Not in a week... first I was on a trip to see my son in college, and now I'm feeling a lot of pain every time I eat. (I suspect GERD or an ulcer) I can keep it together to go to work and put on a nice face when I teach OR swim, but not really both. Stupid having to earn a living...

Fun swim this morning. 400 yd warm up. Then alternated 100 pull/100 kick for a total of 800. Then swam 8 - 50 yd sprints with a friend (she leaves me eating her wake but that's ok) and then 100 breast stroke to cool down. I haven't done real sprints in many months and while I'll always be kind of slow (My best was :55), I have cut a second or two off my average sprint time over the last year. I think I'm better at not losing form once I speed up now.

Keeping going is something we all struggle with at times, whether it is illness (feel better, Noel) or motivation (mix it up Stephen and you'll be fine.) or injuries (well it looks like Emma just keeps on going and going anyway  ). Gently has it right that you just look at the longer term goals.

Welcome SwimmyD, this is a good group to be part of!

@stephenrhinton it was fly kick on back not full stroke lol

That's actually pretty fun! I love coming out of a backstroke turn and doing half the pool underwater!

I totally salute you then. I struggle to do 10m underwater without dying! Apparently the heart medication I am on reduces oxygen uptake by about 15% and I'll take that excuse lol. My coach says it'll benefit my backstroke races, but I said not if I do 12.5m then have to hop out and have a lie down on the side lol.

Awesome swimming everyone I love reading everyone's posts and the dedication and love of the best sport ever!!

    And a funny story.....
I was showing my 11yo son pictures of some of the pools I'll be swimming at in 2016. Initially he was jealous but then said "you deserve it for being a great mum." He then added "I never thought that your swimming would take you all over New Zealand and overseas." Reminded him that neither did I; and that I only got back into it to help me cope with being cheated on and lied to last year. His response - "well swimming is better than some dumb man anyway." LOL!

It will definitely benefit your races, turns and starts can definitely help determine a race and improve your times. Especially backstroke

So today I officially joined a masters swim team! So psyched! Also excited to post workouts here! I have actually been working out with them for the past month or so. It was hard to get back in the pool with a swim team after a 4 year absence, especially a team doimnated by 25 to 35 year old males and the youngest female is 10 years younger than me! Ratio of males to females is 6 to 1! Which will keep me on my toes!
    So today's workout:
    75 minutes
    3500m total
    400m warm up
    4x100 (100 slow, 100 medium, 100 medium fast, 100 FAST)
    4x200 (200 slow, 200 medium etc)
    4x400 ( same as above)
all based on 2min per 100
    300 cool down

    Tuesday 2.5 km 56 min
    Wednesday 2.5 km 54 min

Thursday went for a long walk with a friend - I think 11 km in between 2 and 2.5 hours.
It was another reminder how much my swimming (without drills) doesn't translate to leg fitness. My feet were sore and I was tired after that walk.
    I'm thinking of running 10km or 21km November 30!
I'm going to be trying to mix running and swimming over the next 3 weeks.

The problem is that I then hoped to participate in a 5 km swimathon on December 5th (five days after the long run) and hopefully make an attempt at a 15km swim by end year.
The running/ walking definitely interferes with my comfort in the pool - and for 5 or 15km swims would have preferred to be fully comfortable and not having sore feet from running!
Also to prepare for a 15km swim, I should ideally be swimming at least a total of 15km per week. It'll be hard enough to find the time to do that sort of distance per week even without preparation for the run.
Anyway, will take it day by day and see how it goes!

Great to see all the swims people.
For those struggling with motivation but still not losing touch with the pool altogether, hang in there.
I see quite a few of us are also piling on the yardage with up to 4 km swims. Good stuff!
Emma glad to hear that it helped as a coping mechanism but has transformed into so much more. Whenever I think of New Zealand what comes to mind is rugby and the All Blacks, so now I'll be thinking of blisteringly fast swimmers too  (and as for the swimmer aging into your age group, just make sure you're faster than her by the time she arrives LOL)!

I did... along with everybody else in the greater SW area, lol. Holy smokes was the pool crowded! minimum of 4 to a lane, 5 in the fast lanes. It was really fun though. I took my daughter because she missed swim team yesterday. She was not up for it, but I figured that before the end, she'd feel really good. True enough. I didn't have a great swim, but about 2/3 in, it got better and better. By the end, I was wishing we could stay. I just had too dang much to do today. Hooray for us for going though. It would have been sooo easy to stay indoors on this windy, rainy November day.

    Not happy!!!

Our government accident compensation department have decided in their infinite wisdom that my shoulder injury, latterly diagnosed as a full thickness rotator cuff tear and subluxated bicep tendon, should have resolved itself by now, and will not cover any further treatment. I guess that solves the dilemma of whether or not to go ahead with the surgery. But it also means no more physio which was actually helping.

As an aside, having read the report, I've discovered there's a lot more wrong with my shoulder than the specialist told me. Which makes me nervous about swimming once again. Ignorance was bliss.

My first race of the season yesterday. 1km ocean swim and I did it in 26 minutes which is less than I did last year! Hoping to move up to 2 km by the end of the season

@emmab0902 Mis-diagnosed by the "experts" - and you lose Physio-benefits because of that. Time for a fight.
If you have the surgery are you then eligible for a whole new round of Physio during recovery ?

@juliet3455 I can't have surgery now because it won't be funded and so my only options are swimming with pain and hoping it doesn't get worse, or giving up swimming.

    That just sucks!
Thought of throwing in some cycling and/or running into the mix?
    Transforming yourself into a triathlete?
Have a feeling you'd probably be quite good at it too!

I've just started running but thankfully don't own a bike. My ex who cheated and was the catalyst for getting back into swimming did Ironman events which puts me off lol.

    In the meantime....

    Tonight
    2400m

    4X 50 free on 60
    4X 50 br on 1.15
    4X 100 fly with fins on 2.15
8X75 free on 1.15 hold same pace (all 59-60s)
    2X 300 free as 100 fast 200 steady
    4X 100 pull

    Hurt a lot!

I'm so sorry Emma - that is tough.....

My only thought is you might want to consider swim training/practise that is based on Alexander Technique principles ...ie not putting your body under strain, injury avoidance, through 'holding' and moving your body in a more 'natural' way. It is good for back issues, rsi type stuff and also shoulder pain. Some pro swimmers swear by it too... Google steve Shaw as an example.

Well done Captain and Alicia... That's good to read.

I did 1200 in c40 mins - it felt a lot better today. A good swim.

Blowy and blustery here in London too Curly. Nearly lost my hat in the park in the way back - lovely autumn leaves etc., I love autumn.

    1500y 43:41

I was thinking of the swimming to walking conversion ratio at a 1:4 recently. I wasn't feeling the swimming love, so I took a walk for an hour yesterday. I wasn't especially pushing, but I did get red in the face and was sweating. So exertion was moderately okay.

I walked 2.84 miles (roughly 5000 yards) in an hour. So, I did the conversion to see what that would be like swimming.

It would be like swimming 1250 yards in an hour. Now, I'm *ahem* slow as Christmas and all, but I do swim about 80% faster than that even when I'm not pushing hard.

So either that conversion is way off, or I push myself a lot harder in the pool, or swimming is just easy.

I had a weird, stressful weekend without enough sleep. This morning I arrived at the pool late and left early and didn't count a thing. I'm glad I went though. I have to get on a plane today and then turn around and come back tomorrow so some exercise was the right thing. Sorry to hear about your shoulder, Emma.
