Laura - my therapist mentioned something about treadmills a while back. She said the belt pulls your leg back farther than you naturally would when running outdoors. For me this was a big no-no with my past hip issues but I can imagine it might overstretch your calves as your foot comes back, thus stressing the Achilles tendon. The incline was probably a factor too. Breaking it up is great and doing some bike is very good for your leg strength. 11 or 12 degrees?? I would probably go out in that but I'd cover every inch of exposed skin except my eyes. Heck, I would dig out my ski goggles and go out!

I'm guessing what you're talking about with the belt is why mine have been slightly sore for the past few weeks. As far as my hips, my trainer has me run at a 1.0 incline because that's easier on my hips. I do cardio cross-train on my non-run days but haven't incorporated the bike into my run before, so that should be interesting. We just got over 0 degrees yesterday for the first time in close to a week, so 12 degrees is going to be balmy.

That's awesome! I wish I had a running partner right in my very own neighborhood. How convenient!

Tim, mad miss and rduhlir - Congrats on your commitments! I will be attempting my first half the first weekend in May. It seems a long way away, but it will be here before I know it! I can't wait!

Right now all running will have to wait. My leg hurts! No high impact (running included) allowed for 4 -7 days. By that time I will have had a procedure on the other leg, then the week after a second pass on the first leg, so I will be out of it until after New Year's. BIG TIME FROWNIE :-(!!!!

That's such a shame! I hope it all heals fast and you come back stronger than ever and ready for your HM in May but on the bright side, the days will already be getting longer again in a couple of weeks so at least you're missing the worst of the winter!

I sometimes wish I had someone to run with - but on the other hand, the appeal of just putting on my shoes when it suits me and going is half of what attracted me to running in the first place. :)

Bear poop found on the greenway! Oh boy, can't wait for my run there this weekend. Funny, they haven't been around for over a month and now they're showing up again?

Wow. I hope all the aches and pains get better!

Bear poop, hunh Tim? I see a PR in your future.

Love the lost inches, Romy. If you haven't lost weight and you're smaller, it's got to be fat, not LBM. You're probably more active and just not realizing it...which is a HUGE win.

I got a running partner today! I was able to talk my neighbor out of her hyperactive Vizsla. (the "going fast" dog is the Vizsla) http://www.runnersworld.com/running-tips/breed-apart

I didn't track the run, but I think I unconsciously pushed myself since I had a companion. I had to walk a couple times and got a side stitch, but we made it 2.5 miles. River plainly thinks I'm both crazy and slow, but I still enjoyed the company.

Lots of fun stuff on here tonight! I won't get to run, but I will be checking in to live vicariously! I am going to try the stationary bike...but she said no resistance. That's not much fun. :-( But still better than nothing I guess.
Did I mention no heavy lifting either? *sigh* Thanks for the kind words everyone. This will be hard. Thanks, Yam, for pointing out that this is the worst part of winter as far as light goes, so there's that at least. I makes me feel a wee bit better.

YAY! Romy! You MUST just be legitimately smaller. Like Varda said, you wouldn't be smaller if it was LBM. Go find yourself a super sexy dress for the party!

Congrats on your running partner Varda! That's fun! I am going to try to train my little rat terrier mix to run, but he doesn't tolerate heat or cold well, so he will have to be a fair weather running friend. I'm also not sure how he will take to it. He's a couch potato. So he will need a C25K approach. :-)

LOL! Varda and Tim about the bear poop! I have bears roam my yard sometimes. Thankfully I've never come upon one while I was running. I have however seen bears run, and they are super fast! They are also scared of people, unless its a mother who thinks you are threatening her cubs. But even then, If it makes you feel any better, your chances of being killed by a domestic dog, bees, or lightning are greater...a lovely thought!

Laura and Tim, your back and forth about the treadmill is very interesting and makes me feel validated in my hatred of them. :-) (Did I mention how very thankful I am that my gym has an indoor track?

Glad to hear you are enjoying your new gym, Ceci! (Happy for you it has an indoor track!)

Bummer about the shoes, mad miss. You will have to show us the new ones. Good luck tomorrow!!!

Hope you feel better as soon as possible Bttr!

Oh, Tim, bear poop! Be careful!

Sounds like a fun running partner, Varda! I'm sure that Fells thinks I'm silly for running so slow, too.

I, too, am trying very hard to avoid the treadmill!

Good Luck with the 8k tomorrow, madmiss!

I went for my regular 5k run this afternoon. Really nice weather considering, about 35F, with a breeze, but sunny. Went with my running gloves, and headband rather than my new winter hat and was comfortable. Not as easy a run as I was expecting. I felt drained before I even started and was tired and clumsy at the end. On the last little bit, from the bike trail to the parking lot, I decided to run on the dirt next to the fence and into the lot, rather than through the grass and over the packed snow into the lot, which is how I had gotten on the bike trail. This was a mistake. Because my glasses are transitional and so turn to sunglasses in the bright sun, I couldn't see that someone had dropped a bunch of brown branches on the brown dirt/mud path. I tripped and went flying. Nothing seriously hurt and Fells licked me until I got up. I actually finished the run since I had 0.1 miles to go, then limped home.

Colin and I have a nosework trial on Sunday, so no run then. I think this will be my last nosework trial. I'm getting frustrated with my dogs choosing food over the scent when given a choice, I don't seem to be able to change their behavior (since it makes sense to me too. :) ), so I've decided that I'm tired of banging my head against the wall and maybe we'll just stop with the first level title and not keep trying to get the second level one. Or at least wait a bit until I figure out how to get through this.

I got to run outside today for the first time in 2 weeks! It was cold and snowing and I didn't care.

The Yaktrax were awesome. My footing felt very secure. I found running on snow more tiring than I expected. I also quickly ruled out my usual route - my road is extremely narrow from snow banks and there was enough traffic to feel dangerous (barely room for two cars to meet much less two cars and a runner) so I ran back and forth on some quieter streets in my neighborhood - they're only 2 blocks long, but I ran back & forth on them for 5 miles anyway.

My trainer warned me that running on snow would be slow, and he was right. Took me 1:10:11 to run 5 miles (avg 14:02). The roads were a combination of loose snow, greasy snow, and packed snow where cars had driven or people had shoveled out into the street. Yaktrax did great on all of them.

The only reason I even know what you are talking about is because I read all the Susan Connant books. Anyway, I think that is SOOO COOL!

    Woo Hoo! Terrific! Great race!

Great getting out there, Laura! Maybe you can a park or something where it would be fun for you and your yaktraks to run.

Did my two water aerobics class this morning and then drove up to my mother's and we went out to dinner. The weather was much nicer in Maryland than it is up here in NJ. I really dislike freezing rain when everything gets so slick.

This morning I did a nice, easy 7.7 mile run with the running group. Was shooting for 8 miles but most of the group stopped short and I didn't want to be out in the cold wind any longer. Disappointing that no bears showed up on the greenway.

Thanks all!!! I dreamt about running all night ;)

Great job bts and rdu! And sorry there were no bears Tim, lol.

Today I have a photoshoot which is interrupting my long run "date", I am sad and happy by this because I love photographing people, but I love long Sunday run day and want to go out and try out the new, new shoes!!!! But I guess photoshoots pay for new new shoes, so it's a win win all around and I'll run when I get home ;)

Cool - I didn't know you were a photographer. That's my other hobby besides running but I haven't been so active lately. I've never done any paid work, only media work. Happy shooting!

Friday, I did my first run on the treadmill at the gym. It was different, but something I might be able to do from time to time when I can't get outside. I made about 3 miles.

Saturday I did a Zumba class and then some strength training.

    Today I have sore muscles!

Today was great....I ran outside for the first time in 3 weeks. It felt wonderful & I felt energized in the outdoors.
I went the hilly route and reclaimed "my" hill. Ran 6K in 52:08.
