Thought I'd check my weight and update my ticker one last time before my birthday next weekend when I plan to be very much off my diet!

Good job, Maryanne! You are so close!

Good luck and safe travels today, Helene. Maybe if you arrive a little early they will be able to give it you before your scheduled time, especially if you let them know you have to drive back afterward.

DH may be able to go with me. I was telling the AC guy about my drive and that I have to go alone so DH is here with them. He said he thinks he can finish by 3. If so, DH can come with me.

    That would be great!

I got an email today from the county offering a vaccination appointment. If it was Pfizer I might consider going and cancelling my second Walgreen's appointment since Thursday is 3 weeks and our second appointment isn't until next week but I clicked on the link and it's Moderna.

I don't know why I'm so anxious about the second dose. Maybe because they so obviously thought they were going to be doing Moderna (second appointments are 4 weeks) and they switched to Pfitzer.

Maryanne, I would stick with the appointment previously scheduled. Around here, everyone was required to get their second doses at the same place they got the first. I think for record keeping purposes that makes sense. Are you concerned that they won’t have your second dose when it’s due? It was my understanding that second doses are automatically reserved after a first dose is given. Or maybe that’s just how they did it here. Remember that there is also some leeway in the timing. You can get it anytime from 4-6 weeks after the first dose. Our second dose was delayed almost a week due to that horrible winter storm we had here.

DH is convinced there are shots with our names on them in the freezer. I admit I'm concerned. Just my anxiety kicking in. I know there's some time but the thought of searching for a second shot and it has to be Pfizer just rolls around in my head. Hopefully I'm worrying for nothing!

I think you’re worrying for nothing. As Pam said, I’ve read that there’s some flexibility if the second shot is delayed a bit. Stick with what you have. We got Moderna. While I was waiting for my shot, some people came in asking about Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Publix is scheduling weekend only J&J. People have to register on Wednesday mornings for those shots. I guess M/F appointments will be for Moderna. We left home yesterday at 3, ran into traffic and got to Okeechobee at 6:15. That was 30 minutes before my appointment. They took me shortly after arrival and I was back on the road at 6:45. That extra 15 minutes got us back to the better road before dark. The ride home was faster because we didn’t hit traffic. We were home by 9:15.

How are you feeling after your vaccination, Helene? I didn’t really have any side effects with my first shot (Moderna), but didn’t feel well for a day or two after the second.

I finalized the arrangements for the Florida trip. I guess I wore my SIL down until she finally agreed to the route and hotels that I had selected. Initially, she had us arriving in Miami, then driving to Fort Myers on the west coast of Florida to a resort she liked, then driving down to Key West, and finally back to Miami. That seemed like a lot of extra driving to me, especially due to the Fort Myers addition. I proposed instead that we drive down to Key West on the day we arrive in Miami, spend 2 nights, then work our way back up the keys to Key Largo. We will stay 2 nights in Key Largo, then 2 nights in Miami before flying home. That seemed like a much more logical route to me. We will do an all-day sailing, snorkeling tour in Key West that I’ve done before. We are still looking for a tour or activity to do in Miami. Key Largo will just be downtime for the beach or pool, I think.

I had just finalized all of the reservations for the trip when I got a text message from the husband of my friend who passed away a year ago from cancer. She passed on March 3rd and her family had planned to do a celebration of life gathering in the spring of last year. Then COVID struck and of course those plans were put on hold. The family is feeling ready to do it now and of course I want to attend. The wrinkle is that it will be held on the day I’m flying home from the Florida trip. My flight won’t get in until around 6:30, if it’s on-time, so I’m afraid I may have to miss the gathering. I’m considering trying to change my flight or even coming home a day earlier.

Pam - good luck on the trip! You're being beyond accommodating! Hopefully you get brownie points with DH. LOL!

Snorkeling? Like in the water? With fish? I love watching it on TV but ....

Wow, best laid plans going awry. That’s too bad about the timing of the memorial service. I hope you can work it out. SIL’s route made no sense. I live near FT Myers. Going from there, you’d have to drive about 50 miles to Naples. Then you have to drive across the state on Alligator Alley. It must be at least 75 miles across the state and there’s only one service plaza on that road. There are signs telling you to wait in your car if you break down and to wait for help to arrive. It’s probably not as bad as before people had cell phones and could call for help. Before that, you have to wait for a motorist driving the other way to alert the toll takers that you needed help or wait for a trooper to come along. And yes, there are gators in the canals that run alongside the road. On the other hand, it’s a straight shot from Miami to the Keys. Weather has been gorgeous so it’s a great time for a vacation.

I forgot to say I’m feeling fine. I had a little tenderness in my arm but Tylenol helped. I hope I do as well with shot 2. Even if I get side effects, I’m grateful to be vaccinated.

Maryanne, I’ve snorkeled several times and really enjoy it. I’m too claustrophobic to try scuba diving, but snorkeling doesn’t bother me. It’s been a few years since I’ve snorkeled and I probably need a new mask. I don’t even know where my old mask is if I have one. Most charter operators include equipment, but due to COVID, they recommend that you bring your own mask.

I really didn’t want to drive to Fort Myers on this trip. SIL enjoys driving, so she thinks nothing of adding in a lengthy drive. I don’t want to spend extra time sitting in a car when I could be sitting on or near a beach instead. Alternatively, we could have arranged to fly into Fort Myers but by the time she floated that idea we had already made our flight reservations to Miami.

I forgot to add, I’ve actually done this sailing and snorkeling tour before and it’s a lot of fun. The crew sail the ship out to some mangrove islands and launch several sea kayaks, then lead the group on an eco tour of the mangroves. Afterward they sail to another area where there is really good snorkeling. After an hour or so of snorkeling everyone returns to the ship and lunch is served. The ship is an older, single hull sailing vessel, which is fun. I think they usually draft some of the passengers to help out with raising sails and steering, if they want to participate.

Pam - didn't know you were claustrophobic too! It does sound like a fun trip. I have so little experience with boats/open water/etc. Looks interesting on TV but I think I'd be very hesitant in person.

Today's word of the day is chatoyant. Never heard that one. Having a changeable luster with an undulating narrow band of white light. Huh? I'm not even sure why that needs a word. The sentence is "There are also chatoyant medium-toned brown hardwoods and French doors to the backyard. " (from an article in Variety magazine)

I’m not truly claustrophobic in the way many people are, but the thought of being underwater for an extended period of time is very scary for me. At first when I was learning to snorkel I would panic a bit and have to tread water for a minute or two with my face out of the water until I could catch my breath. Eventually I got used to it and it doesn’t bother me anymore, but I still find the idea of scuba diving too frightening to consider. Also, I’m not a tremendously strong swimmer, so scuba diving doesn’t seem too smart to me. With snorkeling I never get very far from the boat or shore, plus flotation vests are always available if you want one, although in salt water they aren’t really needed.

DH and I did a submarine tour when we visited Aruba several years ago and surprisingly I did pretty well on that. It was a fairly small submarine with large windows on both sides. I forget what depth we went down to, but I do recall being very glad when we returned to the base and exited. It was an interesting ride and we did see lots of beautiful fish and coral, but it wasn’t interesting enough for me to work on getting over my fear of being underwater, lol!

I am probably among the most claustrophobic humans on earth. Submarine? I know I couldn't even do a cruise.

SIL was surprisingly cooperative about my change in plans. She will stick to the original plan and stay the last night in Miami on her own, while I will fly home Friday evening. I was able to change my flight and ended up with a $28 credit and a nonstop flight, which was a better flight than the one I was originally taking. That gets me home the night before the Celebration of Life gathering for my friend, so I will definitely be able to attend. And, bonus, after 5 days with SIL, we probably both will be happy to part ways, lol!

She's getting most of the vacation she wanted so it's good she's being flexible!

Sounds like the flight change worked out the best for both of you and the credit must have been a nice surprise. We got a call from our health practice in MA about scheduling us for Covid shots. We let them know we are all set down here so they can move on to the patients that still need help.

I hope Jean is ok. It seems like it’s been awhile since she posted anything. The last time she went a long while between posts she’d had an accident and was in the hospital, so it concerns me when we don’t hear from her.

I wondered the same thing. She doesn’t post every day but this has been a longer time than usual. Could she be away? This is probably spring break at her school.

Jean last posted on March 8th and didn’t mention a trip. I hope she’s just busy.
