and that is why having a training buddy is such a good thing. They push you and you push them.

I forgot to post on Thursday night, 1800m of drills - lots of backstroke and some butterfly - which I don't do as my left shoulder screams loudly at me for a few days if I do more than 1-2 lengths.

I have always struggled with what the coach's call 6 Kick switch; 6 kicks - one freestyle stroke, repeat.
My right side is fine - on the left I tend to submarine which makes breathing a challenge. ;)
But if I change it to what some consider to be a harder drill ; 6 Kick switch with Catch up ( Touch hands before pulling stroke ) I am fine.
So my plan is to do alternate lengths of Catch up/Switch allowing me time to recover after Switch and slowly improve my technique. The whole concept of drills is to isolate a movement and improve it so any small modification that helps a good thing.

One of my fellow swim club members was in Calgary, AB for work meetings last week and stumbled on A Triathlon Club swim training open night. He only managed to complete 2700m of the clubs 4000m workout and was gassed. Made him realize that they trained at a level of intensity that he had never experienced.

1km this morning - very slow with many stops. Blasted a bit this weekend with BodyCombat and BodyPump so was a kind of recovery swim.

Signed up to a triple 5km in March 2019. 3 x 5km swims over 3 days. Now thinking about getting my pace up for it. Medium is less than 2 hours, but fast is 1hr30 - not quite there yet - think I can shave 10 mins off my time in 3 months? haha

Coming back from an unintentional several month hiatus. Starting my base training for Wisconsin 70.3 in June this week, which includes swimming (duh), so I finally drug myself out of bed and got back to master's swim before work.

    400m IM (50 kick/50 swim)

    2xs:
    8x25 free fast
    100m IM
    200m DPS

    100m cooldown

    2000m total

40 min yesterday. I'm not sure how many laps. I just swam until the cardio class started, then went to that.

I’ve just recently started at 20 minutes of swimming laps doing the breaststroke. I only have access to a rather small pool. Less than 25 meters. I too just go by time and how many laps I can do in that time. I’m getting faster which is good to see! I hope to build up to 30 minutes and then maybe 40.

That is good to know. I though my ~2 hours for 5km was slow. Now I'm medium. :D
I have little chance of reaching "fast."
To me, I was thinking in Olympic terms where 2 hours for 10km was fast. :);)

Yesterday was the last Adult swim Club until January.
Pool schedule conflicts with Swim Meets, School swim days, Christmas Break etc made it so they just couldn't fit it in this year.

    200m Warm up. Alt 50 Kick & 50 free/back.
Dryland Training Alphabet Soup - using your name to match to drills. Norwegian Heritage so lots of I's, L's, O's and N's in my name.
I = 45 sec Wall Sit had to do it 4 times
    L = 30 sec plank 4 times
    O = 15 crunchs 6 times
N = 15 Burpees 6 times Curse those silent repetitive letters.

    4 x 50m pull
    4 x 50m Dolphin Kick
    50m Fly
    50m Back
    50m Breast
    50m Free

Relay - 25m x 8 & the person that tags you call out what stroke you have to swim
Birthday swim for Amanda. She swims a 50 while we use Kick boards to create the biggest waves we can to disrupt her breathing. A real workout in the deep end as when you push a wave you have to do a strong Whip or Dolphin to counteract it.

Then for some fun they cranked up the water slide and dropped hockey pucks down the slide. When they hit the recovery pool you had to swim into the water slide outflow and grab a puck off the bottom of the pool - a real challenge. ( access gate was closed & locked so no one could get in the slide which would have been very dangerous )

Now I have to get my self motivation back and do a better job of hitting the pool.

Welcome to the thread @Kupla71 . Short pool or long pool doesn't matter. Straight time goals are a common way to start into an activity - wether it's swimming, running, walking. As the saying goes just add 1 more length to your swim each time and it tends to build up pretty fast.

    Bad at checking in.
Thursday hit the pool at noon for a straight lane swim. 3 per lane so it was pretty decent - especially since we were pace matched so not a lot of conflicts.
    2 x 30 lengths for 1500m of free.

Friday night Curling club was cancelled due to a Corporate Christmas party and Bonspiel that took over the facility for the weekend so I hit lane swim at 630pm. Turns out there was also a family hosting a Birthday party for their daughter so the open pool area was jammed with kids and adults. 3 of us in the lane swim area and just as I got to 40 lengths ( 1000m ) 3 more showed up so I bailed on the last 20 lengths as I know that 6 people would be very frustrating. Especially since there were going to be 4 very differant pace groups sharing the space which was going to create lots of conflicts. One of the ladies who showed up only does backstroke and wanders around the lane area - she just can't hold anything close to a straight line. The roof of the pool has Ribbed sheets running the length of the pool so it's easy to focus on a rib joint and use that as your guide or sneak a peek at the lane ropes. 1st world problems.

Finally got to the pool for some laps. It was a cold and windy week, so the thought of even getting wet was very off-putting, but I had evening events T, W and Th, so there were no swims those nights. Lucky for me, I have a long commute home, so even though I talked myself out of going on a Friday night, I had plenty of time to talk myself back into it. As usual, I made myself a deal: go and do 10 laps. Then re-evaluate. I know that by 10 laps, I'm always feeling really good, glad I went, blah, blah, blah... Ended up at 50 for the finish, but that's because I NEVER stop swimming if a song from Hamilton comes on, and my ipod played two in a row, which meant my 45 lap goal turned into 50.

Next week is a new week and I'm hoping for some good swims. I think lessons take a break, so the other pool should be quiet.

2600m solo swim - first swim in our one and only 50m pool that is only open for about 3 months of the year!

Bit of a shambles as was pretty much open water training having to sight for boys. No, not buoys. Boys. Twits who despite having five lanes for public swimming, think they still need to casually drift across the two lane swimming lanes. Idiots!!!

    I feel your pain.
Tried swimming a few times in a university pool. 50m. At least 10 lanes wide. No ropes. People swimming across the pool, and diagonally. Plus the water was about 90°F. For hit in the head, kicked, punched.
In the gym I go to now, there is one roped "fast lane." Slow people get in it doing a dangerous breast stroke Frog kick. I've gotten mothe than a few bruises there.
