Runners that need some nutritional accountability

So after all the discussion on 'processed' foods, I started looking at some of the things I eat pretty regularly. Flatbreads for one, that I use for a sandwich instead of regular bread. I had no idea they are so easy to make. I will be making them rather than buying. Won't have as much protein or fiber but I can get that without it being added to my bread.
And if it ever cools off here I will start baking regular bread again too. I prefer my own but it needs to be warm in my kitchen and not drafty like it is when we have the doors and windows open due to the heat.2 -
@shanaber I put my bread in the oven to rise if the house is open. Not on of course. Unless it's so cold, I warm it then turn it off. But you don't have that issue.
New computer/laptop. AKA first world problems.
We went round about what to get after my 8+ yo laptop choked on something. I've been using DH's and DD was using mine for computer class homework. DH wants his back now... So fine I do research and find THE ONE. Fell in love with it. Nope. DH isn't keen on it, it's pricy and he doesn't like the brand, Asus. It was perfect.
He went on a hunt for a replacement. Found one Dell, I'm not keen on the brand, or color (silver), or weight (1 million pounds).. But it'll do. I'm sad. The price difference was only 100 bucks from my dreamy puter in lovely Cobalt blue, 2.5 pounds, and I could call it sassy assie.
I'm hoping when he gets home and I unbox the beast, I'll love it just as well. Sorry assie. I still love you. Someday we'll be together.
Maybe someone tell me something good about the beast. oh its mine. stupid pretty blue laptop tempting me in to loving it.

Food?
Tamales. Burgers. Dr pepper. Nothing to live for without my lil blue ASSus.1 -
Oh okay... I really like the beast.1
-
Ha! I had a Dell when I was working and hated it. Only because it was SO big and heavy and made traveling for work, which I was doing all the time, just miserable. At home sitting on my desk it was just fine!
Now I have full converted to a Mac OS person, something no one ever expected 🤣0 -
I'm all MAC too. I never thought I'd make the jump either! But I had to get a Mac when I was writing an App and the computer lab where I teach became Macs. Now I love it.
My weight is slowly climbing. No idea why ... I lost when DH was in hospital and now all that came back plus some. I've really been looking at all foods this week. I suspect it will drop down in a couple days!
Make vegetarian korma Tuesday night and had it last night and again tonight! Otherwise same 'ol yogurt (Fage 2% Greek -plain) with 1/2T local honey. And salad that is all unprocessed to my knowledge. Oh wait, the dressing isn't.
3 -
@ddmom0811 The dressing could be not a processed food? milk, oil, seasonings? Omit the preservatives?
I contemplated making the switch to Mac. But couldn't justify it. What if i spent $1200+ and hated it? There were some fair deals.
Food.
Coffee. Beyond that I'm not sure. I should cook something in the IP. DH is off the red meat which is great since we have none. I need to go to the store and get crazy^100 monkey monster food, so there's an opportunity to pick up something. Just what exactly...
DD wanted rice and it has gotten cold out again. I could do a basic chicken soup. or cheat and do a white chicken chili.1 -
I was fortunate to inherit my dd's really old MAC to try it out first. I was really dubious that I would like it and could get used to it. That I was able to get all the Microsoft products that I am used to (word, excel, onenote) from work for $10, sealed the deal for me.
@ddmom0811 - so the kids all use MACs for their classes?
We had spaghetti last night from the sauce I froze a couple weeks ago and will have it another night or 2 this week. I also took out some pork chops and need to decide how I want to cook them. When I was grocery shopping I bought all the beans and things I need to make chili too. It isn't cold here (in fact it is going to get hot (90's) again the next few days) but chili just sounds good. I guess because of the time change it just feels more like winter is coming.1 -
I have a Dell desktop and laptop. I love them because they are perfect and powerful for photo editing. I don't do a lot of editing on the laptop anymore (it's old) and I bought a surface which I LOVE. OMG. I only edit my phone photos on the surface or laptop because I want my professional ones on my desktop. Dells are up there with Macs for editing. A ton of photogs are moving over to Dell. I looked at Mac and could get a better system for less money with Dell. And I hate all apple products.2

Well, I have not done well today, nor yesterday. I had to get cat food, so what the heck, I grabbed a burger again. I was tired of hearing my tummy rumble. I always watch the kids at the drive-through window. How easy it is to steal card numbers. I thought I saw this kid take a photo of my card, so I immediately turned it off. That'll teach me to buy burgers. I'll turn it on later and see if any charges were rejected.
I was weak and bought no soup fixin's. I've spent too much time playing with my new toy. I'm loving all the things it can do. You'd think I'd get more HW done.
@ddmom0811 What's BYOD? Buy Your Own DELL? haha!1 -
Interesting to see the conversation on computers as I am in desperate need of a new laptop. Mine is really old. It has had issues for 3 or 4 years when it restarts. Now the battery had died, so I have to keep it plugged into the wall. I had a Dell desktop before I got this laptop, an ASUS btw. It's the first laptop I've ever had. I like it okay, but really loved my Dell, so have been thinking about going back to them.
I went to the doctor this morning because I've been coughing, sneezing, draining, sore throat, etc. One of the kids in my room at daycare has strep, so I wanted to make sure I didn't have that. Nope. Just a viral infection, aka cold. My doctor did suggest I get some Cold Eze. She said it seems to work for her. So, I did and I can tell a difference tonight. She did warn me to get the lozenges and not the stuff you put up your nose. She said that can cause you to lose your sense of smell!
When the nurse put my weight into her system, she said, "Oh you've lost weight. Five pounds since you were here last." That was just a month ago. I monitor my weight, so I knew I had, but it was still nice to hear.4 -
@Elise4270 lol bring your own device! Wow took a pic of your cc? Where was this person? In line by you?
@quilteryoyo sorry about the cold but great on the lbs! I find the Coldeeze works best as soon as I feel the cold coming on.
I went to play at school and when I got home I had chocolate milk and cookies. Not too many but certainly not healthy ones.
Granddaughter’s birthday party is Saturday and I’m making a cake tomorrow after work!3 -
The suspected card pic was in McDonald's drive-thru. Ya know you can never really see in but I always stare at them anticipating they can see me.
This kid turned his back to me, pulled his phone from his back pocket, put it back, turned back to me, fumbled the receipt and handed it back to me. So it could have been nothing, but I'm glad I can turn that card off. I looked him square in the face, he didn't look at me. So I'm inclined to think he's shady.
If I have declined charges, I'm gonna light that boy up. I saved the receipt with his name, time, and day.
Tis the season. Watch your cards.1 -
@Elise4270 Glad you were watching your card. I hope it was nothing.0
-
@quilteryoyo I hope you can find a really great deal on a new computer. Some are already marked down. At staples i found several marked down 200-250$. Looked like they were just making room for 2020 models. So with that and cyber Monday deals, I hope you find a steal.
Is it insane to be writing 2020 for anyone else. Maybe it was too many buck Rogers shows, wasn’t that set in 2030? Seems like we’ve entered the future. Haha!
Food?
I have such a busy day and a laundry list of of to-do’s. I’m going to have to make a plan. Just coffee so far. This time change has got me a bit, I’m up too “late”.0 -
@elise4270 - Since I work in a school and do the database set up, I'm always years in advance. So I set up the 2019-20 around this time last year and it did feel weird to say 2020. And we have class of 2020, 20211, 22 and 23 here. What hit me a few years ago was all the kids coming in born after 2000. And a couple months ago for 9/11 ceremony at school, a lot of the kids hadn't been alive during 9/11.
Also, I know I can retire at the end of the 2023-24 school year! Not positive I will, but it's in the plans! Some days I think "go do something else now!" And others I think "I could never leave these kids!"
Weight was finally down this morning after my late night snacking. Why do I obsess over that number?! Who cares! OK, me.

@quilteryoyo and anyone else electronic shopping. I saw this sneak peek deals Dell, while setting up my new gadget (still exploring), I checked out what ! just got that was already 100 bucks off, and it's another 100 off for the upcoming sale.
@ddmom0811 ya, seeing those years, kids born after 2000? wow! they are already in school? math... wow, they are grown-ups! I hadn't realized so much time has gone by.0 -

I wanted to let you all know that I do have a physical coming up in less than 2 weeks. Also, I had my first ever mammogram 2 days ago and they want to see me back in two weeks for a more in depth one. I feel like I'm going to unravel...
I appreciate all of your input. Hopefully I will get some better news or at least insight to help me be better.3 -

I had a day recently when I ate nothing but tempura. We had to run out to the country to feed horses because my mom couldn’t do it, so skipped breakfast, stopped at a Japanese place which we have been to but not recently on the way back. They have mediocre sushi of the kind with a lot of spicy mayo, but their tempura as I recalled was pretty good, so I ordered a la carte one side order of shrimp and one side order of vegetables, figuring, based on price, that I would end up with enough food to make a small, high fat, but extremely delicious lunch, and I had the calories to spend, so whatever.
The usual side order of shrimp tempura around here is two jumbo shrimp. Well... their order of tempura shrimp turned out to be 6 enormous prawns, plus tempura vegetables - two big florets of broccoli, two huge slabs of zucchini, two big slices of onion, and two big pumpkin slices! All coated in a really thick batter, not usual thin tempura batter. I couldn’t finish it, much less the 4 dollar side of veggies which was twice the amount of veggies that came with the shrimp! I ended up boxing the whole veggie order along with two shrimp, and splitting half the veggies from the shrimp order with my husband, who boxed up half of his teriyaki bento. Then I heated it in the oven that night for dinner, gave my husband half the veggies.
I don’t even want to imagine the calories. Most of the entries I found online were saying about 100 calories per pierce for tempura, but I’m pretty sure they had never seen anything like these giant pieces with thick batter. I’m guessing more like 300 per piece. And the batter was so thick that the carbs had to be fairly high as well. I logged the entry I found despite knowing it was lowballing, shrugged and went to bed.
Got up the next day... two pounds down????
It’s since gone back up a pound, by the way. Scale weight is some crazy, mind twisting stuff.2 -

Don't unravel. It is very possible to need a second one if there is, I think it was, dense breast tissue. Wait until there is something to worry about (says me, that spent a fair amount of the day researching what I think maybe the next surgery). So, we'll hang in there together.2 -

Crying just reading this because I feel not so alone. Thank you...
Adding: Lady on the phone said there were calcified spots in one of my breasts. I hope this means nothing for me or that these spots can be removed.2 -

I embellish on calories, put it in much higher because I'd rather be over than under. Biggest shrimp I've ever eaten were fried tiger shrimp in coconut flakes batter. Hey, you're two pounds down, though, so maybe you need more of those shrimp?!? The whole meal sounds delicious and filling! Yes, scales do lie though.1 -

I'm no authority, but I think the calcified spots are nothing but remnants of past infection.
Susan G Komen sites says: Calcifications are common. They are found on about half of all mammograms in women ages 50 and older (and on about 1 in 10 mammograms of women under 50).
definitely don't worry yet.0 -
@elise4270 - we had an incident a couple of weeks ago with our Visa card. Apparently someone tried to use the number at a gas station to charge $1, yes $1 not a typo.. My only guess is they were testing to see if it would go through but the bank caught and declined it immediately. They would have been smarter to try charging $40 or $50 as that is what we normally spend. As I think about it I wonder how they would even do that at a gas station - you can't really enter the number or tell someone the number to enter, they want the card. Unless it was a worker. Hmmm. Well we have a new card with a new number. We also watch the charges really closely all the time but especially at this time of the year.
@ddmom0811 - I hate the constant up and down of the scale so I don't weigh every day anymore. I do track it though in a spreadsheet and love to see the line for 2019 trending down!
@quilteryoyo - I also love it when I get that feedback at the doctor's office, especially since their scale tends to be about 3lbs higher than mine at home. May be more accurate but I guess it depends on how often they have it calibrated.
@rheddmobile - I love tempura. I haven't had it in ages though. I don't think I would like the thick heavy batter though. One of the things I love about it is that wonderfully light crunchy batter. There was a place we used to go when I was in Palm Beach for work, that had the best tempura. They guys I was with all went for sushi but when my tempura came the serving was enough for everyone at the table!
@LoveyChar - hang in there. For your first mammo they typically want the best possible view so they can use it for comparison if there are changes over time. Also chances are if you haven't had any problems (no lumps felt by you or your doctor) if they did find one it would likely be small and early. I had a similar experience, was told to come back and on the 2nd they found a lump and did an immediate needle biopsy as they thought it was a cyst. It wasn't and when I had it removed it was cancerous but still encapsulated. I didn't have to have any other treatment other than more frequent mammograms and it has been over 20 years. Note both my maternal aunt and grandmother had breast cancer so I feel like I got very lucky having that mammogram.
I did pretty well today food wise, except for the popcorn at the theater... It was hot so we went to see a movie in the nice cool theater. Fortunately I did not eat much of the popcorn and have a lot of it left over. We saw Harriet and it was awesome. Such a good movie and an amazing woman! I don't think my dh knew or remembered much about her and was amazed at all the things she did.3 -
@ddmom0811 The scale does vary a lot. I do still weigh everyday, but know there will be 2 - 5 pound fluctuations around a set point. I tend to weigh my least on Saturday mornings, so that is the weight I enter into MFP. I read somewhere that if you weigh yourself everyday, that you should average your weight over the week and that is your "actual" weight. Makes some sense, I suppose. But, I agree with you that the trending downward is great to see.
@LoveyChar Hang in there. Those calls are scary, but it is more than likely nothing. And, as @shanaber said, if it is something and you catch it early, it's relatively easy to take care of. Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
Thanks @Elise4270 . I'll check out the site in the next couple of days.2 -
Excited that my weight today is down 2 pounds from last week. My lowest in at least 6 years. I looked back at my weight chart for the last year. It's interesting to see what I have known for a long time. No matter how hard I try to lose, I'll stay within 5 pounds of the same weight for 4 or 5 months, then, over the course of a month or two, I'll quickly lose 5 pounds and repeat. So, I am enjoying this downward spiral because I know it will soon come to an end and then I'll be stuck for a few months. I sure wish gaining weight was that hard.4

I am helping with a Relay For Life fundraiser tonight at one of the most expensive places to eat in my little hometown. I get the meal for free for my effort, so will eat more that I should, I'm sure. I have helped with other fundraisers there and was not overly impressed with their food. I think they do better with small group orders. They aren't the best when there are 100 mouths to feed at the same time.2
-
@quilteryoyo - Congratulations on the loss and downward trend! I plateau as well but mine seems to be for a year at a time and not a few months! Honestly though this is the longest I have been healthy and uninjured so I have been able to be more consistent with my running.
I think most restaurants are not really good at mass production of food for a large group. Even catering places that specialize in feeding large groups can only do so much to make the food better than average in most cases. My race in a couple of weeks has a pasta dinner included the night before and I am not going. It is a good restaurant but pasta for 3000 - nah. I will find something better.
We had baked pork chops with fresh green beans last night. For me this is a fall/winter dinner. I guess what my mom used to make when it was cold outside. They were really good even though it was still over 80F out. Tonight DH wants pizza with the football game. Not my favorite pre-long run dinner. I don't eat pizza anymore so I usually have a veggie flatbread and a salad. Hopefully it will be ok on my stomach.2 -
@shanaber Thanks. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who has prolonged plateaus. Glad you have been able to be more consistent with running. I think running more has helped me break this plateau a little sooner than I did last time. Maybe the next one will be shorter.1

Re: credit card theft. When ours was stolen by a gas station it was stolen by the district company which processes cards for that station. They put a five dollar charge through as a test, which no one caught (this was several years ago, credit card companies are better about catching things now) then signed up for a 40 dollar a month porn site, which is actually not even a site, it’s just a front for theft! Apparently what happens is that they figure many people won’t notice the charge, which has some innocuous sounding name, and if they do get as far as figuring out what the charge is for, they will be too embarrassed to dispute it. At the time we had plenty of money and didn’t keep close tabs on our account and it went for four months before we noticed and said, hey, is this for some trial service we forgot to cancel or something?
Anyway in our case it turns out to be part of a huge multi-state sting which led back to the processing company for Exxon for the tristate area, which was based in Mexico. So no actual salesperson saw the card and stole it, it was the company that handles charges itself when the modem calls your card in.1
