Runners that need some nutritional accountability

@elise4270 - thanks, I think it is just me feeling grumpy from not running. I see the doctor on Thursday so hopefully she will have good news. Also I walked a lot this weekend (over 12k steps each day) even though I wasn't running Hobbes the Vizsla and I had a sitting job to do. I wore regular shoes since we were at a dirt facility and my foot is feeling fine. I do have low thyroid, have pretty much all my life and have it monitored regularly. I will talk to the GP about it when I see her in January.
I have done ok with the cookies I have made. I even told DH he couldn't eat anymore. I have more plates to give and am running out of cookies. Made more of one kind last night and will make another this morning. We are taking them and an appetizer to a Christmas Eve party our friends hold after Mass.
Also I have only had one tiny piece of pie. I know it is there but the box is pushed on the far side of the dining room table out of the way so I don' really think about it. Being at agility for 2 days all day has helped too.
The other day we were talking about the traditions and memories of all our Christmases. We used to have all of our friend at our house both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve mostly because there were so many kids and our house was the biggest and most centrally located. It started right after lunch with our entire neighborhood putting up luminaries along the sidewalks and driveways - every house (~2-300) from when you turned off the main road had candles. If someone was gone we would do it for them. All the kids helped by folding the bags and putting sand in and a candle was dropped in each one. After dark the adults would go out and light all the candles. The city even turned off the street lights for a couple of hours and all the cars parked in the garage or out of our neighborhood. It was really beautiful and brought everyone together.
It was fun but I don't miss being up until 3 wrapping and my daughter wanting to get up at 4 to see if Santa came (she was put back to bed or into our bed until at least 6 )
It is going to be a busy day today but I will get to the gym! I have already put it on my list of things to do!
Hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday!!3 -
Well I'm staying under my calories, but yesterday I ate nothing but cheese. I just really wanted not to hold back at the cheese tasting plate. My stomach today is letting me know the lack of fiber was a mistake.
I did have a normal breakfast first, I guess... .1 -
@rheddmobile Have your gallbladder removed and you can eat all the cheese you want
I ate the last half of my bbq sandwich today. My stomach was nauseous off and on the last 15-20 hours. I have no idea why. I'm hoping its not a serious bug, like the flu. I make a big deal every year about not getting the shot when my coworkers do. It'd be embarrassing to get sick.
No idea what else I'll eat today. I suppose that'll depend on what my stomach will allow. I have a few green bananas.
I'm trying to get dh out for a walk today. I need away from the new ipad. Everything I want costs money, apps, the pencil... Sure I'll find more if i get on it again.
I think we are going to the 7pm Mass. @7lenny7 how brave are you going at 4? Lots of kiddos! I'm i bit of a germaphobe in public places and want to go to the mass with the least germ population. Although, adults are pretty germy too.1 -
No calorie tracking today and tomorrow. I want to enjoy the days.
@Elise4270 we go to the early Mass so we can eat dinner at a reasonable time and have time to open family presents after that. I'm not a germophobe as far as crowds go, so that never entered my mind. I hate to say it but we've become C&E Catholics and I'd probably be ok not going at all. I still have a very strong faith, but have grown tired of the politics in the Church.1 -
We are doing something with an acorn squash for supper today. Christmas Eve presents at 6ish, church at 7. We have been cleaning the house all day because we've really neglected things almost hoarder-fashion the past year or so. It's embarassing how bad it's gotten. I think my husband and I have both been fighting situational depression.
Anyway, we're both in cleaning mode right now and I think we are going to scrounge and see about some professional cleaning services in the new year.
I'm not really tracking today. A bit queasy but I think it's because I overdid chocolate yesterday and now haven't eaten much today (literally some bran cereal with yogurt, half a thing of French fries while we were out, and then a Starbucks coffee with an oat fudge bar and that's it). I think I'll grab an orange before I dive back into cleaning.2 -
Now we decided we are ordering in supper because we are just done. Ha. What to order...2

Having someone come in once a week for just an hour or two and do the heavy cleaning can really be worth it, not that much money and a huge amount of yuck you never have to think about.
We have an acorn squash in the fridge, I think it's going to end up roasted for Christmas Eve dinner, with a little maple syrup, butter, and some pecans. Lamb chops to go with. If I'm feeling adventurous I may make some fresh cranberry relish.
Our big family meal is Christmas breakfast, which fortunately is a pretty easy meal for me as a diabetic, since there are eggs and bacon. I can just fill myself up on protein and ignore any carbs that go over my limit.1 -
@rheddmobile - I made fresh cranberry relish this morning with oranges from our tree. It is my favorite!
@sarahthes - we have had someone clean for us 2xmonth for years now. I certainly could do it myself now that I am retired but I love Ali like family and she can use the money and it is so nice not to have to worry about it. Bonus she also taught my DD to speak Spanish when she was little and she is fluent now (was able to test out on the college AP test for Spanish so she took Latin instead).
One of my friends made acorn squash pasta pillows from a recipe she saw on a show. She even made the pasta from scratch too. I helped her with it the first time she made it a few weeks ago for a dinner party but had to leave before they were all put together so I never got to try them. She made them for the party we went to tonight and on man... delicious!
I did not make it to the gym today even though it was on my list... there was just too much to do and I still haven't even wrapped the DH's gifts... doing that in the morning!3 -
This turned out interesting. LOL... Haven't tried it yet. I think we did it too long, but it won't spoil the soup we are making from the leftovers since we just dumped all the drippings in the stock pot afterwards.

I had to pull 600 calories that I had banked from my 8 mile run day, but managed to stay within my goals despite eating all the things. Santa gave me some diabetic-friendly treats such as garlic almonds, and dark chocolate, and good quality cheese. All these things are low carb but not low calorie! Also my mom puts a ridiculous amount of cheese in scrambled eggs. Tomorrow I plan to start eating normally again.
My main problem right now is I'm not used to eating so much junk, so I have a massive headache from too much sodium.2 -
I did not even try to log food today. I don't think I was too bad on calories but I am sure I was way over on carbs and just feel ugh... tomorrow back to the gym and back on track! My SIL arrives in the afternoon so I need to get over to the gym early so I have time to clean the house a bit, just sweep up the Hobbes hair and maybe get him put for a little walk.
@sarahthes - how did you cook the turkey? My DH put ours in the smoker (a turkey roast actually) He injected it with a seasoning mix he made himself mixed with low sodium chicken stock. It was so tender and yummy! I think aliens though may have taken my husband and replaced him with someone else. In all the years we have been married he has never touched the spice rack, let alone gone by himself to a spice stored and mixed his own blend - who is this man?!?2 -
@shanaber InstantPot! And then under the broiler for 3 minutes but I think we could have cooked it for a shorter time and broiled it a minute or two longer. It was a bit overdone but not horribly so and we made soup stock too. Turkey soup for dinner tomorrow...2

My wife kicked me out of the kitchen while she made everything for our Christmas meal. Normally I make a side dish and a dessert, but she just wanted me out of the way. I'm glad she did because she just knocked it out of the park! Everything she made was so very good. Spiral sliced ham with her own dry rub, potatoes au gratin, some cranberry orange jello salad, carrots and green beans, and my very favorite, a salad made with arugula, wild rice, dried cranberries, pomegranate seeds and probably a few other things. I inhaled this. There were very few leftovers. For dessert she made a deep dish cranberry/apple pie and a bread pudding with bourbon sauce. My FIL brought his homemade bread. I guess I did make the cookies and opened a couple of wine bottles so I wasn't completely worthless. I also cleaned up the kitchen.
5 pound increase over the last 2 or 3 days, but I'm not sweating it. As I get back to my normal diet that carb water weight will go away. Now that I can get out and walk I'm hoping to see some weight reduction in the next few months.3 -
I want to hire someone to clean at least our bathroom and kitchen. I don't mind doing the guest bath (because it's rarely used). I just don't have the energy for heavy cleaning anymore.
I am starting food log again today. I've been very lax on it lately.

Happy day after!
All is well in lovely Cali! I had a great 4 days off and relaxed. I didn't run Sat or Sun but did go out for 30 min brisk walk to meet my "runbet" app. Glad I did the holiday challenge, I sulked the whole way but was sure glad it was done. I ended up having to work a few hours on Monday but got in an almost 5 mile run in the rain....or was it 6? No idea...it was wet and cold. I didn't count calories at all but we only ate out on Saturday when we were running errands all day. We went out to dinner on Saturday for our Holiday Meal and then just stayed in the rest of the time. I tried to eat later in the day, but didn't stick with any real rules. I am sure I ate more calories than I burned and so trying to get back at it today...and I am hungry! I was going to try and do 24hrs (dinner to dinner) but I got miserable and had a UCAN bar (It did not stop the hunger), now just chugging water.
No workout today. No idea what is for dinner
Will weigh in tomorrow.
Visiting my Mom next week so who know what the scale will do.3 -
I happen to have in a pair of work pants today that said they were loose enough for a burger. I resisted. Went to a local sandwich shop for a tuna on rye and they were closed. So, I once again resisted the burger and made a trip to subway. Eh. Probably better than the burger. And fries I was tempted to have, because ya know, my pants said so.
No dinner plans. DH is making chili for his lodge meeting tomorrow, I’m secretly hoping to score some. I doubt I’ll get that lucky, but if I play like I’m uninterested (like the cats do), I may luck out.1 -
We have leftover tamales for dinner. Yum.3

How can there be leftover tamales? Never at my house are they leftover!
I scored chili too.2 -
I had turkey soup for lunch. Made the stock last night with the turkey carcass. Today I skimmed the stock, then added in some cartons of low sodium Campbell's chicken stock and garlic chicken stock, and added celery, onion, wild rice, quinoa, corn, carrots, leftover potatoes, and of course turkey. Served with leftover butterflake rolls.
I had a lot of snacks today but on the whole I feel out of the funk I've been in lately. A super long nap this afternoon helped. I've felt sleep deprived for months.0 -
Hmm, that soup colour is a little off-putting.0

I did great for breakfast and lunch but came home to a strong urge to clean up leftovers. I don't think I did bad, just not great it's just as well. I got a new Sharper Image bluetooth scale for Christmas and this way I can start using it tomorrow at a heavier weight for a more dramatic trend line as I lose weight1

Nah, looks yummy! Throw in some Paprika, flour or turmeric for color if you want. Did everyone “gobble” it up? You can always toss in some dumplings!

The chili was not made with my stomach friendly tomatoes. Luckily, I didn’t eat more than the one bowl. Oh well. Too bad. I assured DH that if there were leftovers, it would get eaten. But I forgot dd and I can’t do those particular canned tomatoes.
No food plans today. I’m up early enough I could have Starbucks egg bites for breakfast, but I think I’ll pass. I’m just not hungry and my weight is up a bit.
Food plans for the day?
I need to drink more water. There are foam cups at work that I dislike drinking from. They tend to smell funny and they shock my teeth. I think I’ll try to refill a water bottle and use it. And I can let it sit to room temp. It’s too cold for cold water and the hot water seems to contain more static. Anyone have other suggestions?1 -
It's been quiet here...everyone doing well with post holiday eating? I'm not.
I thought I was being good but my weight is still creeping up. I hope it's related to retained fluid due to the great increase in activity lately...elliptical and weight training. That 1/2 pound angus burger last night didn't help, but I did sub the fruit cup for fries, so there is that.
I'm going to cut my breakfast from 4 eggs to 3 eggs for now. I made a big pot of ham & split pea soup for my work lunches. I'm looking forward to that, I love a hearty soup. I put so much ham in it that it's more like a stew though. I wonder how that would taste if I used venison instead of ham. I found some venison roasts from last year that I need to use up. Perhaps a better use would be venison barley soup.
Any NYE party plans? DW and I will be at home, doing not much. Our daughter is back in KC. My youngest son will be at his GF's house. My older son and his GF, who is staying with us for a few days, may or may not be joining us. Last year they were going to go out but decided to stay with us at the last minute and we played board games all night. This year I hope they go out and it's just us two at home. I'm just tired of entertaining, even though my wife does most of the work (her choice, it's her jam) and I don't care about NYE at all. Either way, I should take Kody on a long walk tonight before the festivities.

I thinks its been quite here with holiday eats, travel, and a new year of goals.
Ugh. I could not be fatter. I went home for lunch and had a tuna sandwich. Not bad. DH was there and had the chili cheese Fritos out, so i ate too many of them. Ugh. Perhaps i can skip dinner tonight and focus on cleaning my house.
We have a mystery pooper in the house. I'm not sure whats going on. All 3 of the cats use the boxes. But somedays theres a trail of solid normal well formed cat suprises. This morning dh said he steped in it. Yech! So... Maybe a good cat box/floor cleaning is over due. I may have to set up a hunting camera to see just what is going on. Dd is home all day, but shes no help hiding in her room all day long.1 -

I once ended up with purple soup - can't remember what exactly was the issue, I think it was a combination of beets, mushrooms, and wild rice. Anyway your soup looks fine compared to purple, no one wants lavender soup!
What is everyone eating on New Year's? Our tradition is Hoppin' John - black eyed peas with loads of ham and seasoning. My trick is to put a Granny Smith apple in there, adds a little note of sourness and sweetness to cut through the fat. Serve with cornbread (golden, for wealth) and greens with pepper sauce (green, again like money.) The theory is that for each pea you eat, you will have a good day in the coming year. 365 is a lot of peas! Another saying is that as long as you have fat to your peas and pepper to your greens, you must be doing okay. On day 2, add bell pepper, tomato, and celery plus shrimp, and Hoppin' John becomes Limping Susan, which is supposed to symbolize frugality.
None of this is particularly low calorie or low carb, but at least I make the cornbread a little lower on the glycemic index by using Masa tamale cornmeal instead of the regular yellow corn meal. And I have a long run planned for New Year's which should help with the calories.0 -
@7lenny7 - I think the venison with vegetables and barley sounds great but not in a pea soup... that requires ham and a ham bone!
We are hanging out at home with the SIL. drinking wine and eating cheese, crackers, quiche, shrimp and other 'appetizer' type foods. I am not logging but feel like I am well within my calories, if not my macros.
We will make pork chops and sauerkraut for dinner tomorrow. Then back to reality...
I was looking at history charts, calories in and calories burned and feeling very discouraged and depressed. Tomorrow is a new year and I will get back on track! I took measurements today and will track those each and every week. My daughter doesn't think I should measure and lo but I feel like it provides me a sense of control even if it isn't helping at the moment.
On purple soup... I made purple/pink chicken and rice one. It was a pomegranate chicken recipe that was delicious but looked awful!0 -
In the spirit of setting new goals, anyone have any to share?
Me? I would like to Embrace The Do Better.0 -
Well.... @Elise4270 - I need to make changes. I am not quite sure what but maybe just getting back to basics. My plan is to work on losing this extra weight I have gained slowly over the last couple of years. I have done it before and I will do it again.
