HOW IT ALL WORKS: The January challenge runs from January 1 - 28. F2F months always start on a Sunday and end on a Saturday, so adjust your calendars!
Everyone weighs in weekly on their chosen day right here in the team chat thread. At the end of each week, the tallies are done to determine the team and individuals with the most weight lost. The best losers are announced with full fanfare every Sunday. The team competition is all in good spirits - may the most losing win!
We also celebrate those small, steady losses. If you lose, however small an amount, you are in the green! At the end of the month, we celebrate everyone who lost at least a bit every week. You are heading steadily towards your goal even if you aren't at the top of the weight loss leaderboard.
To make your weigh-in easy to find for your team Captains, please put it right at the top of a message, and use this format:
Weigh In Day:
PW (Previous Weight):
CW (Current Weight):
If you miss two weigh-ins in a row without asking for a break, you will be dropped from the team, so be sure to inform your team captain if you are traveling, sick, or just need some time off. If you take a break, you can be excused for a week or two, or are moved to the Support Team for as long as you need to. You still participate in the discussions, you can weigh in if you want to, but it will not count in the weekly tally.
Once you reach your goal weight, you join the Goal Zone! You continue to weigh in every week. If you have 2 weeks above your self-defined goal zone, you go back to the regular team to lose that amount before it builds up. You will have a chance to hone those maintenance skills and stick with your team!
In addition to your own team, there are weekly F2F Full Group CHALLENGES. You can do all or none - it's up to you. Participating adds a lot to your success, so we hope to see you there often! These can involve anything fitness, health, or nutrition - and they’ll get you moving, thinking, and learning about this journey. Check the Announcements section for full group challenges.
Let’s show our fellow challengers some F2F love! Introduce yourselves right away, and let the new month and year begin!!

Welcome to January 2023!
This is our home for the month, where all of our joys and challenges take place. Please (re)introduce yourselves and set some goals and daily actions for the month and the new year. Focus on the small every day choices, and you will get where you want to go!
I am Liselyn, co-captain along with @ashleycarole86 . I live in rural Québec, and I'm a retired university professor of music. My weight loss story? After being somewhat overweight for most of my life, I really packed it on while in an admin job that involved a lot of sitting, meetings, travel, and meals. I tried many times to lose, but it was not until I was 58 that I got really serious with both food and exercise. As of October, I hit 10 years on maintenance, always refining and making sure I don't have to do it all over again. Yes, it is possible to lose weight and get in shape during and after menopause!
I know there are people on this team who have a lot to lose, others who have lost a lot and are closing in on their goals, and some who might be working on losses that are stubbornly resisting. There is much wisdom here, and the most important lesson we learn from each other time and time again is that it is not a straight shot, there will be trials and errors, and sticking with it when it feels like you have fallen off yet again is the best thing you can do for yourself. Plateaus can be good, but going back the way you came is not!
Some helpful information/tools:
Posting your daily updates
We know from experience that posting daily (or as often as you can!) makes a huge difference to your success. Use any format you like to let everyone know how you are doing on your daily goals and habits. You can report on food, exercise, water, sleep, or whatever you are tracking and trying to stick with. While you're there, talk about how you are, ask questions, and if you can answer someone else, please do! Congratulate others, commiserate, enjoy someone's rant, or go ahead and rant yourself. It all helps make the kind of community where we are in each others' heads when the hand is reaching for that off-plan snack, or the couch is feeling way too inviting...
Weighing in
Please try to weigh in on time! When you post, put your weigh in at the TOP of a message, so it is clear and easy to find. If you cannot post your weight for whatever reason, please request a week off, or if you need a longer break, you can request to move to the "Support Team" where you can still participate but your weigh-ins will not be part of the weekly tally. This is where members who are ill, on vacation, or just needing a break can hang out for as long as needed.
The F2F Habit Tracker
If you want a simple place to track your most important habits, give this a try. You can see how your teammates are doing too The link and how-to info are under "Announcements" on the main F2F page.
So everyone, tell us a bit about you, your goals, what steps you are going to work on. It's fun to know your name and where you live (if you're willing to share that), what brought you here, how your weight loss journey has been, and where you are headed now. Let the introductions roll!1 -
Hello Waistaways old and new - lovely to have you all here!
My name is Ashley and I'm your co-captain along with the fierce and inspiring @jugar
I am responsible for hosting the step challenge.
New and wanting to join?
Give me your daily pledge you're aiming for, and get to stepping! The week runs Sunday to Saturday, so each Sunday I will be looking for your stats from the week prior.
ALL exercise counts, not just steps. So, you will want to post your daily steps + minutes of intentional exercise. I will then convert those minutes to steps, and post a report each week! So, please ensure your daily pledge takes this into account.
My weight loss journey started in January 2021 at 293 pounds. Not long after I found this group, and successfully got myself to my normal BMI weight of below 168. I hit my maintenance range of 160-165 earlier this year, but after a great vacation in September and then some not so stellar life stress, I have been hovering above that the last few months. I have peaked at low 180's now and I'm ready to get back on track. In less than a month fellow teammate and weigh-loss journey friend and husband @bowens1973 and I go to Costa Rica for three weeks to celebrate his 50th birthday. I'd like to lose some weight before then as I know there will be indulgence on that trip.
Overall my life is so much better now than it was at 293. I am no longer held back by my weight and I can do everything in life that I want at my current size. I feel happy and healthy even at 180 but for me staying in my maintenance range of 160-165 is symbolic of my efforts to set a target and to stick with it. I have proven for myself what I already knew - it's not hard for me to gain and diligence is required at all times to stay on track.
I have been on MFP every day for over 700 days and I can honestly say the accountability and friendship of this space is critical for me!
Looking forward to a very successful 2023 with the team!6 -
Hello Team WaistAways!
My name is Lauren and I am from north carolina in the US. I have been overweight my whole adult life. About 10 years ago, I lost 50 pounds. Over the next few years I gained most of the weight back. Since then I have done the whole yoyo thing.
My goals for January are to track everyday and to reach my step goal at least 5/7 days every week. @ashleycarole86 can I increase my step goal to 6,000 this month?
I look forward to see what 2023 brings us!6 -
Hi,
I'm Kristi and I'm 40, married, mom to 3, live in Spokane, Washington and work part time as a school based occupational therapist. My top weight was 255lbs and I am currently about 234lbs. I have been working with a wellness coach since April. I will probably be done seeing her regularly when my next set of visits are up in mid to late February. Right now she has me trying some new stuff that will improve insulin resistance:
⭐ Eat 3 meals a day
⭐ Zero snacks
⭐ Meet my macros
⭐ Workout 5 or 6 days a week 30 minutes HIIT
⭐ Intermittent fasting a few days a week
⭐ Take apple cider vinegar gummies at meals
The next layer will be to start working on:
⭐ No sugar
⭐ No grains except oats, quinoa, beans & chia
⭐ Intermittent fasting every other day
⭐ Shorten the eating window on fasting days
I really want to get these habits down in my last 6-8 weeks with my coach so we have time to see how it's going and make changes. My husband is really interested in the Intermittent fasting so it helps to have him on board with this change. (He doesn't need to loose weight but love the support).
I really hope this works for me. Sometimes I feel like my results don't match my efforts. I'm excited to try something different.
My husband and I just booked a trip in March to see an NBA basketball game. We are a few rows behind my husband's favorite teams bench. We are super excited. We will be leaving the kids with Grandma and we booked a romantic hotel. Looking forward to this!

Hi Team Waistaways, I am Zan from Stafford, England.
My weight loss journey began after my first child. I gained over 66 lbs but managed to lose some. I have 2 more kids now and I’m hoping to shed some more weight, live a healthy lifestyle, improve my fitness level and mental health.
I haven’t been to the gym in about 3 weeks due to being poorly but I’m looking to go back on Tuesday.
My goals for January are
✅ 5000 steps or more
✅ Log in my meals
✅ Workout 4 - 5 days a week
✅ Reduce sugar
Looking forward to this x5 -
Hello teammates! I'm Adrianne a 45 year old mom to 1 tween in North Carolina. In early 2020 I changed jobs then COVID changed everything. I now work from home and have really struggled to eat well and exercise. I had pretty good habits prior but life is totally different now. My parents have been overweight their whole lives and it has had serious impacts on their quality of life and health. My father died last year and lack of self care was a major factor. I desperately want to avoid following their example. I don't have a lot to lose (15 lbs) but I've never done this before and I simply don't feel like myself. Thanks for reading.
Step goal 5,000 steps4 -

I am so glad you are here! Working on those habits to improve your health works well with a team - our voices will be in your head soon! Come by here often. There are all kinds of people, stories, and ideas in here every day - and another North Carolinian! You and @lauren_989 might not be too far apart. I was just down there for Christmas - my mom lives in Matthews, near Charlotte. I am glad you are taking your parents' experiences into consideration. You can have a big impact on how you age, and starting now is a great idea. You'll go up and down sometimes, but sticking with it no matter what makes a big difference. Good luck!3 -
@adrimango what part of NC are you from? I live in Greensboro (technically Jamestown but right on the border).
So today/tomorrow is what I prepared for the last few weeks with "I am a runner." I was thinking about doing the running of the lights at midnight tonight through a park filled with beautiful Christmas lights. But then I had to be honest with myself, I am usually in bed by 9pm every night 😂 How am I going to jog 3.5 ish miles at midnight.
So I found a resolution 5k that I did this morning instead! It's actually warm-ish and didn't rain on me! I am proud of myself for going out and doing this! What a great way to end 2022 and I look forward to what 2023 has in store! Happy New Year everyone!6 -

Great job @lauren_989 !! A morning run is SO much easier than a late night one4
-
@lauren_989 Got you down for 6K starting tomorrow! Woot woot. Great job on the run today.
My weight is already down considerably from the weigh-in posted on Thursday so things are moving in the right direction. As this year draws to a close I am choosing to reflect on the fact that I am over 10 pounds lighter now than I was to start the year, and that is a great feeling.
Brad and I walked the dog for our activity (and hers!) He is riding the Peloton now so I may not have time. We are going out to dinner with friends tonight to celebrate New Years Eve!
I have set a non-weight related goal for 2023: to read 50 books! This will be a stretch for me but I hope having the goal in place will focus me.6 -

Ready to go? First weigh-ins for 2023 will be due any time on Sunday wherever you are. For new people, Sunday weigh-ins can be a bit challenging because they happen on the first day you are part of the team. Just go ahead and post your weight if you have chosen Sunday and then it will feel normal once you are on the team for a while.
Sunday people - here you go! Show us how it's done:

Happy New Year 🥂🎊
I am in Windygates in Fife and last night all the neighbours of the street had a party. At midnight one of them played Flower of Scotland on the bagpipes, it was beautiful. Today is a family party and I will see cousins that I last saw in August 2019. My mum is in her element, she’s the matriarch of this rabble.

I’m Loraine, I live in Springfield MO. At the end of the month I will have been in MO for a year. It has been a challenge and I gained over 20 lbs in about 7 months.
I have been up and down but had been sitting in the 180’s for the longest time. I’d like to be back there as where I am now is just too heavy, uncomfortable and doesn’t sit well on my 5’5 frame.
This group has really helped. I spent time getting my head in the game but for the last three weigh ins I posted a loss. That’s progress and I’m very happy for myself.5 -
Happy New Year Team Waistaways
Sunday/New Year weigh-in:

Sorry 😞5 -
Hi all!
My name is Ellie, I am mum to three teenagers and married to my husband for 19 years.
We live in UK.
I work in school 9 - 5 and some evenings and most weekends I am a part of chefs team in the hotel.
I have put the weight on when my 1 year old son started having seizures 14 years ago. He was very poorly with epilepsy, we spend time in hospitals a lot and vending machine was my friend! That continued for 3.5 years He is seizure free for 10 years now and happy and healthy.
Few years ago I lost 40 lbs but life got in a way and I put it all + more back on and just cannot shift it
Here's hoping I'll fight my demons this year and I'll be healthy this time next year
Later on I am going to take a photo of myself, post it here and see if there's a difference next yer
On the note of putting weight on .... I have put on 10lbs in 10 days
I am so cross and disapointed with myself!
So sorry team to let you down :-(
But on the positive note I am still here I didn't run away like I did in the past.
With huge gain I would normally disapear from Waistaways for couple of weeks and then ask Liselyn to take me back
This time I am admiting my failure, owning up and sticking with it
That's being said
@jugar
Current Weight 230lbs *sigh*
HAPPY NEW YEAR WAISTAWAYS!!!8 -
Sunday, January 1, 2023:
Hello fellow WaistAways!
I’m Chelsey, and I am saying goodbye to thinking about the past, and hello to thinking only about the future!
I live in New England with my husband and our dog, a beagle-mix. We enjoy Sydney Cummings Houdyshell’s workouts on YouTube, going to group fitness and spin classes, long walks with our pup, and I have found an appreciation for yoga.
The habits I want to form in January 2023 are:
1️⃣ Prioritize my exercise time and workout intentionally 5 days a week.
➡️ If it’s 10 minutes of burpees because that’s all my schedule will allow that day, or a 60 minute spin class because it’s a light day, any intentional movement counts and I will no longer punish myself by creating a sense of failure by not “going hard” for 45 minutes or more a day.
2️⃣ Eat and enjoy nutritious food 6 days a week.
➡️ I am changing how I think about “dieting” by focusing on foods that make me feel and taste great, and allowing room (~1 day a week) to enjoy the less nutritious foods. I will listen to my body; how hungry is it and what does it need, not “I should eat now because I’ve been taught that 12pm is lunchtime, even if I’m not hungry”
And finally, I thought it would be fun to create a little challenge for myself this January, so:
🌟 Separate from my walks with my dog, I am going to walk/run/jog/skip at least a mile a day, to effectively hit 31 miles at the end of the month, weather permitting.
@ashleycarole86 - I’d like to join the step challenge this month, and set my goal for 5,000 steps. Thanks!7 -

Ready to drop some pounds and get back to feeling like myself!4 -
All right! We had some really strong people on our team in the last bit of 2022. There will be party hats for our top losers! Announcements will be along soon.
NOW. This week's weigh-in is what we are all working on as of today, right? We've got this! No wild extremes, just a few good habits to keep us going. Hugs to you all!5 -

I also like the idea of the "little challenge" for the month. 31 miles this month sounds great. Other people? What's your January little extra?

Happy New Year team! I have a MFP question: Because I have MFP connected to my FitBit, MFP adds exercise calories throughout the day as I move. Do you stick to your original calorie budget or do you use the updated amount MFP gives you? I guess the proof will be in the pudding if I log consistently and use the updated higher budget and still lose, but I'm curious what others do. Thanks!2

Hi all,
I am Amelia from New Zealand. I have 2 children and been married to my husband for 7 years. I have always been quite fit, playing soccer since I was 9, I started piling on all my current weight almost immediately after I got married, I had not played soccer for a couple of years and no longer had a gym membership causing me to gain 15kgs in the first year. I was getting on top of this weight gain in 2019 I had joined a local soccer team and had lost 8kgs when I ruptured my acl, and then COVID hit. I regained the 8kgs plus another 10kgs.
My goals for January are:
Track everything
10000 steps daily
2-3 litres of water daily
@ashleycarole86 I would love to join the step challenge please - 10,000

Happy New Year again, Team!
Here's my re-introduction.
My name is Yinka, I am 59 years old - so this will be my 60th year (party alert!) I am from the UK - specifically Bewdley in Worcestershire - and I am an online business trainer and a part-time college lecturer. My husband, Ben, and I have been married for 24 years and we both work from home. We have an adult son who lives in the USA with his wife and we adore them both.
Last year was very good to me but I didn't lose any weight. I have had the same 40lb to lose for about 10 years! I exercise regularly and my diet isn't too awful (honestly!)
But I have had a word with myself and I know what has to be done:
- Drink more water regularly
- Walk more (and up my steps)
- Eat well
- Log all of my food and drink
Still 7000 steps target, Ashley @ashleycarole86
(Seems so easy when you write it out, doesn't it?)
So this January - taking my new rule of attempting small goals for short time periods - I will:
- Complete Caroline Girvan's Epic Heat program
- Start Yoga With Adriene's new 30-day Center program
- Eat breakfast 5 days out of 7 each week
- Practice mindfulness/meditation 5 days out of 7 each week
- Drink 1.5 litres of water
- Walk 3 days out of 7 each week
- Ride my stationery exercise bike 3 days out of 7 each week
And with that, I have the contents for this month's habit tracker! I've never been so ambitious, but I would also really love it if I lost 2lb this month.
I read somewhere recently that we should all have a word that we can use for the year. Mine is "stop", as in "stop saying that, Yinka!" whenever I catch myself using unhelpful self-talk. Helpfully shortened to "stop it!" Of course, I don't remember to use it all the time, but when I do, I find it really useful. And helpful.
Signing off, but remember - look forward, not backwards!
TTFN7 -
@YinxFed your "stop" reminds me of this video we were shown in one of my classes. It makes me laugh 😂

I went for a walk outside with my hubby this morning. Enjoying the semi warm weather while it lasts. And then will take down Christmas decorations today as well. I started already, but have a little left to go. I read the first day of my 365 days of positive self talk for weight loss. I slept in this morning so I ate a late breakfast, not sure if I will eat lunch later or just a snack. Going to listen to what my body wants.
@adrimango I typically don't eat my exercise calories. However, my daily calories are more of a range, so if I am hungrier from working out, I may eat closer to the top end of the range if that makes any sense. I think it also depends on the exercise, if you go for a 10 mile run, you may need to eat more vs a 3 mile run.
