Part of (my) "insight" (and others may of course have different insights) is that many dieters attempt to over-restrict.
And there is a honeymoon period during which we can do that.
But then reactions can set in pretty hard often leading to discontinuing the effort.
The problem actually being much more closely associated to the over-restriction than to anything else.
over-restriction both in terms of total calories and in terms of what is "allowed" to be consumed

Of course your fitbit will not (always) be super accurate.
But assuming that it is totally useless is guaranteed to be more wrong than assuming it is SOMEWHAT in the ballpark.
And it is fairly easy to double check on it.

You've had your logging over the past two to three months right? You know your total calories-in as logged.
You've had your fitbit and you can go and export on a monthly basis your calories-out, according to fitbit. (I can help you find the info if you don't know how)
You know your weight change and that it is "worth" 3500 Cal of difference per lb of weight change (more or less; but hey, 3500 is good enough for government work!)
You have a long enough time period and you can also use your weight trend to avoid skewing your estimates with spurious water weight changes.

Therefore you can estimate an approximate error for your [individualized logging+particular fitbit] combination!

I was lucky and things were pretty spot on for me, but even if they aren't you can get something more actionable than "I don't trust it"

Great to see your numbers, Dante! Your updates bring such a sense of constant steadiness to this process - though I'm sure it probably just looks like that from this side of the screen.

@conniewilkins56 Here's hoping! I'm going to significantly increase my water intake this week. That is the one major area I struggle with. Sometimes I go days without drinking water or much of anything else. I typically have a cup of coffee in the mornings and sip on an energy drink all throughout the day at work, and I may have a glass a sugar free juice in the evenings or maybe nothing at all. My body has to be dehydrated. I'm hoping that helps.

Let's refuse to let the scale numbers get the better of our motivation.

@lauriekallis Here Here! I have many times in the past done that very thing and have given up. Not this time. This time I'm looking at all the small wins and setting much more realistic short term goals so I don't get quite so disappointed when these stalemates happen. For example, even though my weight was pretty much stagnant all last week, I'm congratulating myself on the fact that I was still 2.9 lbs under the goal I set for myself for January. Our bodies do weird things sometimes.. I'm not going to let the scale defeat me this go round.

I think long plateaus make people give up, too….you work so hard and eat less calories and the scales stay on the same number!….drives me nuts!

Dkr you are doing really good….glad to see you posting!….this is a great group of Losers!

Living in the south, drinking a lot of water, tea, and diet drinks is not a problem…I always have a glass or can in my hand….

I have a doctors appointment the end of Feb. and blood work is due…hoping all of my numbers are still as good as they were in June….wish I could take off the 25 lbs I have gained since then…realistically I might get ten off if I behave!….no binges!

Has anyone/everyone gotten their Fitbit year in review for 2021?

I was surprised a tiny bit.

Sleep was weak--but better than I thought--at 6.2 restful hours and an 83 average score.

I was surprised to have had a full 40 days, 11% of the year, with no exercise logged at all. Not even a 15 minute walk. If you had asked me I would have said that it's only an occasional day where I don't move at all. Yet, between this that and the other... it added up to 40 days of no exercise logged.

The flip side is that I did have at least 15 minutes of moderate exercise logged on the other 325 days, so that was good.

Average activity was down a bit but not tanked @ 17,364 steps a day on average.

If you were to have asked me, I would have pegged it slightly higher, which shows that I continue to need to compare my perceptions to outside metrics😹

@PAV8888 Holy smokes! The daily goal I set for myself is 7,500 steps and I still don’t hit that most days.. even when I walk a couple miles in a day. Please share… how do you average over 17K steps a day? Inquiring minds want to know because I’m definitely feeling like a slacker.
