I'm sorry you've had such a rough time, Snoozie. You do seem to get some odd physical things going on sometimes. I'm really glad you are having more tests, as I wonder if it's possible if there is something a bit off which is underlying everything? I remember one of my MFP friends years ago finding out that she had an underlying condition, something that had never been tested for and was treatable - nothing related to what's going on with you! But it reminded me that so often we just don't know what our bodies are up to. I wouldn't know about my kidney disease if I'd never had tests! I have another condition which took years to diagnosis - I'd long given up going to the doctor about it, and it was just picked up routinely at a check-up for something else.

It does sound like you've found an equilibrium with weight and maybe another set point. Those are funny - I'm sensing that I'm hitting one just at the moment, and the strange thing is that my weight now is my original goal weight! But I think I need to push through this one and get a bit lower.

I have not planted chervil yet! It's on my massive to do list! I meant to get loads done yesterday but ended up messaging a friend - I have been decluttering and was taking some stuff to donate, and wondered if she had anything that needed taking, and we ended up spending the day together. I don't do that sort of thing often enough. Really need to be more sociable.

The garbage salad sounds great. I hate really cold food, and it's the one thing that puts me off salads. I often make them in advance and leave them out to take the chill off, but you've reminded me about mixing in some hot cooked food!

I don't know if I mentioned, Suzy, but I made some buffalo cauliflower after you overate on it. I didn't have readymade buffalo sauce so had to improvise - looked up various recipes and used stuff I had in the house. So good - I might make that again today now you've reminded me.

Don't feel so bad about not doing enough for your health - you have had a lot on these past few months. I've felt tired reading about what you're up to! Driving parents to appointments, looking after a grandchild, vacation, etc. all after a house move, and you've still been fitting in those gym classes and hikes. It's a lot.

I've had a week of making excuses for exercise. I've done some, but not enough. And I cheat and count gardening as exercise! This year, I've been pretty good at doing my set exercise on my programme most days, so I'm going to try to focus on that - even if I don't do the full thing, even I only do five minutes between other things, to do SOMETHING every day.

Got through most of the day and remembered I hadn't done my bit of exercise like I promised, so I had a look on youtube and came across the old Jane Fonda workout. I used to have the video years ago. I only did a tiny bit of it and wow, it was hard! Quite comical trying to get even anywhere near those positions now!

    suzyqholland Posts: 1,376 Member
I remember those! I also did jazzercize back in the day. I even had the tights and the leg warmers. Lol. I worked in the yard all day today, digging up plants and moving/replanting them. I’m exhausted and my back is killing me. I’m definitely counting that as exercise!
  • Vailara
    Vailara Posts: 2,474 Member
That does definitely sound like exercise. And I do think those things count - lugging the hoover around is low level exercise. Even hanging out washing. It's all better than nothing, and I've just wondered now if that's one of the reasons women live longer, because they tend to do more of that sort of stuff regularly when they retire.

I'll have another go at Jane Fonda because it was kind of fun to do. Was horrified when I found the bit I'd been struggling with was a beginner one! And I count myself flexible, but those positions! Side splits in a beginner video? I probably could do with those leg warmers now to stop my legs seizing up.
  • suzyqholland
    suzyqholland Posts: 1,376 Member
Lol!!! I can’t imagine doing side splits now! I remember those videos as being pretty challenging. Sweating to the Oldies would be more my style, I think. Whatever happened to Richard Simmons? Heck, I remember my dad exercising to Jack Lalane way back in the late 60’s.

I really really need to do more stretching. I’m starting to feel like an old lady with how stiff I am after any exertion. I saw a video online of a toddler making grunting noises when they picked up something off the floor. They were imitating granny. Lol.
  • Vailara
    Vailara Posts: 2,474 Member
Oh, that's so funny about the toddler! Picking things up makes me feel old! And if I get out of a chair that I've been sitting in too long - I can do it, but I seem to seize up so it's more gradual and usually with a vocal accompaniement. I need to stretch more too. I've been avoiding it partly because of my sore joints, but also because I always get bored at the stretch and cooldown at the end of my workouts and rush it.

Dieting disaster yesterday. I was doing fine, then stopped off to get petrol, and ended up picking up a load of crisps and chocolate on the way to the till. I ate so much! There was a healthy meal in there somewhere but mostly just junk yesterday, and of course it's on the scales today. Of course, I know there's no harm done if I just put it behind me and don't do it again today, and I feel very motivated this morning. But I know that by about 3pm, there's a rebellious part of me that will be saying to just finish it off to get out of the house or something. I wish I could lose the taste for this rubbish!

    Hiya all!

Vail im with you on the cold salad sometimes.. i've practically been living on the warm salads the past few days..i do enjoy them much more than cold ones and its also mostly out of laziness lol... and to use up the fresh veg.. i have one batch of broccoli/cauli/carrots left i'll cook them up today and pick up another salad and maybe a quarter cooked chicken and that will be enough til i leave on thurs morning.

As far as your goal for daily exercise/movement - i hear ya on that. The only time i actually stuck with that was during the challenges we did virtually during covid .. we got one point for every 15 min of exercise and it got pretty competitive hahaha.. so there were days i ONLY did it to meet the minimum for the daily challenge... if it helps when i get back I'll do a challenge with you hahahaha!

and yep gardening/vaccuuming it all counts.. i think i told you a while back i watched a documentary from the UK where they had 3 couples tracked.. one did the gym every day for an hour, others did regular housework and chores around the house, and the 3rd were told to do nothing at all but sit on the couch lol. The middle couple actually ended up burning more calories than the other 2 because the chores were often keeping them moving for longer periods... whereas the gym people went hard for the first bit then got tired and so burned less cals in the hour at the gym.. (and the couch potatos did come in last for the calories burned lol)..

I'm pretty sure if i cleaned out my storage bins i would find a jane fonda workout.. and yes i admit i did a few richard simmons "sweating to the oldies" at some point too! These days i confess i only do the videos from the SeniorShape youtube channel now LOL i do like they have all kinds from stretching to cardio and strength training.. but like anything else.. its actually doing them i find challenging!

i went on a binge the other day too Vail - i had a small bag of cheesies (like crisps) and an aero chocolate bar (i ate it one piece at a time.. but i still ate the whole bar!) and there was something else in there... oh M&M' peanuts! I can't remember if it was all in one day or if i managed to space it over 2 - but it was definitely some kind of weird craving thing and i went with it lol. It seemed to have worked i haven't wanted anything again so fingers crossed your little sojourn into the junk day took care of your cravings..

as for the scales.. here's a weird one... umm how to be delicate... well lets just say i knew i was waiting for mother nature to pay me a visit.. i was starting to get a little uncomfortable even and drinking gallons of water to try to help things along.. i figured with all the veg i'd been eating nature would simply run its course but it was not co operating..

right then... that siad.. the scale showed a 4 lb increase yesterday... it's been hovering around 2 up or 2 down so that was a big jump.. but i knew i was eating well.. anyway last night mother nature finally decided to stop by and visit.. and this morning.... i'm down OVER 4 lbs and slightly into a new weight number LOLOLOL... I absolutely know it was not just from ummm... the bathroom visit shall we say? but im sharing because for sure its the consistency in eating well that WILL continue to bring results with a loss.. it may not always appear when we want to see it lol.. but it's working in the background and will show up on the scale when you least expect it!

Vail - i thought of you while i was making my lunch today - today's "hot" salad components were leftover cooked green beans, baby carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and a bit of shredded chicken; nuked for 30 seconds then dumped on top of the cold ingreds of micro greens, spinach, cucumber, tomatos and red onion! A dash of ranch dressing and mixed all together - Was totally yummy and filling! ma belly is full lol

Snoozie, I think you’re on your trip? I hope you’re having a great time!

How’s the Jane Fonda going, Vail? I saw an episode of Grace and Frankie the other day. She has aged well. Maybe I need to find my old leg warmers and jump in. Lol.

We leave on Monday for our trip but I’ll try to remember to check in. I’m not looking forward to the heat in Texas though. Maybe being in a bathing suit will help motivate me for when I get back. Lol.

Yes, Jane Fonda looks amazing! She did have a bit of a head start with amazing genetics, I think, but looks so good for her age. I have done the whole beginner workout now and it was fun to change things up a bit. I read up on safety and as I'm cautious about exercises but apparently she did work with experts to make the exercises safe and effective. However, it has brought home how stiff I am! I'm getting nowhere near the positions she gets into in the beginner video, and I'm fairly flexible for my age. And I do think that's a bit a fault with the video. I think modern videos often have a more realistic version that you can follow. That whole video is just superfit, superflexible people doing impossible things.

The odd thing is that I'm finding the exercise on the programme I'm on is not challenging enough! Which is good, I suppose, but I think I need to change it for something a bit harder maybe once a week. I still don't feel fit enough for a gym class.

My weight is static because I'm eating too much lol. I shouldn't use a holiday weekend as an excuse but I have done. I feel I could settle comfortably at this weight but I think I need to get back on the case and try to get closer to goal. I'm still overweight by a few pounds.

Hope you are having a great winery tour, Snoozie! And hope you have a lovely trip too, Suzy! Good luck with the heat. I don't do well in heat - I'm quite enjoying the grey weather we've got here at the moment!

I’m so glad you had such a good time, Snoozie! All of you look so happy. I’m going to say it was the company and not the wine. Lol.

We just left Plano, TX and are on our way to San Antonio and 103 degree heat. Maybe I’ll sweat off a couple pounds. We had a great visit with my husband’s family.

My husband saw a clip on the Today show the other day that talked about “intuitive eating.” Apparently it’s a “diet” or way of eating where you only eat what your body is telling you to eat. Lol. I told him that I’d be as big as a barn because my body tells me that it wants chocolate and sweets. Lol. Like we’ve said before, no one craves broccoli!

lol Suzy on the sweating off the pounds.. wasn't that richard simmons claim to fame?? im so glad you had great visit with your hubbys family ... did you pick up one of those hand held fans to take with you?? i was frozen half the time down east which is so weird for me lol.. it was only around 60F most days and lower at night and a lot of wind coming off the ocean; im just so used to always being hot it was weird for sure.

ya im not sure i would do well with a diet based on my body telling me what it wants!! i did have a lovely impromptu dinner at a steak house last night. i found out one of my colleagues i worked with for a long time had retired in january (since i left work i dont keep up with everything) long story short texted her and timing wise it worked out she was able to take some time last nite while she was in the city and we had a lovely dinner together to catch up and wish her well.. i ate a lot while i was away as every meal was at a restaurant, and again last night if it was in front of me.. i ate it... i would have been more than satiated with half the food i ate but no.. it was there...

they are lifting the mask mandates here tomorrow... but all our hospitals have said they are keeping them mandatory which i think is a good idea.. so many people going into a hospital are immuno compromised im glad they are keeping it in place for the hospitals to be honest. i will prob continue to wear mine indoors for groceries and i'm back at the airport today with the RC. At all our airports right now, no one is allowed in except travellers.. you can't go in and meet people arriving, or inside to pick up people you have to wait outside and frankly.. i hope that stays in place because its so crowded in the airprots now with just the travellers... but i guess i'll find out tonight if it's open to the public again.. ugh. ha

my little garden is coming along slowly... all the ones around me are much bigger as they used seedlings vs seeds lol.. but there is green showing in mine so stay tuned in a few weeks to see if anything actually comes out of it hahaha.

Love the photo, Snoozie! Sounds like a great trip, and nice to be social with the relatives. Glad you had a good family visit too, Suzy.

Intuitive eating, yes, of course I've done that! Can you guess how much weight I lost? Ha ha! It just doesn't work for me, as I get really confused signals from my body, telling me it's hungry at the wrong times. And also, if I've cooked something and put it on my plate, as a rule I'm going to eat it whether or not I feel satieted.

It's nice that your garden is coming on, Snoozie. I've been thinking of buying seedlings if I ever get round to growing things again - it's got to be easier! But you will have the satisfaction of growing from seed.

I haven't been walking enough - I went out yesterday into town and will try to upload some photos. Hope I can make them smaller. I got some exercise but 100% when off my diet. In fact I did intuitive eating and I intuitively needed some chips from the fish and chip shop with lots of salt and vinegar, which I ate at a picnic table in a little garden in town. I got a small portion because I was really craving them and thought, well, I can eat a few and throw the rest away - guess how much I threw away. None. But they were so good!

Vail LOVE the photos!! soo pretty and omg on the deck chair.. total NSV for sure LOL!!! SO COOL!!

Beautiful photos, Vail. It just looks so serene and welcoming. I’m a total salt and vinegar chip fan! No way I’d throw any away either. Lol. That’s quite a chair! I’m super impressed that you got up in that.

Good news on the seeds showing some green. Yes, seedlings are faster but what an accomplishment to grow from seed. I can’t wait to see some veggie photos!

It is so hot here y’all. Oh my gosh! How do people live here. We’re going for a two mile hike at a lake tomorrow morning with our nephew and his son. We’re leaving at 7:00 am to try and avoid the high temperatures. I’m so ready to get to the beach and cold water.

You are very brave going for a hike in the heat! Anywhere I've been that's really hot, I avoid anything physical. I suppose you can do the two miles before the midday sun hits! I suppose you are all prepared with sunscreen, etc. I won't tell you the temperature here because I get confused, but it has been mild, but windy, so I needed my coat yesterday for my walk.

I heard there’s a heat wave hitting parts of the US and Spain with temps in the low 40 Celsius 🥲. Stay hydrated Suzy and think siesta for the hot afternoons !!

I noticed the other day my spinach leaves are getting a little yellow so is everyone else in the gardens - and I just saw this online and I had to laugh I think maybe the last suggestion is true !

I just laughed out loud in the car at that one Snoozie. My husband totally agreed. Lol.

The hike was more of a walk and luckily we went before it got too hot. Last night at 6:00 it was 41c (107f). Those people are absolutely insane to live there. We’re in Louisiana just now. We’ll stay in a hotel tonight and be at the beach tomorrow early afternoon.

I feel like all we’ve done is eat. We met family for breakfast this morning and I got a veggie scramble. I’m just craving vegetables. I had a salad for lunch, too. Vacation eating can be so unhealthy. I’m going to try and do better at the beach since we’ll have a kitchen.

I have a colonoscopy scheduled when we return home. Ugh. Something to look forward to. Lol.

Just popping in quickly before work and read your comment about the colonoscopy, Suzy! Something to look forward to - I can't stop laughing! Hope it all goes well for you. And thanks for the giving the temperature in celsius! That's hot!

So funny about the yellow leaves, Snoozie. That's my experience of gardening. My garden just laughs at my efforts. It's a jungle at the moment, I can't keep up with it. I still have the chervil in my virtual shopping cart. Maybe next year lol. I seem to spend my whole time just trying to stop the garden consuming the house.

Back on track (ish) with the diet, as all those little bits of eating too much/the wrong things were adding up. I checked my trendweight graph and it said I was GAINING weight at the rate of 0.2 lbs a week! So I'm trying to get back on the case. I will remember to check trendweight more often. My weight fluctuates so much and it helps to sort out the trend from the general noise. I've basically spent the last two weeks eating at around maintenance when I thought I was eating at a deficit - I think that has been the story for me for years!

    Snooozie Posts: 3,470 Member
Suzy - i can TOTALLY relate to the eating all the time... when i was away even tho it was only 7 days (including the 2 travel days).. at least 20 meals were in restaurants - everything from breakfast to dinner.. at one i ordered a vegetable stir fry just out of self preservation cause i was craving veggies too lol.. but there aren't many dishes in the places we went that had any vegetable in it lol.. i think i had a veggie omelette one morning too .. otherwise it was all restaurant food and i swear i thot i was gonna burst a few times.. on the way back to my sisters where it was just going to be here and i for 2 days we stopped for groceries and i grabbed a tray of raw veggies with dip and a big salad and said this will do me til i leave LOL..

I THINK this is your first colonoscopy coming up? The procedure itself is a piece of cake you're out for it so don't worry about it now just enjoy the beach time!!

i was at my garden yesterday and met my friend who looked after it while i was gone.. she is a much better gardener than me lol.. she put stakes on the tomatos and apparently threw some broken eggshells or something in there. Mine still looks tiny compared to the others who used seedlings.. but there are little green tops on the carrots poking thru.. and i think i see either spinach or lettuce coming up haha. im going back to water today so i'll try to take a pic..

i had the past 2 days off and its been lovely weather so trying to get out and about as much as possible. No pickleball for a while now everyone is busy or playing indoors and i have no desire to go indoors lol.. but thats ok .. im hoping to get out on my bike next week a lot more. I'm back at the airport with RC until the end of the month still.. no word on if they will be extending it into July as yet.

Thursday i have the ultrasound on my spleen from the hematologist - i just read the instructions and i cant eat or drink for 12 hours before.. gak!! no fried foods for 24 hrs before which is fine... but no coffee that morning?? awkkk.. im gonna be a grumpy gus - i already scoped out the area tho and there is a coffee shop right outside the hospital hahahah... tehre better not be a long line up or i might just be tempted to plow thru everyone and skip ahead ha

Vail - for sure the trending tool seems to be awesome in letting you know where youre going.. it must have been a wee shock to see a trend up so good on you for putting on the brakes and stopping that in its tracks. I had some weird craving thing the past 2 days i ate potato chips and M^M peanuts which RARELY happens these days... i felt somewhat sick after to be honest. but at least im pretty sure it's out of my system now!

Good luck with your ultrasound, Snoozy (visions of you shouting "coming through!" and charging to the front of the queue at the coffee shop after - so funny!). And with the colonoscopy, Suzy. All these investigations! Do you have routine colonoscopies over there? We don't here. Our inner workings are a mystery. Over 60 I think you can have a home test to check for hidden gut bleeding. I have cervical screening next week and get mammograms every few years. It's so annoying that cancer screening always seem to involve your most intimate places, ha ha! If only it was elbow screening or foot screening.

I can understand craving veggies! It's annoying when eating out that often dishes don't have a lot of veg. It would be a nice opportunity to try some expertly cooked veg. I would love to have more dishes with a lot of fancy veg.

Looking forward to your gardening pics! It's quite exciting! I feel I'm getting some of the fun bit of growing veg vicariously, without any of the hard work!

Yes, the trend tool is great. There is obviously a bit of a delay. But I'd been becoming a bit complacent, thinking that I was just maintaining or even slightly losing at this weight. It was a good reminder that I was on the way up, even if it was only by a tiny amount! This is what has happened before, that I've been a bit oblivious to those slight upward trends. It's only 0.1 - 0.2 pounds a week, but it's the start of regaining if I'm not careful.

  • Snooozie
    Snooozie Posts: 3,470 Member
LOL Vail... it's a good thing there was no lineup or i might have done some shoving and pushing in the queue! turned out the ultrasound was on the whole abdomen not jsut the spleen.. and i had a student who was doing it so it took a bit longer than usual - but that was fine, i was happy to let her do it as we all have to start somewhere - her supervisor came in at the end to check everything and did a bit more stuff on me .. but the student was very good and i told the supervisor that... but the second i was out of there i might have actually RUN to the coffee shop!

Here in general - colonoscopies start at age 50 and are done routinely every 10 yrs (if you have no history of probs in that area). Mammo's also start around 50 and are done every 5 yrs (again if no history) or every 2 yrs if you are signed up for the breast screening program.. if of course you have family history or probs they are done as often as required .. but in general those are the usual routine ones that are done here.

They also do the cervical screening every 5 yrs i think? i'd have to check on that one.. but it seems around 50 is when they start checking the insides more lol. There IS a "poop" test available for colon cancer, but my doc's opinion is that is only captures maybe 40% of probs because it only tests the lower colon stuff.. so she prefers the colonoscopy... grrr lol..

and yessss why is it never elbows or knees huh ??? lol

i will send the pics from my last garden.. its still looking pretty small but its been a month since the seeds went in so at least there is a bit of green showing! i have one tomato plant with flowers yay..

Been busy at the airport - i have to say while heartbreaking at times, it is very gratifying work because our travelers are so grateful for the little we can give them.. right now the max we can do is 2 weeks at a hotel with meals provided for families (most of whom are moms, kids, grandmas travelling together) or 3 nites at a hotel with meals if they have a host family or can hook up with one of the other organizations who are also helping .. it just gives them a bit of breathing space so they can start looking for housing and work and getting settled.. but they are so very grateful for the little help we can give... my deployment ends June 30th but it looks like they might be extending it til September as the war continues in Ukraine.. but i think i'll find out about that in the next few days.

i showed a loss on the scales but i have no doubt thats because i had to fast for 14 hrs and didn't get a chance to eat at work last nite lol. but im just tracking it all to keep an eyeball on the numbers. I haven't had a vegetable in a few days either so for sure its time to say hello broccoli lol

Suzy i hope you havent melted yet!!

Love the pics of your garden! I really like how organized it all looks. That must be the neat freak coming out in me. Lol.

Vail, now that you mention it I would love to find a good vegetarian restaurant and just see what they make. Maybe try some veggies I’ve never had before or some favs in a new way.

I had a colonoscopy in 2016. I didn’t have any polyps but my mom and siblings have had them so she wanted me back in five years. I’m a year overdue. With that pesky pain in my side and a couple other things that I won’t make y’all suffer hearing, I thought I needed to go back. We typically go every 10 years if no history or problems starting at age 50. Mammograms are yearly after age 40, I think. Bone scans are maybe every five years after menopause? Something like that.

Today is our last vacation day and we leave the beach tomorrow morning. It has been a wonderful vacation! I’m glad we finished the trip at the beach because it’s been SO hot! I have thoroughly enjoyed spending time with my granddaughter at the beach/pool. She’s the best!

Vail, I’m so proud of you for staying on top of your loss/gain statistics. You Rey have this under control!

Snoozie, when do you get your results?

I'm glad you've had such a lovely vacation, Suzy. I love hearing about your time with your granddaughter. It sounds like you two have such a wonderful relationship.

Your garden looks great, Snoozie - I didn't expect to see so much going on!

Interesting about the different screening. I'm wondering if I'm missing out now, lol! Even when I was having abdo issues they didn't do a colonoscopy - just one of those blood tests for inflammation. It does sound like a good time to go back when you've been having these odd pains, Suzy.

I do breast self-examination when I remember, and one bonus of losing weight is that it's easier now. Less to examine, ha ha! But also easier to feel what's going on without all that fat in the way. Another reason to try to keep it off.
