I'm down 5 pounds since 10/1. Slow but sure (hopefully).

My biggest struggle right now is the "bites". A "bite" of DH dinner. A "bite" because I'm hungry in mid-morning. A "bite" because I'm hungry in the afternoon. Etc etc etc....Certainly not the calories I was eating even a month ago but I feel like I should be dealing with it.

Maryanne, Kudos on your progress. I may be a bit sporadic on posting. I'm using a library computer. My laptop is acting up again and this time is probably fatal. I can perhaps use my phone but I find posting on such a small screen pretty hard. And I'll have to start logging food from scratch again. I find it almost impossible to do that by phone.

Maryanne, you probably already know some of these strategies, but here are some ideas that might help you win the battle of the “bites”. While preparing DH’s dinner, chew some gum or suck on a sugar free candy so you can’t easily take a bite of his meal. When you’re hungry between meals, try drinking a glass of water, or keep some cut up veggies handy to snack on. Tell yourself if you’re still feeling hungry after drinking the water, then you can move on to the veggies. Also, I find it helpful to brush my teeth after a meal. Having that clean feeling and toothpaste taste in my mouth works like a signal to my stomach that the kitchen is closed, lol!

Helene, I’m sorry about your computer’s demise, and the ramifications. Will you be shopping for a new one to replace it?

I can't believe how many people use only a smart phone. I have a volunteer who wrote a section of the newsletter for awhile. Then her computer died and she did it on her phone for awhile. I had to proof but it was amazing how well she did.

Being reminded is great - thanks! No reason I couldn't try those.

I know I eat from boredom more than anything. I think it's a downside of working from home.

This month I've been following a simplified spreadsheet. Just generally cutting back. I think for November I should probably start going back to my more detailed spreadsheets that actually track calories.

Now that I can lift I also need to get into the basement and start organizing my diet food stash. Some of it is buried. DH picked stuff up off the floor during the last "flood". It's usually my job to put it all back but I couldn't because I couldn't lift.

I can't have "packet day" until I can get to the packets. LOL!

Get DH to help you with the basement lifting. You're not that long out of PT. You don't need to over stress your arm with heavy lifting. Remind DH that you need that arm to cook his dinner.
I will be shopping for a new computer. The problem this time is software related. My Internet connection seems to have disappeared. I click on Google or Explorer and nothing happens. The computer is 9 or 10 years old and has Windows 7 so it's probably time to upgrade. I get overwhelmed by the number of choices so that makes shopping a pain. And without access at home, I can't really browse the choices. I'll probably head to Best Buy before we head south and see what they have. I'm on a library computer right now.

I don’t even use a laptop anymore. I’ve gotten used to using my iPad for everything I do now. If I did a lot of keyboarding or spreadsheets I’d need a laptop again, but for my purposes an iPad works fine. DH has a laptop that he uses so we do have one, but I almost never use it for anything. It has a newer version of Windows that I find very confusing. It took him a long time to get used to it, too, but now he does ok with it.

There are six computers in this house that are accessed somewhat regularly: my work lap top, my every day computer, DH's every day computer, the computer I use to write the CROM newsletter (newer machines won't run the software), DH's lap top which he bought but never uses (occasionally updates), and the ancient machine I use to run CROM's accounting (still on MS-DOS).

There is also a backup to the machine that runs the CROM newsletter for when that one eventually dies.

For Christmas I want to ask for a backup to the DOS machine.

The guys from the electric company were outside one day and said something like "we'll give you a minute to power down your computer before we do anything". To which I replied can you make it a longer break - I have six to power down. At which point they looked at me like I have six heads and muttered something unintelligible.

But I've got no interest in a smart phone. Go figure.

I have a love hate relationship with my phone. I'm glad I can stay in touch with It but I still haven't figured out how to Use many of the functions. My family tell me to get a tablet. Maybe I will go that way.

I’ve had an iPhone 5 for about 3 years now and like it a lot. I went to a free class at the Apple store to learn about some of its features and found it extremely helpful. They offer a lot of different classes that are free and well worth the time, IMO. I want to take some more but currently the store that is close to me is closed for renovations. Maybe after it reopens I’ll get around to doing that. DH needs to upgrade his phone as he is using the iPhone 4 that I had previously. It still works fine, but Apple no longer upgrades the software for it and many apps require newer versions of the iOS operating system than his phone has. So that is driving him to (reluctantly) conclude that it may finally be time for an upgrade.

Work-wise nothing happens by spur of the moment phone calls any more. Everything is email and planned conference calls.

I've never liked chit chatting on the phone.

Put those two together and my Consumer Cellular flip phone for emergencies in the car is more than fine for me.

I love computers, I love my Kindle, I'm learning to enjoy the Kindle fire but still can't get interested in phones. I've learned to accept it. LOL!

I'M not a phone chit chat person either. I live email because I can go back to a conversation and review what aI said and can add to it.
We're expecting a Nor'easter tomorrow. We could lose power. I did all my outside errands today so I can stay inside tomorrow.

That storm came through here and wasn't too bad. I hope it isn't too bad when it gets to you.

We're getting gusty winds. DH had a trash can full of leaves on the deck waiting to go to the landfill. The wind blew the lid off and now the leaves are all wet. Looks like a small flower pot was broken too. If that's all. I'LL count us lucky.

Jim Carrey accepting his BAFTA award:

"Almost half of America at this moment believes there is a sinister deep state diabolically plotting ... to what?” Carrey asked. “Give them health care?”

    Trump:

If the Tree of Life synagogue had an “armed guard inside ... they would have been able to stop them,” Trump told reporters. “Maybe there would have been nobody killed except for him,” he added, referring to suspected gunman Robert Bowers

I've been missing in action simply because I've been working everyday except Thursday and Friday when a friend and I went on a road trip. I had some excitement this morning when looking at the kitchen floor. I spotted water on the floor and checked under the cabinet. The pipes had sprung a leak. Now, to get it repaired.

This is one of the spots we visited. It is famous for Bridge Day which attracts around 100,000 people to watch over 300 people jump from the bridge. It is the longest single arch bridge in the Western hemisphere. Despite it being about two hours from me, I've never been there since it was built in late 70s. A fun thing to do is a Bridge Walk which is done via the supporting beams under the bridge but only for those who have no fear of heights.

If you want to do something fun and see beautiful scenery, the Bridge Walk is possible. People used to sneak on and do this until it was decided to so it legally with safety features added:

Jean - sorry about the leak! Did you actually walk across the bridge?
  • KonaKat
    KonaKat Posts: 3,411 Member
No, I didn't walk across the bridge. In addition to walking across the underneath of the bridge, there are two overlooks. The pic was taken from the first one. The other one is way down the hill which means it is easy to go down but difficult to come back up without numerous stops and rests. There is a sign warning people of this and most people read the sign and didn't go down to the lower one.

I looked at the video and noticed the gear-like things that were the bridge's expansion joints. I can't believe people jump off that bridge but there are thrill seekers who do things like that and hope the chute opens. I think there have been four deaths.

So armed guards inside houses of worship are his answer to preventing mass shootings? And his hate speeches are blameless? If he really believes what he says, he's completely clueless.
