First food choices of the year? What’s on today’s menu?
Dh decided to get us take out breakfast. Not really something I wanna start the new year off with, but he seems adamant about starting the year off with a nice gesture. So, I’ll take it. Even though it’s IHOP, Which loooooosly translates to IBS . Butt, I’m a bit bloated any how, prob do me some good. Except for the ensuing dehydration. We’ll manage though.
Harvest nut pancakes, over Med eggs and turkey bacon.0 -
Breakfast this morning was 2 servings of peanut butter toast plus oranges plus coffee - race food.
Lunch was a skinny vanilla latte plus an oat fudge bar.
Supper is going to be pasta with marinara. I think we will do meat in the sauce - I have some ground chicken in the freezer that needs using. Not sure if I will do veggies on the side or just cut extras into the sauce (or puree them to hide them from the kids). Or we could spiralize a zucchini to add... now that the mixer is working again.1 -
We started early with a small piece of Stollen with coffee while watching the Rose Parade. Then DH decided we all needed Starbucks and went out and got bacon/egg sandwiches and coffees. Dinner will be pork cooked with sauerkraut and potatoes and some green veggie - not sure which yet.1

I didn't eat anything until I got back to the gym, about 3pm. I then made a smoothie with our new NutriNinja Pro Mix-IQ or such stupid name. We already had a blender and a Magic Bullet. I'm hoping the NutriNinja will take the place of both. It has 3 times the power of both and is so loud I think I'll keep ear plugs handy. It works great though. My smoothie consisted of a banana, frozen strawberries, kale, cottage cheese and unsweetened vanilla almond milk. It looked like baby poop but taste pretty good. I think the cottage cheese does a lot to get a cream texture and adds a bit of protein.
I also made another batch of ham & split pea soup in the IP and, along with carrots and hummus, have all my lunches ready to go for the next week and a half.

@7lenny7 we have some left over ham. I like split pea soup. Sounds like something to put on tomorrow. I can always freeze it. I don’t like cottage cheese, but I bet it’d be fine in a smoothie. Especially since I can’t find siggis here anymore. Fage works though. Cottage cheese is inexpensive.
Thanks for the ideas!0 -
I think I'm going to try to convert my chili recipe to the IP today after work. Vegetarian though. Beans and more beans.
I am back at work today after being off for a week and a half and I am TIRED.0 -
@sarahthes Chili works great in an instant pot! It helps if you use the sauté setting to partially brown any onions, peppers, etc first.0

Oh man, was out shopping and stopped at Logan’s steakhouse tonight. It’s not hard to find low carb options there, but I’m glad I looked up the calories on my phone (not on the menu despite the new law) because OMG how do you even make 6 spears of grilled asparagus have 210 calories? Glory no wonder so many people are fat.1

@rheddmobile butter..... mmmmm. Haha! That’s a lot of calories! Insane! I hope it was wrong.0

I was going to say olive oil? Or maybe there is a sauce on it too - like bernaise (sp?) or hollandaise?

@Elise4270 - you planning to take some snacks for the long flight? I always want to pack things I like to munch on so I don't buy crap in the airport or on the plane.
Also take a refillable water bottle and get it filled with ice and water once you are through security that way you have it when you want it rather than having to wait to catch one of the stewards to get it for you.0 -

No snacks. I wouldn’t know what to take. I figure (hope) for a breakfast sandwich on the way out. I doubt I’ll need anything else until we get there. I did plan on the water bottle. Maybe I’ll grab a few sandwiches and take them.0 -
@elise4270 - maybe some pocket nuts or a cutie - those are my go to snacks for long flights1

Nope, no sauce, looks like they make have been brushed with butter before grilling. But it would take about two tablespoons of butter to make 210 calories, and I can't imagine 6 measly spears of asparagus holding onto that much butter. Crazy!
@Elise4270 Have a wonderful flight! You're leaving Friday, didn't you say?0 -

Yes. Friday mid morning.. I’m nearly all packed.
@shanaber My kumquat tree is full of ripe fruit, perhaps I should grab them and the nuts.... pocket quats! good thinking there!1 -
@elise4270 - hahahaha 'pocket quats'!1

@Elise4270 You definitely need pocket quats!
We've added another tool to our culinary toolbox. DW bought "Nutri-Ninja Auto iQ Pro Complete Personal Blender", which is a stupidly long name for a high power smoothie maker. Really, who comes up with these stupid names?
At 1100 watts it's three times the power as our old Magic Bullet or our plain jane blender. The hope is that this will replace both, but in spite of it having "auto iQ", there's not much flexibility to the blending.
For smoothies, though, this thing is a rock star. It has an automatic 60 second variable whizzing sequence that does a great job. Since we got this I've expanded my smoothie repertoire to include more good stuff and last night I had one with- Frozen cherries
- frozen mango
- frozen strawberries
- kale
- 4% fat cottage cheese
- protein powder
- vanilla flavored, unsweetened almond milk
That that may sounds gross, and it looked gross too, but it tasted really good. The cottage cheese adds a nice thickness to the creamy texture while adding more protein. I'll have to get,or make, some icelandic yogurt like Siggi's and try that in a smoothie.
So far this thing is a hit. Great for after a run (or elliptical machine).0 -
@7lenny7 sometimes I'm a smoothies for breakfast kinda gal. I have a medium-high end KitchenAid blender. My typical recipe:
Frozen strawberries or berry blend
Spinach
Full fat yogurt (when I was LCHF I used 11%!)
Protein powder

I've been doing pretty well on the nutrition front this week. New Year's Day was a bit high on calories but otherwise I've been pretty low. Down 2.6 lbs since Dec 30.
I posted a link to an article on the Facebook group recently (https://www.bodyforwife.com/the-willpower-myth-how-identity-and-values-are-the-true-regulators-of-behavior/). I've been working on reframing my self-image and I think it's really helping. I find myself repeating (internally so people don't think I'm weirder than I already am) phrases like "I am a woman who is training for a half marathon" during those moments when getting out the door is a struggle (because I'm also a woman who can be lazy at times), or "I am a woman who is fuelling for a half marathon so I don't take more than one serving of dessert" when the temptation arises to have a couple extra cheesecake bites.
It seems to be helping, both with training and with regulating my intake.
I think on Tuesday, when we are predicted to have a high of -19C, I will repeat "I am a woman who embraces the suck."0 -
@7lenny7 I used to make a chocolate cherry smoothie and it was so good! Just add some cocoa powder. Yum0
-
@sarahthes Thanks for reposting the article! My phone wasn't letting me scroll far enough this afternoon and I totally forgot until now!1
-
Supper was a bit high calorie (take out) but it will fuel my run tomorrow. Plus we dangled ordering from my son's favourite restaurant as a behavior reward, and he did something he was reluctant to do so it all worked out that way.0

@7lenny7 - I have had so many bullets and various other blenders that were great for a while then died a sad and painful death. One even spit black 'stuff' into my smoothie.... I broke down and bought a VitaMix. Yes it was expensive and Yes I love it! I use it for smoothies, making fresh orange cranberry salad (whole fresh/raw cranberries and the entire orange including the skin and it comes out perfectly chopped and not ground to bits), making my own peanut or almond butter and so many other things the 'bullets' couldn't do. I am now a VitaMix disciple
Hmm... maybe there are VitaMix ambassadors and they give you free ones to try and review - I could do that!
I have been doing ok with food and calories. Having my SIL staying with us is tough. She just wants to drink wine and eat cheese. It is fun once or twice but not good ongoing. I am trying to limit my wine to 1 glass and managed not to eat any cheese today. I also made a pork tenderloin in the IP for dinner and got her to make a salad. It was really a wonderful dinner.
Tomorrow and Sunday I am at agility all day both days so dinner is on her and DH - we have ribs to smoke and chicken to BBQ. They just have to figure out the sides/veggies.1 -
We are experimenting with vegetarian "sausage" in our pasta tonight. Calories today are okay so far. Even if we overdo the pasta a bit I'll still have a decent deficit.
By the way, I noticed that my Garmin run and steps calories seem to have stopped double counting. Which is nice. Got a bit ridiculous there for a while.1 -
I had the best dish tacos of my life. Ono. I may stay here and get fst on fish tacos, fish and chips and lavaman red ale. Aloha3

Yesterday was pizza day so I'm gonna need to work hard the rest of the week, ha.1
-
Had a family brunch yesterday that put me over by about 800 calories for the day and forgot before the holidays I scheduled a team lunch pizza outing today. I can make it work, but I put some feelers out to see if anyone else on the team wanted to postpone. I sure could use a few extra weeks of staying solid on plan before adventuring out for pizza. Not sure what I was thinking when I scheduled that!1
-
@fitoverfortymom - if you do end up going, could you add a salad to the selections. There might be others on your team who would appreciate having a salad to choose instead of just pizza...
I had a pretty good weekend. The agility trials start early so I typically hit Starbucks for coffee and oatmeal and then take some snacks for during the day. Saturday I think the girl messed up the oatmeal as it was cold when I went to eat it and the oats had not absorbed much if any of the water... I had tangerines and carrots so I ate those and a protein bar. DH smoked ribs for dinner and they were fabulous! I was fine on calories but too high on fat.Sunday I took yogurt and granola with me and also tangerines so that was good but DH got donuts and of course I had to sample the new flavors when I got home. I counted it as a whole donut. Dinner was pretty simple - spicy smoked chicken, with veggies and a rice/quinoa dish so I ended up low on calories and pretty good on my macros!
Tonight is leftover IP carnitas - one of my favorites!!2 -
I think for dinner tonight we will do IP turkey lentil soup. Lunch is just leftovers.0
-
I was able to divert the pizza outing until next week! Now I can plan next week a little better and know ahead of time what to order and to have calories that day. Thursdays are run days so I should be able to work it in.
Pizza is my kryptonite.1
