Final call for any step challenge members that still need to post for their week 1 (Jan 1-7). Loving all the numbers so far!4 -
Hi,
Today I was a long day! Didn't sleep great last night. Work was fine, I was just dragging by the end. Last minute I found out my daughter had an after-school thing so I picked her up and we got home late. My mother in law comes over during the day to see our dogs while we're at school. One of our dogs is pretty good at escaping his crate if it's not locked just so. Today was one of those days. Luckily he wasn't too naughty but he did get a hold of my bathrobe. Hopefully I will sleep better tonight.
I'm getting the hang of my lumen and the food portion of the plan is easy. I had a few questions today and it was easy to get them answered. Hopefully I will have a good weigh in this Thursday. TOM is a few days away so things won't line up great for weigh in day. I'm taking it easy on workouts this week.5 -
Thank you @ashleycarole861

Happy Tuesday! I can't believe it's only Tuesday - feels like a Wednesday for sure.
I have been training with the personal trainer this morning, followed by breakfast, shower, a cervical screening, and then I've already had a snack (snack 2 technically - I had a banana at 5.45am) all before 10am. I'm working until 5pm, with my dietician appointment mid afternoon, then I want to get the treadmill put together.
Otherwise I think I'd best try and rest up this evening; my body said 'no' to a movement in the training session (thoracic mobility needs work) and I don't think it'll thank me if I keep pushing today.
Lunch is a spicy Moroccan lamb soup - not had this in a while as lamb is quite expensive and the preparation takes ages because you have to dice everything so small. Recipe below.
Spicy Moroccan Lamb Soup
Prep time: 1:00
Cook time: 1:15
Serves: 4-6
1 tbsp olive oil
2 onions, sliced
2 peppers (1 red, 1 green), deseeded and cut into strips
250g lamb, preferably leg meat, finely diced into 1/2-1cm cubes
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground coriander
2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp hot chilli powder
1 pinch of saffron strands
1 garlic clove
1 litre chicken stock or water
400g can of tomatoes
2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander, plus extra for serving
2 tbsp chopped flatleaf parsley, plus extra for serving
400g can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
50g long-grain rice
freshly squeezed juice of 1/2 lemon
flaked sea salt
freshly ground black pepper
Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan. Add the onions and peppers and cook for a few minutes over a low to medium heat until they start to soften. Turn up the heat, add the lamb, and brown it quickly on all sides.
Turn the heat down again and add all the spices and the garlic. Saute for a couple more minutes until everything is well combined, then pour in the stock. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bring to the boil, then turn the heat down and leave the soup to simmer for 30 minutes.
Put the tomatoes in a blender with 2 tablespoons each of coriander and parsley, and blitz until the herbs are very finely chopped. Pour this mixture into the saucepan, then add the chickpeas and rice. Simmer for another 30 minutes, by which time the meat should be beautifully tender.
Just before serving, stir in the lemon juice and taste for seasoning, then adjust if necessary. Sprinkle with extra chopped coriander and parsley and serve.6 -
I just want to say you all are doing great Waistaways! I have been quiet this month due to work stress which is typical in January. I’m just too tired to think when I get home each day. But, it is temporary and will get easier next month. I do come here and read all your posts every day and I’m loving everyone’s progress. 😃7

@DD265 I could crawl inside that soup it looks so inviting!
@CarolAnnM2 You made great progress this week despite your work stress. Bravo!
1/9 exercise:
10 minutes strength + 10809 steps
I am flying to Lloydminster around lunch time today for a two night business trip, so I won't have a scale until Friday morning. @jugar I will have to weigh in one day late this week!
I should have time to hop on the Peloton before I start my work from home this morning - don't have to go into the office since I live close to the airport.
If I can squeeze in a workout at the hotel tomorrow I'll be feeling really good!8 -
Happy Tuesday!
Have a great trip to Lloyd @ashleycarole86 - watch out for that Indian restaurant! I always get trapped eating too much whenever I'm there with my daughter. She is one of these taller willowy types who can eat all the things...
I tested negative this morning! Our crazy household separate nations can now rejoin! I will do all the laundry, and enjoy hanging about it other rooms than the 2 I have been using since getting home on December 28th
The days are getting longer. Just remember that - but the workday, hopefully it isn't! Hang in there, you hard working people.
And not to bring you down, but all of you who just posted fabulous losses? Remember that you are now in the process of building next week's weigh-in! Don't let go of your plan! You've got this!9 -
Okie dokie....so I'm trending in the wrong direction, but I'm honestly not too concerned. My lifts have gradually been getting heavier and I started a new lifting routine and let me tell you...incline & decline bench presses will have you feeling all sorts of things if you're used to doing regular flat ones. I'm glad I decreased my weight since I'm working smaller muscles that haven't really been touched before.
I plan on getting on the fancy bia scale again soon, so hopefully even though my overall weight is going up, it's from muscle (fingers crossed). If not, I'm going to have to tweak my kcal goals.

Also - I just bought ESHA for my job, which is the gold standard RDs use for diet analysis, so if anyone would like to compare their MFP logs to that, we can conduct an experiment4 -
I didn’t stick to my plan of doing a strength workout this morning. I had to get into the office earlier than normal today so that commute time and walking the pup time ate into my workout time. It was actually a nice reminder of why I do enjoy working from home; I can get my workout in and not mind sitting in my workout clothes in meetings if I’m running a little behind schedule; can’t do that going into the office!
I did do a nice long yoga routine after work I kind of made up on the spot using some sequences I remember from classes and a few Pinterest pins. Now I’m going to read for a bit before we do our friends’ virtual Secret Santa. We’ve had a couple of unopened gifts hanging around so I’m looking forward to opening them and catching up with some friends before bed.5 -

Ahhh - Barcelona to Madrid. A beautiful 125 hours for sure!
I hope everyone is doing great. I'm just about to fall into bed, but first -- the Wednesday line-up!

It was lower yesterday, but I was starving last night and ate a lot. 🤷♀️ And, I was still hungry when I layer in bed. After 10 minutes, I got up and made tea. Tomorrow, I am going to Denver. I will be staying at hotel for 3 nights. I hope I can find healthy choices. I have a lot to do to get ready still. Today, I am going to loft. I was considering toong just Barre and pilates this month, but I want to mix it up.3 -

While still not doing great at it, I did do BETTER at trying to drink more water than I usually do, so that's a win and I will continue to work at it. I also managed to walk at least 30 minutes 5 days this past week so I was pretty happy with that.
I have to get blood work done tomorrow morning for my life insurance and I'm really nervous/anxious about it. I've been doing my best for the last 3.5 months to try to get my cholesterol lowered without medication. Supplements, cholesterol lowering diet, losing weight (I'm down 16 lbs so far), and exercise. I'm really hoping to see my cholesterol improve, but worried that it hasn't. I guess we'll see!8 -

Wohoo! Another great week! I am honestly surprised I am down this much because usually if I lose a good number the week before, the next week is very little. Now to keep these daily habits going for a 3rd week!8 -
Cw is 224.9 @jugar , still wrangling in some bad habits and cravings but I'm getting there ❤️ I figured I'd update everyone on my progress in jewelry making, I just made this pendant on Monday and I think it's a good representation of my progress. I've been calling it "A Window to the Tree of Life" it's wrapped in Brass and Copper on a Rose Quartz stone
I also modeled it for a friend 😁
For anyone who never saw my shop, it's GorgesWireDesign.etsy.com ❤️

Morning and greetings from Lloyd. No Indian temptations here @jugar as all my meals are business meals and that's not what they chose. Darn - next time
I got up and used the hotel elliptical this morning. I also avoided alcohol at our dinner out last night. Happy with my choices.
Had a good filling hotel breakfast this morning that's all tracked so now I just need to stay focused and today can be another good day!6 -
@AshenMoon That is a fabulous pendant! I will definitely go check out your latest creations
Raucous cheering to all you wonderful losers! This week is SO green. We must be channeling @Meals12 Amelia's summer! I knew it would be great having another member from the Southern Hemisphere.
I'm starting to feel like it is finally winter here - it is really cold this morning, and a good snow storm is on its way starting tomorrow. At last!3 -
@jugar I'm glad you're finally getting your snow! I'm not looking forward to the shovelling, but I will enjoy the calorie burn.
I just hope hockey doesn't get cancelled like the last storm.
My weight this morning was right at the upper limit of my maintenance range and I've noticed thoughts when plating my meals that involve 'I can eat this extra portion, I'll burn it off later' or 'I'll get back on track in February'... So that's the beginning of the slippery uphill climb for me. I've tried to start tracking again and haven't won that battle... I'm going to be conscious of my thoughts and up my water consumption.
We fixed the ice maker! No more excuses.
I've also noticed lower back pain from our new, softer bed. I guess my spinal injury wasn't as healed as I thought and I will have to commit to more planks or pilates to strengthen my core and fix this.4 -
We finally had our late gift exchange with our son tonight - including gifts from our daughter which had been waiting for several weeks! I was away over the holidays, then had covid - so this was the first time we could sit together and enjoy a meal and the gifts. We are all concerned about keeping each other warm! There were gorgeous woolly socks, warm mittens, even a pair of heated gloves - there will be no cold people in this family any time soon As is his evil way, my son brought lots of fancy ice cream. Of course, I did not resist...
SO! Energy is coming back, so I have to get moving more. I'm about to hop on the exercise bike to use up some of that ice cream. Tomorrow will hopefully bring enough snow to get out the snowshoes. Can't wait!
Thursday line-up in the wings - ready to go, right?
@bowens1973
@eggfreak
@conleywoods
@PlaneMonkey I'll join you on those planks and core work - it helps everything.2 -
@jugar I will be going on the support team this month. Things quickly got a little stressful and I just need to reduce stress where I can, so no weigh ins. My dad had a positive test for colon cancer. Lots of unknowns at this point and it was a big surprise. He was having post covid heart symptoms. In the process of checking his heart out, his heart was cleared but the cancer popped up. He needs more tests to confirm. We're just stuck waiting. Work got really busy. A large agency that serves students with autism abruptly closed with little notice. Were definitely feeling the impact of that! I'm tired lately and I am trying to be kind to myself.9

@conleywoods
So sorry to hear about your dad's diagnosis and the worry this puts on your family
Thinking of you all right now as he waits on additional testing2 -

I'm very sorry to hear of your father's diagnosis @conleywoods. I will keep my fingers crossed for you all.
@AshenMoon that's lovely!
I've had a busy week - too busy, I think, as I am exhausted this morning. Monday night was lady physio, Tuesday I had PT, smear, worked late, yesterday I started work at 7.30, and had the car in the garage (finally sorted), plus I did 30 mins walking on the treadmill listening to a podcast. The podcast was a Tim Ferris one, but with James Clear who wrote Atomic Habits - felt timely as he'd been discussed in here recently! I've had a decent weight loss too. I have to remind myself it's not the focus right now, but very pleased all the same. I only weigh once a week now (used to do daily) so I'm less aware of the fluctuations.
My session with the dietician was interesting. I'm now tracking my food intake using the Practice Better app, which is her tool (or one of) as a professional. I am taking photos of my food - so obviously I have to do that before I eat it! - no need to weigh or record portion sizes then. We talked about protein sizes generally being a fist (carbs, fruit and veg), palm (protein) and index finger tip (fats and oils), so that's the basis I'm trying to work on for now.4 -

Man, it's nice to be coming down again. I had hit a point of apathy, but I'm re-energized. Thanks for all the encouragement and confidence during the last several weeks - exactly what I needed.8 -

Hey! Let me know how you like using that app. I'm always looking for more tools to provide for my patients as well. I have a list of apps I recommend to try to make it easy for people, but we're sort of in the stone age up here and most of those recommendations fall on deaf ears. I'd love if you share anything your RD teaches/recommends so I can think about implementing as well

@conleywoods hang in there That sounds like one big rush of tough stuff. Come by when you can, but definitely keep the pressure off. Try to take care of yourself too, though. We're holding your hands - hope you can feel us there with you!4
