Maybe just one last post that attaches the direct links immediately after the question?
I can gather some of those links to help if that's what's being suggested.
Yes but like Ralf mentioned people don't seem to look at them lol Maybe when one of those questions are asked, we can kindly direct them to the launchpad. For example:
How can I know if I am in ketosis?
Member answers briefly and then says "Please take a look at our stickypad, it has a wealth of informations and answers to most Keto/Lc questions " I see that most mods do that but after like 12 responses from us regular members lol. Maybe if we all got in the habit of doing that it would work ya know? IDK just my opinion
Yep, I do think the LP would be used more if the advice to consult it were given often and consistently!1 -
I think part of it is that people don't want to read...especially if it's long. I know the information is helpful but some people want to be given a cheat sheet instead of reading the whole thing.
The article @Sunny_Bunny_ posted re: keto straight talk...I opened it up, read the first few paragraphs and then just went 'Ah, this is too long'.
I like cheat sheets too...maybe as an introduction: Keto Cliff Notes?5 -

I started to try to give points on what the article said but quickly realized it was just so perfectly stated there about as short and simple as was possible. That's why I was so adamant that people read it. I hesitated to get started reading it at first too when she noted how long it was "even for her" because she definitely writes a lot. But, I've really become a huge fan of hers since recently discovering her blog. She had such a great way of dishing it out straight but letting you know she understands and isn't judging but sincerely trying to help make things clear and simple so that more people can be successful. Because let's face it, when people fail at low carb, it's typically because they were aiming for something waaaay too specific besides simple health and weight loss. Or became overwhelmed with trying to decipher the science that so many of us love that can so easily over complicate a really simple thing.0 -

My joke at work is my attention span is so short I could almost be in sales. ooh...squirrel!
Anyway, bullet points are good. I like the launchpad, but I like the other parts of the announcement section better because they are more specific. I love the fact there is now the "diabetic discussion" section because everyone who is diabetic can quickly go to those items which are most relevant.
Perhaps leave the "Start Here" announcement, but then also put individual sections from it as stand alone announcements such as the one for recipes and the one for FAQ that are inside of the Start Here announcement. One of them is "Open Threads- Member threads full of information on many topics of interest to low-carbers. Counting calories vs. not counting, favorite podcasts, ketostix, health issues/troubleshooting, motivational posts, success stories: you find all of those and more in this collection." That covers many of the common questions above. When going into the LP, there is just so much, it could seem a bit overwhelming for a newbie.
BTW, my name is Cliff. I feel like those Cliff Notes were made specifically for me.2 -

I don't want to be a downer about the FAQ, but that's a lot to work up in 2 days...Plus I spent a lot of time writing the stuff in the LP. Which is good stuff. Should someone actually have the drive to read for a min. Being trained in Technical Writing, I got it as concise and user-friendly as possible. I'll pen a TL;DR, if anyone thinks that would be a plus... Keep in mind though that regardless, people don't read stickies unless they are linked. Well, I do, but I'm a former librarian nerd. But I can't get the Cliff Notes done in 2 days. I need to play a serious game of Toy Tetris today or Hubby is going to rebel. And schoolroom tidying and lesson plans will take up the bulk of my Saturday. I'll get there, but that will take time.
I will look into a Diabetes FAQ for the near future, but that's not my area of expertise... that will take a bunch of research on my part. One of the diabetic amateur experts might be better suited to contribute answers, if not them writing the whole thing. I'm good at writing and research, but nothing beats first-person experience. So if someone wants to write it, I'll edit/format. Or if they just want to collaborate with me and us all work on that, I'll fit it in. I'll repost @RalfLott 's diabetic FAQ list in the Everything Diabetes thread and see if we have any takers or info or any additional questions they can think of to get the ball rolling on that one.
But we can try placing the Open Threads in the stickies. The 90 Day Challenge will be over on the 1st, and I'll take down the Electrolytes piece since nobody reads it in the sticky anyway. It will still be in the LP in the FAQ section. The problem with 10 stickies is that, the more stickies we have, the fewer active posts are displayed on the front page. People also don't want to have to click to the 2nd page. That's effort. And the other mods and I agree it's ugly. So we like to minimize the clutter if possible.
We've made it as easy as it's going to be for people to get the info they need. If they still aren't willing to click twice to learn, then you can lead a horse to water... I know this sounds mean. I'm not trying to be like that. I'm just practical and a realist. I've seen what happens over and over. This is an issue in Reddit keto and other forums. They all struggle getting people to read stickies and FAQs. For the most part, we just have to be patient with people.
I'll add something in the Group description about the LP or to read the stickies. You'll still have to post the link to whatever in threads, though. That's just the way it is. Nature of the beast. If someone hasn't posted it yet or answered by the time I see it, then I'll post links, but I have stuff that interrupts my omnipotence/omniscience, like darn demanding children and homeschooling and a touchy spouse. So...y'know how it is...5 -

@baconslave You do wonderful things. You are the main reason I came back to this forum and you've snatched my *kitten* up and hauled me forward when I needed it. You are super helpful and always respond. You are selfless when it comes to advising.
If you can't get some things done, dammit it's because you've already done it! Newbies need to take some responsibility for researching such a huge change in woe. Maybe make a STOP BEING SO *kitten* LAZY AND SELF ENTITLED AND DO SOME *kitten* RESEARCH! sticky.
If a person can find mfp and this forum, why the hell can't they Google?7 -
I made a Newbie thread also so we can keep it bumped. It contains links to the LP and the Open Threads. They can post further questions.

@SuperCarLori - I don't think I can put it quite so bluntly.
I don't mind newbie questions. But repeat threads on the same thing do indeed clog the feed and there are many veterans who are frustrated by it. I've had multiple members appeal to me about it. I used to be active in r/keto (that's where I got my start) and those veterans were frustrated as well. I was new for a few months, and I got frustrated by it. I do hope all the changes I've made today will not only help Newbies get the information they need to establish their new WOE into a WOL, and give them the support they need as they are navigating new waters, but also keep from flooding all the other discussions out in the process.

I'm stinky but I always have been. I'm one of those women who gets so sweaty that I need to bring extra clothes if I work out over an hour because it will be saturated. Yuck.
Anyways, my stinkless plan is shave, use an astringent like witch hazel, use coconut oil (antibacterial) and then use an antipersperant (deoderant s useless to me). If I do this, I can go the whole day without smelling me, unless i exercise...2 -
@baconslave totally agree with you about everything, esp leading a horse to water. Thank you so much for your hard work here!!

I just have to say as a newbie myself, that even though it might be annoying to some of you veterans it is nice to have a place where you can come to get answers to questions. I have joined other groups in the past where all the members seemed to already be friends and new parties weren't really included in the conversations or acknowledged. So this group is definitely superior in that respect.
Now I can say that personally I did jump right in and read all/most of the LP items as soon as becoming a member, but I realize that not all do. I think just referring them to the LP is completely acceptable for questions that are already answered there.
However, since there really isn't a search option for open threads sometimes we may have to ask a question that has already been answered 25 times. And that is only because (due to work and family responsibilities) we might not all be able to spend a week going through every post that's every been posted.
I understand that's why the LP was most likely invented and I don't think there's anything wrong with it as is.
Thanks Mods for all your hard work!3 -

Haha, I'm such a hippie. My deodorant is coconut oil with essential oils, just because I do get such that I can't stand myself. The CO and EOs just kill the bacteria that cause the funk, and I'm good to go!3 -

Rub some peppermint or lavender oil in your mustache (or upper lip, as the case may be) and enjoy the day?1 -

Woo hoo for homemade deodorant!! Do you make yours? I tried tea tree oil and I got hella rash! Although... Could have been the ratio of co to baking soda....1 -

Well the notable Open Threads are in the sticky now. If a really helpful thread comes up, then we'll link it. It stinks that we can't search. If the group were Public, then there's a Google search work-around to help search the group, but many of the members felt safer in here where haters could not just come in and cause trouble, so it's kept Private.
I've had to find specific posts, and OMG what a complete headache! So I feel for anyone trying to find something specific in this framework as it is, believe me.2 -

I don't go to other forums. Despite the amount I may reply on here, I really am not a social media type person. I AM someone who wants complete information if I am going to significantly change something as important as my WOE especially when it is due to health issues. That said, I agree it is much better that this is private simply because haters will be haters and making this public would just turn it into something that would resemble what keeps me away from most social media.
I think the consistent bumping of the LP thread and the newbie thread @baconslave made are probably the best things we can do.
I am thankful for both new and old here because getting new perspectives is as important as getting help from the experienced. I plan to stay involved here because I will never know everything and I feel obligated to help if/when I can due to the help I have received.2 -

Yep. My last spin in an outside nutrition forum (not related iin any way to MFP) drew the cheerful comment, "You're courting kidney trouble and mercury poisoning from all the fish you eat." (About 4x/week) And that was the lone substantive reply!0 -

Maybe we could furnish some sensible google search URLs for our new friends.
For example, googling "diabetes low carb" will bring up the *kitten* ADA, which will tell you:In the past, people with diabetes were told to completely avoid sugar. Experts thought that eating sugar would raise blood glucose levels very high.
Research around this issue has shown that while the type of carbohydrate can affect how quickly blood glucose levels rise, the total amount of carbohydrate you eat affects blood glucose levels more than the type. Now experts agree that you can substitute small amounts of sugar for other carbohydrate containing foods into your meal plan and still keep your blood glucose levels on track.

For many people, having about 45 to 60 grams at meals is about right.
But searching "diabetes ketogenic" is an entirely different ball game!
(I got this cheerful article among my top 5:

Yes! On some 2017 trend list I read it said Keto would be the hot diet trend of 2017, so there may be more than the usual resolution crowd joining. Whatever makes our WOE easier and more mainstream...I'm all for it!!!
Interesting! That's pretty cool! My BIL has been keto for almost a year now and my sister just said she's planning to start in January, too (T2D, tried keto before and ended up gaining weight and going off but she thinks she didn't do it quite right). I have another friend who just told me she plans to go keto starting tomorrow!2 -

Love you baconslave. Had to be said. The launchpad in the announcements has guided me through the transition from 40/30/30 eating to lchf eating. I point others in the general thread to this group regularly. Hope your New Year ROCKS.1 -
The tides feel like they are turning. Maybe the time will come soon that we will feel more comfortable not having the private status. I feel like the level of acceptance has greatly increased in the almost 2 years I've been into it. If it keeps going this way, we may not have to worry so much about the hater-ade6

Speaking of the breath....Does it really ever go away? LOL I'm about to kill my husband off!
Yes it does, thankfully. I had about a week of stanky breath. Worst part was I couldn't detect it at all, so embarrassing when my hubby pointed it out while we were out and about shopping. It was a rough week for my husband, lol. I wasn't allowed to talk in the car or the bed.1 -
