Suz.. i think aiming for losing 10lbs and NOT setting a time frame to accomplish it is an excellent idea! And all the experts agree if you can lose 5% of your body weight it makes a huge positive difference on your insides (as well as your outside lol) so congrats on deciding where you want to be..
I'm so glad you enjoyed the class!! I totally hear you on the hip after being on the floor.. i think i told u when i was doing those fitness classes i dreaded the mat work.. and that was mainly because even a short time down on the floor hurt my hips. I absolutely need to do some of the stretch videos again until i can get back to some sort of class. Keep us updated!
i had my orientation for the Red Cross via zoom last night.. my area is in a bit of a flux right now as they are trying to assign teams and revamp things with the shift scheduling program, but i got a lot of questions answered and hopefully will be able to start getting more involved in actually helping out somewhere until our response teams are set up. I admit i was getting a little frustrated waiting so it was a good session.
We are supposed to get a lovely warm day today... it's been so foggy here the past 2 days I feel like i'm on the east coast instead of the city lol.. so a few hours of pickleball then meeting 2 friends for wine therapy at a local pub - i forgot it was St Patricks Day so if it gets too crowded, we can move to one of the friends back patios at her home as she's only a 5 min drive from there lol.. but it will be lovely to see them in person!

Sounds like a wonderful plan for the day! Enjoy!!!
I went to a kickboxing class today. It was the same instructor and several of the same women from yesterday. They were all so encouraging. It was quite the challenge but that’s the point, right? I certainly never pushed myself that hard on the elliptical. They’ve all invited me to the HIIT class on Monday morning so I’ll try that, too. With the weather turning warmer we’re hoping to start hiking again, too.
Vail, I’m glad kitty cat is doing better. The things we do for our pets! We don’t have any pets right now and we’re going to keep it that way for awhile. I need to go back to the shelter and walk some dogs; that will be my “pet” experience for the time being. My husband is afraid that I’ll get attached to a dog and bring it home. Lol.
1 -
I hope you enjoy the dog walking. It would be kind of lovely if you did fall for one and bring it home, but of course they are such a big commitment, and you have other commitments and responsibilities. Maybe in a few years! I hope you have fun walking them. I wouldn't be without my cat, but it does make things difficult sometimes: I can't plan any trips away at the moment for instance.
I hope you do get to do something soon with the Red Cross, Snoozie. You have put so much work into it alreeady!
Weather is getting better here too. I did go out for a walk with my walking book club this week and it was windy but sunny. I counted that as my exercise for the day. I have an app now that tells me how much brisk walking I've done as well as how much normal walking, so I hope that spurs me to walk briskly, as my normal pace is a comfortable amble which probably doesn't do much for either fitness or calorie burning!
Talking of calories, I lost it last night: not sure why, just was feeling tired, headachy and stressed and ended up eating some things that I shouldn't (a bag of protein chips that I dug out and three chocolates from a Christmas tub that I'd hidden in the cupboard, and a slice of toast and peanut butter). The rest of the day I had my quinoa porridge, greek yoghurt, seeds, berries, a satsuma and chicken, lentil and vegetable soup, so actually now that I write it down, it wasn't a massive, massive amount over the day. But sugar, etc. Anyway, I hate to admit it but I felt so much better after my mini-binge. But of course the scales were up again this morning. I've been gaining weight through most of March, although trendweight is still showing a downward trend at the moment. Hopefully back on track today, but now actually looking forward to having some days when I eat more. I have plans to make those days worth it!2 -
Oh Vail, don’t beat yourself up over one evening. I think it’s perfectly normal. It doesn’t sound like you went that far overboard. It sounds like this program has given you some wonderful tools and confidence to know what to do to get back on track. I forgot about your walking book club. I’m so glad you’re still doing that! It sounds so fun!
Snoozie, you’ve been through so much training with the Red Cross and I know you want to get started. I hope they get it organized quickly and put you to work! Keep us posted!0 -
Interesting quote from my daily reading on my programme today " a 2013 study, carried out by the American Diabetes Association, found that three, short (15 minute) walks each day were more effective in reducing blood sugars than a single 45 minute walk." It was an article on blood sugar, and most of the things are stuff I'm sure we all know (whole fruit rather than juiced/dried, etc.) but this one was new to me.
https://diabetesjournals.org/care/article/36/10/3262/30770/Three-15-min-Bouts-of-Moderate-Postmeal-Walking0 -
Actually i knew that one Vail lol.. only because they covered it in my diabetes class 10 yrs ago.... and noted even 10 minutes especially after a meal really helps... i often think of it actually before i plop myself down on the couch after dinner - that i should go for a quick wander around the 'hood first! I'm partway thru those podcast links you posted btw!
A few protein chips and some toast and pb isn't exactly a crazed binge my dear lol.. and by the sounds of it your small venture into something different was quite satisfying so me thinks was totally worth it.
Suzy.. a HIT class.. ohhh you are so much braver than me!! Keep us posted how its going.. how lovely you found such a nice group for the classes!
Yesterday was officially the first day of spring here... we had a couple of nice days around 50F and quite enjoyed it - we have some cold weather still ahead but its so nice to know winter is officially over!
They are lifting the mask mandates here everywhere today except in hospitals, long term care and on transit.. those stay in effect until April 30th. the kids have just been on their march break vacation and parents are a little hinky about no masks in school when everyone has been away travelling. I will still be masking up in crowd settings indoors for the next little while - but I have a haircut scheduled this week and will be very weird not wearing a mask there!! ugh.. i might even have to put on makeup for that... lol one benefit to the mask i haven't worn any makeup in almost 2 yrs !! ha0 -
P.S. i made a stir fry last night... i rarely make them as i can never make them taste very good but i picked up a very small tub of beef strips with peppers already in a marinade at a local market - i added onion, broccoli, cauliflower and julienned baby carrots and it was actually pretty good, altho a bit dry by the time i added all the veg since there wasnt much of the marinade in the tub... but it was an easy and relatively tasty way to get 5 veg in one meal. I wish i was one of those people who can instinctively taste something and say "oh it needs a little of this or that".. but alas... that gene skipped me and went to my sister lol0
-
I don’t think I knew that about the three 15 minute walks. I’ll have to think about how I could fit that in.
Oooooh…. I haven’t made a stir fry in ages! Great idea! I tend to add too much teriyaki or stir fry sauce so I have to measure it out and put the bottle back in the fridge or I go crazy. Lol. I did learn a trick to use chicken (or beef) broth to make more sauce instead of extra teriyaki.
I went to the HIIT class this morning and I’m not gonna lie, it was hard. I had to modify some of the exercises but I did it. I also learned that I have ZERO, absolutely NO abdominal muscles. It was a revelation how out of shape I have become. Something to work on, for sure. Tomorrow I’m going to a gentle yoga class.0 -
Suzy - first off.. THANK YOUUUUUUU for the broth idea!! see i would never have thought of that lol.. but i only had chicken broth so i put about a cup in the pan and sauteed some fresh broccoli and cauli and a few baby carrots in it for a few minutes.. then added a bit of frozen corn and about 2 tbsp of instant rice and let that cook down which soaked up most of the broth but not quite all.. then dumped in the rest of the stir fry beef and veggies that were leftover and warmed it thru.. and ohhhhhh it was YUMMY!! and not dry at all it was actually way better than last night ha! So thank you .. i will definitely be using that one again and the chicken broth (low sodium version) added a bit more flavour too.. so ty ty ty
I cannot believe you attempted a HIT - I am SO impressed and even if you had to modify a few moves YOU DID IT!!! I BOW to you .... and i hear you on the out of shape.. im finding even playing pb im tiring out more easily i def have to build up my stamina and start serious walking to work on the legs !!
well done you... and i hope you enjoy the gentle yoga.... i tried yoga once but im so inflexible the only pose i could rock was the corpse one!
0 -
I am totally rocking the corpse pose right now. That class did me in for the rest of the day. I should not be this tired after one class. My stamina is nonexistent. We’ll get there, Snoozie! It’s just going to take a bit longer than it used to…just like everything else. Lol0
-
Well done on the HIIT class, Suzy! It is so hard, so to jump straight into it and get through it is a huge achievement. No wonder you are tired. The exercise on my programme includes HIIT, but the first session is three 10 second bursts, with 50 seconds rest in between - that's what they expect of somebody starting it, which I think puts you jumping in and doing a whole class in perspective!
My abs aren't great either! I struggle with those exercises on my programme. I don't fully do the HIIT because it tends to bring on chest pain, so I'm doing the resistance training and Pilates - the Pilates is good, but really hard! Much, much harder than the resistance training! I always go into it thinking it's going to be easy because it's a nice woman instructor with calming music and then I get a shock at how difficult and painful it is! I just hope it's doing some good.
I was reading your stir-fry post, Snoozie, and going to suggest adding chicken stock! I tend to make my own stir-fry sauces, but I've got quite bored with them. I've been eating a lot of cauliflower rice recently. I have discovered that you can buy it in long-life microwave packets, like the microwave rice, and it's a revelation! It's pretty bland but I have been jazzing it up a bit in various recipes. I used it in a cauliflower crust pizza (I think you had suggested that, Suzy!), and use it a lot in fried "rice". Expensive, but so much easier than making your own, and not as soggy as the frozen packets. 40 calories for the whole packet (two portions)!
I think I am now, finally, at the lowest I've ever been on MFP! By 0.1 of a pound! I'm still overweight, of course, but actually feeling very chuffed about that. I think I've been on MFP for around ten years now, and of course was heavier for years before, so this is uncharted territory. I don't actually know when I was last this weight. I must have hit it on the way up when I gained weight initially. This month has been a slog of trying to break through that barrier, but now I've done it (no doubt it will be up again tomorrow) it actually feels massive because last time I was this weight I was a young woman.
I've also been really surprised with how much I've lost on my waist, which is supposed to be a good visceral fat indicator. Although admittedly I'm doing quite snug measurements, lol. I just wish I could feel all the boundless energy that some people seem to get on this diet, but I'll take the weight and waist loss. Just need to persevere now, as I still would like to aim for a healthy BMI range.

Vail i saw your loss posted in the news feed and literally RAN here to say OMG HUGE CONGRATULATIONS !!!! what a FANTASTIC accomplishment !! i am SO happy for you - and how amazing it must feel to know YOU did it!! YOU.. you were the one who did the work and got the results you wanted - i too am totally CHUFFED for you lol.. its kinda funny really - i actually did a fist pump in the air when i saw your newsfeed loss - its kinda lovely tho we can be so happy for each other seeing the progress and achievements we make on our journeys! Well done Vail.. well done!
(As for the cauli rice.. the frozen one is very handy for sure.. at the moment tho, i'm literally eating whole brocooli and cauli bits, stems and all for the "roughage" factor (TMI?) I'm also eating a high fibre cereal once or twice a week.. i'm not a big cereal person at all but i'm trying to really up the fibre intake these days altho sometimes i think my belly is gonna explode hahaha.. sometimes i swear i slosh when i walk from all the water im drinking too!
Suzy.... we're all discovering as we go that 2 years of the pandemic and lockdowns and very little movement during that time has impacted our physical selves - and at least you're doing something about it with starting on the classes and identifying what might need a bit of work - that's already a step ahead of me! I'm actually a little horrified at how out of shape i am - most noticeably for me even with just starting out walking again.. i've been doing 30 min brisk walks but sometimes 10 min in i think omg. im tired already!! I keep going and usually get a 2nd wind.. but have to remember not to let myself drop down to a stroll which has been my habit over the pandemic just strolling around. When I think i used to easily walk for an hour down at the lake every morning and now can barely do half of that? its a little disheartening but as you said.. we'll get back to (and even better than) where we were.. its just gonna take commitment and consistency - it's a bloody good thing women excel at hard, eh ?? lol

Oh my gosh, Vail!!!! Yay!!!!!! That’s fantastic news! What an accomplishment! I know it’s been hard work and look how it’s paying off. Losing inches in your waist is so exciting, too! We all want the scale to show a loss but losing that visceral fat is such a great sign of your health improving. We’re so happy for you!
I haven’t seen the cauliflower rice you’re talking about but I’ll start looking. I hate making my own and don’t like the frozen at all. My husband doesn’t like cauliflower but I wonder if he would really notice if I mixed it in with some brown rice in a stir fry. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him. Lol.
I woke with an awful headache so no yoga today. Instead I’m going to go through the stretching routine we did last week. The HIIT class was four minutes of cardio with a hand weight then one minute of rest. The class was 45 minutes. We finished with an work on the mat. I used a five pound weight and sometimes did the exercise without it. It was mostly lunges and squats so my legs are so sore today. She says she changes it up each time. Same class tomorrow followed by a stretching class.1 -
Thank you both so much for your encouragement! I really appreciate it, and it feels really good that you are happy for me and know all about the realities of a menopausal weight problem! There is a forum with my programme, but it has really helped me to check in here with you, as I feel we are friends.
Your class sounds gruelling, Suzy. I'm even more impressed now! I don't think I could find one lot of four minutes of high intensity in me, never mind repeat it! I'd have to go for a lie down! On my programme, we are now at 40 seconds high intensity, and that's what's called the "Intermediate Plus" version, lol. I think they must have tuned in to the fact that there are older people doing the diet!
The cauliflower rice I get is from a company called Full Green. https://uk.fullgreen.com/ I find it much better than the frozen cauliflower rice, which tends to come out a bit soggier for me, and also I have very little freezer storage, so these are easier to store. I'm justifying the expense (compared to buying whole raw cauliflower) because I feel it's increasing my vegetable intake and helping me stick to the plan. I used the cauliflower and broccoli one for a biryani last night and it was really good, and very filling. I think you could probably get away with it mixed with brown rice, Suzy!
Amazingly, I haven't had a gain this morning. I thought I would bounce straight back up! So I'm still on a bit of a high today. I feel people should be noticing I've lost weight, but nobody has, lol. I suppose I'm at that age when you don't like to ask when somebody has lost weight in case it's not intentional, so even if they did notice they might not say! So it's great to be able to share my news with you. I just need to keep up the momentum and not let it creep back up again like it has in the past. When I think back to the weight I was last year when I started, I really don't want to be lugging all that around again!0 -
Vail - that's too funny you mention about feeling people should notice .. when i first came here and started to lose weight... i think it was probably 6-8 months before i had lost a significant amount of weight (to me).. maybe 25-30 lbs.. but i did NOT want anyone to comment at all back then!! I wore a uniform to work (and thankfully in a way.. worked mostly with men who never notice anything lol).. but I never got smaller unis i just tightened the belt on the pants even when it became apparent they were at least 2 or 3 sizes too big .. nobody noticed... i was starting to look pretty sloppy so i finally got smaller pants .. and boom.. suddenly everyone started commenting and i hated it !! It made me feel so self conscious and put pressure on me .. we ordered in food every day and i started to think i had to eat in secret cause everyone was noticing the weight loss and i thot they're gonna be thinking.. why is she eating all that if she's dieting? and sometimes one or two would even comment on what i was eating (as in.. are you "allowed" that?? i NEVER talked about my dieting and whenever someone made a comment, good or bad, i deflected it right away and changed the subject so fast.. it really made me uncomfortable!!
But then... as I lost more weight LOL.. nobody said ANYTHING!! and i was like hey... hello?? anyone notice my significant loss?? LOLOLOLOL.. SO I TOTALLY get what you're saying about wondering why no one has commented!! I do think in this day and age, people are def afraid of making ANY personal comments - everyone takes offense so easily these days that indeed it may very well be they just don't wanna say anything out of fear of how it will be taken! its a double edged sword i guess.. sometimes we wanna hear hey you look fabulous - other times we don't want anyone to take notice of us. i suspect everyone is thinking tho.. wow Vail looks great !!
I am so truly happy for you - and your insides are going to be just as happy with the loss as your outside.. all our joints and internal organs are happier when we start to ditch some of the weight.. even 5% of our body weight according to the experts can make a big difference - i think sometimes we forget just a little at the beginning can make a big positive difference because sometimes it seems too overwhelming looking at a big picture of what we want to lose..
How are you finding the transition off the very low calorie intake part of the program? Are you finding it a bit difficult to "up" the intake at all? Just wondering as we all get used to certain things.. for me, i still can't eat a lot at one meal.. smaller portions sit much better in my tummy so i eat less, but more often. Last nite tho i made a frozen pizza and scarfed it down quick cause i was hungry - it wasnt great to be honest but i didnt care.. and i ate a LOT of it... but omg.. all night after i just felt awful... even this morning its still sitting in my gut and repeating here and there... ugh ugh ugh... so pure logic would dictate to me.. don't do that !!! Don't stuff yourself so full you feel sick... but every now and again... i need to relearn that lesson lol. But i honestly think after my gut issue and just eating so little my tummy has gotten used to smaller amounts and i actually feel hunger occasionally now - had been a long time since i actually felt hunger before this lol
I have a mammogram this morning and then meeting a friend for coffee at an italian bakery!!!!! I will try to avoid any pastries which shouldnt be too hard lol.. but i am definitely gonna indulge in a cappucino or two as my treat for the week!!0 -
Good luck with your mammogram, and have a lovely time with your friend!
I'm finding it a bit difficult adapting with the transition, and it's strange, I've sometimes struggled to finish my meals on my low calorie days, and had to take a break and come back later, but I ended up hungrier than ever yesterday on my high calorie day. Then today I was passing what used to be a favourite cafe/bistro, and just on impulse went in and asked if they had a table outdoors, and I ordered brunch (poached eggs and bacon on toast) in a little courtyard, thinking I can eat half the portion, doesn't matter if I waste it and it's overpriced, but before I knew it I'd polished off the lot and was having to stop myself from licking the plate! Then I bought a slice of a rhubarb frangipane tart and a sourdough loaf on the way out!! And have eaten half of the tart. So I've had to change today to a high calorie day and will have to rein it in for the rest of the day, and change back to lowcal for the weekend.
So it's strange and suprising. In my early 20s I went a bit far with dieting at one point and was having about 800 calories a day (I wasn't remotely overweight), and I remember that time it was very difficult to get back to eating normally again. I remember going out for a meal with friends and just not being able to eat it. So I did expect something like that this time after three months of similar calories, but it doesn't seem to be happening! It's going to make things harder, but in a way it's a relief to find out I still can eat "normally".
Having said that, yesterday was my first higher calorie day, and I have had some strange tummy pain today, so maybe it affected me more than I thought.
It sounds like your body hasn't fully recovered from the gut issues: I suppose it takes a while to heal and repopulate the flora. But maybe also a good sign that you felt hungry and were able to eat a good amount?
I had an interesting discussion with another woman on the programme and one of the coaches about older women and how to find your healthy weight. The upshot was really that it's difficult to tell. Waist measurement and BMI seem to be different indicators for men and women, and for different health conditions, but one thing the coach said was about trying to find a point where you can maintain without calorie counting, and that that point will probably be heavier than you want it to be. It was an interesting thought, especially thinking that as we are doing it for our health, we are really cutting down the amount of healthy food we can eat if we are aiming for a lower BMI. Anyway, my body seems to be wanting to stick where it is right now, as my weight loss has slowed down massively!1 -
I've just had a great NSV this morning! Have gained weight, as expected, but while I was doing my crunches I thought my tummy looked a bit odd and realised that it's because it was concave! I just haven't seen that for so many years! There were hip bones! I do realise this is partly because my fat is kind of looser, so it sort of sinks down and spreads itself out when I lie on my back. And also that it goes back to being convex when I stand up: this is only in this specific situation of lying flat on my back and doing crunches. But still!1
-
Vail !! That's AWESOME!! AND in truth, far more important win than an actual # of pounds lost!! So cool and so happy for you!!
And keep in mind., you gained a wee bit RIGHT BEFORE you dropped and hit your lowest # ever !!! so please don't worry about a little gain here and there.. of course we know to keep an eye on things - I'm up almost 2lbs this morning but i had a couple of actual hungry days lol.. where i seemed to be eating every couple of hours! Most of it was healthy but there were a few M&M's in there i won't lie lol. and yesterday I had some rice and chicken chow mein for dinner and some won ton soup for lunch.. But I know those are rare days now.. they are actually becoming the exception rather than the rule for a day of "off eating" in some way lol.. never thought i would see the day where i eat well most of the time, and only occasionally go off plan. Admittedly most of that came from the gut issue not from deliberately planning it... But I think we need the occasional dip into something different, even if its just as you mentioned in an earlier post, to get that totally "satiated" feel now and then.. and be able to enjoy it without fear its gonna set us off into old habits.
I was browsing yet again for some plant based/non meat recipes... as you know i've been a little frustrated cause everything i've found so far has lots of pasta in it, or its a "side" dish, or it's something totally weird i wouldn't eat anyway lol.. but i did find the "forks over knives" website this morning.. i only had time for a quick glance thru the recipes on the site but it does look like there are some yummy looking "normal" type recipes i would try lol. I'll keep you posted once i take a better look.

Vail - i did have to laugh a little at your bistro adventure.. that is so totally what i would do.. and have done!! there's a little diner just down the street from me and they had an outdoor patio during covid.. and one day i was walking by and just thot .. do it.. i distinctly remember there were only 2 other people at the end end and i ordered a full breakfast and ate the whole damn thing.. and enjoyed every bite LOL. no way i could have resisted the rhubarb tart (im eating a strawberry rhubarb yogurt as i type this!) or the fresh sourdough either..
that is interesting about the BMI ... i have an acquaintance who lost a lot of weight.. but she still has a very big 'belly".. or muffin top.. whatever the phrase is.. and there is some discussion that belly fat is an indicator as well.
I honestly think for me it's going to be when i get to where i feel comfortable with my weight, rather than a set number anymore. I still have a certain # in my head as such - where i'm aiming for.. but if i find before i get there that a slightly higher weight feels ok? i'll be fine with that..
Suzy... how are you doing with the classes?? Have you been back to the stretch one or yoga or dare i ask.. the HIT one? I keep saying i'm going to check out the seniors centre for the next series of classes... but i have yet to step foot in the door. I think I'm still slightly skittish about being indoors with other people - we've only just lifted our mandates here this week and most are still wearing masks everywhere to be honest.. i think it's because the school march breaks just finished and people are keeping to the practice for the next 2 weeks in case things spike up again...
I went to a pickleball clinic held by our pb association yesterday... it was billed as for beginner and mid level and figured i could use the refresher but in truth.. it should have been called intro to pb lol. it was pretty boring and well below my own level of play, but it was free and i did run into a few people i used to play with indoors over the winter before covid.. so that was nice.1 -
Vail, take the win!!! There’s no need to make excuses on why your concaveness is not a victory. It’s totally a victory!! You’re doing great!
When I was in my 20’s I went to a so-called weight loss clinic. They put me on a “supervised” 500 calorie a day plan. Of course I lost weight, who wouldn’t? The very first real meal I ate made me pretty ill. Needless to say, I gained it all back plus a bunch.
I was looking at what weight I’d have to be in order to be at a healthy BMI. It’s a much lower weight than I think I’d be able to maintain. I also read an article about how the BMI calculation doesn’t take age into consideration and maybe it should. I agree with you Snoozie about finding the weight that you’re happy and comfortable with. I don’t know what that weight is for me yet. I just hope to get there someday.
I’ve been to two HIIT classes, a kickboxing class, two stretching classes and today was boot camp class. It was really really difficult. I ended up just doing some squats and walking around the last five minutes. My plan is to go Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I’ll try to start walking on my off days. I wonder how long I have to do this before I actually start enjoying it? Lol.0 -
omg Suzy... i TOTALLY take my hat off to you ... holy hell.. i honestly believe that many hard classes would kill me lol. I might be able to handle the corpse pose in yoga class.. but even the up and down dog poses are beyond me !! I'm so impressed.. truly!! We're going thru another cold spell here and i'm using that as my excuse to walk which is pathetic as i walked at -10C in the winter on occasion. So you have inspired me for sure! \
And yup.. honestly... I really think i will know when i reach where i wanna be.. comfort wise not a specific number on the scale... I know i'm not there yet.. so i'm continuing to watch my portion size and push a lot of veg/less meat and lots of water and aiming for the next five pounds to be gone (i do better working on small amounts at a time rather than the big pic).
Have you thot again about maybe getting your walkies in with the dogs at the shelter? I would love to have a doggie to walk - not one like my sister's shitzu who waddles slowly .. but it would certainly make the walk more enjoyable if i had a frisky 4 legged friend with me!0 -
I am still planning on walking the shelter pups. I just have to get my “shitzu” together. Lol.0

HIIT class was hard this morning. I think Mondays are just harder to get motivated about exercise. My weight has been up and down like a yo-yo since I started exercising. I’ve been hungrier, that’s for sure.
I splurged and bought some new (*gulp* expensive) hiking shoes this weekend. I did a bunch of research online and this type is supposed to be really good for the type of foot pain I have. I’m really hoping they will make a difference.
I would love to incorporate some veg only meals but I can’t think of anything that my husband would like. If you come across something you really like, let us know. Oh, Vail…I found the riced cauliflower like you mentioned. I’m going to try it with a stir fry this week.0 -
I bet the class was hard. I'm just so impressed that you are doing it! This will make you laugh, but I was doing my workout video this morning, and I was actually thinking about you when I was doing it and whenever it got hard I was telling myself "at least I'm not having to do Suzy's HIIT class"! You were actually motivating me from a distance this morning, lol! I even had a look at the gym classes that were on, but didn't actually book one or go to one (I haven't been back to the gym yet). You are doing loads and loads! Maybe too much? If anything, I remember when I did heavy lifting, hearing that recovery time is much longer as you get older. So it's not necessarily good to push things every day, it's actually beneficial to allow time for muscle growth and repair. Although that was for heavy lifting and I don't know if it's the same for other types of exercise.
Imagine putting a 20 something woman on a 500 calorie diet! But everything was about low calorie then, and there wasn't much thought to nutrition. Honestly, almost every girl I knew was on a diet, some of them were teenagers, and some on 300 calories a day, and none of them were even overweight! There were definitely some eating disorders in the mix too.
I really hope your hiking boots work for your foot pain. That would be so good if they do! Definitely worth the money, if not double the money!
Let us know how you get on with the riced cauliflower. Pinch of Nom is is a website in the UK with diet recipes. I've had one of the books for years, but never been a big fan: they make recipes that are usually Slimming World friendly (Slimming World is a diet programme like Weight Watchers, huge in the UK, mainly low fat: I must have done it about four or five times and it never suits me). But just tried one tonight to cook for my son and daughter-in-law, called enchilada lasagne and they said it was really good! I just wasn't in the mood for fancy recipes and the Pinch of Nom ones are usually pretty simple "family" recipes. I just used full fat meat and cheese. Anyway, there might be something there vegetable wise that your husband would like, although I'm guessing it's a bit UK-centric.
We have had gorgeous weather here, but it's now changing and I think we're getting snow again. We have a bird of prey centre not far away (about 20 minutes drive), and I don't know why I never go to these things, but I went on impulse and it was amazing! I'll see if I can upload a couple of pictures. The birds seemed to be very well looked after and were having a great time flying about.1 -
Vail - that's so weird you mentioned the birds of prey - I've actually always been fascinated with them; seen a lot of shows and read a few books - I still remember one reference talking about Harris hawks - how they are built for "dancing" thru the trees .. and if i recall the peregrine is the fastest on the planet, beating out even a cheetah when its in it's stoop... i would love to see some of the photos if you can upload them!
Suzy fingers crossed on the boots - and kudos to you on the HIT class .. i still raise my glass to you its well beyond what i can do
i played pickleball this morning and one of the guys who plays (Henry).. is a little overweight.. not a lot maybe 10-15 lbs.. but he's a very strong player.. he doesnt run around a lot but he doesnt have to as he can pretty much hit any shot.. anyway at the end our our game i said that's me done for today.. i think i had played 5 or 6 games with others (we all just switch up after every game).. and even tho there was still about 20 min left in the session i couldnt play any more.. i was wiped lol.. so when i said i'm done henry said me too.. i'm off to aquafit. i nearly tripped over my sneakers.. i said you're going to aquafit now? he said yes... i alternate curling and aquafit... so i threw caution to the wind and i said henry can i ask how old you are? he laughed and said sure.. i'm 70. I swear i wanted to lay down and cry... he's 10 years older than me and he's going to do MORE physical activity after 2 hrs of pickleball.. and i can barely drag myself to the car.. i am definitely going to have to step up my game and get moving more in different ways for sure. Bless his little heart but i was quite depressed when i heard he was 70 lol..
I'll def let you know if i find any "normal, delicious" vegeterian meals Suzy.... lol (before this my idea of a vegetarian meal was mac and cheese!) altho i really like the idea of vails enchilada lasagna... i do like a veggie lasagna actually.. as long as there is enough cheese lol... and i love enchiladas! Maybe you could start small with hubby suzy.. and do like a vegetable quesadilla cut in 4 served with salsa and sour cream as an appy one night?? perfect size for 2... just a little munchie and you can put anything in it you want... i actually LOVE them with about 1/4 cup of red kidney beans, mashed with a fork and mixed with some salsa.. then spread on a soft tortilla... then i add some green onion and some peppers if i have them, or some leftover corn, and top it with grated cheese, squish another tortilla on top and just toss it in a non stick fry pan for about 3 min on each side.. or u can toss it on the bbq too if u have it on for dinner later .. but its so quick and 2 pieces each served with salsa and sour cream?? one of my favs!! (I actually eat a whole one myself for dinner lol... and sometimes i'll shred a bit of cooked chicken in (altho not for the vegetarian version ha) .. anyway i used to make a chicken one and the mashed kidney bean one when we had friends over for a bbq.. i would make up 4 of each, cut them in quarters and platter them with the salsa and sour cream.. and would you believe the kids loved the mashed kidney beans ones (probably because they didn't know what was in it.. all they saw was the corn and cheese hahaha.. )
but since hubby is a meat and potatos guy.. that may be a way to sneak in a quick and easy veg snack

Yep, I’ve been aware of being overweight since I was a preteen. My older sister was (is) a twig and I couldn’t wear her hand me down clothes. I was pretty much told I was too fat since I was about 12. It’s crazy, I see photos of myself at 13, 16, etc and I look good and healthy! I’ve been in so many programs and on so many different diets. It’s sad when I think of it that way.
Veggie quesadilla is a great idea! I’ll try that. He loves lasagna. I wonder if he would go for a veggie version.
Henry sounds like my brother in law. He’s 74 and still hikes, does trail maintenance, bikes. I really do think the key is to just not stop moving. So much easier said than done. I’m glad I could motivate you from afar Vail. Lol. The instructor today said she was proud of me for coming this morning. I told her that I was proud of myself! She told me to just never quit! No quitters allowed. Lol.
It sounds like we were all active today! I give you kudos for doing a workout video. Vail. I just can’t make myself do those. Snoozie, five or six games? Wow! Good for you!
We went for a short walk after dinner tonight and I wore my new hiking shoes. It was only a mile and on a paved trail but my foot didn’t hurt afterward. I’m hoping it’s a good sign!

Having a try out at posting these pictures. There should be a raven, golden eagle, peregrine falcon, eagle owl here but there were loads of different kinds. Such fun to watch them. I particularly liked the raven. So intelligent.

Great news about the hiking shoes, Suzy, and very wise to take them on a short walk first!
Love the quesadilla idea (you can buy refried beans in tins here which would be great for that!), and also thinking, does your husband like macaroni cheese? Most people seem to! I know it's not the healthiest, but I add a load of veg when I make it. I like green veg like cabbage, broccoli and peas, but cauliflower is maybe more acceptable: in fact any just about any veg in a cheese sauce, with maybe a crispy top, is nice.
Bean burgers/patties are sometimes acceptable too.
Some vege meat substitutes are OK, and sometimes you can get away with chopped mushrooms because they have that meaty taste and texture e.g mushroom stroganoff, mushrooms in a cottage pie, etc.
I don't understand those really fit older people! They seem to want to be active, even be compelled to be active. And they are always slim, aren't they? I wonder how much it's habit, how much genetics, how much mindset, how much background, etc. I would love to be like that. I would love to really enjoy exercise!
My weight has edged up again, and frustratingly my scales were playing up so I have bought new (cheaper) ones, but they are weighing me about three pounds heavier. I'm finding the commitment more difficult now I've got higher calorie days. I get tempted and just think "oh, I'll make this a high calorie day and do the low calorie/fasting day tomorrow*. And have been eating some junk like protein bars which I am well aware are processed junk food even when they have protein written on the packet. So I need to get my act together as I don't want to backslide after all this hard work. It's difficult because I had plateaued for so long even on the low calorie days.
On the plus side, I'm fitting into clothes that I couldn't before.2
