight is always up after that. So back at tracking everything closely this week!1 -
@ddmom0811 yes it was an offer to join the program.
Today's food?
I'm still in the planning stages of the day.2
