WaistAways Team Chat - August 2020

Hi everyone I'm Jackie and I've been a member of this team for a few months now. I live with my husband of 8 years and our cat in Michigan, USA. I work as a therapist for mental health and addictions which requires a lot of sitting 😬 we recently started transitioning back into the office for some face to face visits which means I walk a little bit more on those days.
My main reason for wanting to lose weight is to be healthier and have a baby. We've been trying for our first since August 2018. It's been very challenging as I have PCOS, which also makes weight loss a struggle. I had lost over 40lbs (from 269lbs to about 226lbs) but between fertility meds, holidays, and then COVID-19 stress and gym closure I gained some back (up to 245-ish back in April). I've been trying for the past few months to get out of the 240's and got a little bit closer to that goal in July.
I'm very grateful for this team keeping me accountable and offering support. I probably would have given up by now if it were not for that!
For August I really want to be out of the 240s. To get there, I need to maintain a calorie deficit and have a decent amount of physical activity. I like the idea of @evangsimmons170 30-day calorie deficit challenge and I'm going to adopt that for myself with a little bit of moderation, I'll be happy with any calorie deficit as long as I'm not eating more than 100 exercise calories each day. My current calorie goal is 1450/day so that allows me no more than 1550 on the days I'm more physically active. I'm also going to continue my goal of 3 days of intentional exercise each week and get back on track with my daily step goal which I will specify in another post.4 -
Greetings my wonderful team!
My name is Kristi and I am 38 and live in the US in Washington state. I have been married to my awesome husband for 13 years and we have 3 elementary aged kids. We are a very active family and like to be outdoors.
My highest weight was 255 in Feb 2019 and currently I'm 214.6. The weight gain was a combo of stress, pregnancies and hormone stuff. I started with noom which really helped me get my thinking straight (I'm a recovering perfectionist/all or nothing/black and white thinker) I started with this group in December 2019 and find the support and encouragement so helpful. It gives such a realistic view of what real weight loss actually looks like. It's slow, takes lots of dedication and a willingness to get up when you fail and try again.
Things I want to work on in August! I'm having a hard time coming up with stuff this month. My husband and I both work for the schools and we are not sure what fall will look like. My husband might become a stay at home dad and we would be a single income family. We have planned ahead for this situation but still scary 😳. I have discontinued my streaming workouts and purchased dvds or streaming videos that I have unlimited access too. My home workout equipment is well stocked so I won't miss a workout. I love Rhonda's chart and focusing on a 100 calorie deficit. I also want to watch the stress level this month. I anticipate that could really derail me.3 -
Let's have a big shout out to these lovely people hitting some major milestones!!!!

Hi team! My name is Amber, I'm 32 and I live in the extremely roasted prairies of Western Canada. This heat wave is intense, I'm definitely feeling more like a puddle than a person.
My highest weight was recorded at 276 and my lowest, last week, at 175. Today I'm up a bit but we had pancakes for dinner last night so that's probably to be expected.
In August I suppose I'm just trying to get down to, or possibly even below, 170. Gotta get my water intake back up too, I trailed off with that since I wasn't feeling well. My Covid test came back negative though so it's just a small summer flu.6 -
Hello All,
My saturday weight (yesterday, 1st August) was 136.4.

Wow! Sundays are so crazy. I spend the morning doing the tallies, getting the spreadsheets all up to date, figuring out which challenge to set up for the week, and then you all post like crazy! It is a LOT of a good thing. Luckily it is only one day a week, and today is rainy and dull outside anyhow
I'll try to catch up a bit!
@Cerizez - thanks for the update! We could have used that loss of yours to make our week look a bit better, but no worries. Better late than never, and you are doing great!
@jguldi11 for someone in a funk and not feeling too great, you did well last week! Nice loss, even if you wish it were more, green is green!
@tobeme3 welcome! It is great to have someone else from Québec in the group - there is even hope we might meet some day. Sounds like you had some tough injuries, and then (as you say) winter happened. Well, you are here now and I think this group could really help you keep the calories in under control, and the calories burned burning! If you even want to come out to the Townships to bike, let me know - my son is a biking fanatic and knows all the good places to go. I'm more of a moderate biker - but we do have good trails of all kinds. Which university were you or are you going to? I taught at Concordia for 37 years, so I know lots of profs from all the universities in town.
@Terytha - and probably @CanadianGiraffe - keep cool! Heatwaves are not fun, but at least up where you are, it can't last TOO long
Welcome to one more new member! @BaileyCat88 will be along shortly
Keep well, everyone - I really have to get outside now that there seems to be a break in the rain. Check out the week 1 challenge!

@jugar thank you, to be honest the weight loss this week was a bit of a surprise, a good one of course!
I just realized I didn't formally welcome all our new/returning teammates - so WELCOME!!
🎆👋😁👍🎉
You will find so much support and encouragement here!
A friend inspired me to go to the gym with her and I feel so much better getting a workout in. I'm meeting friends for dinner tomorrow and I plan on scoping out the menu today so I can plan ahead. I find this is the best way to avoid over-indulging.
I looked at the challenge for the week; the person I find inspiring is @evangsimmons170 as she encourages me (and many others!) to be active with the Fitbit challenges.5 -
A good day for me. Went for a swim in the pond this morning. 90m of open water. Was pretty amazing but not for the squeamish (fish, ducks and loads of algae). So refreshing.
Then went to an outside class tonight, worked hard.
I didn't log but I'm pretty sure I stayed under my calorie limit as I had no time to eat much.5 -

Hi Team Waist Aways!
I'm excited to be a part of the team - this is my first experience. I'm a 5th & 6th grade teacher and I live on an island in Puget Sound near Seattle. Usually I'm pretty active but being home has been a bummer. I'm looking forward to learning more about fitness and celebrating our successes together!
My weigh-in day will be Friday and I'm just starting out at 177 lbs.
Thanks for having me as a part of your team!

Hi there, Vikki here, I'm 48, mother of 3 grown kids, I live in Maryland. I've been fortunate in not having to change my work life, I still get to go to the office, and our spare time is spent canoeing, kayaking and camping so life hasn't changed much for me at all with the covid stuff.
I have struggled with my weight since pretty much forever, but since joining this group I've found they help me back on the wagon much quicker than doing it myself... I've lost 26lbs since i joined the group last oct... not great, but any other time I would have given up and gained that back already... This really is a great group, very supportive and motivating... My goal for August is to get under 160...
I've also quit smoking again. I quit last September but recently restarted again... so today is day 2... its going just fine so far...
Also, @Micki48 I would like to do the step team this month...5 -

@micki48 I did Sun and Mondays steps earlier in the week, right? I want to continue the step challenge. I want my goal to be 10,000 I don't think I ever lowered it when we went to working from home.
@KellyBgetsfit I am missing Sunday 7/26 from you.0 -

@conleywoods I could not agree with this statement more. Real loss is exactly that. We all have a failures, but it's getting back up to try again that keeps us on this journey. Having the Waistaways to encourage and motivate us makes it that much better!!
I met my step goal today. Woke up to no water at our house (water main break nearby). We're all good now. Haven't finished logging but will go do that as soon as this post is done. This month my goals are...
*Exercise at least 15 minutes a day
*Log all my food and stay under my calories
*Meet my daily step goal every day
Steppers...I'm missing steps.
@jugar all week
@KellyBgetsfit 7/26 (I know I already told you this.)
@ells_runs all week
Once I get these and the exercise conversions, I will post the Week 5 results and the July Final Results.
Here's what our step team for August looks like so far.
1. Micki48 8.5k daily
2. @evangsimmons170 15k
3. @theweeonemfp 10k
4. @eggfreak
5. @tobeme3 10k (also you don't have to do your own converting. We'll take care of that.)
6. @KellyBgetsfit 10k
7. @YinxFed 6k
8. @jguldi11 5k
9. @jugar ?

I managed to get XBX in early and had a short walk before the storm hit. Also was good for food but had missed my morning mini habit before I established the month's goals so that was a strike for the day.

Steps for 8/2 = 8520
I think I am going to make my daily goal 8,000
Yesterday was good, my son made brownies, he made them super thick and super fudgy.. and I didn't eat any.. I went into the den and watched shark week till they were done, eaten and put away...
I switched my alarm, so now I get up 15 minutes earlier which means I am doing 40-45 minutes of exercise in the morning instead of 30 - it went well this morning...
Tonight is Yoga and my lose belly fat workout (it's an app)
The not smoking is going well, I guess because it was only a short while since I started smoking full time again.. Either way, I am prepared.. It really helps that I have a new car and refuse to smoke in it... lol
Dinner tonight is spicy apricot pork chops, with limey rice and roasted carrots.. We stopped the one dinner box, so we have 2 meals left, then I start with Hello Fresh... I wish I could find one that is more diet friendly that isn't ridiculously expensive...
Have a great day everyone !

@micki48 Hi Michelle! May I join the Fitbit steppers group, please? My goal for August is to get to at least 8,500 steps a day. Do you need my Fitbit name?
Have a great day!
Thank you3 -

Absolutely! Glad to have you join us. We’d love to have your Fitbit user name so you can join our challenges there, but a note to everyone else, you do not have to have Fitbit to join the team step challenge. You still need to report your steps here either daily or at the end of the week. (By Sunday)
When I’ve recorded or steps on the spreadsheet, I mark your post “insightful”0 -

Hi everyone,
Happy August! I've been a part of the team since the end of November 2019. In that time, I've lost a tad over 10 pounds and regained a bit, but am still plodding along. I live in Vermont with my transgender spouse (Sarah James) and am going to school for an Associates degree for Physical Therapy Assistant. I've practiced massage therapy since 2001 and am furloughed from work at this time, although don't mind too much what with all of the COVID-19 fears and realities.
My 2 grown daughters are in northern VT at the moment - Emily, the older, is married and lives Nov-May in Florida and VT in the summer where she professionally photographs weddings. Monica, the younger is currently working with a woman incapacitated by a form of Muscular Distrophy - she does a variety of Physio related exercises with the person and is getting very strong in the meantime.
My history (or "herstory") with weight loss is similar to many others. A negative self-image plus self-comforting habits which include a surplus of calories and not nearly enough exercise to accomodate them!
The team helps keep me on track, since doing this alone doesn't work well at all. My goal for August is to eat good food in much smaller quantities than my foot-taller-spouse can (no fewer than 1200/day, though) and get into an exercise routine combining outside walking with inside workouts (which I've eshewed for too long!). I aim to finally get into the next "decade" lower than where I am now (183.6 lbs) by the end of the month (if not sooner).
@micki48 I'm back for stepping with Sunday 8/2 at: 5,072
my goal is for minimum 6,500. Time for a walk!
@YinxFed what is the chart I saw referenced? I missed it first go 'round, apparently!
Have a great week, y'all.

Wow, did I speak too soon! We got slammed by rain and hail last night from midnight to 1 am along with very intense lightning and thunder. All very interesting from inside a camping trailer! But at least it doesn't look like any real damage to speak of in the morning light.
To all my fellow Canadians that get to celebrate a long weekend today, have fun and stay safe!3 -
Because I am determined to have a net loss for August, I am trying some new—old things to spark my interest. (I think I’m bored.) We did this long ago and I invite any of you to join me. I’m going to try and eat as much of a rainbow 🌈 as I can every day. Here is a chart to give you some ideas. Then I plan to post at the end of my eating day to see how I’ve done. Anyone else want to play?
My post will look like this. You may borrow it or do it your own way.
R raspberries, tomatoes
O carrots
Y
G lettuce, cucumbers
B blueberries
I
V purple onion

So many hugs coming your way @ells_runs . Boys are often extremely good at hiding problems - it is so hard to find out if something is happening, let alone when what how or why. You have every reason to be feeling rubbish right now, but you are here. I am blown away by that, and it shows how strong you are. I hope you take those few minutes to come and check in whenever you can - and I hope it helps you recharge those very stressed batteries of yours. I am so glad you got this off your chest, and I agree that turning to alcohol is certainly something to turn away from. It is such an easy habit to get into.
This message comes at a good time for me, as well. I have been hitting a feeling of uselessness and depression lately, but you have just put that into perspective. I'll join you in staying away from the easy solutions, and let's do this dry August. Thanks! I am so glad you are with us. Keep running, keep taking care of yourself, and know we will do whatever we can to have your back.6 -
@jugar I'm sorry, but after I wrote my long message and before you replied I hit the report button. I just realised that it maybe I'll upset someone. They've removed it now so sorry if your reply to me looks odd lol and thank you for your lovely reply. I will definitely come more often and express my feelings. It definitely helps 😊
Also I forgot to post my weigh in 🙄
August Week 1
PW 213.6 lbs (I think??🤔)
CW 213.0 lbs
LTD 12lbs
Also @micki48 can I rejoin step challenge, please? My goal will be 10,000 per day.
1st August Saturday 0 steps
2nd August Sunday 20,274 steps
3rd August Monday 8,665 steps
Thank you all ♥️
