@Elise4270 At my house we always use bacon instead of basting! There’s even a fancy word for this technique, it’s called “barding” the turkey. Like medieval barding on a horse. Although I haven’t heard of putting the bacon under the skin, it sounds like it would work well.

When I was a kid I always got to eat the bacon from cooking the turkey!

@rheddmobile the pie sounds good! I'll put it on the menu! I think I have all the ingredients.

    Food
Today's a good get serious day. I hopped on the scale expecting to still be way up and it taunted me with 0.7 pounds from goal weight. I didn't even bother to step off and check if it was on something. I know it's not good.

So. I'm going to buckle down after having 8 or so slices of pizza yesterday. DH wants mulligatawny today. That sounds fine even if it's high calorie, it is a step back to do-better-real food.

@shanaber I did go to the referred website and ordered a bra. I got the front zippered version. Have any of you ever tried those? Here is my reference, if anyone wants to order. http://handful.refr.cc/vickyr (I did not get the extra $10 off because the item I bought was on sale. Oh well.) Or use @shanaber's referral - http://handful.refr.cc/shanab

@quilteryoyo - I have not tried their bras yet. I originally ordered 2 pairs of leggings with pockets. I wore one of them today and LOVE them. They are a bit long on me - I got the 7/8th ones and they are like full length leggings which is fine. I was worried I would be cold since they felt so thin but they were perfect. They use a special fabric that is supposed to help keep you at the perfect temperature and they definitely did. I went back today since they have the 30% off everything sale going on, and got a pair of capris, a bra for me and one for my dd. They look awesome and the reviews are good.

Food today was ok. I didn't eat enough before my run (tiny slice of pumpkin pie) and not enough for the day overall. DH wanted In N Out so that is what we had even though I really wanted to cook something. What I really need to do is plan better because when I don't have a plan we tend to eat whatever sounds good and is convenient rather than what would be better for us generally.

@shanaber I started to buy a pair of leggings, just so I could get free shipping, but opted not to. Sounds like I should have.

I made the mistake of stepping on the scale and got a shocking jump in weight. I shouldn't be so surprised, my comfy clothes are getting uncomfortable. *Sigh* and DH talked to Alex, he celebrated his graduation from rehab by drinking. Wonderful.

I'm still trying to do better. I had chips and queso tonight. I thought I was smart and got DD and dh Mexican food and didn't get anything for me only to have stolen dds cheese dip. And dhs taco.

Thank you, ladies, for the well wishes.

@rheddmobile you're right when you say whatever the problem is doesn't go away. I have a spot close to my chest wall, deep enough where I or my doctor could not feel it with a self examination. Because of the location, I asked to speak with the radiologist. I was surprised to see this young, maybe 30 year old, man come out. I asked him my questions (I thought of even more after I left; I hate when this happens). He answered that it's "probably benign." Of course the word "probably" terrifies me but he assured me that if he thought a biopsy would need to be done today, I wouldn't even be leaving. He wants to see me back in 6 months. I have periodic inflammation of that breast. But...my mind increases the pain (I believe). It's all real, very real. The mammogram proved that but anxiety makes everything worse... I had been crying but he was looking at me when he told me that his mother died of breast cancer. I got it. I understand why he chose examining mammograms as a profession. Before I spoke to him, the mammogram technician was explaining some of the characteristics of what they look for to identify the different types of cancer, so I guess that's somewhat reassuring. I'm okay but I'm not okay...I go back on May 29th.

Okay happy moment! I ran 12.4 miles on Saturday! This was my longest run ever! Running helps me. One, it lessens my anxiety and two, it helps me feel at least somewhat in control over my body.

I appreciate you ladies letting me dump here. Sometimes I feel like I'm falling apart.

@LoveyChar Glad the appointment went okay. I understand being "okay, but not okay." You believe they know what they are talking about, but still have the nagging worry. Hopefully after your May 29th exam you'll feel better about it all. I run for the same reasons you do. We're here for you to "talk" anytime you like.

@LoveyChar - I think the mammography results are good and it is good they want to recheck in May. They are staying on top of it and you should too, making sure if anything changes you call and get it checked out. Also congrats on your longest run so far!

@elise4270 - I am sorry about Alex but it is probably a good thing that he admitted that he had relapsed. Hopefully he will stay on top of it going forward and call before he has that drink instead of after.

I went to Trader Joe's yesterday primarily to pickup some dinners for our neighbor. They had samples of graham crackers with baked lemon ricotta. I bought some, it was delicious. I was worried once I got it home about the calories and macros but it isn't bad. If you like lemony cheese cake this is really a good alternative. 2 graham crackers and enough ricotta to spread nicely on them is around 150 calories. A bit high in carbs and fat but very satisfying (20g carbs, 4protein and 6 fat).

@elise4270 - so sorry about Alex. Like @shanaber said at least he admitted it.

Been at the convention center all week. Kids won first place with their project -- Test Anxiety Management Exercise - TAME. More details later. This is at the Orlando Convention Center and about an hour from my house with traffic so I stay at the hotel next door. So funny when I check in ... where are you from? 30 miles away.
Anyway, I feel like I lost weight this week! Could be totally wrong. Even though I ate a much bigger lunch than I would have at school each day. However, I had no snacks in my room. Curious to weigh in tomorrow. Although I did have a lot of wine the last night at the banquet and afterwards with the teachers.

My running streak is going well, but today I had to pack up at hotel and get to school early so need to run a mile on treadmill when I get home! Then help move everything out of our bedroom for wood floors that get installed tomorrow. Not one thing done for Christmas yet.
I ran the 5K on Wednesday that the convention has each year and was very happy with my time - 28:30 (although Garmin had 3.06). I thought that was better than last year but when I checked last year was 28:27! And the year prior was 27:30. I'm slowing down!!!

@quilteryoyo & @shanaber Thank you ladies! I am doing better. Mentioned that I get periodic inflammation there and I'm trying to reduce my saturated fats and sugars. I'm running almost every day and staying positive. In a little over two months I'm running the Austin Marathon. I watched the movie Brittany Runs a Marathon and I'm nothing like Brittany in how she transitioned so suddenly from bad behaviors to good in order to run a marathon. But I am so much like her in my desire to run this thing!

@ddmom0811 You have a lot going on. If it weren't for my husband, I'd put up the tree last minute or not at all and I loathe shopping, for the most part, especially this time of year so he does that too.

@Elise4270 I'm sorry about your son. I think so much of drinking stems from anxiety. I know you probably mention every possible alternative to drinking for him. Meditation and journalling help and I went through a period of five years where I did not touch any alcohol and when I first made my intentions clear, my husband bought a huge tub of ice cream every few days. Getting fat happens but then you can lose it and work on even healthier alternatives.

@ddmom0811 Congratulations to you and your students! That's awesome. Good for you for keeping up your steak.

I have nothing done for Christmas yet either - well, I did buy one gift yesterday. There's a lot to do, but a lot may just get left undone. It has before and the world didn't end. LOL

I have my first race in over 4 years tomorrow. It's a 5K for a local charity. The weather is supposed to be good. I'm hoping for a good time, but my main goal is to run as I have been training (that being run 4 min/walk 1 min, repeat) and see how it goes.

@LoveyChar I was pleased with my results, considering it was a really hilly, tough course. My official time was 35:10 for an 11:19/mile pace. AND, I got first place in my age group! According to my Garmin, I also got a PR for a 5K and ran my fastest mile. The mile I have done faster on the treadmill, but Garmin doesn't know that. LOL

I’m doing ok. I’m on a quest to find my people. Nursing school orientation done, finals this week. I’m in planing mode. I looked seriously into joining Doctors Without Borders (years in the future). With that I’ve added French to the self-taught languages goal. Classes overlapped with courses I have to take. Poo.
There is a opportunity to do class officers. Nothing I’ve ever really done, but I think I want to get involved. We’ll see come February how I feel about that.

    Food
Still off track. Clothes hate me and I need to go buy scrubs. Yay, clothes shopping when the scale is up. 😩

    Hip
Encouraging. I hope after this next visit I’ll feel more comfortable trying walks. I had a good day (weeks ago), and did the moby egg trot and really hurt myself but there seems to have been some payoff or it is just coincidence that I’m a bit stronger which means less pain. My med gluteus is often on fire and I get his sharp pain in the middle of my thigh, so we’ll not push it. I really should swim once finals are over and I have no excuse, except I let my membership lapse, $750 seemed like an unreasonable fee now that work isn’t paying half of it. I can do a 10$ day pass. So no excuse. I think I wanna wait on the doc visit though. Besides, I’ve gained so much I doubt my swimysuit fits. Oh I can go to the free membership place... cuz dh is Chickasaw Indian. They are ok. Small therapeutic pool full of grouchy sometimes dirty old people. I think 10 bucks is fine.

@elise4270 - Glad you are doing ok, was worried about you! Hope finals all go well. I have no doubt you will blaze right through them!
How was the orientation? Getting you excited for the program?
One nice thing with scrubs is they are really comfortable! I have dd's from when she worked at the vet office. I wear them around the house.
I am going to join the new Gold's gym that is going in where the Planet fitness used to be. They have a really good rate but it won't be open until March. They do have a temp location set up with treadmills, ellipticals and free weights. What I really want is some fun classes. Good thing is you don't pay the monthly rate until they are open in the new facility and you are locked in at that rate, it doesn't go up in 6mos or a year.

I really need to go grocery shopping. I have nothing to eat for lunch and I end up with cheese and crackers. Dinner last night was supposed to be my last container of the chili I made a while back and froze, with cornbread. The cornbread turned out beautifully (made it with greek yogurt) but the container I thought was chili was actually spaghetti sauce and there was no chili in the freezer. We ended up having spaghetti but I was so disappointed. Guess I was really looking forward to the chili and cornbread. Don't know what we will have the cornbread with now. I may need to make some soup.

@shanaber yes, I think I am excited. I bought most of my book for next semester. It was painful and exciting. 14 books are needed and I think I have ordered 9. I have an ebook for one, but finding out (again) that I’m a tactile learner, I think the physical book to study is the best option.

Now if I can somehow use the excitement to cut some calories back...

If I make time, I can use the gym at school. They even have a pool. So... I’m running out of excuses to get moving.

I hinted to dh to make more chili and he wasn’t interested. Sure sounds good though. Do you put sour cream in your chili bowl?
  • shanaber
    shanaber Posts: 6,423 Member
@elise4270 - I love a dab of sour cream on my chili and some green onions! If I don't have sour cream I have also used greek yogurt which works just as well IMO. I am going to make some more too - it was really tasty and I think I have everything I need pretty much.

Congratulations on nursing school! That is a great profession and you have great goals! Just a suggestion: buy your scrubs second hand if you can. That way when you lose the weight, you can donate the clothes if they're in decent shape. I bought so many pairs of my scrubs second hand.

Thanks @LoveyChar ! I’ll buy the scrubs retail since they are strict on the color needed. But if by chance lose “too much”, I’ll donate them. I noticed you aren’t too far from me, I’m in southern OK. It’s cold today and windy. Are you in the heath care field? I saw in the running thread that you are an Aggie.. I can’t remember the degree though.

    ———————————
The scale is still tattling on my eating habits. Ugh. So I set new goals to cut calories. Today wasn’t bad. I still ate poor choices: dates, frito cheese dip and chips, and noosa. I’m not under calories like I wanted, but if I can resist eating anything else pushing me over, it’ll be a start. I have managed almost a liter of water today. Usually no water but canned bubbly water. I told dh I had to have bottled water, no way I can drink out of a cup or the tap, fridge, nor big water cooler water that tastes like lake dirt. So if it gets me to drink water, I’m going to be a water snob.

How do you all do your water?

@elise4270 - so exciting on the classes. I totally agree with you on ebooks. I don't mind for reading a novel, but for studying, no! My daughter's BF is in law school and he prefers books also.
As for water, for several years I lugged in cases of Smart Waters and/or Evian (depending on what was at Sams/Costcos). Last year our school started collecting bottle caps to have a bench made out of them (apparently the bottle cap type of plastic doesn't get recycled normally by the local trash pick up). I saved them all summer to bring back to school when school started this year and I was disgusted by how many water bottles I had wasted!
So... starting this school year I bring in one of my 24 oz cycling bottles ( a camelbak). We have a refrigerator with filtered water in one office so I walk there at least 2-3 times a day to fill it. The only thing is I am filling it on the way to class so it might be empty or usually < 1/2 full. So I don't know how much I am drinking. I am glad I stopped wasting so many plastic bottles in any case. I have a lot of cycling bottles so I switch one out every day for a clean one.

My weight is up in my high acceptable range, but I want it to go down. That won't happen with the food choices I've been making! I'm back on standard breakfast and lunch that I always eat, however, I seem to be snacking too much!
I am getting the Invisalign braces in a few weeks and I won't be able to snack as easily apparently! Maybe I am ensuring I get it all done now!
The running streak is going well. Day 14. I am trying to do between 4-5 miles most days except on my "rest" or cycling days when I will do 1. The weather is not cooperating -- it's been too hot this week. At least last week was nice.

    .... un-food-running stuff ...
I was going to share the info about my students' project at IITSEC. This is the craziest thing because it is such a simple project and yet it was so popular. They were to come up with some type of simulation/training project and they decided to write a test anxiety app. It is a beach scene in virtual reality --the user puts on the VR headset and headphones, sits in a beach chair (and we brought a beach umbrella to the convention center too!), I brought in some exercise mats to put the chair on, so it would feel soft like sand -- for a full multi-sensory immersive environment! One of the students in the class can write music so he wrote very soothing music (no one could believe it was written by a 16 year old!) I had a guidance counselor here record the instructions because she has a very calm/soothing voice. The app is only 4 minutes long and it just teaches the 4-4-4- breathing technique. It is just so simple. I've had projects such as "finding patient zero" which was software trying to track a disease to the original source (that won first place too). So I was not expecting this to be so popular and certainly not to win. Anyway, we are now trying to get another VR headset so we can install it in our testing center so students can benefit from it. The boys were asked by several people to contact them about allowing the app to be used at various places (a Naval training center, a hospital that wants to use it for kids before taking blood/chemo/etc). It was all a very exciting week for the boys. A couple weeks prior to the convention they have to submit their paper on the project and the first draft they gave me was awful. I pretty much let them have it and said it was the worst I'd ever seen and they worked on it all weekend. Then their first practice of the presentation a week prior to the convention was terrible. I didn't let them have it on that because speaking is difficult and it was the first go. So I made them practice at the convention center almost 6 hours over 3 days and they did so great on the final presentation!

@ddmom0811 It's funny how things that seem "simple" are the best ones. The project sounds very exciting for you and your students. It also sounds like you are an amazing teacher.

My weight is hanging in there - staying between 145 and 150. I was really hoping to get below 145 this year, but will be happy if I don't go back over 150. Then, in the new year I'll work on loosing another 5 pounds. I'd really love to get to 135 and stay between 135 and 140, but I really think that is a pipe dream.

As for water, I don't drink enough. Especially when I am working at the daycare. It's easier to drink in the older class rooms, but when I am in the baby room or the 1 - 2 year old classes, there just isn't time to stop long enough get a drink. I almost exclusively drink water though, except for coffee in the morning and tea at my mom's on Sunday's. I do drink bottled water, but am trying to reduce my carbon footprint, so I refill them and put them in the fridge for when I am at home. Probably not the best idea, but at least I'm not throwing away a bunch of bottles every day.

Wow @ddmom0811 ! Congratulations on the win! What a wonderful experience for these kids!

I'd love to do away with the plastic bottles. We started saving plastic and aluminum for recycling. I'm surprised how quickly it piles up. For some reason, there is no longer recycling available here now. So I'll check neighboring towns and try to drop it there. I can do the refill water if I can add a splash of pom to cover the taste, but only in the bottle. I have an aversion to drinking from a cup. I have an insulated water cup that only gets used for water. That works fine in the summer with ice, but I can't seem to embrace it in the cold.

I gave in 3/4 the way through the semester bought a microbiology ebook. No book was required for the class and I thought I needed a resource. It's fairly useable. Probably even do-able if I had time to acclimate to it. But I think I'm better off wrangling 14 books. Sheesh. summer class I did the ebook and it was horrible and gave in to the txt. Hit and miss I guess. I've already cleared shelf space, the cat-office has a futon instead of bunk beds now, so more office and less cat. I've yet to move in and claim study space. I think I want a rug (tile) and an ottoman. And I'm currently spoiled sitting in the living room with the fireplace going.

    Food
Yesterday I gave in late and went over my calories. Scale is up.
Today. I'm already hungry and have no plans. Exam tomorrow so I probably shouldn't not eat, which means I'm incline to order a burger. I just don't wanna get out, so that may save me. I could just put a roast on.

    Ok onward.
