It is not something I'm doing consciously. I have my goal set at 2 pounds a week and that gives me 1350 cals per day. There are days I struggle to eat at least 1000 cals. Sometimes I have cheese cubes or mixed nuts at the end of the day just to get enough to close the diary. I also generally do not eat back any exercise calories my Fitbit gives me. One, because I don't trust those numbers and two, because sometimes I struggle to reach 1000 without trying to add those in also.
I am not sure why I quit trying to lose weight the 2 times before. I think I got tired of logging & weighing everything. I also didn't have any real reason that I wanted to do it other than I hated the way I looked. Now I have other reasons and more determination to get to goal this time.
Thank you for the insight.5 -
Part of (my) "insight" (and others may of course have different insights) is that many dieters attempt to over-restrict.
And there is a honeymoon period during which we can do that.
But then reactions can set in pretty hard often leading to discontinuing the effort.
The problem actually being much more closely associated to the over-restriction than to anything else.
over-restriction both in terms of total calories and in terms of what is "allowed" to be consumed
Of course your fitbit will not (always) be super accurate.
But assuming that it is totally useless is guaranteed to be more wrong than assuming it is SOMEWHAT in the ballpark.
And it is fairly easy to double check on it.
You've had your logging over the past two to three months right? You know your total calories-in as logged.
You've had your fitbit and you can go and export on a monthly basis your calories-out, according to fitbit. (I can help you find the info if you don't know how)
You know your weight change and that it is "worth" 3500 Cal of difference per lb of weight change (more or less; but hey, 3500 is good enough for government work!)
You have a long enough time period and you can also use your weight trend to avoid skewing your estimates with spurious water weight changes.
Therefore you can estimate an approximate error for your [individualized logging+particular fitbit] combination!
I was lucky and things were pretty spot on for me, but even if they aren't you can get something more actionable than "I don't trust it"

If the first 5 or 6 months of a diet are the honeymoon phase, I must have been married many times!….currently I am on my 12th or 20th honeymoon!….lol6

Great to see your numbers, Dante! Your updates bring such a sense of constant steadiness to this process - though I'm sure it probably just looks like that from this side of the screen.4

The countdown is actually down today. Man this is scary though - my mind flashed from WOOHOO when I saw the drop on the scale to - damn, that means I'll be bouncing up like mad tomorrow and frustrated as all get out. IF that is the case - I better be happy for todays lower number

I haven't shared anything since the 24th because the numbers are being frustrating.
1/21/2022 234.4
1/22/2022 235.6
1/23/2022 233.4
1/24/2022 232.8
1/25/2022 233.4
1/26/2022 233.4
1/27/2022 233.8
1/28/2022 233.8
1/29/2022 234.4
The 24th was the lowest I've seen for a lot of years. Then I seem to be holding water or waste or something because I'm back up to the weight of the 21st now. I have not overate or anything like that so it can't be real weight. There were some days with more carbs and sodium. Hoping to see a nice whoosh soon. My goal for January was 235 and I'm still below that but I would like to be lower.5 -
@Americanbabydoll You are doing great! I’ve had the same issue this week. I was at a 10 lb loss mid week and gained a pound the next day and kept hovering between a 0.5 to a 1 lb difference all week but I couldn't get it back to the 10 lb loss #. Then I had a high calorie day yesterday for the first time and lost that that weight plus a little more when I weighed in this morning.. go figure! Unfortunately it was the day after my official weekly weigh-in on Fridays to my stats won’t show it yet when I log my numbers. Hopefully this week both of our weights will behave and our numbers will drop. Keep up the good work!6

I am doing the same thing!….up 2 down 2 all week….hopefully it will all go away next week!6

Nice numbers DKR & ABD.
Like Connie, I've been in the same boat. Still can't get back to the lowest weight I hit on the 21st. Though almost every day has been a healthy deficit.
It is just the nature of the beast sometimes - and I can't help but think that weeks like this can be the downfall of many weight loss regimes.
Let's refuse to let the scale numbers get the better of our motivation.5 -

@conniewilkins56 Here's hoping! I'm going to significantly increase my water intake this week. That is the one major area I struggle with. Sometimes I go days without drinking water or much of anything else. I typically have a cup of coffee in the mornings and sip on an energy drink all throughout the day at work, and I may have a glass a sugar free juice in the evenings or maybe nothing at all. My body has to be dehydrated. I'm hoping that helps.2

@lauriekallis Here Here! I have many times in the past done that very thing and have given up. Not this time. This time I'm looking at all the small wins and setting much more realistic short term goals so I don't get quite so disappointed when these stalemates happen. For example, even though my weight was pretty much stagnant all last week, I'm congratulating myself on the fact that I was still 2.9 lbs under the goal I set for myself for January. Our bodies do weird things sometimes.. I'm not going to let the scale defeat me this go round.4 -
I think long plateaus make people give up, too….you work so hard and eat less calories and the scales stay on the same number!….drives me nuts!
Dkr you are doing really good….glad to see you posting!….this is a great group of Losers!
Living in the south, drinking a lot of water, tea, and diet drinks is not a problem…I always have a glass or can in my hand….
I have a doctors appointment the end of Feb. and blood work is due…hoping all of my numbers are still as good as they were in June….wish I could take off the 25 lbs I have gained since then…realistically I might get ten off if I behave!….no binges!4 -
Patience and willingness to keep on trucking ... effort amplified by time eventually equals results👍4

Has anyone/everyone gotten their Fitbit year in review for 2021?
I was surprised a tiny bit.
Sleep was weak--but better than I thought--at 6.2 restful hours and an 83 average score.
I was surprised to have had a full 40 days, 11% of the year, with no exercise logged at all. Not even a 15 minute walk. If you had asked me I would have said that it's only an occasional day where I don't move at all. Yet, between this that and the other... it added up to 40 days of no exercise logged.
The flip side is that I did have at least 15 minutes of moderate exercise logged on the other 325 days, so that was good.
Average activity was down a bit but not tanked @ 17,364 steps a day on average.
If you were to have asked me, I would have pegged it slightly higher, which shows that I continue to need to compare my perceptions to outside metrics😹4 -
Average activity was down a bit but not tanked @ 17,364 steps a day on average.
@PAV8888 Holy smokes! The daily goal I set for myself is 7,500 steps and I still don’t hit that most days.. even when I walk a couple miles in a day. Please share… how do you average over 17K steps a day? Inquiring minds want to know because I’m definitely feeling like a slacker.2
