I made a quick stop at the grocery store today. In the parking lot there was a small crowd gathered around an open car trunk. Turns out it was shoppers who saw this woman loading an entire cart full of cases of birch beer into her trunk and stopped to wonder "what the heck?"

She was explaining it was on sale for $2 a case and she loves it. She was also says it's PA Dutch. I'm not so sure about that. I grew up pretty "Deutschy" and I've never had birch beer. Wikipedia says it is common in the NE US and Newfoundland. That's a lot broader that PA dutch country.

Anyway I'm making BBQ for supper and smelling that always makes me think of home. Now THAT's Dutch! (the way we make it anyway)

We had birch beer soda growing up but it was one of those flavors we'd buy now and then. It wasn't a regular purchase. I think my dad might have liked it and would buy it once in a while I probably haven't had it in 40 years. The flavor reminded me a lot a sarsaparilla. I probably couldn't tell the difference in a blind taste test. You probably never had that flavor either. I much more of a Diet Coke or a root beer fan.

Helene - have you heard from your siblings?
My brother sent an email around noon saying the storm had just started about an hour before. he still had power then and winds were 20-30 mph. It's probably higher than that by now.
I texted my sister around 1 and she was doing okay. She still had power then and was doing okay. I'm hoping they have that kid of experience throughout the storm.

You're right - I never had that either. Actually I'm not much for soda. The only and only exception being root beer.

That must have been a baby bear. Mama probably would have had the cat for lunch if she could catch him. LOL.

We are back home from the beach. I am still sick but finally beginning to improve. Yesterday was rough, making the final part of the drive and feeling the worst I had all week. I think I walked in the door and face planted on my bed without moving for 2 hours. Poor DH had to unload everything, though he said he didn’t mind. Today has been better so hopefully I’m on the mend at last.

My brother’s visitation is tonight and the service will be tomorrow afternoon. Due to old grudges and family drama, my sister and I were told we aren’t welcome to attend, so I will honor those wishes. The last thing I would want is to be the cause of any more drama or heartache for those who loved him, despite various family members who have urged us to attend anyway. It’s a sad situation and I wish I could say I’m surprised at being told not to attend, but it really didn’t surprise me at all. My sister is having a harder time with it than me, but she’s always worn her emotions on her sleeve much more than I do.

I'm sorry sorry that your relatives asked you not to come to the funeral. That's pretty harsh. It's big of you to do what they asked. If your brother is being buried rather than cremated, perhaps you and your sister could visit the grave site together after enough time has passed so you wouldn't run into those who excluded you. Perhaps you could send his widow a letter of condolence. Just offer sympathy without mentioning whatever led to the estrangement. She'll either reply or she won't. But you'll have let her know that you care.

Pam - I'm so sorry for both you and your sister. People can certainly be petty even at times they should be embracing all the family they can get.

Pam--Such a sad situation made even more stressful.

I'm on the way to have a cystoscopy done which will involve an hour and a half of travel one way during heavy rain. I'm taking extras in case it gets so bad that flooding occurs in low lying areas where the water backs up to cover the road.

Jean - here's hoping for a safe trip and good results both!

I had p/t Thursday and Friday and again today. The one complaint I have about p/t is that they don't make you standing appointments. When I went before, I went every Tues/Thurs/Sat at the same time.

That does seem strange you can't get a standing appointment. I would think mot patient would want a set time so they could plan around treatments.
Jean, I hope you do okay on the drive with the rain. is it from Florence? Good luck with the test.
Just back from DH's laser eye treatment. He's still dilated so it's too soon to tell if his vision is clearer.

Thank you all for your kind and supportive comments. I do appreciate them but most of all, I appreciate your friendship and concern.

I really don’t recommend the bronchitis and stress diet, but it does seem to be quite effective. I came back from vacation weighing less than before I left, despite not attempting to diet at all while I was away. I’ve continued to drop since arriving home and am now down a total of 18 pounds since starting my weight loss efforts. Also, the constant coughing is really toning my midsection.

Jean, good luck with the procedure and trip. I hope you don’t encounter any problems driving in the rain.

Maryanne, my PT appointments were never set up as standing times either. Usually, they would encourage me to make all of my appointments at one time, but due to previously scheduled appointments for other patients, mine would have to be worked into whatever vacant slots the scheduler could find. This was a fairly large and busy practice. A smaller practice might have been able to accommodate scheduling standing appointments more easily. It didn’t bother me, but I can see where it might be more difficult for some people.

Folks around here go nuts prior to a storm - buying up milk, eggs, bread, toilet paper, etc. I call it nuts because in the almost 40 years we've lived here probably the longest period we ever had that we couldn't get to a store was 3 days.

When I saw the largest grocery store around had NO milk this morning that was my first assumption. Then I saw the signs. Turns out the lack of milk was Florence related but not due to local shopping. The lack of milk was due to a factory closed in North Carolina.

Luckily they still had my organic skim. I started buying that when I saw the expiration dates are always far out in the future (milk today doesn't expire until 10/28). The price is worth it - I used to pitch so much milk.

That video brought tears to my eyes. How wonderful the owner had been taped and someone was able to play it for the cat. When he embraced the IPAD, I lost it. You could see how much comfort the cat got from seeing hi person again.

That's not a bad idea. That cat was clearly grieving and got comfort from seeing and hearing the owner on video. Some of your cats may be that attached to you and would benefit from that extra comfort. Of course, DH would have to play it for them.

Yeah, there's that. I'm more worried about this providing food, water and clean litter. (Notice I'm not even hoping for vet visits.)

I'm starting to wonder if the swelling in my left hand/wrist will ever go down. I can't wear any of my watches or any of my wedding ring sets. The largest ring in my right hand collection isn't even large enough for my left hand. In other words, I have a pile of really expensive jewelry that I can't wear. This is after two rounds of steroids.

On the plus side the left hand finally works well enough to put on earrings.

Will you eventually be off the steroids. If so, maybe the swelling will go down. What does your doctor say about the swelling?

The steroids were to reduce the swelling. Just took them for six days each time. It's called a medrol dose pack. Six days with a reducing dose each day.

I don't see the doctor for another month. My guess is he'll say "be glad how far you've come". Of course it's possible he might put me on another round or two of steroids.

Off to p/t this morning. Work this afternoon.

Cat show setup tomorrow. I got 3 spaces. Once a year I like to take everything we own. Not just to look where we need refills but so that Saturday I can go to the storage unit and see what all has accumulated that isn't inventory.

Saturday to the storage unit. What I can do will be more limited than usual but I should be able to at least eyeball stuff. I also need to pull the raffle display that goes to the vet (and figure out when I can take the time to take it there).

    Sunday cat show.

    Monday back to work.

I've been turning down some projects. It seems like my calendar is super filled right now.

I'm thinking I wouldn't be too upset if this was my last month of p/t.

I'm there! Lady in the bank asked if DH and I were over 65 so we'd get free checking. we told her we're way over that. LOL
