We all do. It becomes a neverending process, at least it definitely has for me. It started with "look like a person and not the human version of a pile of laundry covered in mayonnaise". Now, it's "bigger, stronger, faster".
It's getting even more intense now that my interest has drifted away from powerlifting and toward strongman.4 -
I told a colleague at work about my weight gain during my holiday, and the fact that it had now virtually all come off again, and she replied "Yeah, but you're gonna stop soon, right? It's important to not become obsessed by it...."
Well, no, I'm not gonna stop soon, because this is a lifestyle and until I'm completely happy with the way I want to be, I'll stay in ketosis, and once I get to where I want to be, I'll eat to maintenance. The odd lapse will neither kill me nor deter me.
And while I do get what she means about obsession - The fact is, I have just had a holiday abroad, and philosophically abandoned myself to the reality of being obliged to take in carbs (which were for the most part ok-enjoyable, but nothing to rave about), then no way am I obsessed.6 -
IMHO there's nothing wrong with a little obsession, unless / until it starts to negatively affect your life.
I would call myself obsessed with getting in shape. If I wasn't obsessed, I would likely have quit / given up months ago. I wouldn't have done my cardio workouts the past 405 days in a row, or checked in here and logged my meals the past 220 days in a row.
If that obsession meant I was avoiding going out with my friends because that would interfere with my WOE or my workouts, or if I was skipping work to hit the gym, etc, then that's where obsession becomes a problem. That's when they start calling it a disorder.
Staying obsessed with getting healthy is a good thing, I think.11 -
Yes, I agree, I very much think it's a question of interpretation. There are many other examples of diverse perceptions....
When it's used as a tool, it can overcome obstacles that might have appeared insurmountable.
When it breaks free and overwhelms us, it can have us in a grip we feel powerless to resist.
I think the word 'obsession' has an overall negative connotation to many, though.2 -
Alezandra, that is why I usually say I am dedicated to my health and fitness. I am getting near the 1000 day mark and this is my second streak on MFP. I've actually been logging longer than that.
I agree with Seph_Marks if it gets in the way of doing the ordinary things and socializing in my life, then it would be a disorder.5 -
I'm soon to hit 1600 days tracking/checking in. I don't consider it an obsession.
It was a tool for weight loss and remains a tool for maintenance. I track foods about 95% of the time and have been known to take breaks either when on vacation or "just because". I'm currently a bit lax in tracking "just because". All I need is a general idea of where I stand every day with carbs and calories. My food diary isn't precise at this time.
I probably don't even need to track foods but why not? I have a system in place so it might take me 5 minutes a day. More like 2 or 3 minutes. Honestly I've found that if something is not on my (now) "Top 125" list, I probably shouldn't be eating it so I don't.
Dr. Westman has his "If It is Not on Page 4 Don't Eat It" list. I have my "Top 125".3 -

Ok guys. This the progress thread, progress meaning "the onward movement towards a destination." I'm still in prep. I realized I was starting to develop an unhealthy relationship with food so I took a break from cutting and ate at maintenance for a few weeks. The October show is out of the question. But I'm still lifting heavy, still eating whole, unprocessed foods. The reason I'm posting this is because progress is not linear. Trying to change your body composition is hard work. But I'm moving forward.
In my last post, I lost 5 pounds. Since then, I gained back 2 of those pounds and was feeling defeated...so I thought I would post my starting picture and my most recent. You can't really see a difference, but I thought I'd share. (Hint: the "after" picture is where my hair is longer) The main difference between the two is my mentality. If my body is not show ready by a particular date, no hard feelings. I am going to continue pushing and choose a show date when my body is ready. Not the other way around. Slow and consistent. Also, I can now squat 190lbs for 4 reps....The girl in the before picture couldn't do that.

I have limited shots of myself but here is a before headshot and a headshot after I reached my goal weight. The first headshot was my motivation to loss the weight and keep it off, I was up and down, but Keto/LCHF/fasting got me where I wanted to be and I can eat this way forever. I love eating this way, honestly I miss fresh baked bread, but now I just do keto breads and I'm fine with those. I used to be a drug counselor, and the first shot made me see I was and addict to carbs, I realized things had to change for me. Also I was in menopause phase in that first shot, I have been post menopausal for sometime now, so no "older women can't lose weight" thoughts should keep us older women from being the best we can be.

@LolaDeeDaisy23 - I know this is going to sound strange, but I'm so damned proud of you. When we start tipping over into disordered eating, we have got to stop, take stock, and make changes. This had feel so negative to you to back track in order to continue with healthy progression!!! You look amazing and the muscle definition differences are absolutely incredible. Keep at this, strong woman! You're definitely an inspiration.4 -
Kudos to everyone. I'd gotten behind on this post - and just caught up since the beginning of February or March I think. Congrats to all on their progress, whether physical, mental, emotional, or any combination thereof... Y'all all inspire me every day.1

Wow you guys are doing great and motivating me to share. I haven't wanted anyone to see my before pics. I am 4'11" and was at 249 pounds. I am now at 193 but when the after pic was taken I was around 200.

On the left, over 400 pounds. On the right, approx. 225 lbs, crossing the finish line after a 25km walk two weeks ago.
Not really a fair comparison, sitting vs standing, but I didn't do a lot of standing prior to 2016, and have very few photos of myself.
About 45 pounds to go, to hit my goal.40 -

OMG, people don't even recognize you know if they haven't seen you recently I bet. You look so very healthy and happy in the after picture.2 -
