Nothing much happening here. We had trash day today so I managed to put out four 30-gallon bags plus a large assortment of boxes. More lab results are back in; I need to have a colonscopy. That specialist called with the appointment and it is on the same day I see the urologist. One is in the morning and one in the afternoon. I guess I'll have lunch in between the verdicts. I knew I would likely be having another bladder scope but not the other; that makes two cleansing routines. Ugh!

I'm off to one of my ophthalmologists today. It's at a Hopkins outpost. I called the other day to make mammogram and CT appointments. They could tell from their computer that I'd be there today and they wanted to know if I wanted the appointments today. I managed not to laugh out loud. All I know for sure is I'll be at the ophthalmologist for hours and hours for about 15 minutes of appointment time. No way I could schedule anything else. Their schedule is awful. You'd think these doctors would revolt. It can't be fun having a day with so many patients all of whom are incredibly frustrated at how long they've been sitting.

Maryanne--Wait time can be outrageous. I am fortunate to have specialists that have reasonable wait time. I would think they know what the average time is for a patient and book accordingly. Yes, some patients might require more than the average time which would throw the schedule off but it is possible plan. On my last visit, I had to wait 30 minutes past my appointment time.

My ophthalmologist appointments are like yours, Maryanne. I always have to wait at least 20 minutes before I'm called back to the exam room, where preliminary tests are done and history is updated. Then they put in the eye drops to dilate my eyes and I'm sent back to the waiting room for at least another 30-45 minutes before I'm called back to actually see the doctor for 5 minutes. This is true for both my regular opthalmology appointments and the retina specialist. Very annoying, but what can you do.

I had my friend over last night for a glass of wine and visit. She is gradually getting more comfortable with leaving her husband alone and seemed to really enjoy our time together. We've both been busy and haven't had a chance to talk in almost a month, so it was nice to have some uninterrupted time together.

I was reading a little about Medifast. I have no intention of doing anything but using a few of their items for variety (if any are better than what I've tried so far) but I was curious. The little I read made it seem like Medifast is essentially packet day on steroids. How long can anyone live just eating packets?

    Hi there!

When you say packets, do you mean packaged food? I'm on Medifast and, while I do consume 5 of their pre-packaged products every day, I also get to have a "lean and green" meal. So I get protein and tons of veggies on top of the Medifast products. They call it the "5&1 plan." I really like it so far!

Best of luck on your journey!

Thanks! I have what I call "packet day", eating a lot of high protein food in packets, mostly from dietdirect.com. A very low calorie day and I don't get hungry. But I couldn't do it very often. I'm glad to hear Medifast is working for you! How long have you been doing it? Maryanne

I have considered Medifast but when looking at the stats and how it is done, it resembles very much Diet Direct's official weight loss plan.

I am awaiting the rains and hopefully it won't be like the rain of last year as this is the one-year anniversary of the rain that wiped out homes, businesses and destroyed the access road and bridge to a shopping center which trapped people until they could be airlifted out. After a year complicated by legal procedures, etc, they are finally restoring the access road and 23 of the 25 businesses plan to return to the shopping center, including the La Quinta Inn which had just opened when the disaster happened.

Jean - I'll hope that this rain isn't as bad. It's raining here as well. They are already talking about tropical storms on the news. Very early since they are toward the beginning of the alphabet. We never used to hear about them until well after Labor Day.

    Hi Maryanne,

Yes, I researched DietDirect and the program is very much like Medifast. In fact the WonderSlim products very similar. I'm only on week two, so I have a long way to go!

Traeekins--You may have a long way to go but two weeks is a significant step. Keep up the good work.

Maryanne--We were fortunate with the rains this time. It is sunny but muggy now.

I just got an email from Diet Direct that my "rewards" were expiring so checked the sale and made another order. 20% off wonderslim right now, free shipping plus my $11 in "rewards". I'll be stocked on pancakes, chicken noodle soup and pudding for awhile!

Maryanne--I love their pancake mix. I will wait until the next sale as I have plenty on hand right now of various WonderSlim products. I quit using them when I went through the "woe is me" phase.

I have decided tomorrow begins the diligent phase again. Since I'll be doing the prep again likely next month I might as well get used to the lean approach again. It amazes me when you have to do that prep that you don't feel hungry.

Last year at this time I was plotting how to get her. I had my eyes on July 4, because that's one of the few days during the year that the automotive supply store is closed. I was actually lying awake at night fretting. When I went over on the 3rd to feed, I had a carrier with me and just couldn't wait any longer. I had to go for it. I set the carrier up on end next to where I put the food and just popped her in. (One of those do what I say, not what I do moments.)

I can't believe how long it's taken to get to this point of having her here and almost healed.

    She's a character for sure!

Pam--I am so glad that your friend was able to visit and have some relaxing time with you.

Maryanne--I conider putting cats in carriers one of llife's biggest challenges. A year of great care from you can do wonders.

Last evening, I decided I would have a 'last supper' before trying to be good. I got a carry out of an Italian sub and onion rings. I could eat only half of the sub so it is in the fridge. So much for those plans as the sub is great. I did, however, just have an Atkins shake for breakfast

I'm having the Special K breakfast sandwich. I know that some said it wasn't that healthy but it fills me up, satisfies me and is acceptable in calories. I will have the low fat greek yogurt for mid-morning snack for 12g of protein and 90 calories

We finally are getting a stretch of nice weather days. It's about time. We had heavy rains Saturday morning but fortunately it clear up around noon. Our friend was having an outdoor party that night and we were doubting whether she would be able to have it. Everything went off without a hitch. I'm running errands this afternoon. We have doctor and dental appointments this week. That's the one downside of staying so long in FL. We end up stacking up appointments for the first 4-6 weeks after we get home. I've gotten reminders on 2 other appointments I haven't set up yet so I'll call this week to set them up. DH starts cardio rehab in early August. He can choose 2 or 3 sessions a week. We're leaning towards 3 because the program is 36 sessions. He wants to be done before Thanksgiving so it doesn't delay going back to FL next winter. One of the guests at the party had recently finished cardio rehab and was able to answer some questions about what takes place there. He lost 30 pounds since we'd seen him. I think it was a combo of dietary changes after his heart attack and the exercise rehab classes. He also said he on longer snacks after dinner. Sometimes he goes to bed hungry but he's stuck to his program. DH doesn't really have to lose weight. He's within 10 pounds of his high school weight. But the exercise should put him in better cardiac condition. He rarely does regular exercise at home. he does a lot of DIY projects and counts that as his exercise. So he's active but the projects don't raise his cardio rate like exercise does. he is good at following a program so I think the classes will be a good thing for him.

Maryanne, what was it about Indy that prompted you to want to catch her over some of the other cats? Is she affectionate after living with you for a year?

Helene--Playing catch up on appointments can be a challenge; hopefully, most of them are in easy driving distance. I do hope your DH benefits from the cardio therapy. I think choosing 3 days a week is a good move. If it proves to be challenging, then it can go to two days.

From today's Weight Loss Minute email by Linda Spangle:

    Committed means NO MATTER WHAT!

When you're truly committed to achieving your goals, you have an entirely different outlook. Unlike being interested, where it doesn't take much to detract you from your goals, being committed means you stick with it, no matter what.

Rather than depending on seeing results to help you stay on track, you work on keeping your motivation strong, and trust that results will follow.

And when you struggle, you don't blame circumstances or other people. Instead, you push hard to stay on your diet in spite of not having enough money, time, or supportive friends and family members.

Look carefully at your current efforts. If you say that you're "trying so hard to lose weight" but you aren't making progress, you're probably taking the interested approach. If so, strive for being committed instead.

Start adopting a "no matter what" attitude, then convince yourself you can stay with your goals regardless of your daily challenges.
