New to Keto

Hi. I'm kicking off my keto diet today. I've done all the calculations, updated my goals in MFP, and have read plenty of content and materials regarding the keto approach.
Is there anything that might not be covered in the main keto discussion materials on the web that I might need to know?

Honestly, I would strongly recommend reading back over most of the posts from March (back to January, if you've the time)... There are some excellent pieces of advice, suggestions for surviving the first week, recipes, and just good old fashioned cheering... I read back often.0

* focus on carb maximums and protein minimums, use fat for satiety, performance, and calorie management, not to hit any kind of ratio
* calories aren't necessarily everything, but they aren't meaningless either
* don't bother with ketostix
* homemade mayo is super easy and awesome
* oven-baked bacon is better than pan-fried; keep temp at 325 (smoke point of lard is 370)0 -
just a suggestion. i did a complete blood work-up a week before keto & every 2 months since. Lipid breakdowns/ratios (HDL, LDL, Triglycerides), Liver markers (ALT,ALP,GGT), Inflammatory markers (CRP & ESR), HBA1C (sugar average), Kidney marker (Creatinine), etc.
Not a necessity but interesting to monitor & chart your health markers from a scientific standpoint.0 -
I'm starting today too! I'm going cold turkey Keto, no more high GI sweeteners or carbs for life... I've spent the last 10 weeks easing into good habits and I'm ready to jump in headfirst now... Best of luck!!0

To help keep the "flu" feeling at bay, make sure you aim for 4500 mg of sodium as a minimum, and supplement with potassium (lo-salt is half potassium) and magnesium (citrate if using pills) if you aren't getting it from your foods - especially if you "forget" the salt. You need the salt to retain enough water to function, and if your salt drops, so will the other two. Any headaches that aren't solved by salt, etc. fat load until you can't stand it. I did these things and I had mild headaches with my first step down, and with my second, mild sinus effects... Good luck all!0

Wow! Lots of great tips here! I'll definitely read back through the older posts.
And for those who are starting off too, good luck and feel free me to add me as a friend. I'll cheer you on!0 -

I got a bit of keto-flu my first week. I read after the first week that water and maybe more salt would have eased it. That said, I got through it with headache powders.
