I bet staying home and chilling was good for you! It's difficult to be on the go all the time. And also really difficult keeping on track. Portion sizes and watching the mindless eating sounds like a good plan. I think the portion sizes are good, because I just tend to eat whatever I've prepared, no matter the size. I was thinking about you yesterday: I made cauliflower "wings". I had got the idea after you said you'd made some and eaten too many, and I thought well, if I'm going to eat too much, it would be good if it was cauliflower!
I hope you have a great time with your niece and her daughter. It's lovely that you are doing all this family stuff.
I've had my doctor's appointment - bit of a mixture really. The thing is I've been getting light-headed spells for ages, and I also tend to have low blood pressure at those times, and sometimes a low pulse, and also pulse irregularities. My son took my pulse during one of those times and he was concerned about a particular irregular pattern, discussed it with the other doctors and thought it might be heart block and that I should really be going straight to hospital, lol! Anyway, the appointment focused on the various things that I'd put on the form, but really the main symptom I was worried about was that particular pattern.
My pulse was slow and irregular at the appointment, but not that particular pattern, and she didn't say anything when I mentioned heart block so I don't know if she's considering it. Anyway, I'm having blood tests, and have an ECG booked. But guaranteed that the pattern won't happen during the ECG!! I have been checking myself, and it is still happening from time to time.
I'm a little bit frustrated because it has been the same story all along with my heart in that it took years to get diagnosed, partly because the symptoms are never happening in a doctor's office!
Anyway, long explanation because I felt I was being a bit cautious about what I revealed last time (just after a colleague had issues with social media so it was in my mind!).

Vail i tried to reply yesterday but got locked out and had to go look up my password in my little book again to get back in... no wonder you have been worried with those symptoms you've been having!! im so glad she has at least ordered the blood work and ECG - but you're not wrong it seems when we do get to see a doc the symptoms we've been having mysteriously disappear while we are there! But definitely troubling and i do hope she paid attention when you were talking about the potential heart block!! scary stuff for sure.... i truly hope they can figure out whats happening my friend.... hugs!0

Vail, I thought I had replied to your last post but don’t see it here. I guess I never hit enter. Oh well. How scary to be going through all that and then not sure if they’ll find the cause. You want an answer but you want it to be something completely treatable and inconsequential. I’m so glad that you’re being proactive and pursuing an answer and that you’ll be getting more tests. My niece’s daughter was having some irregular heartbeat issues. They had her wear a monitor at home for awhile and it sent data to the doctor. I wonder if they have something like that at your doctor’s office?
Snoozie, how are you going? Didn’t you have some doctor appointments or tests recently? I’ve lost track with everything we’ve had going on here.
My niece’s visit went well but I’m worn out! Lol. We were going somewhere every day. I caught up on housework yesterday and we actually went for a walk after dinner. It was so humid and I was dripping sweat after two miles. I managed to go grocery shopping today so maybe we can get back to normal now.0 -
You did well to do a walk at all in the heat. I can't cope at all in it! We are having a heatwave here but today was a little cooler and not so sunny so had a lovely day out at a big agricultural show. I ate too much! I feel food is part of the experience but maybe I need to get over that! I just loved seeing all the animals and was glad it wasn't too hot for them. It's supposed to get very hot over the next couple of days and I'm dreading it! I will not be exercising! Today my exercise was just walking around, and yesterday moving furniture. I do need to get back to my programme when it cools down.suzyqholland wrote: »You want an answer but you want it to be something completely treatable and inconsequential. Yes, that's it exactly! It's worrying when you don't get an answer. So frustrating but I went for my ECG and nothing happened over the short period they did it so it was normal pulse rate and regularity. So the person said it was anxiety, and there couldn't have been anything wrong if I'd had a normal test. It's so frustrating. I saw my son the next morning, and he was taking my pulse while we were chatting and I was relaxed and happy (not anxious!) and it was slow and irregular. In fact it was when the doctor took it too. It's not constant so the ECG didn't catch it. So frustrating as it's not related to anxiety at all. It's quite random.
Yes, it's possible to get 24 hour monitoring here, but the person said as there was nothing on the ECG it must be anxiety and no point in doing any more. Whereas I feel I would like them to see an ECG at the time that it's actually happening. It's not like I'm imagining the symptoms. Why would 24 hour monitoring exist if a single ECG can rule out everything?
Anyway, my son is saying I should get back in touch with the doctor as what I was told doesn't seem right, as I don't have anxiety, and both of us (a nurse and a doctor) have checked my pulse and felt abnormalities multiple times.
Good luck with all your stuff too, Snoozie, and I hope you get answers too. What are we like. all three of us with our tests and strange symptoms and things! I suppose it must be our ages!

Vail i just saw on the news that a lot of Europe is under a horrid heat wave and that in London i think they said its getting so hot there, it's the first time they've EVER issued an extreme heat warning for everyone.. I think its Portugal thats also battling terrible wildfires and italy in a 70 yr record drought.. holy cow! Absolutely do not exercise they are even telling "regular athletes" not to in that heat let alone people like us.. i would literally be holed up at home with gallons of water and a fan or AC hopefully to ride it out..
I totally agree with both you and Suzy.. my sister has a heart arrithmia (sp? the intermittent stop/start thingie) and she also had to wear a heart monitor for a few days in order to actually "capture" it because like your issue, it doesnt happen all the time. There's no other way as far as i know when it's an intermittent thing happening like you so WHY some tech in the ECG decided it was ok to diagnose you with anxiety is beyond me! I DO hope you ask to go back to doc and even if its YOU who has to ask about wearing a heart monitor maybe that will get you one? it's a pain in the butt i know having to push, i swear being your own advocate sometimes is the most frustrating thing when it comes to our health plus its a little intimidating to keep pushing with a doc but i firmly believe at this point.. we know our bodies and we know when something isnt working right and we gotta get pushy.
i've been having a terrible time walking the past few weeks.. i look like i'm 100 yrs old shuffing along and i cant even pinpoint exactly where the pain is at this point.. one minute i think its in my hip the next its that big muscle in my butt then the whole leg goes tingly blah blah blah.. i can move the bad leg backwards but not forwards without pain, and bending over is a big no.. raising the leg to put on my underwear or socks just about puts me thru the roof.. but its mainly just the damn walking thats affected and the pain of course.. and if i sit for more than 10 min?? omg.. takes me 20 min to get up and have to walk around for another 20 just to get mobile..and big ows
at first i thought i just pulleda muslce or something but its been almost 6 weeks now so i finally called my doc.. im sure it will just be get some physio or something... but i can't go on like this i cant get any physical activity in at all and im up at least 3 or 4 times a night with leg or foot cramps. i/ know i've been standing a lot more at the airport with the RC i'm on my feet most of the shift ... but i've been doing that for almost 4 months now so i doubt if thats suddenly causing it.. anyway at least i got an appointment.. i DID ask for a longer one.. here the standard is a 10 min apt unless you say you want to discuss something more, but i would have had to wait til september for a longer one.. so i said ok i'll take the 10 .. i figure i talk very fast anyway so i might be able to get in the info about my gut stuff and the specialist results on the bloodwork with her.. if not when i leave i'll just say i want to talk to you about those 2 so how long an apt do i need and just book another visit on the way out.
Suzy im glad you had a lovely visit but understand the exhaustion lol.. hope you get a little down time now to chill and spend a little time focusing on you!0 -
Oh, that sounds awful, Snoozie! And you've put up with it for 6 weeks! Do you ever get sciatica? Some of it sounds a bit like that but some of it doesn't, and when I've had sciatica it was getting better by 6 weeks. Yes, probably best to get the 10 minute appointment if you can, then book another one. I really hope you can get that pain sorted as it sounds like it's affecting your whole day (and night!). There's the chance that if you go along early, the person before has cancelled and you get a longer one.
Yes, we're in a heatwave at the moment. We haven't yet had the worst of it and it looks like Tuesday will be the very worst. Unfortunately a work day for me. I'm going to see if people will let me visit earlier in the morning or postpone till a cooler day as I honestly don't think I'll cope and won't be very productive or helpful for them! We're just not set up for it here, with hardly any air conditioning anywhere, certainly not in my workplace or in ordinary homes. I'm just going to stay indoors as much as I can, but of course will have to go out for work.
I've left a message for the GP to explain a bit more about my symptoms and that I don't have anxiety! (Although you wouldn't think that at times, lol! What I mean is I have a normal level of anxiety and the symptoms aren't related to anxiety). It's awful, I feel like I'm being such a nuisance! I know this could well be normal for me, but the fact that they've put it down to anxiety worries me more, actually, as I feel it isn't being investigated properly! Can't remember if I mentioned but I got diagnosed and treated for depression a few years ago, when I was not depressed at all, but had some physical symptoms. I sometimes think they see a woman of a certain age and it just fits the pre-conceptions.
0 -
Vail i TOTALLY agree with you about the assumption that women of a certain age are just naturally depressed or anxious and its just *kitten*.. and it makes me crazy that they go right to that - we all know there are certain symptoms for both disorders and they ARE real - but without doing a thorough investigation by the doc to see if thats actually the prob is SO frustrating!! i've always had a great relationship with my doc but a few years ago i was having some symptons (which turned out to be the thyroid thing) and she said at first im wondering if you might be suffering from depression... (the not sleeping blah blah) i said NO im not... but she still had me do this little test with a bunch of questions while i was in the office... i whipped thru em and handed em back.. and she said ok nope, you're not depressed lol.. i said no im really not.. i would tell you if i thot perhaps that might be it.. anyway i think its horrid they went straight to anxiety for you and i KNOW you feel like you're being a nuisance.. i tend to stay away from my doc unless i can't help it because i dont wanna be a nuisance either - but we have to realize we are NOT being a nuisance when it comes to our health - we have to be our own advocates now and PUSH when we know something is wrong .. its a hard thing for us to do actually - we're not hard wired to be pushy or to put ourselves first, but especialy as we age i think its even more important we kick up a fuss and keep pushing for tests and answers when something is wrong.. we've been in these bodies for a long time and we know when somethings off... but my thinking is now... its all about me and im gonna push for what i need and keep pushing.. we really have to be our own advocates now so i am glad you called your doc back and said its NOT anxiety so i need you to start figuring out what to do about this .... i really think the heart monitor would be a good start so fingers crossed they will go to that at least - please keep us posted!!
yes i get probs with sciatica about 2x a year.. but its a different pain and a different .. impediment if you will than what im experiencing now. So today im gonna write out ALL the symptons and the different areas where i feel the pain (its kinda hard to tell sometimes if its in the back, the butt, the leg or where) and which movements are painful (like walking or trying to lift my leg forward and up - or raising leg to put on underwear or socks that sort of thing.. im hoping the more detail i can write down and have with me it might help determine if its a nerve being compressed somewhere or a pulled muscle blah blah blah... anyway we will see !!
i need some breakfast lol.. and coffee.. i'll pop back and check in later0 -
Vail i heard on the news today they were telling people in England to stay home from work due to the incredible heat - i hope you are home and staying as cool as possible - i meant to ask if you have a basement or a root cellar in your house or somewhere that might be cooler? i was just thinking of my childhood when we didn't have any air conditioning and we always headed down to the basement where it was cooler .... please keep us updated how you're doing!0
-
I wonder if men ever consider themselves to be a nuisance when pressing an issue about their health? I 100 percent think that a whole host of legitimate health complaints with us older women are just written off as menopause. I get so tired of doctors saying that I’m getting older and that’s normal for my age and things change as we age. Blah, blah, blah…is right, Snoozie.
Vail, I’m so worried about the heat wave hitting y’all right now. I hope there’s somewhere you can go or somehow you can get some relief. It’s really scary what’s going on in Europe with the heat and fires. Please stay safe and cool and let us know you’re okay.
Snoozie, ten minutes? Really? I’ve never heard of doctor appointments being made for just a ten minute visit. What on earth can you get done in such a short time? You’re very smart to be as prepared as possible. I hope you can find some relief soon.
So, July 2 was the halfway point of the year. Basically, I’ve wasted half a year on my quest for better health. I have NOT made myself a priority and I’m no where closer to the tomorrow I want for myself. I want to make sure that I don’t waste the remaining half of the year. No time like the present.
0 -
Suzy you haven't "wasted" half a year - you simply had other priorities that prevented you from putting yourself first. But sounds like perhaps things are finally settling and you will be able to start carving out the time from everyone else to focus on you.. don't forget you went thru some pretty stressful stuff this year between your parents and the move (which is up there on the top 5 stressors in life if i recall) plus with having your grand daughter and the family visits etc... a lot of that was out of your control so i hope you can now take some time to be good to yourself too!!
Yes standard apts here are 10-15 min unless you request a longer one.. but i talk a mile a minute lol.. so was able to cover everything. She's sending me for an MRI on my back as she thinks it may be a bulging disc or a messed up disc pressing on the sciatic nerve this time .. anyway we will see.. she put me thru about 10 different moves to see what i could and couldnt do including a few weird ones (to me lol) .. and gave me a script for physio in hopes it might help but i'll see ... not sure if its a disc how physio can help but maybe there's some kind of exercise that can move the discs around hahaha....
0 -
Disc issues can be really complicated in that they affect nerves and cause inflammation. Maybe the physio is for that part? I had a friend whose back was just a huge bundle of tight muscles and ligaments trying to compensate for a bulging disc. Physio helped with all that. Hopefully that will give you some bit of relief. I’m glad you’re getting an MRI, too.
I do feel like I’ve wasted six months but I’m putting it behind me and getting back to basics. I’m going to try to start logging my food again. Ugh. I hate that but it really does help me.0 -
I got my MRI appointment for next week which surprised the hell out of me it was so quick - but it's at 3:00 A.M. hahaha... but at least all my years of shift work will help and as it happens to fall on one of my days off from the RC, i'll be there lol I'm going to wait to book any physio til i get the results from my doc tho0
-
3 AM????? What???? I have never heard of scheduling appointments at that time. You certainly do things differently in Canada. I honestly don't think we spoiled Americans would deal well with that. Lol. I'm so glad that you're getting it done so soon though. I don't know how you're doing your work with the RC with the pain/issues you're having. You're a strong woman, Snoozie!
0 -
Wow, 3 am! Maybe trying to clear covid backlog by working through the night? I would check with them just be sure it isn't a typo on the appointment, but it's still good that you are getting it investigated quickly. Good luck with it. I would be the same about wanting to get the MRI results before the physio. That's a good point about the physio, Suzy, and that there could also be muscle pain from compensating for the spinal problem. I have SI joint issues and at one point it was incredibly painful, up there with labour pains, but just muscle spasms.
Yes, 10 minute appointments here too. You used to be able to book longer appointments, but not any more, it's decided for you. I honestly feel sorry for the doctor's trying to get through a list of things in 10 minutes and adequately assess and diagnose them all. It's a bit of a production line.
I agree with Snoozie, Suzy, that you have had a stressful year plus some physical issues. Maybe just keeping things vaguely under control some of the time is something to give yourself credit for - it seems to take a hugely concerted effort to make changes, but I think it's also quite a lot of effort just to maintain (weight, fitness, etc.) and yet we tend to see it as a failure rather than work well done. I've had a bit of disruption recently with the heat, helping my son move, etc. and found I've been eating at odd times and with other people and I'm seeing how these changes so easily put me off course, and I've had a couple of weeks rather than a year!
We have got through the hottest day here now, and I am fine, thank you! I slept with a wet towel last night in desperation and did manage to get quite a bit of sleep, waking up and wetting it and myself and turning the fan on every so often. I am off work today so can wear cooler clothing and don't have to go out. Also enjoying the excuse not to exercise, ha ha! I might do a tiny bit of resistance training just to keep that up as I've done nothing the past few days.1 -
That's funny vail on the wet towel... i suddenly remembered as kids when it was super hot my mom would sprinkle corn starch on our sheets i think the theory being it would absorb the sweat?? forgot all about that til i read about your wet towel!
i'm so glad u checked in - been watching the news and was worried about you!!
and yep.... i did look twice at the 3am but its not that unusual here even before covid... if you're willing to go at weird hours you could get apt earlier becauase it used it take forever to try to get an MRI apt.. but they did send in the text right after the 3am that they are a 24 hr facitility - im guessing to avoid the phone calls saying are you sure its 3am ha.. But im happy to go at that hour to get it done sooner rather than later..
i usually pop a robaxacet if i'm having a really bad day before i go in for shift.. and i keep moving as much as possible rather than sit.. i did have to come home once because i was afraid if i didn't i wouldnt be able to walk across the parking lot and to the elevator at home.. but thankfully it seems manageable with the robax.. my doc did offer me tylenol with codeine as she didnt wanna give me anti inflams with the gut thing i had.. apparently they can cause something like colitis in big doses and since we still dont know what caused the gut thing she was relutctant to give me those..
we're only have a 2 day heat wave so i'm not complaining a bit after seeing what happened in Europe - stay well Vail !0 -
The wet towel actually worked really well! I will use that again if it gets really hot again. Much better than the other things I tried. Hope you're managing to keep cool over there.
I had the same issue when my back was really bad that I can't take the usual anti-inflammatory drugs, so got codeine instead. It comes with its own gut issues (constipation), but I imagine not as bad as the other ones which are quite irritating. It will be good to have the MRI and know what you're dealing with.1 -
I’m so over all this heat and humidity!!! My husband went for a walk after dinner and I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I’m tired of dripping sweat after just ten minutes outside. Ugh. Between the humidity, heat, sweat and mosquitoes….I AM DONE!
Found out today that the doctor we picked and who was so thorough and attentive has moved to Arizona. I hope there’s another doctor we like in the practice.
How are you two holding up? Any news on the health front?0 -
Oh NO Suzy!!! Awkkkkkk I'm so sorry to hear she moved away.. damn and you really liked her, plus she appeared to be really invested in your health.. that sucks!! I do hope you can find a new one just as good! Thank goodness she had all the baseline tests done on you before she left!
I have my MRI tomorrow night.. well 3:00am Thursday morning technically lol.. i'll have to remember to set the alarm! Nothing much new here otherwise - we had a few days of that heat and humidity then had a big storm the other night and its lovely now this week...
I went to my garden this morning and i'll post a few pics.. 8 weeks ago I planted the first seeds and wondered if anything would grow lol!
0 -
Just after planting everything 8 weeks ago:
Today it's actually starting to look like a garden!
1 -
Sorry they are so big.. i tried to scale them down but apparently I am also technically challenged!
0 -
Wow, the garden looks amazing! And all from seed! I am seriously impressed, and I think you should be very proud! I bet it will be satisfying having that ultra fresh food that you've grown yourself. Have you got plans for the garden over the winter?
Good luck with the MRI. It will probably be quiet and calm at that time of night which will be quite nice, I think. I wouldn't want to go at that time in the morning myself, but I would appreciate being away from the bustle and in a more calm environment.
What a shame about your doctor, Suzy! I hope you get a good one to follow up. I don't know how you are coping with the heat and humidity - it sounds awful! I didn't really exercise at all on our hottest days here: part laziness, part thinking it was increasing my heart risk! We've had some cooler days like today and I'm now back into exercising and feeling it. I had a lovely day out last week at an agricultural show which involved quite a bit of walking around. No particular interest in agriculture, but I like to go and see the livestock and have a day out! Anyway, exercise wise, I think if it's really hot, the only thing is a little bit of indoor exercise early morning when it's slightly cooler.
I've had a text from doctor to say that she's speaking to cardiology now, so that's good. I'm not massively worried, and am guessing that at worst it will just be a case of rejigging my medication. But I do want to get it checked out.
0 -
Oh Vail im so glad your doc is following up and contacting the cardiologist... keeping fingers crossed it will indeed only need a tweak to your meds if needed!
I havent figured out the winter part yet.. i dont even wanna THINK the word winter yet ha.. the garden closes the last week of October i believe.. and i have read a few things about putting straw over it for the winter? But there are also several crops that do better in cooler weather mainly root veg i think.. so i'm gonna look into that in the next few days to see if i can plant a few more things this season... i just planted another batch of lettuce as i lost all the first ones as it was so hot here... there's something growing now in a spot i outlined with twigs to remind me what i planted.... but i can't remember what it was hahaha... so we will see! i am waiting most for the carrots they seem to be taking forever lol...0 -
It looks wonderful! Your tomatoes are really coming along! What are the bottles in the middle for? We bought some tomatoes at the farmers market and they tasted like they came from the grocery store. So disappointed. We may have to plant some next year. What else do you have planted?
By the way…you look fantastic!0 -
The bottles are 750ml water bottles - its like a little irrigation system lol - you poke a few holes in the bottom, sit them in a few inches of dirt and fill them with water and it seeps out slowly deeper near the roots ... so when i go over to water the garden i fill the bottles before i leave..
I have swiss chard, carrots, tomatos, green onions, peppers, lettuce and... something else... oh strawberries LOLOL.. i just planted a bit of spinach and i'm going to plant more carrots and some cabbage next week for a fall harvest... oh and maybe some cabbage
1 -
if you decide to plant some tomatos next year suzy.. some of my friends who have houses but dont wanna do a full garden put tomato plants in big pots in the backyard.. i swear the plants are 3x taller than mine already... so that might be an option if you just wanna try some tomatos and not a whole garden - and i agree with you re the tomatos.. im so tired of buying tomatos that taste like cardboard.. aka supermarket ones.. i'm really hoping these taste good!1
-
I have grown tomatoes indoors in a pot before. I didn't get much of a crop but it was nice having homegrown ones! I'm with you on the supermarket tomatoes. I used to get veg delivered from a local greengrocer and sometimes their tomatoes were amazing!0
-
Just laughing at my trendweight results this morning
"You are losing 0.1 lbs/week of total weight.
You are burning 44 cal/day more than you eat."
"You will reach your goal around August 11, 2026."
Oh well, at least I'm not gaining! Actually counting that as a success as I'm only a pound above my lowest weight this year.1 -
LOLOL Vail... i bet you got a giggle out of that 2026! I remember sometimes when i would submit my food diary it would say "if every day was like today you would reach your goal weight in 2,360 days or something like that lol..
Home from my MRI - i must say it was quick i was actually in and out before my appointment time as you had to be there 1/2 hr before to fill out the forms.. the second i was done i was called in and i think this one went maybe 10-15 min max.. the last one i had on my shoulder was 25 min and i was starting to get a little closterphobic by the last bit wasnt sure i was gonna make it thru.. i did have one moment of panic when the bed started to rise... i wish they had warned me about that because of course you're in this narrow tube and in my head im thinking if you raise it much more im gonna hit the ceiling and be trapped lol.. but they let me put my facecloth i brought over my eyes.. the tech at my last one taught me that trick in case you open your eyes during the procedure.. it keeps you from panicking at seeing the tube an inch above your face lol..
I'm off today so i think i'm going to see if i can get a steak on sale - sometimes the butcher has them at 30% off if the best before date is in the next 2 days .. of course, i'm only doing that to up my iron .. yup thats my story and i'm sticking to it!1 -
I’m curious how many people were there at the same time as you, Snoozie. That’s such a weird time for an appointment.
2026?! Did you think, “challenge accepted!”? I know you’ll beat that date by years! I remember when I used to complete my daily log as well. It had me losing twenty pounds in two weeks on the days that I hiked. Lol. I still haven’t started logging again. I keep meaning to do it but I just hate it so much.
Vail, I hope the news from the cardiologist consultation is positive. Fingers crossed for you!
0 -
LOL it was packed Suzy - well to capacity anyway... they only allow 5 people in the waiting room at a time so i gather the appointments were like an assembly line as when i came out, the next one was waiting on a chair outside the MRI room and the waiting room was full again..
funny enough when one of the people at Red Cross asked if i could switch to the late shift and I said no cause i had the MRI at 3am.. he told me his son had had a 3am MRI one too at a hospital downtown.. but in fairness it's not unusual here.. you can get an appointment earlier if you're willing to go at odd hours so i think for a lot of people, they are happy to set their alarm if it means they can get it done months earlier lol .. or so it appeared from the waiting room ha
I lucked into a sale as its a holiday weekend here on the steaks.. got 3 big thick striploins for $15! I did up some carmelized onions and some mashed potatos and pigged right out and froze the other 2 steaks for next month.. then i ripped open a roll of refrigerator cookies.. you know the tube o' cookies you just spoon out onto a cookie sheet and pop in the oven?? Not normally my thing but i grabbed it on sale a few weeks ago and dsicovered it in the fridge.. i was on a feeding frenzy last nite which is why i'm up at 4am - well that and the messed up sleep from the night before ha. I am hoping by tomorrow my first tomato will be ready to pluck... there will be a toasted BLT for breakfast the day its ready!1
