Thanks for the kind words guys and way to go ABD!

I'm certainly not going anywhere, maintenance is even more important for me than reaching an arbitrary goal. Onwards!

Based on my trend data for the past 70 days, I've had to reduce my activity factor from 1.67 (which it's been since almost the beginning, 500+ days ago) to 1.54. This shaves over 150 calories a day from my daily calorie budget.

    Grrrrrrr.

I'm wondering if I've become more indolent and am burning less NEAT...although it certainly doesn't feel like it! I guess I AM doing less gardening, given that it's been so hot this summer. Maybe a little less housework too...

However, intentional exercise remains at least 90 minutes of walking per day at a pace of about 3.5 mph, plus at least 4 hours of intensive cycling per week (for which the calorie burn is measured by power meters and definitely meets the criteria for 'intensive exercise' (i.e. pushing between 2 and 3 watts per kg of bodyweight). Plus I'm now hula hooping for at least 30 minutes a day.

When my activity factor was around 1.67 I was doing about the same amount of walking, less cycling, no hula hooping, and maybe a little more gardening, housework or general NEAT activity.

I'm having a hard time believing that 30 minutes of hula hooping and at least 50kms extra cycling per week don't offset a little slow down in NEAT activity.

But that's the conclusion I'm reaching....unless anyone has any better ideas.

My food logging remains as accurate as it ever was...every bite, sip, lick and nibble weighed and logged...

I guess I'd better dig out my gardening gloves and my duster and hoover....

remember that the goal is not activity for the sake of activity or activity for the sake of food (and I've definitely fallen into the second trap)

The aim of logging is to keep track of what is "an APPROPRIATE amount of food for YOUR GOALS given your activity at the time".

The aim of activity is health, happiness, an outlet, only somewhat food related -- but ideally not primarily food driven.

Don't worry Pav, the activity is done for pure fun, joy and enjoyment (the cycling and the hula hooping) or for utility and pleasure (the dog walking)....no exercise done (yet!) for eating reasons or for reasons of excess or obsession.

But I DO like the food-related side effect of all this pleasurable activity - i.e. getting to enjoy lots of yummy food. I don't do it for that reason, but I enjoy the by-product nonetheless.

I'm not planning to increase my intentional exercise to make up the calorie gap...that way madness lies! I like my current activities and don't want them to turn into a chore or a millstone around my neck. But I AM a bit grumpy about having fewer calories at my disposal.

Yeah, that is very important imho, it could send you into a nasty loop. I remember reading this article a little while back, it is still very relevant imo.

Dante that's a great article, and a useful reminder not to put too much reliance on exercise to compensate for calorie creep.

I actually think I may be guilty of the compensatory behaviour the article mentions - I think it's eminently possible that I'm more indolent when I'm not exercising, either because I've "earned a rest" or because I'm tuckered out. Given the importance of NEAT calorie burn - more important, over the long run (IMHO) than intentional exercise - this is not an insignificant side-effect of my exercise routine. It won't make me stop doing the activities I enjoy, but it will make me more mindful of how much I fidget and twitch the rest of the time.

I've been a bit in the exercise/low activity doldrums. Through the two years of pandemic my activity changed tremendously. First the shoulder injury which changed my activity drastically. I lost the activity of being a landscape designer for 6 months of the year - with lots of heavy home renovations throughout the winters. Switched it up for walking. At least 4 hours a day. Mainly because I could (work kind of went out the window) and because it kept me sane. Then came shoulder surgery last year which made most activity feel uncomfortable for awhile - even walking felt a bit scary. Then I got used to not really moving so much or doing so much and just can't seem to ramp it back up.

All that activity certainly burned more calories - but it also did something to my eating patterns. Exercise always has. Makes no sense but the more active / busy I am the less I eat. The activity seems to do a great job of keeping those dopamine levels up.

I picked up a good case of plantar fascitis the beginning of June - and somehow managed to lose my two big toenails ??? (not really sure why). Feet are easing/healing up now. I can wear closed toed shoes again. Was thinking - okay - get to it - walk walk walk. But maybe not so fast.

I was ridiculously healthy feeling when I walked that much, but, it isn't sustainable.

Before I logged on today I was thinking that I should aim for 10,000 steps a day. Where I started two years ago but quickly ramped it up to 20,000 most days. No being extreme allowed this time around.

Moderation always seems out of my reach. But I'm going to try really hard to find it this time.

Still haven't worked out the eating situation - but I've remained stable for the past month - which is a major accomplishment.

Hopefully I have another 30 or so years left on this planet - I think it will take me that long, at least, to figure this all out :)

Whew, panic over - I've overlooked a glitch in my spreadsheet! Activity factor is actually 1.71, not 1.54 (so a slight improvement over my previous 1.67, not the grump-inducing material deterioration I originally thought).

Now I almost wish I hadn't done those 14 hours of intensive exercise yesterday... (heh heh, only joking Pav. No obsessive exercising took place!)

After eating untold calories of granola bars, wedding food, and airline pretzels, I came home weighing one pound less. Bodies are weird! Honestly it’s probably due to no access to my well stocked refrigerator and pantry. No grab and go eating in the house.

Good going, and yes, bodies are certainly very weird! Did you see any difference in your digestive system this past week?

Actually Dante it’s hard to judge my digestive system right now. I have stomach bacterial infection for which I finished up two weeks of massive antibiotics. Medicating while traveling was a chore. Possible ulcer but I get retested soon.
Has this affected my appetite? - NO! But I was told to avoid coffee (I don’t think so!) and raw foods for a while. Right now there’s no pain 👍.

Good result Yooly! Enjoy your well stocked pantry and refrigerator!

Dante, kudos on the 3 weeks of maintenance, and for being at the low end of your maintenance range! Are you enjoying the transition? I'm quite enjoying the process, though I'm more in what Pav calls maintenance-pushing-down rather than straightforward maintenance. Also known as inching dead-dead-slow towards a lower goal weight. I'm currently at a BMI of 25 and hoping to eventually reach 22.5 (6kg to go). I'm tentatively thinking I might get there by my birthday next year (end of May) but there's no rush as long as I'm lower on the 1st day of January than I am today.

    Keep us updated!

Thanks for the kind words. Well, so far it's been a breeze really, I just eat a little more and work-out a little more. I cannot lose too much more weight as it is, since my body fat numbers are pretty low now. I'd love to move sloooooowly towards a 25 BMI if I can though, we will have to see.

You are right, there is no rush. And I'm sure you will succeed!

Yooly I had an ulcer many years ago, caught it very early tho (got lucky for once). It really sucks, and yeah, medicating while on the move can be pretty aggravating. Speedy recovery!

Dante excellent results so far -- but keep on flying low and avoid melting the wax! How you can pull that in 999.99 degree weather is a different story to which I cannot offer relevant input! :anguished:

Meds really mess with ones weight! After finishing two weeks of antibiotics, my weight is suddenly up two pounds overnight. And doesn’t want to budge. Very discouraging because I am being careful. 😣
