I took Indy to the vet Thursday to get her teeth done yesterday. Very carefully making sure I only lifted the carrier with my right hand. I was going to pick her up this morning. The vet called at noon yesterday and said she was done and I said I'd be in today. BUT I couldn't stand it. Had to brave the late Friday afternoon traffic and get her. She seems glad to be back and none the worse for the adventure (except maybe a little skittish).0

I have been eating "like a hog," and not exercising this past couple of weeks. Today, I reluctantly got on the scales to get back on track. I had lost a pound. It makes no sense.0

Jean, that's hilarious. We'd been the recipient of those gifts from 2 of our three cats. Midnight was an indoor/outdoor cat. We adopted her when a neighbor moved and asked us to take her. She caught birds and mice. A couple of time, they were still alive and DH released them. She gave him a disgusted look and stopped giving gifts to such an ingrate. Cheyenne was strictly an indoor cat. As winter weather arrived, sometime a little mouse would sneak into the house. She'd catch, dispatch it to the rainbow bridge and then present it. Yuck. Cagney would chase a mouse that got in but had no idea what to do with one. So Cheyenne was the designated executioner.0

It looks like we may have to cut our beach vacation short. I got word this morning that my brother died in his sleep last night. He had gone to bed saying he was having some indigestion and this morning his wife was unable to wake him. It was quite a shock as he was only 67 and seemed to be in good health. He was not a smoker, not overweight, and pretty fit. My cousin said she saw him 2 days ago and he looked really good.
On top of that bad news, I just got back from the urgent care clinic with a diagnosis of bronchitis. They gave me a steroid shot, antibiotics and something for my cough. Hopefully, all of that will kick in soon and I’ll be feeling better by the time we get home.0 -
Oh, Pam, I'm SO, SO sorry! What a shock!
I hope you feel better soon so you can be with your family.0 -
Pam, what terrible news. You all must be in shock. And to be sick on top of that. Are DH's family still going to the beach? Where did your brother live? Sending prayers for you and the family.0

Helene, we are at the beach now with DH’s family. My brother lived about 3 hours west of me in a very small town. I think we may head home a day earlier than planned and drive straight through to get home in one day. It’s about a 12 hour drive if we do that. Arrangements haven’t been finalized yet so I don’t know yet when the services will be held. I doubt that it will be before Friday, at the earliest. We have some family in North Carolina that are coming and possibly some in Ohio as well. The North Carolina family are in the path of the hurricane, so I hope they don’t have issues getting out of town.
My niece in Virginia is also in the path of the storm and under a mandatory evacuation order. Her husband is currently attending a leadership training at Fort Rucker in Alabama, so she will be driving with her son and 2 dogs to get away from the storm. I hope she doesn’t encounter any problems.0 -
I have family in SC. My sister is in the evacuation zone but when I spoke to her yesterday, they planned to shelter in place. They have a dog so most shelters don't take pets. She's well supplied with food, water and hurricane supplies so hopefully they'll be okay. My brother is just outside the evacuation zone so he's also staying. He says he has everything he needs. My sister could go there if she changes her mind. He's about 20 miles from her. I can understand the reluctance to leave when you look at the traffic jams they had in Irma and people running out of gas. Plus there's the uncertainty of what area would be safe. They are saying rivers inland could flood because of heavy rain.
I hope Heather is okay evacuating. Is her son old enough to help drive or is it all up to her?0 -
Pam--Such terrible news. I do hope the North Carolina family have no issues getting out of harm's way.
Helene--The escape route north goes through our state. A family here came home early from Myrtle Beach a day ago and said that the traffic already was resulting in long delays. The governor temporarily suspended tolls to permit faster movement of traffic. As to rain, our area is expected to receive it but not to the extent of the mountainous areas.

I have a colleague in SC who says she isn't evacuating. She has family in western MD so seems to me a visit home might be in order.
DH has a colleague who's still planning to go to his daughter's wedding this weekend in SC. DH thinks he's nuts.

I wish my sister was evacuating. She's probably a mile back from the beach but that's too close for comfort in my book. The house is single story so she can't go up. I'm less worried about my brother. He's 15 miles back from the beach and the closest river is several miles away. I think my sister should consider going to my brother' house until the worst is over. She still has time to change her mind but that's unlikely. I've been through several hurricanes and the worst part is waiting for it to arrive. Original reports said it would make landfall today and now it's pushed back until late Friday or early Saturday. The waiting wears on your nerves.0

I have friends in Wilmington who chose not to evacuate. I've only been close to one that did not make landfall but the effects were enough for me to tell me to not take chances on one that did.0

We lived through both Agnes and Eloise when we were in central PA. You wouldn't think of central PA as being areas to flood, as land locked as it is. But the heavy rains can still cause flooding. We were actually ordered to evacuate during Eloise. We didn't. We lived in a townhouse complex with 12 units and we spent the time emptying everyone's basements instead because during Agnes the basements of those units had been completely filled. We got about 2 feet of water during Eloise.
The closest we ever got to evacuating was Three Mile Island. We were all packed. My car was in the shop. DH was at work at the hospital. So I was sitting alone in the townhouse (no pets permitted so that was pre-cats) with no transportation with our packed belongings watching the news.0 -

I remember several hurricanes as a child when I lived in CT. To me, it was a day off from school, heavy winds and rain. we never had any damage. Afterwards, my dad took us on a drive to see areas inland from us that had heavy flooding. I mostly remember up heaved sidewalks and lots of stuff the flood waters had piled up.
When I moved to the Cape, DH was still working in CT. He was a few years short of an early retirement. He'd been up for the weekend and we made some hurricane preparations. I sent him back to CT to be with his mom. She was in her late 80s and all alone. I decided I was better alone than leaving MIL.
Hurricane Bob hit the next day and it was pretty scary. The funny thing was CT got next to no storm but the forecast had predicted they'd get hit.We had birch trees planted at the back corner of the house. I was on the second floor and I could hear those trees hitting the corner of the house. I was waiting for windows to shatter but they held. The power went out and was out the better part of a week. Lots of trees went down but we got lucky. We had a wooded area that ran behind the house. The wind swept through there and knocked a lot of trees down in there but we only got a lot of branches down in the yard. During clean up, we discovered lots of wasps had nests in tree root. The nests were destroyed and those wasps were furious. They stung anyone they could get as we raked up debris. We lost all the food in the refrigerator/freezer. Getting it cleaned out was a nasty job. And Bob was only a Cat 2!
From that experience, I'd have the car packed and would leave if I was in an evacuation area. I wouldn't choose to go through another one. I think how foolish people are who stay as a pride thing that they can weather a hurricane. I hope Florence weakens and doesn't cause a great loss of life.0 -
Helene - have you heard from your siblings?0

I made a quick stop at the grocery store today. In the parking lot there was a small crowd gathered around an open car trunk. Turns out it was shoppers who saw this woman loading an entire cart full of cases of birch beer into her trunk and stopped to wonder "what the heck?"
She was explaining it was on sale for $2 a case and she loves it. She was also says it's PA Dutch. I'm not so sure about that. I grew up pretty "Deutschy" and I've never had birch beer. Wikipedia says it is common in the NE US and Newfoundland. That's a lot broader that PA dutch country.
Anyway I'm making BBQ for supper and smelling that always makes me think of home. Now THAT's Dutch! (the way we make it anyway)0
