Thank you for the warm welcome @jugar and I also appreciate your message of support for my Shape Shifters ‘Motivator’ role @Pupowl!
This is my small way of giving back to the Shape Shifters group for helping me cross the ‘finish’ line to achieve my initial weight and fitness goals. I’m especially grateful to @jessicakrall8, who does so much to keep the Shape Shifters group organized and motivated while also contributing so much to the overall success of the F2F group (e.g., designing the weekly challenges, creating a welcome and inviting space for all, etc.).
Of course, I recognize there is no real finish line when our goal is long term maintenance, which I’m still trying to figure out through trial-and-error (many errors! 🙃), so I’ll be seeking the help of each and every Shape Shifter as we all try to improve a little bit more — each and every day!
It’s great to be in this together with you all!4 -
@PatriceFitnessPal So glad you're in our leadership circle...you inspire all of us with your positivity and giving spirit! You've certainly helped a LOT in our weekly group challenges...here's to greater days to come!!

Good morning Shape Shifters. I had a really bad night and had 5 nightmares in the early morning. If I don't manage to wake up completely and move around, I tend to fall back in the same dream which happened a few times. A little annoying. This is a bit extreme even for me; though I dream a whoooole lot, nightmares don't generally happen so often in one night. Thankfully I managed to shake them off and I didn't feel too bad during the day. I started my new schedule at the gym. It kept some of the same exercises, but I also got a few new ones so it feels pretty fresh again. I like this schedule and I am looking forward to improve. I didn't do much else the rest of the day.
Happy Sunday everyone4 -

I had a lovely day yesterday visiting my family. It was sunny all day so my niece's hubby did a barbecue & I had lots of cuddles from my great niece & nephew.🥰
@Pupowl I'm glad you enjoyed your new gym routine.I occasionally do that too when I dream the same dream again. Not so nice when it's a nightmare !
@PatriceFitnessPal thank you so much for stepping up as Moderator for our group.Your positive encouragement is always appreciated.I'm sure @jessicakrall8 will be grateful for your help & contribution.
@PatriceFitnessPal I love chickpeas & think they go really well with a curry sauce.Next time I won't combine them with baked beans. It was very windy in Manchester that day lol 🤣🤣

@Pupowl - It’s a good feeling to have renewed energy for a workout routine! Habits are much easier to build if we enjoy the reward. Did you replace the dreaded elliptical with a different cardio machine?
I haven’t used the elliptical machine lately but I prefer it to the treadmill and I like that I’m able to burn calories more quickly on the elliptical than the stationary bike. So, it cuts down on the cardio time needed to burn my target number of calories. Usually, I’ll set a target of 200-300 calories burned so I can have a snack.
@izzyred9400 - Your comment about the windy Manchester weather made made me laugh 😂🤣😂! I’m from Boston and love baked beans. I’ll remember not to eat them on the same day as chickpeas though — 😷! I didn’t grow up eating many beans - except baked beans - but I’ve been trying to incorporate more so I can increase my protein intake.
@LaurieWrobo - I’m sorry to hear about your night sweats and migraine. I know stress can trigger both so I hope you can get some relief soon. It’s tough to find time for yourself while serving as a care giver. Sending healing wishes —
I suffered from migraines for years but eventually found some relief from medicine that helped. As long as I took the medicine when I felt symptoms coming on, I could prevent them in most cases or at least reduce the severity. These days, it’s rare that I experience a migraine. I guess that was one positive result of menopause!
Congratulations to all the Shape Shifters on the leader board!! 🎉🎉🎉. Is there anything special you would attribute to your success? If so, please share your thoughts so other members can learn and benefit from what worked for you! Thanks in advance for spreading the positive energy and results!!2 -
@izzyred9400 and @PatriceFitnessPal I never met a bean I didn't like...but my grandmother and mom when they cooked them would put in a few drops of "beano" when they were cooking and it really reduces the problem...helpful hint there...LOL I'm still laughing!

@PatriceFitnessPal
Yep, no more elliptical for me. I got the treadmill instead. I was never really a fan of it because I got dizzy a lot. But my old gym had it set up right in front of a massive TV, which was kind of the problem. My current gym has it in front of the window so you look out over farm land. I feel fine now as long as I look mostly ahead and I still hold the bar with one hand just in case. I am not too bothered by the amount of calories burned, since it is a 12 minute warm up and my main workout is the weights after. The treadmill does go up a down, imitating hills. The Netherlands is super flat so that resistance isn't something I normally get with walking outside so my heartrate goes up quite a bit. I think calorie burn is about the same as with the elliptical.2 -

Good morning Shape Shifters. I hope you have all had a nice Sunday. I did laundry, very exciting. It was really warm here again. I decided to put up my sunscreens on my own already. It's basically a big *word for butt* triangle made of UV resistant material. I only attatched two points on each and let them hang down in front of my windows. My dad is coming over Wednesday and I also have some screens to put on the upstairs windows. We can fix these up properly when upstairs is done. If I manage to get on a ladder without freaking out anyway. I give it a 50/50. I am looking forward to when it is all fixed because I really don't handle heat at all. Because of global warming, summers keep getting hotter. In the Netherlands, no houses are build with airconditioning because it wasn't needed. I wonder when that will change.
Anyway, I was feeling like going for a short walk in the evening, thinking it would be fine. I quickly realized it was still way too hot out in the open. So instead of making a loop, I just walked one path that was mostly shaded and walked back the same way at the end. It was better than nothing! Happy Monday everyone3 -
@Pupowl - I would enjoy the outside view during my workout, too. That sounds much better! The incline definitely makes it tougher. Usually, I prefer to stick with the ‘Netherlands’ setting but I’ll occasionally challenge myself with some interval hills.
I grew up in Boston and most houses didn’t have air conditioning there either. I visit my family there often and I’ve experienced the same change you described with the warmer temperatures. It’s such a ‘Catch-22’ situation that we rely on more energy for air conditioning because it’s getting hotter and on it goes — I hope the sunscreens help! I’m betting you’ll get it done with better odds than 50/50. I think the relief will be worth a little time on the ladder, and it’s good to know you can get it done later in the week with the help of your Dad, if that works better. Maybe it would build confidence if he holds the ladder while you climb. You know yourself best so you’ll find the right option. In any case, I hope you enjoy the cooler house!1 -

@JenHul and @CasandraW - My youngest son graduated from high school in 2020 and I’m still getting used to the transition to ‘empty nester.’ There was no ceremony for his class because he graduated in the pre-vaccination phase of the pandemic, but we had a motorcade that passed the elementary school he attended and all the staff stood along the route, waving and cheering along with other (socially distanced) community members who happened to be walking on the Main Street. So, that was fun for them. Usually, the tradition is for all the kindergarten and elementary school students to line the halls and ‘fist bump’ the former students (now the ‘big kids’) who are wearing their graduation caps and gowns. My son didn’t mind missing the formal ceremony but he really liked the idea of being idolized by the younger children the way he remembered looking up to them. 🤩
Our older son is a senior in college and only has a few more classes to finish up before he graduates. It’s hard to believe they’ll be finished soon but it’s fascinating to watch them grow and change.
I’m sure other Shape Shifter are experiencing important life transitions or personal milestones, too. Do you have any advice? What works for you when navigating various changes?
I guess we’re all transforming ourselves as we improve our fitness, nutrition, and overall health. How is your transition going? Has there been anything that surprised you about the experience? Please share your thoughts and reflections as a way to process your own transition journey or help other members!1 -

@PatriceFitnessPal - As I think about transitions/life milestones, it makes me think that it all moves so relatively fast and (for parents) there's a releasing, or letting go of, your children to give space for their own journeys - it's important to keep a tether of traditions and also picking up new interests/goals that will keep them engaged in what your doing even if they don't partake. My daughter is still young but as i think about adulthood and how busy life gets.. I hope that I'll continue to grow, learn and strive in my own journey so that (hopefully) when we come together as a family, we enjoy each other's company and continue to learn from each other.

Article Title: ‘Keeping A Food Diary Doubles Diet Weight Loss, Study Suggests’
I received an email message today that included a link to (somewhat dated but relevant) research, highlighting the benefit of food tracking. So, I thought I’d share it in case anyone needs motivation to use the MFP diary for tracking calories.
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/07/080708080738.htm
Don’t worry if your diary is not exact. Don’t worry if you exceed your daily calorie target. Don’t worry if you don’t remember to log every single food item. There’s plenty of time for improvement and refinement later. For now, we’re just trying to build better habits!
I don’t really think of this process as ‘dieting’ because that doesn’t seem sustainable over time; and, I’ve developed a decent habit of tracking BUT I usually ‘guesstimate’ the portion and number of calories. So, these days I’m trying to weigh and measure more accurately. I put my food scale on the counter instead of keeping it in the cupboard to help me remember. I’m VERY SLOWLY getting better at it.
What helps you remember to track your food in the diary? If you use another type of diary or strategy, how is it working for you?3 -

Good morning Shape Shifters. I decided to head out for an early walk. I took my bike to the starting point of one of the few trails you are allowed to walk at night (I am too chicken for that) and I started at 7:00. Early walks are the best because you run into very few people, the light is generally the best for pictures and you are more likely to see animals. It was already pretty hot and there was one section where I did not have a good time and was just thinking negative stuff. I managed to snap myself out of that fairly fast thankfully. I still feel really blessed whenever I am in the national park; the idea I have this beautiful place so close to home and I can go whenever I want. Before I moved here, going for walks in nature was a rare treat. I would have to plan with my dad so we could go with his car, but he isn't a walker, or into pictures, or into going early. Having that freedom now is really nice.
I got some good pictures of a bird I have only seen once before (a meadow pipit). I guess they are pretty shy, but this one was posing nicely for me on some fence posts. When I was walking on the path to the bird lookout, I saw a frog sitting on the path. She looked a little dry and skinny, so I carried her over to the water edge. When I came back from the lookout, she was sitting in the water so I guess that was the right thing to do (I don't really know anything about frogs). I don't have a lot of patience to hang around at the bird lookout, but it's a nice path to take and the view is always worth checking out. Barn swallows often make nests inside the building and one of them was just chilling on a ledge. I found a really lovely place to sit near water; probably my favorite bench of the national park so far. Near the end I saw a roebuck through the trees, but he didn't want to be in the picture and ran off. Later I thought I saw a fox as well, but it ended up being a massive hare! Those things can get really big. There was one bit of the route with a huge amount of mosquitos. I did have my bugspray with me this time, so standing still wasn't a problem. Overall I really enjoyed my walk.
The rest of the day was fairly lazy. I was very tired, bored and my head hurt a lot. I mostly walked Tinus or sat on the couch watching the birds in the garden. I went for a quick trip to the grocery store and bought a lot of strawberries on sale.
Pictures will be under the spoiler as usual. Happy Tuesday everyone6 -
I totally agree with the study that tracking helps with weight loss. For me overeating and tracking go hand in hand. If I don't track, I will overeat. If I overeat, I won't track. It is a bit too much like a head in the sand thing. Like it didn't happen if I don't keep track of it, which is rubbish of course. When I first started losing weight, I really enjoyed keeping a food journal. It was a bit like a puzzle I had to figure out and having 'proof' of how well I did that day felt nice. Though I can understand tracking can be really annoying too. I am very happy that my main calories come from shakes and mealbars, so I have nothing to measure. I just have to do this for snacks, like fruits and nuts. I don't mind doing it for a couple of things, but if you cook your meals from scratch, it must be really frustrating sometimes.
I haven't been tracking for too long. I spent Sunday making a new food plan and wrote everything down on paper. I now plan to journal daily and also keep track of my hunger levels, water intake, sleep, energy and all kinds of stuff. I feel like I need to be very firmly and consciously in the drivers seat for the weight to come off. I hope this is the way to go for me.4 -

Very busy day and work, Monday's usually are It was really weird coming into work and not seeing my boss. (first day since she retired) I noticed she "forgot" her coffee mug, so I'm taking that as a hint that she will be back for it and a visit
Went for a walk with my daughter for over an hour last night, a little windy, but that is normal where we live.1 -
Transitions
Hmmmm....for me, it seems to be happening more and more
First, my hubby being diagnosed with Stage 1 pancreatic cancer so transitioning to part-time caregiver. more things to do around the home as well especially since he's still in recovery mode from surgery 5 weeks ago
In the meantime, my youngest son and his fiancee have moved to Atlanta, GA while my husband is going through his treatment- they were living in IL.
It's been a tough year so far - I try to use my workouts as my channel to improve my mental health and wellbeing
But sometimes these transitions are hard to handle - going from a 3 kitty household to 2 kitties b/c we had to put down our oldest kitty who was such a loving cat at 15yo 3 weeks ago💔😥
So I don't know if I have any advice - just trying to take it a day, even an hour at a time some days & journaling7
