I love the hashtags, including #FlyinTed and #FledCruz. Pretty tone deaf and the story keeps changing. According to the AP, it was a long-planned family vacation, but in his own statement Cruz said when the school’s were closed due to the bad weather he agreed to take his daughters to Cancun to stay with friends who were already there, because he was trying to be a good dad and make sure they all got there safely. Note that his daughters are 10 and 12, and his wife went as well. He then tried to make it sounds as if he had always intended to fly back the next day, but was caught in that lie when pictures of him in the Cancun airport surfaced with him standing under the standby board with his name listed. Also, he packed a rather large suitcase for an overnight trip. And finally, his original reservation was made public, showing that he had planned to return on Saturday. I guess tRump did get one thing right when he named him Lyin Ted Cruz.

We are still thawing out here, but things are slowly improving. So far, we don’t seem to have any burst pipes or leaks, so DH is starting to relax on that front. We go this afternoon to get our delayed second vaccination shots and will try to stop at the grocery store if it’s got supplies and isn’t crazy busy. I need to pick up a prescription there as well, if they have it. Many of the grocery stores have either been closed due to lack of power, burst pipes, and/or lack of merchandise due to disrupted supply chains.

I don't think Texans will be overly sympathetic with Ted Cruz. I loved the spots that showed his wife inviting others to join them in "getting away from the cold."

Further evidence of just how despicable Cruz is, they left their toy poodle alone in a dark house without heat. A security guard was supposed to let her out periodically.

We just returned from getting our second COVID vaccinations. On the way home we stopped at Walmart hoping to pick up some groceries. We were able to get most of what we needed, but there were a few things they didn’t have. There was absolutely no fresh produce, only skim milk, and no eggs. We stopped at another store closer to our house and found the rest of the items we needed, so we should be okay until the supply chain gets sorted out again.

Apparently the private school the Cruz children attend has rules about quarantining after travel that now other parents are insisting they follow.

Meanwhile Beto continues to get fantastic press. Wonder if Texas voters could do it over again if that race would have a different result.

Too bad Cruz has 4 years left to his term. I read about the dog too. The house was too cold for him but not for the dog???

And just when you think certain politicians couldn't sink any lower, they do!

I had my second COVID vaccination Friday afternoon. When I woke up yesterday I felt a little tired and achy. As the day went on I began to feel much worse, with chills and fever, headache, and severe body aches. I had no energy and was slightly nauseated. I finally got back in bed under my down comforter and a sleeping bag over that to try to get warm. After about 2 hours I went from thoroughly chilled to sweating and feeling like I was being roasted alive. Once I had cooled off, I began to feel a lot better, though still very tired. Today I’m feeling pretty normal, though still a little achy. DH was a little achy nd tired, but not as severe as my symptoms.

I’ve read that having a reaction to the vaccine is a good thing. It means your body’s immune system is working against Covid. It’s the antibodies from the first shot recognizing and responding after the second shot. Having the symptoms lessen so quickly shows it’s working. That’s great news.

It was just January 19th that President Biden had the candy light vigil on the Mall for 400,000. Just a month later and 100,000 more people have died. I saw a news report that it took 10 months for 300,000 deaths. In less than 2 months, an additional 200,000 more people have died. The people who had to have Christmas celebrations have paid a high price for those parties.

I read that the President is going to have another candlelight vigil.

I get so frustrated with the vaccination sites. I don't know what people are talking about that they just sit and refresh. Every single site here requires re-answering all the questions.

I don't know how well our state registration site is working now but I am thankful I was part of a designated group that didn't have to jump through hoops other than to let the head person know that I wanted the vaccine under the eligible category.

Our site seemed to work pretty well, although it was a little confusing when I got the response from them after signing up. Early on many people were signing up multiple times on the same site, which led to more confusion, but I think the county got it sorted out pretty quickly.

I had a routine doctor’s appointment this morning for a 6 month checkup. My GP requires 6 month checkups for hypertension patients. He said having all the symptoms I had after my COVID vaccine means I had a strong immune response and that it’s a good thing. I’m not sure I would have agreed on Saturday, but today I’m happy to hear that. He was happy with everything and declared me healthy.

I’m going to get my nails done in awhile and pick up prescriptions. It’s been 5 weeks since I last had my nails done and they look terrible. Worse, I’m having trouble doing much without fear of breaking them off down to the quick, so it’s definitely time.

Pam - I was surprised that my cardiologist (essentially the doc who diagnosed and treated my HBP) didn't want to see me for 12 months.

My nails are at the same stage as yours except they don’t look bad. They are too long and are at greater risk of breaking. My main problem is I don’t know if my nail salon is still in business. Amy was struggling to stay in business last May. She was behind in rent and the landlord wasn’t making any concessions. I have her cell number so if the salon is closed, I can call and see if she’s working for someone else. She had just bought new pedi chairs a couple of months before Covid. So many seasonal residents left early last year so business was pretty slow. I had the powdered manicure 5 weeks ago so it does look that bad but I have a lot of regrowth at the base of my nails.

I guess I'm lucky I've kept my nails cut short ever since I played as a guitar as a teen. LOL!

I started wearing artificial nails in 1993 and never looked back afterward. Before, I was always struggling with nails that split and cracked or peeled. I could never have all 10 of them at the same length and looking nice at the same time. I always noticed people’s hands and to me having ragged nails just looked very unprofessional. So getting my nails done was a gift for myself so that I always felt good about the way my hands looked. Vain, I know, but it makes me feel good.

While I was in the salon today I got into a discussion with a woman who was having a mani/pedi. I was waiting for one of the nail techs to finish and was sitting at a nail station near the pedi chair where she was receiving her services. She was complaining that President Biden hasn’t come to Texas yet to survey the damage. I said that I didn’t have a problem with it since the reason he hasn’t come is to avoid diverting necessary resources that could be better used to help residents. His visits require massive numbers of support personnel that could be better used helping people in need. She continued to say she needed help and wasn’t getting any. I politely asked what kind of help she needed. She said the ceiling in her apartment caved in because of burst water pipes in the room above and that it ruined everything in the room below. She and her husband and dog are currently staying in a hotel. Her main complaint seemed to be about having to stay in a hotel. I told her that I thought FEMA might help with that, now that the president has approved the emergency declaration and authorized their assistance. She replied that nobody was helping her, so I finally asked her where she had applied for help. Her answer? Nowhere. She then went on to tell me all about the million dollar home she used to own in a nearby suburb (and in this area that would be a very nice home) but now she lives in an apartment. She was wearing a lot of very nice jewelry and when she left she got into a fairly new Mercedes. Of course, the whole time she was going on about nobody giving her any help, the nail techs said nothing. I was thinking, every one of these people lost a week’s wages and tips last week in addition to enduring the exact same conditions and hardships as you, but none of them are whining that nobody is helping them. Some people are utterly clueless about how entitled they are.

I lost half a pound this week. Let's hope the tortoise wins the race because that's what it feels like some days. LOL!

I read something the other day that stuck with me. Someone saying she'd tried all the diets that claim you can eat to some mythical thing called "satisfaction" but she doesn't have that setting. She's either hungry or "will be sick if I take another bite". That's why weighing, measuring, and tracking calories are a forever thing with her. That really resonated in my head. Maybe the sooner my brain gets the idea that this is for life, the better. Can my brain get that message? That's the question!

Pam - the snarky part of me couldn't help thinking whether that woman voted for the now infamous Texas de-regulate fanatics.

It's sort of mind blowing how many people can't put themselves in another's shoes. There but for the grace of....
