    From the Baltimore Sun:

The Harford County Health Department canceled a COVID-19 vaccine clinic Friday at Patterson Mill High School in Bel Air after discovering that approximately 90% of the people who signed up did not meet eligibility requirements.

“About 1,000 people were not eligible to receive the vaccine,” said Molly Mraz, a spokesperson for the health department. “There’s no way we would’ve been able to call 1,000 people in a couple of hours to let them know they could not come to Patterson Mill, so we had to close the clinic today.”

A couple hundred eligible people who had signed up for Friday’s clinic were vaccinated at another site, Mraz said. The health department also sent links to other eligible people who had pre-registered with the department to get vaccinated but didn’t already have an appointment, so none of the doses went to waste, she said.

The issue highlighted a problem with link-sharing, Mraz said, which isn’t exclusive to Harford County. Health departments, hospitals and other places across the state offering the vaccine have found that, even though eligibility to receive one of the doses is limited to certain ages and occupations, people from outside those categories are scheduling appointments in the state’s PrepMod system.

It seems like whoever designed the registration system left out the step of adding a way to filter for eligibility requirements. That doesn’t seem like it would be that difficult to do. I know the system in use in my county had a series of questions that would determine one’s eligibility by age and underlying conditions. Even if the link to the registration site was shared, each person registered individually and had to have a unique phone number and email address.

What's weird is every web site here has tons of questions about medical conditions. None of which are currently relevant to Maryland's current vaccination criteria. I don't know if they are using it to prioritize people within age groups, putting in everything that may eventually be relevant, or something else but it is confusing. I haven't been able to figure it out either (although I confess I haven't donated a ton of time to it).

Apparently someone age 63 with severe COPD, e.g., can't get a vaccination but a perfectly healthy 65 year old can. Go figure!

I was pleased to learn yesterday that my niece was getting her second dose. She’s a healthcare worker who could have gotten it in December but she was reluctant then, saying she didn’t trust the science behind the way the vaccines were developed. I don’t know what changed her mind, but I’m glad she did.

Our state decided that category 1B would include those who are 65 and older, or ages 16-64 with underlying health conditions. I qualified because I’m over 65 and DH qualified because he has asthma and has had a heart attack. He isn’t 65 yet. Although we both qualified and were legitimately able to get the vaccine under the rules, I felt somewhat guilty that so many who are older and sicker than us are still waiting for theirs.

I just talked to the woman whose colonies I'm feeding. She is 76 and has cancer. She doesn't do computers or smart phone. I knew a friend was searching for her so I didn't get involved. She just got her first shot in a town south of Baltimore. So not convenient but a godsend.

Yay! My SIL called this morning and she’s decided she doesn’t want to do the trip we were planning in May after all! I am not disappointed since I don’t really enjoy traveling with her. Our annual family beach trip is more than enough travel time for me, lol!

Just finished out federal and state taxes. Last year we couldn't get 3-file to work but this year it did!

As if Maryland's vaccination problems weren't embarrassing enough (not to mention potentially deadly), now we have strip clubs opening because the owners sued. I kid you not!!!!

Elsewhere in the country. We have people teaching their kids to burn masks. We have Mississippi's governor on CNN trying to explain his decisions and revealing his complete lack of knowledge of the science. We have elected representatives who seem to think their only function is to make sure only rich white people are represented.

Obviously our schools have failed to teach the importance of science and the meaning of democracy. Or something.

Some days I wonder why I'm trying to lose weight if the world's just going to heck.

But I stuck to the plan today and have my food and spreadsheets set up for the week. Is there a kernel of hope in me somewhere??????

BTW Helene - do you read Pendergast (Preston and Child)? I just started the newest one and immediately noticed the references to Sanibel Island. This is his second case in Miami.

We’re still gathering information to send to the accountant. Our mail is being forwarded from MA so that adds a week at least to delivery. We’re missing a couple of 1099s. I’m getting a manicure today and DH has a cardiology check up this afternoon. Since we only have one vehicle here, we have to go together. He’ll read the newspaper during my appointment and I have a book since patients have to go in alone.

I was glad we didn't have to rely on the mail to send in our returns. We already got emails that both the IRS and the state have accepted our returns. Makes you wonder why they need you to send in paper copies of W-2's and 1099's when you file a paper return. Obviously they don't need them.

Building trust in coronavirus vaccines will require outreach from both scientists and evangelical leaders. And it is happening. Francis S. Collins — director of the National Institutes of Health and himself an evangelical — has been making an effective Christian case for coronavirus vaccination. Recently interviewed on the Christian Broadcasting Network, he said: “This is a ‘love your neighbor’ moment, where we all have a chance to do something not just for ourselves but for everybody around us.” From the side of the religious community, seminary professor Curtis Chang has created a video series that deals carefully and sympathetically with evangelical questions about the vaccines.

Our taxes are so simple they don't worry me at all. It's not like we're running a business or claiming any exotic deductions. Open the H&R Block program, put in the numbers from our W-2's and interest statements, click and done. I did have one entry for charitable and a last HSA entry but that's simple enough. I was a little surprised we got the e-filing to work this year but pleased since the mail is such a mess.

At work we got something mailed by the IRS in early February with a response date of 2/28! Little late don't you think? Luckily we'd already talked to them and responded.

Bad news this week - back to no SW egg beaters. Drat! I have NO idea why that makes my egg concoction SO much better than plain egg beaters but it does. When I've had my second shot maybe I'll check out some of the less common grocery stores around and see if I can find some to stash in the freezer!

I'm trying to work but Jack is sitting sprawled on my papers. Given his age and all that he's gone through (donated a kidney to our late Gordy, lost all his teeth, had his nose removed to help him breathe because his nasal passages are filled with eosinophils) I don't have the heart to make him move. If I leave for a few minutes, he'll probably get up.

Gas company is doing something in our street today so it's good I didn't have to go anywhere. I'm definitely moving my van tonight to make sure I can get out to feed the colonies tomorrow.

This evening DH and I will probably watch the second episode of Debris. We watched the first episode last week. We agreed we're not sure about our final verdict.

Dermatology visit was good. The thing I had removed on the back of my neck was a simple cyst. The biopsy was clear. The doctor came in and said the news is good and gave me an elbow bump. I go for a yearly skin check. I said maybe we’ll be able to go back to hand shakes next year. That’s strange that SW Eggbeaters aren’t available to you. I’ve seen them in multiple stores around here.

If I have time after we're vaccinated I'm going to go to a couple stores I don't normally go to and see if I can't find some to freeze.

Helene, if you are still searching for an appointment for the vaccine, you might consider signing up on a website called DrB. It matches unclaimed and soon to expire vaccines with people who agree to be on standby to receive them. Here’s a link to a story about the site: https://www.baltimoresun.com/coronavirus/ct-aud-nw-nyt-finding-leftover-coronavirus-vaccines-20210309-6h2wnqknwnhb7nnykekd4ptnxa-story.html

I just got an email from the hospital my primary care doc is associated with about an appointment. There's nowhere to click "I am taken care of". Hopefully if I don't sign up they'll infer that.
