2018--Striving to Make This Year Our Best Possible

Helene - that's a good idea about adding my name to the utilities. Probably worth doing anyway just in case. Especially since I always pay them.
If they want my name to be spelled the same everywhere, lotsa luck! My birth name was Mary Ann Allison but I started using Maryanne Allison in 11th grade (shocked the heck out of my dad when I passed the first paper up the aisle with my new name on it LOL). My legal name now is Mary Ann Dubbs. BUT almost everywhere I use Maryanne Dubbs. And there are a couple other variations floating around, on credit cards, e.g. Even my Medicare card and my CareFirst card have different spellings. I'm so used to ignoring all the different spellings because no one ever even blinks. If there was ever going to be a problem with those two cards it would have been during this wrist adventure.
Many times I've considered changing my name legally - to Maryanne Allison Dubbs - but since it seems no one cares how I spell it I've never bothered. Maybe when I retire.
It just frosts me to be referred to as Mary and always has! (childish I know)
When I applied to take a spouse's benefit on DH's social security (I'll switch to my own at age 70) I thought they'd want all kinds of verification. Instead, they just talked to me on the phone and then asked me to hand the phone to DH. They asked him a couple questions (luckily - and somewhat surprisingly - he knew the answers - and we were done!0 -
Maryanne, one of my best friends is named Mary Margaret, and like you, she absolutely hates to be called by her first name only. I don’t think it’s childish at all to have a preference about how you’re addressed. I’ve always hated being called Pammy and never hesitate to correct anyone who tries to call me by that.0
-
I hate it when people call me Helen. My name rhymes with Jean. I usually correct people who mess up my first name. Sometimes I'll let it slide if I'll never see that person again. DH will have a problem with his next license. He's always used A. Edward as his name. According to their requirements, his license would read Anthony E.
Maryanne you don't need an original birth certificate. You need one from a government agency, with a raised seal and a registration number. That's what I got. I had my original one issued when I was born but it didn't have a raised seal or number. They've probably given them numbers since 9-11. I think that's where all they ID requirements stem from.0 -
I looked at my credit cards and I also have Mary Anne Dubbs and Maryanne A Dubbs. LOL!
My memory is that Vital Check asked a couple very simple questions. I don't remember the details but I remember thinking anyone could get this birth certificate. Sort of makes the whole ID system seem like a farce.0 -
Pam - Pammy? Really???? I'd never think of that name in connection to you.0
-
I've never known anyone named Pam who was called Pammy. That sound like a name you'd call a 5 year old. The questions sound simple but I also had to upload a copy of both sides of my driver's license to get the certificates. So there's more security than you'd think.0
-
My dislike of being called Pammy stems from when I was a teenager and we had neighbors with a 3 year old with the same name as me, but they routinely called her Pammy. This child was the brattiest child I’ve ever encountered. I babysat for the family once and vowed never again because she was so poorly behaved. In fact, I rarely babysat any kids after that. I was traumatized, lol!0
-
As a child, I swung wildly back and forth between "why don't I have a nickname?" and "why don't people name their kids what they intend to call them?"
My dad calls me "MA" which is the closest thing to a nickname I've ever had.
DH worked with a Mary Ellen for awhile and during that period I got called "Mary Ellen" a lot but that doesn't count as a nickname. LOL!0 -
My occupational therapist was thrilled - and admittedly a little puzzled - at how much progress I made in the last month. I think they are used to people doing a little less progress every month that goes by. I thought today might be my last day so I went equipped with a thank you card. But we agreed I'd go once a week for another month. I like that I'll be able to check in on my progress and get questions answered. I've actually thought about suggesting I do self-pay once a month for the next six months. That might be overkill.0

My friend Mary Margaret often introduces herself as MM and her grandkids call her Emmy. I think a nickname you choose for yourself is more acceptable than one that others assign to you. I’ve never had or wanted a nickname, personally. I like my first name, but hate my middle name. I almost never use it or tell anyone what it is.0
-
Apropos of nothing - I started watching old How I Met Your Mother episodes during the summer hiatus and I'm finishing them up. Just saw the one where Ted realizes he never should have told Barney his middle name is Evelyn.
I asked my dad once where his middle name came from. He doesn't know. Can you imagine not being curious about your middle name?
Overall, I'd have to say I don't really get the purpose of most middle names.0 -
Boy, there are a LOT of major authors with books coming out this month. I have to decide what I want on Kindle and whether I'm ready to go back to reading anything on paper. That was too hard to do with one hand.0

I've never had a nickname either. What could you make out of my first name? Hell? I don't think so. My sister's name is Margaret and she goes by Peggy. She hates it if anyone calls her Peg. Our nieces call her Auntie Em (M) calling to mind the Wizard of Oz. She likes that and I think it's cute.0

I just finished the new J.D. Robb book, Leverage in Death. I thought it was much better than the last couple in that series, which I’ve always enjoyed. In fact, it’s one of the few that I will pay full price to get the books as soon as they are available.
I just came back from having a drink and dinner with a friend who is having a hard time due to the Kavanaugh nomination. She was sexually abused as a child and this has been very triggering for her. She’s really having a lot of anxiety around this and other personal issues and needed a sympathetic ear, which I was happy to provide. I hate that she’s having such a hard time right now, but there isn’t much I can offer her besides just trying to be available to listen. I hope he’s not confirmed, but I fear that he will be.0 -
Hearing Trump mock Dr Ford at a campaign rally was appalling. I'll bet a lot of abuse survivors are having a hard time with all of this. It must bring back flashbacks of what happened to them. And Trump's comments show why women don't come forward or file charges. Dr Ford was so brave in her testimony and then she gets mocked!! Disgusting.0

I read the new J D Robb immediately and then gave it to a friend who read it immediately. I seldom read Nora Roberts but she can keep writing the J D Robb books as long as she wants!
For some reason right now I'm doing beach reading. I bought the Riversong trilogy from one of those daily bookbub emails and am proceeding to steadily work my way through Tess Thompson's books. So not what I usually read but for some reason I'm into it.
Helene - yes finding you a nickname could be tough.
Jean - have you dried out at all? We had a beautiful day yesterday.
Pam - I'm glad you were able to provide some support for your friend.
I read a great line the other day. The Brock Turners of the world grow up to be the Bret Kavanaughs who make the rules for the Brock Turners. Sort of sums it up. We are seeing the elite boys club at its worst.
I've worked with some of them, unfortunately. Did NOT marry one of them, thank goodness.
Apparently Trump has consciously decided to give up on college educated white women. That's the only way I can explain this latest mocking of a perfectly reasonable, courageous white professional woman. I simply cannot listen to Trump. I usually let Chris Cizzilla tell me about it. Here's his sardonic take on the Mississippi speech:

I've been super busy this week. We have had sunshine which is very welcomed but that doesn't stop night coming earlier and earlier. I saw this and couldn't resist it as I had a night last night in which I didn't sleep so well.

I had a couple of those nights myself this week. And no coffee was involved. Did you work this week?0
-
Yes, I worked every day...and by the time I got home and did things here, I just didn't have the energy to post.0
-
Jean - I copied that for DH.0

The 2018 hero dog awards. These stories are amazing. I need to be occasionally reminded there is goodness in the world:

Saturday night my firm threw a retirement party for one of our bosses. His band played. At one point they insisted we all take a percussive instrument and play along. I'm third from the left. I think the point of this particular photo was to show one of my colleagues checking his phone.
